Wendover News, April 2023

Spring is Sprung

As I write this, it's snowing outside and feeling decidedly un-Springy. But things change quickly and soon warmer weather will be upon us, and with it all the novelty that Spring brings.

There are many events and activities taking place in and around our vibrant community in April; some are mentioned in the banner above, some in Events and some in other pages this month. Have a flick through - you may find something that interests you in a section that you don't always read.

Thank you for supporting Wendover News for over 30 years. The advertisers who pay for space in the magazine help support the local groups who might otherwise not have their voices heard. And if finding an advert in the magazine doesn't work for you, try the online business listings at https:// wendovernews.co.uk/business-directory/ - you can search by business name or category, and everyone listed there is a Wendover News print advertiser, too.

The changes at Wendover News continue apace, and we expect that the April or May edition will be the final one produced by Wendover News Ltd, with the new CIC taking over soon. More about this on page 16

One of the changes happening here is my departure. I've been with Wendover News nearly ten years and want the new company to have someone at its helm who can stamp the new entity with his or her own mark.

Those of you that know me know that I volunteer with a few Wendover organisations and that will continue - if you want me, you'll find me somewhere around Wendover once my stint as editor ends.

Finally, thanks to the teams who have worked with Wendover News Ltd in the past and moved it into its new future. This includes all the volunteer deliverers - your commitment is most commendable and valued; thank you for your time and effort.

Monday Club

Hello my name is Jamie, let me tell you about the Monday Club.

We at the Monday Club are a team of trained volunteers who endeavour to give our visitors with Dementia a comfortable and pleasant experience. We totally understand people with Dementia and their families’ need for support, and we are here to help!

Hopefully, I’ve got you interested! Let me give you a little insight to our Monday Club. We meet weekly and have two morning sessions. The atmosphere is electric with laughing, chatting, doing puzzles, members engrossed in dominoes and other board games; the list goes on, but hey, we could not end a session without the bonus of dancing and singing to live music.

Caring for loved ones 24/7 is extremely exhausting. We understand and welcome carers who sit together over a cuppa; chat, and perhaps share tips and concerns. There are also very experienced volunteers who can answer questions and help guide carers through specific personal issues.

I am aware that there is always someone needing your help for one good cause or another. I’m afraid this time it’s me! Let me explain: WDS Monday Club also have a wonderful group of ladies who give their time to make teas, coffees and serve yummy cakes.

Here comes the sales pitch: it really would be the icing on the cake (pun intended) if this group could be increased in number. Only two volunteers are required each week from 10am until 12.45pm. This would mean giving up your time one morning a week over a four- to six-week period. If you feel you would like to help or even give it a try, do contact us on 07732342409 or email wendoverds@gmail.com.

Please take a look at our website for more information: www.wendoverds.org.uk

We often say: “Asking for support is not giving in, it’s the strength to carry on.”

Thank you for your time, Jamie

Ellesborough Road diversion

The most visible sign of progress in March has been the erection of the “Bailey bridge” for the diversion of Ellesborough Road (photo below).

Noting the importance of the road to the local community, Parliament directed HS2 to create a temporary diversion route behind the remaining cottages to allow traffic to flow during the construction of the Green Tunnel. The diversion is expected to open in July and be in place for about two years to allow excavation of the cutting through the existing road. The cutting will be used as a “Haul Road” for dump trucks moving spoil north from Small Dean to Stoke Mandeville. After installation of the concrete tunnel shell, the ground will be backfilled and the road reopened on its original track.

More road closures

Tying the diversion road into the existing

Ellesborough Road has involved about four weeks of closures for excavation to identify the utility services that will need to be repositioned. We can expect further closures when the actual diversion works take place. Similarly, there will be night time and weekend closures on the A413 until July to shift the road eastwards enabling the safe construction of a viaduct pier at Small Dean next to the railway line. We’ve complained about the inadequate and misleading signage at both sites affecting commuters, and have requested roadside notification of active night A413 closures at Great Missenden to enable motorists to avoid the Small Dean area. Traffic lights on the A413 and the bypass have also led to congestion in central Wendover during morning rush hours.

