About Me Wendong Xi was born in Wuhan China. He worked and studied in Singapore and San Francisco for the past 8 years. He mainly worked in exhibition/ gallery space design and interior design. He was keen to the research and development of exclusive execution of interior design. His design philosophy is to transform the ice cold cement and steel structure into warm and neatly designed space. During his years of study in Singapore, he experienced many inspiring exhibitions which significantly influenced him. He started to acknowledge that an exceptional design of exhibition/gallery space requires the mastering of graphic design, advertising design and illustration knowledge. He noticed the significance of the coordination of both senses, such as visual sense and auditory sense in designing and applied this theory in his works and study. He appreciated the rigorous attitude and the professionality to the industry which was taught by Interior Architecture &Design School in Academy of Art University, San Francisco. His passion of design and his outstanding works were complimented by his instructors. His achievements were also credited to his mastering of software such as AutoCAD, Revit and 3Ds Max. He enjoyed his traveling to the foreign countries. He believes that each outdoor experience could bring him different perspectives to his lives and works. It refreshes his idea of design and becomes the new inspiration to his works. Playing with his UAV, Go Pro and other cameras, his life is full of challenges and exciting moments. Quoting from his own words: “The success of an interior designer cannot be learnt from school, but it is accomplished by all life experiences one has.

WENDONG XI INTERIOR DESIGNER

My portfolio concept is about the balance. The balance of asymmetrical and symmetrical design. Balance is a way of thinking and temperament. Balance should be introduced to our lifestyle. We are balancing our lives at every moment. Therefore, balance could present better solution to our living situation. We seek balance from struggling with our issues. Balance could also be applied on art creatives. There were three interesting projects to be included in my portfolio. Three different balances had been established and they support me in my final presentation. Here, I present the processes of me balancing elements from my projects.

RESTAURANT DEVELOPMENT

Commerce Design / I Urban Food

Enlarged Fumiture Plan

This restaurant contains two parts, the main dining area and the open kitchen. The open kitchen mainly includes oyster and wine bars. Both of the main dining area and open kitchen were structured by different parts. For this concept, it applies different ceilings to divide and show different regions and areas. Separation is the main purpose. Another purpose is to present the major display and dining area. Those columns and main walls are exception to the open space in the restaurant.

RESTAURANT CONCEPT DELELOPMENT I was hoping that different ceilings help people to understand the area better. For the floor covering, the material that I used is cwalled Canary wood. What’s different is this material will help people to feel better and refreshing. On the other side in the main dining area I applied canary wood as the main material. The idea is, customers could enjoy their meals from choosing settlements in areas with different application of canary woods. For instance, in the main dining area I will build totem. I will use totem elements to bring in specific cultural context to specific dining areas. I wish this design concept could get the best effect.

COFFEE WINE/LOUNGE SPACE

Commerce Design / I Urban Food

Enlarged Fumiture Plan

The basic concept of wine and coffee lounge is for customer to rest. This lounge is also a place for displayed products. They are mainly high quality products. The design concept has transformation from the tradition wine and coffee bars. The lounge is set up in the upper center which is close to pizza bar and restaurant.

28

Wendong Xi // porfolio

COFFEE WINE/ LOUNGE SPACE CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT The reason that I setup the lounge in the upper center is to provoke the consuming of displayed products for waiting customers. Those displayed high quality products will be the attractive point. The function of the lounge is different than market space because the market space is a place to do free shopping. The lounge is a place for tasting and benefits products that are displayed. The coffee and wine lounge is leveled to a higher scale. Customers can browse around in a circulation pattern. If one wants to go to the food preparing area one only needs to pass the passage way. If one wants to leave, they can go through doors.

