Two cars crashed at speed on separate occasions into properties at the end of the new short link road from the Wendover Bypass to Nash Lee Lane, within days of its opening in early June .

The road is a temporary diversion, built to allow HS2 works alongside the original Nash Lee Road (see map on page 5). Local residents blamed a lack of adequate signage for what should be a 30mph section leading off the roundabout at the end of the main A413 Wendover bypass, along which vehicles are often driven very fast.

Mike Comlay, who lives in one of the two houses affected by the crashes, says that residents warned HS2 and Buckinghamshire Council that the unlit road would be unsafe during the planning stage last year. However,

when it opened in early June there was little to indicate that it was not a straight-on continuation of the 60mph Wendover Bypass after the roundabout.

Following the crashes, the house owners affected felt obliged to install protective temporary high visibility water-filled barriers at their own expense. In July HS2 and Buckinghamshire Council started to install clearer 30mph signage, reflective red and white 30mph road markings with rumble strips, 'No Through Road' notices at the roundabout, with plans for signage at the T-junction end. However, the work is not due to finish until August and in the meantime cones with flashing beacons have been installed to clarify the road shape

and hopefully calm speeding traffic. The resident's own barriers were still there as Wendover News went to press.

The new unnamed link road runs from a new junction off the Wendover Bypass roundabout to Nash Lee Lane. This is necessary because the stretch of Nash Lee Road that it used to join is now blocked off while the HS2 cutting is constructed. A section of Nash Lee Road itself has been temporarily replaced by a new road section that curves to the south for a few hundred yards from the same roundabout before re-joining the original road close to the former Nash Lee Lane junction.

The new link road narrows and bends before it ends abruptly at a new T-junction onto the original Nash Lee Lane (Google Maps: https://bit.ly/3q0bedP). Originally there was no Stop or Give Way signage or reflective strips to warn of the junction at this point and the vehicles ran straight on and into the gardens opposite.

Both crashes were captured on a CCTV security camera. Mike Comlay says they occurred at about 03:45 on 8 June and 03:35 on 24 June.

Fortunately nobody was hurt, but according to Bucks Free Press (https://bit.ly/3XXJq6p) the driver of the first car was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, driving without insurance, and taking a vehicle without consent, before being bailed.

As we reported in the July edition of Wendover News, the title will soon be handed over to a new company, called Wendover Community News CIC. The company, (CIC is short for 'Community Interest Company'), has been incorporated and is now working towards its accreditation by IMPRESS - the regulator for small publishers like us.

Since then we have been making plans for involving our owners – the community. We have plenty of vacancies for new vounteers, but the people we are looking for may be slightly different to who you expect. In fact, you might be one of the people who would fit in very well.

We have a very small group of people who do a lot of the work. They are forming the business plan and getting all the admin organised to ensure that it will run like clockwork. We could do with a couple more people like that – particularly with publishing and editorial experience. We want to ensure

that it all works properly once we take over. We also need innovators and techies for our proposed online project.

We need people who are just interested in what we do, and can occasionally do some research, take some photos, write an article or just call in with some important news that will be interesting for our readers. This is not something you have to commit to, you don't have to show up every week and you certainly don't even have to think of yourself as a volunteer. That doesn't mean that we won't look after you as if you were!

Some of Wendover News' best volunteers in the past probably didn't think of themselves as badge-carrying Wendover News people: Over 100 people in the last decade have helped out delivering the edition through over 3,000 letterboxes. Others have just chatted to Jane or one of the team and allowed us to turn their knowledge into a news article. You could be one of those.

Tell us what you think!

Wendover News believes community support is key to creating a thriving area. We would like to hear from a range of people about how to improve the Wendover news website for you and for our community. You can join in the research by clicking the link below or scanning the QR code which will lead you to a form to fill out. Please complete this form and we will be in touch if you are selected to take part.

Elsewhere, we welcomed pupils of John Colet School to our Bowood Lane site on the 6 June to see the tunnel boring machine they named as part of a competition EKFB ran with the school. The TBM was named Patricia after Patricia Gower, long serving Landlady of The Packhorse pub, Patricia’s family also attended the site visit.

