NOW at the Cathedral St Albans Museum + Gallery opens 8th June Enjoy a weekend of lively events and activities to celebrate the opening of this landmark cultural site. Explore the rich and fascinating history of St Albans at the new museum and gallery - with exhibitions, art installations, restored historic spaces, trails and activities - there’s something for everyone to enjoy. If you can’t make it to the opening weekend, don’t worry, the museum will be free to visit and is open 7 days a week. There will be an array of great events from monthly museum lates and free lunchtime talks to printing workshops with professional artists and family festivals. Alongside a huge roster of events, the new spaces will also host regularly changing exhibitions. Come and see First Impressions, a major new exhibition exploring 500 years of printing in St Albans’; or lose yourself among art installations from Susie MacMurray and Lyndall Phelps. A wonderful new café and shop will stock local, seasonal products. Cultivate Arts Festival 21st - 24th June This summer, Harpenden will host its first festival celebrating the creative arts. ‘Cultivate’ takes place over four days, at a variety of locations across the town, where there will be exhibitions, concerts, art installations, plays, poetry readings, creative workshops and events for everyone to enjoy and get involved in. A trail map is available to help plan your journey so you don’t miss a thing. The Festival is the brainchild of John Swain from Harpenden Churches Together, who commented: “The idea came from a similar event I’d seen when on holiday. I was excited by the idea of people from across the town coming together to share their enthusiasm for the arts. The theme that runs through all our events is ‘Beauty, Order and Abundance’ - so you’re in for a treat.” Some of the highlights of the programme include imaginative and exciting installations. Enter the world of Narnia as the Methodist Church on the High Street is transformed into a wonderland. There will be a promenade performance of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ on Friday evening and two performances on Saturday. At St John’s Church in Southdown, an ambitious art installation will fill the space with colour. Based on the theme of the environment and our place within it, there will be an accompanying programme of inspiring walks, talks, music and wine. In addition, a variety of art will be on show and on sale throughout the four days at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Rothamsted Avenue and at Christ Church in Vaughan Road, with an art demonstration on Saturday afternoon. Try your hand at quilting at Cornelia’s coffee shop on Saturday morning. Come and join the dance performance and workshop at Christ Church on Saturday afternoon. Enjoy Harpenden Choral Society’s Concert of Sacred Music in St Nicholas’ Church on Saturday evening. As a grand finale to the festival, there will be a music concert for everyone on Sunday evening at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Local artist Rory Browne who is part of the organising team adds “We are thrilled with the variety of events on offer - there is sure to be something for everyone.” Pick up a Cultivate Trail Map from the library, your local church or at the Harpenden Churches Together stand at the Carnival on 9th June. Courses in the arts are on offer for adults with mental health issues offering the chance to try out different art forms such as creative writing, visual arts and drama. Ayot St Lawrence Annual Art Show 9th - 11th June This year the Art Show will introduce a number of new artists including landscape painters Jasmine Rae and Rory Brown, and welcome back Andrew King, Anne Songhurst, Susan Gray, Rhodri Jones, and many others including Sam Smith who went from volunteer one year to overnight success the next. He is a self-taught hobbyist painter who exhibited last year and was so popular that he sold out on the first night and could have sold one painting, the Blue Lady, many times over. Home made cakes and refreshments will be served in the marquee overlooking the wild flower meadow, and the Brocket Arms will be holding its annual beer festival at the same time, making it a quintessentially English village day out.