Green Tunnel preparations

The Environment Agency are still not permitting any significant excavation of the Green Tunnel cutting due to the potential impact on the Coombe Hill Aquifer, and we have sought an assurance through our MP that this will continue. However, we understand that HS2 will be allowed to strip the topsoil and the diggers and dump trucks are scheduled to start “bulk earthworks” in May. HS2 have also applied to have extended working

hours (7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 5pm on Saturdays). We expect Bucks Council will agree to this, in line with their previous decision at Great Missenden. We are concerned about the noise levels involved, and plan to undertake test measurements with HS2.

Help from HS2?

In addition to resolving your complaints, if you think HS2 can help with a social value project in the Wendover area please contact the HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 (which is available 24 hours a day) or email hs2enquiries@ hs2.org.uk. HS2 can support in a variety of ways including financial donations, volunteering hours and material donations. Information on funding is available at https://hs2funds.org.uk/about/ .

If you need further help, want to join us, or have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org

HS2 Construction in Wendover - Update

To enable the construction of the Wendover Green Tunnel, we need to temporarily divert Ellesborough Road and Bacombe Lane.

The diverted Ellesborough Road will go around the back of the existing houses closest to Pound Street leading to Wendover town centre. The realignment will also include a bridge to allow our site traffic to pass underneath with a footpath maintaining connectivity for pedestrians.

Bacombe Lane will be single track with a bridleway for pedestrians. Access will be from the new Ellesborough Road alignment. The original access of Bacombe Lane over the Wendover Bypass will be temporarily closed while we construct the Wendover Green Tunnel.

Please see the summary of works below:

• Utility diversion works

• Installation of temporary bridge

• East and west connections to the current carriageway

• Temporary diversion to

be operational throughout construction of Wendover Green Tunnel

• Both Ellesborough Road and Bacombe Lane will be reinstated towards the end of the project.

Some of these works will require traffic management including road closures. This is to ensure the safety of road users and our workforce, we will communicate further details on this in due course.

The Ellesborough Road diversion is due to open in the summer and Bacombe Lane is due to be operational in late 2023.

To stay informed of our works don’t forget to register for email updates on the HS2 website which gives you a choice of how you would like to receive information from us. To find out more, visit your community website at www.hs2.org.uk/inyour-area. If you have a question about HS2 or our works, please contact our HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk

Wendover Wildbelt

Climate Action Wendover is thrilled to announce that Wendover Wildbelt is well and truly on the way to becoming an essential haven for all the flora and fauna of Wendover – including us human residents!

An area of almost 2 acres between London Rd and the Chiltern Rail line, adjacent to the allotments, has been leased from Wendover Parish Council for a peppercorn rent. We will develop it using “food forest” principles and the first stage has involved the planting of fruit trees, soft fruit bushes, nuts and herbs. The site preparation and planting could never have been accomplished without the amazing efforts of volunteers from CLAW and The Chiltern Society – a massive thanks to Amanda Barnicoat, Project Manager with The Chiltern Society, who masterminded the planning and arranged volunteer workparties to get the project off the ground.

Wendover Wildbelt has benefitted from grants

made by Wendover Parish Council, Wendover & Villages Community Board, The Chiltern Society and Local Giving, we really appreciate their support – and we are also thankful for a number of individual donations. We would also like to express particular thanks to Cllr. Stephen Worth who has championed the cause with our Parish Council and done so much to enable this project to come to life! Thanks to him and the staff at WPC who have helped in so many ways.

What next? It will take a few years for the trees and bushes to mature, but you can look forward to an amazing selection of items to forage. We hope to install a water capture/storage shed and replace the fenced entrance with a gate to make the site easily accessible. We will continue to add to the planting, but over time the site should become self-sustaining and need very little maintenance. We hope you enjoy this community asset – look for us on Google Maps!

Trusts in Wills

Sometimes, you may want to provide for someone, but do not want them to have the actual money themselves. This could be for a number of reasons, including if the person is ill, vulnerable (possibly from themselves or a third party), going through a relationship break up, on means tested benefits, or you want to protect your assets for other reasons.

There are steps that can be taken in carefully drafted Wills to provide for your beneficiaries, but also protect them and your assets. This is often with the use of trusts in Wills.

What is a trust?

A trust is a vehicle where assets are held by your nominated people (trustees) for your beneficiaries. Well prepared Will trusts offer protection and flexibility and can be an important planning tool for protecting family assets.