We would also like to thank our charity of the year, Lindengate, for hosting our team volunteering day. On 1 June a group of 15 volunteers helped with maintenance for the site through activities like de-weeding, compost turnover, laying of bark on footpaths, planting and adding a stone layer to one of their many ponds. Our team thoroughly enjoyed the day and we look forward to working with them further in the future!

Music is one of the richest and most versatile resources to enhance general well-being. Few people fail to be moved by the dulcet tones of a soulful ballad, the powerful sound of an orchestra, a happy tune played on a piano, guitar, 'cello, trumpet, saxophone and many other instruments. Access to music is easier than ever, and the choice is endless. We are amazed and delighted to witness the joy in our visitors’ faces when they join in with singing and even dancing at the end of our Monday morning sessions.

Music can evoke both happy and sad memories, but even a tearful moment can be of great therapeutic value. Gentle music can have a calming effect, a faster, more up-beat and cheery tune can encourage movement and exercise. It is an easy and enjoyable

task to choose music that is meaningful to a person with dementia, in order to distract them from a tricky subject, to lift their mood or to reduce anxiety. People who struggle with communication often remember words to old familiar songs or hymns and so manage to engage in an unexpected way.

In order to get the most therapeutic help from music, family carers will need to put some effort into encouraging regular music so that it is automatically looked for in any stressful situation. At the Monday Club Café, we help families by lending them a music box downloaded with their personal playlist and by teaching people how to get the best value from them. Help improve our area's biodiversity...

Although it seems like a while ago, it appears that ‘No Mow May’ was a success with more people allowing their lawns to flourish for the benefit of wildlife.

Strategies to improve wildlife numbers and species by encouraging biodiversity doesn’t need to stop there. Research has shown that one of the best times to sow wildflower seed is in early autumn; that not cutting back garden plants can provide refuges for overwintering insects, and that providing log piles and undisturbed areas can help animals of all kinds to survive through the winter.

Biodiversity – the range of different plant and animal species – has taken something of a hammering locally, nationally and

globally over recent years. There is now an opportunity to do what we can in our own gardens, verges and collective woodland and open spaces to encourage greater diversity and numbers of wildlife – rather than hoping that ‘somebody else’ will do it. In fact, any time of year is a good time to start, whether it is planning garden areas or trees for next year, making or buying a ‘bee hotel’, a bird box or even setting-up a remote wildlife camera.

Climate Action Wendover and the Chiltern Society, with the support of Wendover Parish Council, have been instrumental in setting up the Wendover Wildbelt with one of the aims of increasing biodiversity. The area at the old skate park is flourishing with a variety of trees, bushes and herbs that make up the

agroforestry project, trees and shrubs along the boundary and an encouraging display of plants, particularly the spring show of yellow rattle, in the wildflower area. This is a tremendous boost for biodiversity in Wendover.

Meanwhile in your own garden, late summer and early autumn are a great time to plant wildflower seeds for next year – you’ll likely see seedheads forming on existing plants and grasses, so follow nature’s lead. It’s always best to go for a reputable supplier of native species.

See the RHS website for lots of information on seeds and how to develop a wildflower meadow.

An even easier option is to use a seed bomb or bee bomb – a variety of seeds in a small clay ball which you simply scatter and allow to break down in the rain. These are available online, in garden centres and at the Just shop in Wendover High Street.

Changes at Tring Park

Changes at Tring Park School

On 5 July 2023 Tring Park School for the Performing Arts announced the retirement of its long-standing and accomplished Principal, Stefan Anderson. After a rigorous selection process, the school announced the appointment of Simon Larter-Evans, effective from 1 September 2023.

Growing up in Canada, Stefan discovered his passion for music. He moved to the UK to study at both the Royal College of Music and University of Cambridge. He began his teaching career at Wellington College and The King’s School Canterbury, before joining Tring Park School.

Commenting on his retirement

Stefan says, “Tring Park School is unique and will hold a special place in my heart. It has been an honour to work with the most dedicated teaching staff and incredibly talented young people over the past 21 years. The buzz and energy that fills the school is unmatchable and I will continue to follow its progress and watch on with pride during my retirement.”