PREPARED FOOD MARKET

Commerce Design / I Urban Food

Enlarged Fumiture Plan

This major space includes market and prepared food area. They are separated by their functions. The prepared food area is favorited by modern “to go customers and young customers. It is the presentation of all Delis and foods. A better route is required by ensuring a better shopping experience. It also needs to be tidy and clean. I applied a younger theme in this area. The design of main market is focused on its shopping experiences. My goal is to efficiently design the space and to allow more products be contained and presented in this market place.

40

Wendong Xi // porfolio

PREPARED FOODMARKET CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT This area is mainly for presenting deli preservations which include salad bar, selfbar and so on. Closing to the kitchen is the frozen food gallery place. It is designed to close to the refrigerator. All of those places and food galleries are designed for the convenience of customers. In each presentation place, there is a glass structured/ decorated closet hanging above the celling. It is for storage and decoration, it is also fulfilling the extended heights space.

CLIENT “17 mile” living center is for elderly. This place is a two stories high building with additional roof spaces. There are eight apartments for the elderly to live. The nurse’s office offers 24-hour services. The building itself has double height ceiling. It brings a lot of sunlight. The entire building has overflow windows. It has direct sunlight that provide elderly a warm place to rest in. To each apartment, the concept of it is called “recall”. The design of recall establishes a feeling of “Home”. The design of the roof has a free style. The roof produces elderly a place for them to relax. It has turf and gardens for elderly to rest and walk around.

CONCEPT STATENMENT My concept is a living center for elderly. The conceptual season is summer. The location for the living center is 17 miles from Carmel. The environment aspect is spring and summer feeling all year long. There are full of evergreen plants and every neighbor has green lawn and back yard with the turf. They also have colorful plants in their gardens as well. I chose the summer element because summer is a time of rebirth and freshness. The bright color decorations will give elderly a sense of hope and a place with joyfulness.

LOBBY RECEPTION

Social Design / Senior Living Center

Enlarged Fumiture Plan

In first floor, the focuses were on lobby, reception and café. There are also four studio rooms in this floor. Guests who live in these rooms will be more convenience to everything. To put those elements together, guests’ interests, designer’s thoughts and basic functions. It is going to make a better circulation in this area. The community room is in first floor as well. The main idea of first floor’s design was to create a pleasing environment to elders/guests to have community activities. It is different from the second floor, it significantly emphasizes its different functions.

The second floor has an interesting curved celling design. It was a solution to welly extend the spaces of first and second floor. These spacious spaces will please our clients by their increased comfortable living experiences. The independence of each section of second floor is emphasized. For instance, the library and the gym they were designed without distributing each other. The nurses station was set in the center of the floor, it will ensure the best execution to clients and their emergencies. There are four more studio rooms in second floor. Compare to the first floor’s studios, they are all facing one direction and have more sun lights through it.

CONCEPT STATENMENT

HELLO GEOMETRY For this project my topic is on National Geographic office. I will need to discuss about the characteristics of National Geographic specs. As we know National Geographic is about Geographic, Society, culture, and professional Photography. From the logo is a simplified logo that can let people know is simplicated. The color of the logo stands out to attract people to have eye-catching. My concept is combining the characteristics and specs of the National geographic logo. The logo has a rectangular shape. The theme for my concept is geometric. The specs of geometric are from angle to angle. The geometric shapes and types also include lines and texture to represent the feeling of geometric themes.

1st Floor What we see here is an open space. It includes an exhibition gallery, store and cafĂŠ. The key is to guide guests to a recommended touring walkway. For this render I have designed the theme of coffee bar. The interesting part is that the lighting ceiling design and passage way let visitor the find the bar easily. We can see that we also have a small arear that is for single person to enjoy their coffee.

This is the office are of National Geographic. The idea is to create a comfortable working space to increase their working efficiency, and to balance the individuality and the public spaces. Our main color theme is close to the identification of NatGeo. The classical yellow and blue which presents a brave and positive quality of the company. The geometric shape was largely applied to increase the active feeling of the company. My idea is to present the philosophy of NatGeo which is; the determination of advancing and exploring the world.