I will outline some different types of trusts and their uses in later articles. These include:

Asset protection

Inheritance tax and care fees are concerns

for many people who want to leave as much of their assets to their family or friends as possible.

Cross generational planning

Provisions can be made to carry out succession planning across the generations. More complex family arrangements

For example, you may wish to provide for your other half during their lifetime, but then make sure that your assets will then pass to your children from a previous relationship in due course.

Vulnerable beneficiaries

Will trusts can protect, and provide for, vulnerable beneficiaries, whatever the reason they may be vulnerable.

Planning with trusts in Wills is complex and I recommend that you take specialist professional advice.

If you have any questions, or would like to discuss any of the above, or related matters, please contact me on iain@wanstallconsulting. co.uk or 01296 415700. You can also find more on my website: www.wanstallconsulting.co.uk

A Springtime Celebration with Wendover Choral Society

Those of you who were part of the bumper audience for our performance of Handel’s Messiah in December will know what a fantastic event it was. But how do you top such an event? Well, for our Spring concert, we decided to do something very different and with the prospect of a Coronation in May, what could be more appropriate than ‘A Springtime Celebration’?

The programme has a largely English feel, featuring two of our most popular contemporary composers, John Rutter and Bob Chilcott, plus an Interlude of Percy Grainger songs. Chilcott’s A Little Jazz Mass is unlike anything we’ve sung before and we’re sure that you’ll appreciate the joy

of ‘swing’. We’re delighted to be joined by international tenor, Anando Mukerjee, who, since his debut at Belgrade National Opera in 2006, has performed at some of the world’s finest musical venues, including Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Wigmore Hall. There will also be some rousing brass pieces, featuring the wonderful Berkeley Brass Ensemble (photo), an exciting new London-based group, and organ solos from the very talented Adrian Bawtree, Director of Music and Organist at Rochester Cathedral.

There really is, in this concert, something for everyone, young, older and in between. Grab your tickets from Just, Wendover High Street or from wendoverchoral@gmail.com and join us for a roof-lifting celebration on Saturday 29 April See advert page 4.

A record amount was raised at this year’s Pop Up Art Weekend as over a thousand art enthusiasts descended on the Chilterns MS Centre in Wendover for its annual exhibition and sale which featured over 80 incredibly talented local artists covering a wide range of artistic styles from the more traditional landscapes to graffiti art.

The exhibition began with a special preview evening on the Friday night attended by many high profile figures including Rob Butler MP; Cllr Christopher Townsend, Mayor of Aylesbury; Cllr Tim Dixon, Mayor of Tring; Cllr Josephine Biss, Deputy Mayor of Princes Risborough; and Chris Williams, Trustee at the Clare Foundation which sponsored the event.

In total the charity raised almost £21,000 which will be used to support its work enabling people living with neurological conditions to live life to the full.

MS Centre

“The Pop-Up Art Weekend is our biggest fundraising event of the year and we are thrilled with how it went,” said Hannah Prentice, Community and Events Manager at the Chilterns MS Centre.

“There was a real buzz around the Centre for the whole weekend, with people of all ages enjoying the amazing art on display and the equally impressive cake that our café was selling. I would just like to thank the incredible team of volunteers that helped make it all happen.”

The Chilterns MS Centre provides treatments and services to people with multiple sclerosis, empowering them to live healthier and happier lives. Last year the Centre began a pilot programme to open their services to people with other neurological conditions, starting with Parkinson’s and stroke survivors.

Support local hospice care this

at the new Walk of Light

Florence Nightingale Hospice

Charity returns with a brand new fundraising event this summer on Saturday 24 June

The inaugural Walk of Light will give the charity’s supporters the opportunity to come together to remember loved ones, show their support and raise funds for local hospice care.

The event will see walkers complete 5 or 10 mile circular routes around Watermead Lake and through the green Meadowcroft Open Space, before returning to Watermead to cheer fellow walkers over the line and watch the event’s closing ceremony at 9.30pm as the sun goes down.

Walkers will be able to dedicate a ‘Light of Love’ to a loved one or add a message of thanks and support to the hospice team – the lights will be lit to illuminate the lake as part of the closing ceremony, followed by a low noise firework display.