Simon Larter-Evans (see photo) also comes from an arts background, beginning his career as a dancer following his training at prestigious The Rambert Academy. His

varied career saw him work within both PR and publishing, ultimately re-training as a teacher. Roles in education have seen him working within several world class institutions, including Head of Boarding and English at Yehudi Menuhin School and most recently as Head of St Paul’s Cathedral School.

He says “Tring Park School is a vibrant hub of extraordinary talent. I’ve known of the school for decades and am aware of its reputation of being a real centre of excellence for young performers, with a wonderfully strong sense of community that people carry for life. I wanted to be part of that. My aim is to build on the already fantastic achievements the school has, from performing across all vocational disciplines, to the excellence in academics, together.”

Angela Odell, Chair of Governors at the School says, “After working hard to find the right fit following Stefan’s incredible career with us, we knew we needed an individual with a similar passion for education and the performing arts, who also shares our vision of providing the best combined vocational and academic education. We are thrilled to have Simon on board and thank Stefan for his unwavering dedication, wishing him well on his well-deserved retirement.”

Proposals to close Wendover's railway ticket office

Wendover station’s ticket office is scheduled for closure under plans to save money by selling all tickets online or through machines.

This is part of proposals published by the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), the nationwide body responsible for ticket offices, machines etc. If accepted, the closures will affect most stations nationwide, including all on the Chiltern Lines routes.

Details of the proposed closure are posted at the station: You can also read them here: www.chilternrailways.co.uk/ ticketofficeproposals. RDG puts a positive

gloss on its proposals, claiming that it will see “ticket office staff transitioning to multiskilled ‘customer help’ roles.” It claims that only 10% of tickets are currently bought over the counter, with the rest being bought through ticket machines or online.

The group says that station staff will be available in the same periods as current ticket office opening times and will be able to help people with access problems, or those having problems operating the ticket machines (a familiar issue at Wendover station). At the time of going to press it was understood that there will be a member of staff available at the station.

Can I “provide and protect” in my Will?

Family arrangements are often complicated, such as with children from previous relationships. Many people want to provide for their new partner, but ensure that their children will benefit in due course. Peace of mind and flexibility can be achieved by use of Will trusts.

How?

If you left everything to your partner and then, when they have died, to your children, (or other chosen beneficiaries), there is no guarantee that your children will actually benefit. Your partner could, for example, rewrite their Will if their circumstances changed, or there could be situations beyond their control, meaning your children miss out. With a “life interest trust”, your partner is entitled to receive the interest from the trust, including the right to occupy your share of the property. However, as the trust assets are owned by your appointed trustees (normally your executors), if your partner changed their

Will, for whatever reason, it should not affect the assets in the trust. When your partner dies, the trust comes to an end. The trustees then transfer the trust assets to your named beneficiaries, such as your children.

Reviews

I advise that wills are reviewed regularly, at least every 3 to 5 years, or earlier if there is a change in personal circumstances or legislation. Many people will use this Will trust at the beginning of a relationship and then, when the relationship has settled, prepare a new Will without it.

A Will is one of the most important documents you will ever prepare. I therefore recommend that you take specialist professional advice.

Flypast flurry over Halton

Local plane spotters have been treated to an unusual variety of flypasts over RAF Halton this summer, marking significant events and anniversaries.

Early evening on May 16 saw the UK’s last flying Avro Lancaster bomber touring the UK to mark the 80th anniversary of the famous Dambusters (Operation Chastise) on the Ruhr valley dams in Germany on 16/17 May 1943. It circled Halton’s airfield a few times, treating locals to the evocative sound of its four Rolls Royce Merlin engines, before continuing north.

A Recruit Squadron graduation day on 24 May was marked by a rare flypast by one of the RAF’s big Atlas C.1 (Airbus A400M ) four-engined transports, again with its own very distinctive turboprop sound. The Chief of the Air Staff was attending for one of his last formal events prior to changing office.

RAF Halton’s Families Day on 10 June was

fun filled, with zorb racing, giant football darts, a charity colour run, face painters, children’s entertainer and more. This was treated to a flypast over Wendover and Halton by the ever-popular Red Arrows, with the Hawk jets trailing red, white and blue smoke.

