welcome to march

Spring is here and what joy to have the tulips and daffodils brightening up the garden at last. This months magazine is full of exciting things to do, the first ever ‘St Albans Film Festival’, a week of music with ‘St Albans MusicCity’ and a choice of local Easter egg hunts, there’s bound to be something for everyone. So get out there and be part of the local scene. Along with many of you, Jane’s daughter is waiting to find out which senior school she will go to in September, oh how time flies, it only seems moments since that first Mothers Day card! Wendy was playing a word game with her son the other day, and when describing ‘antique’ said ‘something old and precious’, his answer was ‘grandmothers’ which is so true, so as it’s Mothers Day this month, lets remember grandmothers too! Don’t forget you can read ‘the NOW magazines’ each month online at www.harpendennow.com Happy Easter

War and Peace Harpenden chamber choir the Lea Singers are looking forward to returning to St Nicholas Church this month for a concert with a ‘War and Peace’ theme. Haydn’s Nelson Mass is sub-titled Missa in Angustiis – mass for troubled times. It was written in 1798, when Haydn’s native Austria was at war with Napoleon’s France. While at times it captures the menace of war, it also contains moments of celebration. Days before its first performance, news reached Vienna of Admiral Nelson’s great naval victory over the French fleet in the Battle of the Nile. When Nelson visited Austria two years later, the Mass was performed especially for him and thereby acquired its more familiar nickname. The Duruflé Requiem is not without its fearful moments, but its overall atmosphere is one of peace. It was composed in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, but draws heavily on the tradition of medieval plainchant

10

and its prevailing atmosphere is one of quiet anticipation. ‘War and Peace’ marks the first collaboration between The Lea Singers and The Solis Ensemble, a dynamic new chamber orchestra founded in Oxford by Lea Singers conductor Benjamin Goodson. The Lea Singers have a strong tradition of supporting talented professional musicians early in their careers, and run a thriving interns scheme to help singers from local schools to broaden their choral experience. Saturday 16th March, 7.30pm St Nicholas Church, Harpenden adult £13, concs £12, under 18’s £5 Frances Brown on 01582 793845 or by visiting www.leasingers.co.uk The Lea Singers currently have vacancies for sopranos and tenors in particular. Please contact Karen Cardy on 01525 405 846 or at kempcardy@btinternet.com to find out more about joining the Choir.

refreshing, innovative and vibrant It’s a wonderful time of year in the interiors calendar. Light is starting to stream through our windows and brighten up our homes and thoughts switch to making the most of our longer, warmer days and all those decorative works we would like to achieve in the home. Advanced technology gives way to colour and design opportunities that are now endless. An extremely exciting time for us as all; the fabric houses unleash a wealth of wonderfully enriched palettes with infinite creative possibilities. Textile colours are more vibrant with fresh, crisp greens, sharp bright blues, hot pinks and oranges. Warmer more muted colours range from pale pastels through to cinnamons, ochres and pistachios. Fabric and wall paper designs are also taking on a fresher feel with flora and fauna prints alongside simple prints of animals, giving a light, bright Scandinavian feel. Retro is still very much in vogue with some superb abstract and stylised

designs again in both the strong and softer colour ways. To hand are an influx of digitally printed cottons, cotton sateens and linens all mixed in with traditional weaves of wools in plaids and stripes, alongside embroidered silks and linens which have been beautifully re-coloured in the hottest interior shades. If you are a fan of neutrals you will find they have been warmed up. Mushrooms, cappuccinos, cashews, seal, truffle, mole and ash sit well against each other or as a background to a few acid cushions and accessories. Concurrently our blind and shutter manufacturers have also updated with the latest shades and hues to compliment all our furnishings. Whatever your discerning style may be, there will definitely be something in our new collections to stimulate, motivate, encourage and provoke you to spring into some interior action! Gloria Baroque Masterpieces Saturday 16th March 7.30pm High Street Methodist Church Harpenden Rufus Frowde Musical Director, brings the Hardynge Choir back to the High Street Methodist Church for their Spring Concert of Baroque Masterpieces which features works by J S Bach, D Buxtehude and Vivaldi. Vivaldi composed the Gloria in Venice probably in 1715 for the choir of the Ospedale della Pieta and generously endowed orphanage for girls of illegitimate daughters of Venetian noblemen and their mistresses. It is the wonderfully sunny nature of this Gloria, that gives it such a universal appeal and is a setting from the Latin Mass in twelve cantata-like sections. Vivaldi during his life enjoyed considerable success, however when he died he was buried in a pauper’s grave in Vienna having squandered his wealth. For two centuries the Gloria lay undiscovered until the late 1920’s when was it found buried in a pile of forgotten Vivaldi manuscripts. Tickets £12, under 16’s £6, available from 0845 475 1664

come and enjoy Bach’s Matthew Passion For the first time in the UK the cello continuo will be played on the shoulder held cello or violoncello da spalla. This remarkable early cello has only recently been reconstructed and will be played by one of only three exponents of this instrument in the world, the Brussels-based virtuoso, Ryo Terakado. The relatively small number of performers (just over 30 with one player and singer per part) has many advantages over the more usual choir performance. It enables the wonderful detail of the music, especially the counterpoint, and the unusual instrumentation, to be better heard and appreciated. Most importantly, it brings the music of this highly dramatic work closer to the listener and recreates the forces which Bach had available at the first performance. This concert brings the highest standards that one might find in London to the local doorstep. Harpenden-based Charlston, who directs and organised the event, is delighted that Amici Voices have been invited back to perform in St John’s Church, which has a strong musical tradition the highest a very supportive standards that and and welcoming clergy one might find in and congregation.

The chamber choir Amici Voices will be giving a performance of Bach’s masterpiece, the Matthew Passion at 7.30pm on Thursday 21st March in St John’s Church Harpenden. Amici Voices are a choir of ten talented young singers and are among the best young voices in the UK. They are highly accomplished consort singers and vocal soloists in their own right, and will sing both the choruses and arias.

London to the local doorstep

Terence Charlston has been described as one of Britain’s leading early keyboard players and a specialist in the performance of Baroque music. As a harpsichord and organ soloist, he has toured worldwide and can be heard on over 70 commercial CDs. His pioneering work in music conservatoire education is having a wide influence on the younger generation of performers.

Tickets The performance will be sung in German with tenor adult £15 Gwilym Bowen as the Evangelist and bass student / under 18’s £5 Laurence Williams singing the part of Jesus. 01582 462024 The instrumentalists of Amici Baroque Players include some of the finest period instrument specialists in their field.