“We are really excited to launch this new event and hope that our local community will turn out to support us,” says Steve Butcher, Events Manager at the charity. “We believe it’s going to be a really enjoyable and memorable event for

MasterClass

Registration costs £20 (£17 Early Bird until 30 April). Walkers can choose their start time and route on Saturday 24 June and stay to enjoy refreshments and entertainment at the finish.

Walkers will receive a free commemorative Walk of Light 2023 T-shirt and Finisher’s Medal as well as the opportunity to add a message to the charity’s Lights of Love.

Wendover Community Library refurbishment project

Following the public engagement day held in October, a number of good suggestions were put forward to help enhance the scheme. These included improving the front of the building and surrounding area. The process of seeking additional funding to potentially incorporate this as part of the improvement works is underway. This has led to further planning amendments which unfortunately has caused a delay. Building works should start in August with a view to a December reopening. An interim library will be held in the main meeting room, subject to agreement from the contractors.

Wendover Warm Café

Churches Together in Wendover and Wendover Parish Council would like to thank all the volunteers who supported Wendover Warm Café during the coldest months of the year. They are also looking at what other activities might be helpful to the wider community as we continue to face the cost of living challenge. These might include debt management and budgeting advice, provision of ethical finance services (including establishing or working with an existing credit union), cooking classes for nutritional meals on a budget, provision of hot meals, other food related projects (for example establishing a community fridge or communal pantry). If you have ideas about this programme or other ideas which could be helpful to the wider community, please contact via ian.sansbury@stmaryswendover.org.

The Future of Wendover News

You may already be aware that Wendover News Ltd – the company behind this publication – is in the process of handing the reins over to the community of Wendover and the surrounding villages. Work progresses to ensure a smooth transition to the new company, which is likely to be formed in the next few weeks. We are taking care to protect the interests of our advertisers so that they will be able to stay in contact with their customers throughout and after the transition.

We are currently working with a small number of volunteers to form a Foundation Board for the new company, which will be entirely owned and led by the people of Wendover and the surrounding villages. If you would like to be involved in the establishment of a new company either as a director, mentor or any other role, please write to jane@wendovernews.co.uk

If you have already given us your details, we appreciate your patience during this very busy time. We hope to have met you together in person before the end of March and continuing into April to bring you up to date with everything that is going on. Most importantly, a big thank you to our small army of local deliverers – we wouldn’t have got this far without you!

Community Car AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Wendover Community Car (known as Wendover Action Group) will be taking place on Friday 12 May 2023 at 6.00pm in the Scout Hut, Clay Lane Wendover HP22 6NS. Everyone is welcome. This is an opportunity for Wendover residents to learn about what we are doing and how we are meeting the needs of Wendover and nearby communities. We welcome anybody who would like to hear about what we do or make a contribution to our work. All you need to do is to put the date and time in your diary and you are very welcome to come along.

Wendover Football Club

Wendover Firsts recent fixtures culminated in a ferocious League Cup quarter final at St Leonards. Highlights include Luigi Passaro falling victim to a disgraceful challenge, with the ensuing chaos resulting in a straight red for club veteran, cousin, and old enough to know better, Bruno Passaro. Ultimately Tom Cheeseborough shook off injury to heroically make two penalty saves in a tense shootout victory. Wins against Ludgershall, Tring

Athletic Zebras and a point against Elmhurst makes it four unbeaten plus a semi-final place. Drama for the Reserves saw them narrowly miss out on their own semi-final in the Reserves Cup despite a last minute equaliser by Matty Hodges forcing Prestwood Reserves to extra time. Elsewhere, Box-to-box midfielder Callum Thomas scored and missed penalties within five minutes against the ten men of Thame C, drawing the game 1-1 in the process. Mixed results see the Reserves comfortably mid table.

Pace BIG Walk

This year’s Pace BIG Walk routes will take in the ancient Ridgeway Trail. There is a choice of 18m, 12m, 6m or The Superhero Mile route — something to suit all ages and abilities. This is a great opportunity to set yourself a challenge for 2023 and have some outdoor fun.