A few days later saw the farewell airborne tour for the RAF’s venerable Hercules transports, which in various forms have served since 1967. They have now been retired and replaced by a smaller number of the larger Atlas type. Three of the unmistakable Hercules C-130J type flew

in close formation over RAF Halton in the early evening of 14 June.

Early July saw a flypast by the RAF’s largest

airlifter, a four-jet Boeing C-17A Globemaster flying from Brize Norton.

Finally, July’s graduation day was marked by an aerial visit by one of the RAF’s latest acquisitions, a twin-jet Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, flying from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.

Chiltern Young Creatives

A new community group based in Wendover is now open to local children aged 11 and under. It started with a one hour session on Saturday, June 10. The aim is to build children’s self-esteem by engaging in the creative arts; provide opportunities to discover and showcase young people’s talents; foster a sense of accomplishment and increased self confidence; and empower children to become well rounded individuals capable of navigating an ever-evolving world with imagination, empathy and creativity.

Parents, grandparents and other family grown-ups are asked to register their under -11s at Wendover Community Library by 10.30am for an 11am start. The plan is for participating children to have written and illustrated their first book which will be published in time for Christmas.

The project is free of charge for the first term and all profits made from book sales will be given to charity. The library, local junior school book shop and other individuals are providing start up support but for more information, please phone 07525 777888.

Wendover's housing market remains resilient

What’s happening to local house prices? Are they going up due to inflation and shortage, or down due to inflation (again) impacting incomes, together with rising mortgage interest rates? What will happen next?

Wendover News talked to Ross Final, who has 24 years’ experience in the local housing market, including owning Christopher Pallet Estate Agents for the past decade.

What, we asked, is the impact of all these trends? Ross thinks that there’s still ample cause for optimism, if you regard prices holding firm as a good thing. “Wendover has unique charm and limited housing supply, so

it has long been a sought-after destination for prospective homeowners. The demand for properties here remains consistently high, ensuring that house prices in our area tend to hold firm even during uncertain times."

“In recent months we have seen a slight adjustment in prices, with a modest decrease of around 5% from the peak of last year. Even so, average selling prices are still higher than they were just a couple of years ago. This demonstrates the inherent strength of our local housing market.”

Recent increases in interest rates, with apparently more to come, may well concern people coming off fixed mortgage rates. “It is essential to understand that these rates are simply returning to a more normal level, akin to what we experienced in 2008 and before,” says Ross. “We have enjoyed historically low rates for an extended period, and a gradual increase was inevitable. While this change might require some adjustment, it is a sign of a healthy and stabilising market.”

In June alone, Christopher Pallet Estate Agents facilitated the sales that represent the diversity of the local market. For example a two-bedroom apartment listed at £290,000, three-bedroom Victorian homes at £699,950, and a luxury five-bedroom build exceeding £1,000,000.

A key factor is the persistent shortage of available homes, he says. “We are still not building enough houses to meet the existing demand, especially in our most desirable areas. This fundamental supply-demand imbalance ensures that, despite temporary fluctuations, the market will rebound swiftly. The allure of Wendover, with its captivating surroundings and vibrant community, continues to attract homebuyers.”

In conclusion, Ross says that the recent adjustments in the housing market are “an opportunity rather than a setback and that Wendover's enduring appeal, combined with a market that is readjusting to a more normalised interest rate environment, sets the stage for a positive future. The local housing market is resilient, and the journey of homeownership in Wendover is one filled

Wendover Singers entertain at St Mary’s for the second year

The Wendover singers held their second pair of concerts at St Mary’s church on Saturday 15 June, attracting audiences of about 200 for the afternoon session and more than 220 for the evening. For a modest fee the audience was treated to about two hours of a diverse repertoire of songs, ranging from classical to rock, pop folk and Broadway hits.

The community choir has only been fully running for two years and already has 73 adult members, and about 13 children aged seven to 11 in their own section.

