Did you know that one in six people in this country have some kind of hearing problem? Hearing loss can affect anyone of any age. Hearing aids have improved enormously, they use all the advances in modern technology, but even the best aids don't cure hearing loss. It is still a problem to hear in noisy social or work environments, but all is not lost! Research has shown that joining a lipreading class helps to avoid the damaging social isolation and depression that can accompany hearing loss. Lipreading classes teach you to let your eyes help your ears fill in the things you miss. They are small friendly classes, and as well as learning lipreading we cover, how hearing works and the things that can go wrong, equipment and organisations that can help, strategies to cope in various situations, and much more, oh, and we laugh a lot! My name is Molly Berry, and I am profoundly deaf, I started losing my hearing when I was in my thirties, and 7 years ago I was given a Cochlear Implant. It was very successful, and so I decided to retrain as a lipreading tutor to pass on the skills I relied on. I teach in Beds, Bucks and Herts, and there are now two classes in Harpenden on Tuesdays, in the morning and in the evening. For more information about this and other classes or to join a class, call or text me on 07741 095921 or email mb.lipreading@gmail.com

The Red Baron 27th - 30th July 7.30pm / 31st July 3pm & 7pm Manfred von Richthofen was one of WW1’s aerial superstars. An aristocrat and huntsman, he loved flight and trained himself to be a superb air-borne killer. He was hardly ever seen with a girl though. Annoyed with being pestered by his comrades, he calls on Coco but all Manfred does is talk about planes and guns - and shooting down enemy flyers. For most of us, WW1 means trench warfare. But in 1915, for the first time in history, young men were soaring across the skies, fighting in flimsy machines for country and personal glory. This play is about them.....and one man's astonishing change of mind. £8, ages 14+ RAF Museum London NW9 5LL www.rafmuseum.org.uk

You Decide the Winners Before leaving, visitors to St Albans Art Society’s annual summer exhibition will be asked to select two winners - their overall favourite, who will be awarded the Terry Biggs Cup, and the most original and creative exhibit, for the Challenge Trophy. The organisers are confident that the ‘judge for yourselves’ idea will encourage more visitors to the show which was first held more than a century ago. More than 200 works of art will be on display, with the majority up for sale. The exhibition promises to be a colourful and spectacular event, ranging from dramatic landscapes in and around St Albans, still life, abstracts and seascapes, using a variety of media. Members of the Society will also be invited to produce works depicting different aspects of St Albans. As the Old Town Hall is currently being refurbished, how appropriate that the winner of last year’s St Albans Trophy, ‘Paddy’ by Mandy Reekie depicts ‘Paddy’ standing at the entrance to Dagnall Street with the venue of this years exhibition, the Baptist Church, in the distance! www.stalbans-artsociety.org.uk