By taking part in the BIG Walk, you will not only have the opportunity to explore this beautiful countryside in a completely unique way, but you will also be helping Pace to provide life changing support to babies, children and young people with neurodisabilities. To sign up visit https:// thepacecentre.org/event/the-big-walk/

Wendover Horticultural Society

The April meeting takes place at St Anne’s Hall at 2.30 on Thursday 6 April. Speaker Roger Reynolds is an award-winning botanist and plant illustrator, talking on “The Illustration of Flowers and Fruit”, which played a big part in scientific research and plant breeding. Admission £3.00.

Lindengate Mental Health Charity celebrating its 10th Anniversary

In 2013, hoping to operate a pilot scheme that would provide horticultural therapy for local adults with mental health issues, Lindengate’s founders asked for a small plot on an underused allotment adjoining Wyevale Garden Centre near their homes in Wendover, Buckinghamshire. Instead the garden centre offered them the entire five acre site. The site was waist-high in thistles

and brambles, broken greenhouses and sheds. 10 years on the weeds have gone, the sheds are repaired and painted, two huge polytunnels have been constructed and there is a yurt (which you can hire). The secret garden is now a stunning six acre wildlife garden with a Heritage Orchard, Nature Reserve, Kitchen Gardens and two RHS Chelsea Gold Award Winning Exhibits based next to Dobbies Garden Centre.

Every year Lindengate supports over 2000 people through their nature-based wellbeing programmes, sessions and Open Garden visitors. They provide adult wellbeing sessions, programmes for schools, young people, anyone needing support with low to moderate mental health, as well as those living with dementia and memory loss and their carers. Alongside this they now have a dedicated staff team and over 200 volunteers from horticultural experts to people who just want to get their hands dirty and meet new people.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, volunteers and staff are currently transforming part of the gardens into a brand-new Apothecary Garden. Yew Trees are now in place, with landscaping and planting due to commence shortly. The Apothecary Garden will contain herbs and flowers grown for their natural healing properties. The new garden will create a new space for visitors and participants to learn, work and relax. Next to the Heritage Orchard, they are creating a swale. Swales are a type of sustainable drainage system which slows run-off, intercepts and filters pollutants as well as helping natural infiltration into soil. They will enhance the swale habitat by planting and sowing wildflowers and other native wetland species. It will also provide shelter and food for invertebrates, birds and mammals. Both gardens should be completed by the end of April.

See advert page 2 for an event in May and visit www.lindengate.org.uk for more information.

Wendover Canal Trust

In February the Wendover Canal Trust held an event at the headquarters of the Dunstable & District Boat Club at Cheddington to thank their volunteers for the continuing hard work in restoring the canal. The DDBC has been very supportive of the Trust and have raised over £7000 towards the restoration costs.

Various Trust Officers gave a progress report on the restoration including Clive Thompson, Chairman, Mikk Bradley, Site Manager and Peter Elwin, Partnerships Director who has been very successful in securing £762,500 of funding for the towpath upgrade starting at Wendover together with £155,000 towards removal of the Old Tip at Little Tring. In recent weeks the Canal & River Trust, owners of the canal, have been clearing weed growth, starting at Wendover, to improve water flow.

Further applications are in process of being submitted including to the Heritage Lottery Fund. There are concerns that work may have to be suspended after 2024 if further funding is not obtained.

Wendover Cricket Club

Wendover Cricket Club is preparing for the new season. Indoor training is coming to an end in March and then the focus will switch to outside after the Easter weekend. 13 junior and 2 girls only teams across 8 age groups will be playing some 130 matches as well as in several tournaments.

The senior teams will on Saturdays be competing in the CMB Premier and the Mid Bucks League Division 2; there will also be a full Sunday programme of matches.

Our game cannot run without officials - Umpires and Scorers. Do you fancy doing either to help the club, especially on Saturdays?

New junior and senior players are welcome and in particular any girls in the 9 to 13 age range, although some junior groups are at full capacity. If interested or able to help with the umpiring and/ or scoring, contact Jonathan Seabrook on 07767 148119 or jseabrook@talktalk.net.

The Village Cup will be running again during May to July at Witchell. More Information and contacts can be found on the website www.pitchero.com/ clubs/wendovercricketclub

In the background is the ongoing development of the new ground at Tring Road. The archaeological works on the site are finally likely to start in April after a completely avoidable year’s delay; meanwhile most of the designs have been completed although the pre-start planning conditions remain to be cleared. There are still some further obstacles to resolve with HS2 before any construction can begin.