Carol originally set up the choir together with her friend Sue Thornton in early 2019, originally as a one-off fund-raising event for Wendover & District Rotary Club. The idea was for professional musical director Jill Neenan to help a “scratch choir” to rehearse in an afternoon and perform the same evening. This worked so well that it was decided to form a regular community choir. Initial funding for a keyboard was provided by the Lionel Abel Smith Trust, while Wendover Parish Council helped to

Nash Lee Lane road safety

The diversion of Nash Lee Lane came into use in June, and two serious accidents occurred within a fortnight resulting in damage to residents’ property. We pointed out our concerns about the width of the road and a sharp bend to the Council in April, and were assured that the design met the appropriate Highways standards. HS2 are now implementing a 15 point improvement plan which should be completed by the end of August. Meanwhile a temporary crash barrier has been installed to protect local residents. See also front cover story.

A413 Small Dean closures

There were closures of the A413 in June as part of the complex plan to build the Small Dean Viaduct, and HS2 has published an online animation of what’s planned over the next three years at www.tinyurl.com/sdv2023video

One of the first steps was to divert an underground water main, so that the road can be realigned round the viaduct piers. Piling the foundations for the piers is currently progressing west of the railway line, and in the autumn the road will be closed again to allow the carriageways to be temporarily shifted eastwards to allow works between the A413 and the railway line.

Saving Wendover’s waterways

Along with the Parish Council, we are getting increasingly concerned about the lack of information about how HS2 is going to ensure that the Weston Turville Reservoir SSSI is going to continue be fed with water from the Coombe Hill aquifer. The Green Tunnel cutting intercepts groundwater flows, and the Small Dean Embankment stops surface water getting to Hamden Pond. HS2’s plans to tunnel a 1.6km culvert alongside the bypass seems like an expensive way of increasing the flood risk in Aylesbury by diverting water away from the reservoir. Further details are available on our website at www.whs2.org/water.htm. Meanwhile (at the time of writing)

excavation of the cutting has not started as the Environment Agency have still not approved HS2’s plans, and we’re asking for the details. Meanwhile the Parish Council is working on maintaining Hampden Pond as a local amenity for future generations (see back page).

Ellesborough Road issues

More weeks of closures of Ellesborough Road are expected to create the diversion over the temporary bridge, including rerouting of various underground utility services impacted by the cutting works needed to build the Green Tunnel. HS2 are still hoping that

the new road will open in September, but we are concerned about the safety of the sharp bend immediately after the bridge of over the bypass. HS2 tells us that the design has been approved by Bucks Highways, but we will monitor progress in the light of the Nash Lee experience.

Issues with HS2?

If you’re affected by the construction activity, please contact the HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 (which is available 24 hours a day) or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk to get your issues resolved. It helps if you have photographic evidence and please get a complaint reference number so that we can follow up issues as needed.

Need our help?

If you need further help, want to join us, or have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org.

Chiltern MS Centre's Bigger Mission

The Chilterns MS Centre in Wendover has rebranded as the Chilterns Neuro Centre to reflect the opening up of the charity’s support services to people with neurological conditions other than multiple sclerosis. It now includes those with Parkinson’s as well as stroke survivors.

The Chilterns Neuro Centre is a local charity in Wendover, which has been supporting people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) since 1985. A pilot programme to open up its services to people with Parkinson’s and stroke survivors began in 2022. In 2023 this arrangement was made permanent and the charity rebranded as the Chilterns Neuro Centre.

Since it opened, thousands of people with MS in the Chilterns and the surrounding area have been supported by the Centre, receiving a wide range of services including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, oxygen therapy, acupuncture, pilates, social leisure groups plus many more. Last year, the Centre began a pilot programme to open up these services to a wider group of people and now almost ten per cent of the over 650 members have Parkinson’s or are stroke survivors.

“We are really excited about what this rebrand represents,” said Richard Parkin, CEO of the Chilterns Neuro Centre. “Being able to open up the support we offer to so many more people, helping them to live life to the full, is an incredible opportunity.”

“This rebrand is about making the Centre more inclusive to those we support,” said

Karen Cross, Trustee at the Chilterns Neuro Centre who led the project. “We want all our members to feel welcome so by changing our name we will make them feel like they are part of the Centre.”

