This versatile small group plays a wide range of jazz, from pieces that nod to the classic era of Louis Armstrong or Bix Beiderbecke, via Duke Ellington's compositions, through to the modern jazz revolution of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and beyond. Broadcaster and bassist Alyn Shipton formed the quartet in late 2016. The group's trumpeter Ian Smith

played with Alyn in the much-loved big band Vile Bodies, and latterly they have worked together in the Buck Clayton Legacy Band, keeping alive his repertoire. Saxophonist Olly Wilby is dazzlingly proficient in a variety of styles, often appearing with Ray Gelato’s Giants of Jive and in the vintage jazz big band, the PasadenaRoof Orchestra. Guitarist Jez Cook first played the style of jazz associated with Django Reinhardt, and he still works with the violinist Ben Holder, keeping this ‘Hot Club’ music alive. Ian Smith’s encyclopaedic knowledge of ballads and Alyn’s close connection with many giants of American jazz brings variety into the repertoire, while Jez Cook explores such Reinhardt classics as Nuages.