Scouts Endurance

If you were out and about for a local country walk on the weekend of 4 March, you may have been surprised to see rather a lot of young people in high vis jackets walking too! 800 people took part in a variety of endurance events ranging from 10km for Cubs, to 40km for Scouts and 60 or 80km for Explorer Scouts. 23 Scouts from 1st Wendover Apollo took part in Endurance40 and had 14 hours to walk 40km around a circular walk from Great Missenden, to Chesham, Wendover Woods and back to Great Missenden, visiting checkpoints along the way. With ages ranging from just over 10 years to 13 years old, we were just pleased to have so many taking part (let alone finishing). We were even more delighted and proud that over half of our Scouts completed the full 40km – a fantastic achievement all round.

Each of our 5 walking groups was shadowed and supported by an adult. Aside from the 40km they had to walk, they had the added task of keeping the young people moving and patiently answering the repeated “are we nearly there yet” questions! However, to see the smiles on all their faces made it worthwhile – even more so when one Scout was overheard saying, “Just think, we’re actually making memories today that will really stick with us.”

If you enjoy walking (and other outdoor activities!) then why not get involved? We’d love to have you along to Scouts. For more information, please email apollo@1stwendoverscouts.co.uk.

Into the swing of Spring with BBOWT Chilterns Group

April sees the return of many migrant birds to our local reserves. They tend to burst into full song when they arrive, choose mates and set up their territories so this is a good time to listen out for them. At Weston Turville Reservoir in particular we can with care get close to the reedbed action with reed and sedge warblers plus the resident water rails and reed buntings. Blackcaps will be very active in the scrubby areas. Please be very careful to keep dogs under control on a short lead at this time of the year. There are various apps for mobile phones or you can go online with the RSPB to hear and identify bird song. The spring also sees the return of the litter scourge so if you'd like to help keep things under control please contact the litter patrol organiser Susanna Allford on susannawtr@outlook.com to hear how you can help.

BBOWT arranges small group walks and field trips in spring and summer so please look at bbowt. org.uk/events to see what's coming up and to book a place. They start on Saturday 15 April at Dancersend Reserve. You'll also find details of activities for adults and children organised by the Learning Team at College Lake where the

reserve and visitor centre cafe and shop are open daily except for Mondays (unless they are bank holidays).

Finally, in April we prepare for the first of our Plant Markets which raise essential funds for the Wildlife Trust. The spring sale will be on Sunday 14 May at College Lake so this is the time to pot up and label some offcuts of your favourite perennials and to think about preparing to supply some home made produce. Wendover Bowls Club

Recently the rafters of the Club rattled to the sound of half a dozen noble steeds as they galloped down a fiendish course to the cheers of scores of very noisy punters. All right, perhaps my description is a little vivid but the cheers were genuine and there were six horses even though they were rather battered and cut out of plywood and propelled by large bouncy plastic foam dice. A really super evening that convinced me that I am useless at picking winners, even when they are wooden cutouts.

Time flies and we will soon be let loose outdoors. I already have my grass cutting rota. The rooks are excavating again. If anyone has a spare small boy who is available to stand on the green 24 hours a day with a rattle please contact the Club.

Meanwhile we look forward to a quiz, the preseason dinner and various finals to round off the indoor year. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for good weather this summer with plenty of sunshine to cheer us up. Don

Wendover WI Ladies in the Pink

To mark Valentine's Day the ladies of Wendover WI celebrated in style by wearing evening dresses and fancy shoes to their monthly meeting, which fell on 14 February. Everyone received an intricate red carnation crafted from a serviette by a team of WI members.

Exceptionally, Peter Andre attended in the form of a cardboard cutout and Alison Bailey from the Amersham Museum gave an excellent presentation about the local and surprisingly prolific suffragette movement.

The ladies enjoyed pink Prosecco and a wide range of pink savoury and sweet delicacies.

All attendees enjoyed a fabulous 'pink' eveningeven Peter Andre!

Tribute: Dr Colin Riley

Dr Colin Riley, a long-serving GP in Wendover, died peacefully on 13 February 2023, surrounded by his children. He had lived very actively and independently for several years with Alzheimer's, before moving into full-time care. The family are very grateful for the support of Wendover Dementia Support and the Dementia Café.