“The Centre is a place where people can go and join in activities and socialise in a safe and friendly environment,” said Kevin Towler, one of the new Parkinson’s members supported by the Centre. “I have

Wendover Youth Centre

Youth Centre appoints new Youth Leader and seeks more Trustees

A new youth leader is joining Wendover Youth centre, following the departure of Pete Swinford last month (Wendover News July). Oshemaye Egbe will take up the position of Lead Youth Worker/ Centre Manager, having spent more than ten years working with young people – most recently completing a 12 month contract with Oasis in London.

Ms Egbe will officially start at the centre on 1 September, though she will be attending some of the summer events beforehand, which started with July’s Youth Centre Fest in Ashbrook Park.

The Youth Centre is also looking to recruit more Trustees. Chairman Chris Heald says there is currently a vacancy for one Trustee, but with two more likely to appear during the next year. “We’d like to see three or four new faces really,” he says. The board of Trustees is particularly looking for someone who can help with PR, communications and fundraising. Future Trustees with knowledge of legal matters and HR would also be welcome, Chris says.

“Overall we’re doing OK but need a bit more to shift us to the next level of operation, which for us is long-term sustainability rather than year-to-year success.”

You don’t need to live in Wendover to apply to be a Trustee, but ideally you’ll live within 10 to 15 miles away. Candidates

need a DBS certificate to work with young people, but otherwise no formal qualifications are needed. Some experience of working with young people is ideal, but this might come from already being a parent, says Chris.

The Trustees meet about six times per year for around two hours on a Monday evening. Most Trustees also provide voluntary help in at least one extra area depending on their skill areas, such as recruitment, a club, the website, help with writing bids.

Being a Trustee can be a very fulfilling experience, says Chris. “This is one of the busiest locally run youth centres in Bucks. There’s year-on-year growth in activities and we’ll see 500 to 600 young people accessing our services and activities in a typical half-term period.”

The Youth Centre is in its 13th year since becoming an independently run charity. “It’s an excellent team to be part of, and new Trustees can help up to grow towards our 20th anniversary,” says Chris. “People can share or increase their skills and experience, in areas such as recruitment, chairing meetings, and running community events. They’ll know they are making a real difference to their local community and the lives of the young people in it.”

Wendover Bowls Club

I don't know if anyone if anyone has written a book on the Zen of bowls yet but if not, they should. It may not have the frenetic adrenaline rush of other sports but it has taught me a lot in the few years I have played. Patience to accept that sometimes your bowl seems to have a mind of its own and will not do what you want it to. Discipline to try to take instruction from your skip, even when you feel it is wrong. Humility to accept victory and defeat equally and sportsmanship to congratulate an opponent on a good shot even when the rat has just sent your perfect wood off into no man's land. But one of the most unexpected things that I have learned is that it is impossible to walk in a straight line. Let me explain. The green is cut several times a week in the summer, diagonally from corner to corner. I start off full of optimism that I have walked a perfect line behind the mower but when I turn at the far end the wobbly evidence is there to see. Despite my efforts the green is looking really good and will be on display in a few days time when other clubs will come and play against each other in our Gala. This is a great money raiser for Club funds, so lets hope the weather is kind.

Chiltern Miniaturists Club

Earlier this year, previously called Aylesbury Dolls House Club, has been running a project to make a Book Nook - a small miniature scene that could be placed on a bookshelf, among the books. We followed the initial evening meeting with an all-day workshop, and now in August we have one final session to finish these off. There are already some very varied scenes - ranging from woodland, to a crowded library, to a Norwegian jetty! For anyone who would like to come along, we also have a variety of other kits that can be made.

Health and wellbeing

"I thought you knew that – the supermarket, of course..."

It's easy to forget that long before our food reaches the supermarket, people have been out sowing seeds, nurturing crops, raising wildlife and producing everything we eat. In our busy lives, it is very easy to lose touch with the origins of our food.

People have been growing their own food for thousands of years, but not everyone is fortunate enough to have the space or tools to do so. Through the 'Inspired to Grow' initiative, Countryways’ mission is to inspire young people to be curious about where food comes from; understand the importance of soil, nature and biodiversity for food growing and to feel empowered to grow a diverse array of heritage and colourful fruit and vegetable plants.

