Wendover Horticultural Society

At the time of writing, the PM’s announcement on lockdown restrictions for 21 June has not happened. Meanwhile a meeting is scheduled at St Anne’s Hall at 2.30 pm on 1 July. Also we are organising a coach outing to Rodmarton Manor near Cirencester on the 15 July. Both events are difficult under current rules, but we badly want to restart, should the rules be relaxed in time. The signs are not good at the moment, the Committee will have decided whether or not we go ahead, with more hindsight, with updates posted and e-mailed. For information contact Diane on diane.smith131@btinternet.com.

At our next meeting local horticultural expert Edwin Rye will be giving us ideas on colour and scent when planning our gardens. This will take place on Tuesday, 13 July at 7.30pm. We are very much hoping to meet again at St Anne’s Hall if the final restrictions are lifted on 21 June. We will be on the lawn outside (inside if wet weather) with a glass of Buck’s Fizz to celebrate! If restrictions are not lifted then we will have the meeting via Zoom. If you would like to join us or would like more details then please contact Sheila on 07743 133963.

We are thrilled to report that after the lengthiest and most disrupted season ever, Wendover Junior FC Under-14s (photo above) have won the Wycombe and South Bucks Minor Division 1 League! Our fantastic Under 14s had an unbeaten season, playing 14 matches, with 11 wins and 3 draws, finished off with an impressive 8-1 win away to Langley Hornets. The 8 stunning goals came from a Logan Newark penalty, a bottom right-hand corner shot from Finn Kirby and hat-tricks from Alex Groome and Max Sato. Huge congratulations to all involved in the team – both players and coaches!

July is a great month for visiting any of our local reserves which are open at all hours except for College Lake. The visitor centre there with its excellent cafe, shop and secondhand bookstall will be open from 10am with last entry at 4pm and the hard surface level path round the lakes is an ideal place for a having a relaxing walk. Trampers can be booked for the less mobile and there may be some places still for Tiny Tots group activities. Look online for details at bbowt. org.uk/reserves.

BBOWT is collaborating with St Mary's Church in Wendover to help with the exciting range of activities at their Climate Change Weekend on 17/18 July - more information is on pages 2 & 3. Finally, when visiting nature reserves, please park carefully, don't have BBQs, keep dogs on a short leash (sorry, no dogs at the Lake) and leave your bikes at the gate.

It is such a pleasure to welcome visiting clubs again and an equal pleasure to visit them. Let's hope the rising tide of pandemic infections does not scupper the further relaxation of the rules. Sadly one of the nice traditions after matches is still not able to take place. We always used to sit down with the opposition for a meal and a chat at the end of play. We made many good friends in that way. Now all we can manage is a socially distanced drink. Not really the same. put themselves forward for matches against other clubs fearing that they are not good enough and would let the side down. I can remember the feeling, but the best way to learn is in competitions and no one is going to grumble if you do your best. After all, even the most experienced players have off days.

Now then, I remember mentioning that the lean-to at the back of the clubhouse is always referred to as The Parrot House and I wondered why. Well, it all stems back to the dark ages when the Club was an all male affair and the ladies just used to get the tea and sit and talk. One of the braver gentlemen members said that it sounded like the parrot house at the zoo and the name stuck. Nowadays, of course, we are much more enlightened and both ladies and gentlemen are on an equal footing and there is really no need for the name to continue, but you have to call it something.

We have got a healthy number of new members in the club. They seem reluctant to Keep safe everyone, we are getting there.