In 1958, after national service at RAF Halton hospital specialising in obstetrics, Dr Riley joined the Wendover GP practice of Drs Orme and MacConnell. When they retired in 1964, he became head of the growing practice, managing the initial construction of the Health Centre and the integration of medical services provided there - quite a new concept at the time.

He was known for his total dedication to the community. When council workers arrived with chainsaws to chop down the mature lime trees along Aylesbury Road, he objected vociferously - and successfully. Together with Tony Mogford and Frank Goodson, he established the Wendover Society and became its President, promoting Wendover as a thriving community and protecting the fabric of our historic village and its surroundings.

He was President and odd-job man for the Youth

Centre for many years - a natural DIY 'fixer', he was always making or mending something and could often be found up a ladder or on the roof. After retirement in 1994, he retained his links with the Health Centre by volunteering and fundraising for the Friends of the Surgery. He was an active fundraiser for a number of local charities, and also for RNLI – he was a Sea Scout in his youth and spent many happy hours messing about in boats in adult life, both in Cornwall and nearer home.

He obtained his pilot's licence and flew small planes, gliders and microlights; and he loved his cars, ranging from a red Morgan (before the arrival of his six children) to a classic Mercedes sports car (after the children had left), and including a bubble car and a Riley marque Mini. From spring to late autumn, he could often be found on his ride-on mower - the family called him the Lawn Ranger. Music of all kinds was important to him, and his own piano repertoire ranged from Fats Waller to Bach. A committed churchgoer, he had a special fondness for the quiet of the 8am services. He was devoted to his wife, Diana, whom he met aged 17 when they were both at medical school. She died in 2007, but Dr Riley continued to live in the same home where they brought up their family.

He is survived by six children and 13 grandchildren, scattered across the UK and occasionally further afield, who all miss him very much.

Recent observations about Dr Riley on Facebook: Denise Bell - Dr Riley was our family doctor for many many years & I remember his kindness, humour & dedication to being a GP, as well as to Wendover. Such a wonderful Dr & a gentleman. Condolences to all of his family & friends.

Ginnette Field - RIP Dr Riley. I grew up with his children, played in the pool in the back garden. He was a brilliant GP back in the day when home visits (usually caused by me getting into some kind of scrape) were the norm and he would pop across the road to our house. In more recent years he was a kind and generous neighbour (via the back garden of the Red House) to my elderly mum. He gave so much to our community and will be missed by many.

Sue Atkinson - He was incredibly supportive of Wendover Youth Club when myself and Kate Jones ran it. Very generous with his time and enthusiasm to keep it running after BCC stepped away. I hope many of the young people who attended the Youth Club will see this and recognise his contribution, enabling us all to have some great memories.

Wendover Shed

The Wendover Shed officially opened the morning of Saturday 4 March. A crowd of about 30 people of all ages attended to have a look round the facilities, learn more - and have some cake and a cuppa!

Chair Bob Duggan spoke about the purpose and need for the Shed, and offered thanks to Wendover Parish Council and also to Ben the tractor driver for saving their bacon (or at least the 'Hog'), when they had trouble siting the Groundhog Welfare Container, kindly donated by GE HealthCare, due to muddy conditions on site. Bob and patron Shirley Phipps, who has been involved since the initial meeting about setting up a Shed in Wendover, deftly cut and served the cake, which featured the Wendover Shed logo.

The first official Shed event, Coffee and Natter, took place Tuesday 7 March and repeats three times each week.

If you or someone you know would benefit from joining the Wendover Shed, please get in touch: Bob Duggan - 01296 623869 / 07921 824836 email: info@wendovershed.org.uk website: www.wendovershed.org.uk www.facebook.com/wendovershedders www.instagram.com/wendovershed

Congratulations to Mr Robinson, the latest recipient of a prestigious Station Commander Coin. Group Captain Garwood had the pleasure of presenting the coin, recognising Mr Robinson’s continued commitment and recent achievements in his role at RAF Halton Workshops.