Aimed at young people aged 1318, the series of six workshops will take learners on a journey that includes growing a range of different heritage fruit and vegetables, including the ingredients for pizza and soup; harvesting from food waste, container growing and cultivating a weird and wonderful range of edible fungi from lion's mane to pink oyster.

In addition they will be testing soil types, learning about compost and considering environmental factors around food production.

“We’re hoping to inspire other young people to think more about what they’re eating, and for all of us to become more involved with the whole process of getting our food from the farm to the table, something I’m really passionate about” says Tyler Connolly, one of the key driving forces behind Inspired to Grow. Countryways, a care farm halfway along the main road between Wendover and Great Missenden, has a fabulous repurposed polytunnel and a wellstocked orchard which it is looking to cultivate further through this project.

"We're really excited to have secured funding from Heart of Bucks to enable us to launch this project. Based at Road Farm, our unique setting provides the perfect environment to demonstrate food production with on-farm examples of food and livestock production as well as hands-on vegetable growing through the Inspired to Grow project," says Project Manager Emily Reddy, "We want to get young people positively inspired in growing, cooking, sharing and learning about food and at the same time raising awareness of food waste and the

environment, the importance of diversity in our diets while having fun engaging with nature, outdoors. All that will, we hope, be good for our own health and our planet's."

Primarily the project is aimed at supporting youngsters in families from the local area who are facing challenging times for one reason or another; whether it's mental health struggles, financial hardship, or loneliness and inclusion.

Participants can book onto either one or two of the sessions, or sign up to all 6, which are running free of charge on the second Thursday of the month from August to March (excluding January).

The first session, ‘Growing Pizza Perfection’ is on Thursday 10 August. The full itinerary can be found at www.roadfarmcountryways. com Tel 01494 862413. Email office. rfcountryways@gmail.com

View from the Chair

At the end of Armed Forces Week, RAF Halton exercised the freedom of Buckinghamshire by marching through Wendover flying the King’s Colour and bearing arms. I was privileged to join many residents who turned out to watch the parade and thank our local armed forces.

We would like to extend our gratitude to each and every one of you for joining us at the Freedom Parade, your presence and enthusiasm added immense joy and significance to the occasion. We would also like to express our appreciation to the organisers, RAF personnel, band members and all those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event a resounding success. Their dedication and hard work brought together a spectacle that will be remembered for years to come.

Road closures

We have been made aware of the disruption caused by the road closures and can only apologise to everyone who was negatively affected by the diversions put in place. We will be seeking a comprehensive review of what mistakes were made, in order that we learn from them.

Canal tow-path

The ongoing upgrade works taking place along the canal tow path are aimed at enhancing the overall experience and safety for all users of this popular recreational pathway. While the upgrade works are in progress, we kindly request your patience and understanding. The temporary inconvenience and restricted access are essential to ensure the works can be completed efficiently and to the highest standard.

We understand that this may cause temporary disruptions to your regular routines and recreational activities. However, we assure you that every effort is being made to minimise any inconvenience caused. The ultimate goal is to provide an improved and revitalised tow path that will benefit the community for years to come. We encourage everyone to adhere to any signage or safety instructions that may be in place during the upgrade works. Your cooperation and vigilance will contribute to a safer environment for all pedestrians, cyclists, and canal users. We are confident that the end result will be well worth the temporary disruptions. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

is still one final vacancy, should anyone be interested could you please contact the Clerk for further information.

Water-flow through Wendover

The waterways of Wendover and the Weston Turville SSSI are facing a significant threat from HS2 cutting our aquifer and diverting water towards Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury. We are potentially missing an opportunity to mitigate the impact and instead HS2 plan a multi-million-pound tunnel taking storm water past Wendover, adding to the problem.

Wendover Parish Council believes they could be utilising an existing pipe under the A413 that would lead to the Hampden Pond, in turn to the Wendover Canal and support the Weston Turville Reservoir. This would preserve the natural flow of water in Wendover’s waterways and provide a costeffective solution. We are asking HS2 to consider the alternative and cheaper option.