Suicide Prevention Fundraiser

On 2 Feb 2023, Flight Sergeant Andrew Smith set out on a 33-hour weightlifting challenge to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Throughout the challenge he lifted 4129kg on the even hours and 1454kg on the odd hours. Andrew explains these weights were chosen for a very specific reason:

“In 2021, 4129 males and 1454 females committed suicide in England and Wales, my best friend Stu was one of them. He was 33 years old when he committed suicide and 2nd Feb this year would have been his 35th birthday.”

Andrew raised an immense total of £1560 for local suicide prevention charity Hector’s House. He extended a special thank you to everyone who came to support him during the challenge and to Hector's House for their ongoing work and support throughout his journey and others.

Editor's note - Information on this page from the Royal Air Force Halton Facebook page. Photos Crown Copyright.

Anthony Martin was awarded a CBE last June in the Queen's Jubilee Birthday Honours List for his services to charity. The investiture took place on Tuesday 14 February at Windsor Castle and the award was presented by His Majesty King Charles III.

Tony Martin was a war time baby, evacuated to the family farm in Essex, spent in the company of his grandmother mother, and cousins. As a young adult, Tony's school first XI cricket team beat the local Essex County side. The school was given a day off in recognition of this achievement! Instant popularity! Soon afterwards he went to the US for 3 months and ended up working there for over 20 years, rising to the position of President of a bank which was situated in Beverley Hills. This gave him the opportunity to meet many people well known in the entertainment industry.

He was headhunted and returned to England at a time when his mother started to become frail so everything fitted together well. He had moved to working in the recruitment and staffing industry, only recently retiring completely as Chairman of a global recruitment company based in the UK.

Perhaps the early experiences with animals inspired the love which led him to found the

Anthony V Martin Charitable Foundation, endowing it solely with his own funds. The Foundation is dedicated to improving animal welfare around the world, starting with a project in Barbados. There were 9000 stray dogs on the island. Tony's team managed to round up almost all the dogs, using a neutering bus. Three vets worked on the dogs before freeing them. The stray dog population was reduced to 2000. With experience such projects became even more successful, for example in Tangiers where a sanctuary was established and neutered dogs released ensuring that the street problem reduced naturally. During the Covid crisis, the Foundation became a pandemic fund provider for organisations supporting dog welfare.

Tony’s Charitable Foundation has been supporting Legislation in the House of Commons, banning Trophy Hunting In Africa, and returning to the UK with Wild Animal parts. This led to him being given an Honorary Fellowship of the the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in September 2021.

Tony said after the investiture, "It was a great honour to be awarded a CBE by His Majesty King Charles, it was an unforgettable day. I am very proud to have my work recognised in this way."

Wendover Parish CouncilMatters Arising

View from the Chair

Well so much for spring! It is snowing heavily as I write this View! Parish news: the clock has been repaired again, so hopefully that will last for a few more weeks or even years, this time. It is lovely to hear the striking of the hours again.

It has been disappointing to hear about fires being lit in various green spaces during the half term holiday. This is clearly dangerous and unacceptable, and any information should be shared with the police or the Clerk.

Also, we have seen several dogs around and in the Hampden Pond. This area is for wildlife and nesting birds so if you have to take your dog inside the fence, it should be kept on the lead. There are other areas where they can run free. It would be a shame to have to ban dogs from that area. There are also fallen trees which are scheduled to be removed before the end of March so please be careful.

Our Manor Waste consultation has started with a very healthy 200+ respondents in the first couple of days. You may have seen our staff at the markets

asking people to comment in person especially if they do not have access to the internet, to gain as much feedback as possible. I do hope that you have participated, and I look forward to seeing the results after it closes on 24 March. As part of this consultation a newly revived business group has been meeting, seeking to encourage more visitors to the centre.

We will also be looking at the Community awards, more in the next issue, which will be presented at the Annual Parish Meeting (see advert page 5). Other exciting news relates to the proposed Skatepark. We have had some tenders from companies to work with us on developing a

concept and gaining funding for the project. Our decision will be made on which company is awarded the job, at the Amenities meeting on 21 March. When designs have been drawn up, we will run a survey to see which is the preferred one, as we did for the Haddington Park, so watch this space!

On a financial front, Bucks Council have agreed a balanced budget (as have WPC), which includes more for potholes, a desperate need, and without a loss of other services. It is good to know that we can count on those that we currently have in place.
