NOW at the Local Theatres

Welcome to September We hope you’ve had a fantastic summer, and are now enjoying that lovely time of year when the nights are still warm, the sun is low in the sky and the sunsets are at their best. We’re sure you will have heard the squark of the parakeets that have taken over our gardens and parks, noisy though they are, we thought they were so bright and chirpy that we’d use them on the covers this month. If you run your own business, why not get in touch, we offer a helpful, friendly service, working hard to make the magazines the best they can be. Don’t forget the magazines are monthly so if you miss your copy you can always pick one up in town or read them on our website or social media pages.

Lipreaders Hear Better You know how as we get older we often start having difficulty reading small print, we hold the newspaper further away and squint at it? Eventually we give in and get some reading glasses. Well the same sort of thing often happens with hearing, we start to turn up the TV volume, we accuse people, especially young people, of not speaking clearly, we keep saying pardon, meetings become difficult, pubs and restaurants almost impossible. It's time for a hearing check. Hearing loss may not mean that everything gets quieter, you often lose the high frequency/pitch sounds, and as the consonants in speech are mostly high frequency, speech becomes distorted, but you can still hear a motorbike going by just as loudly as you ever did. This is why people often insist there is nothing wrong with their hearing, it’s everyone else! New research shows that untreated hearing loss can increase your chance of dementia and depression. No surprise really, as it’s easy to become isolated when you don't know what’s going on. Hearing aids have come a long way, and the new ones are great, and very discrete, but it can still be difficult to hear in noisy places. This is where lipreading comes in, we all lipread a little, but classes can help us improve. Lipreading and Managing Hearing Loss classes, to give them their full title, are huge fun, we laugh a lot. We learn about lipreading, but we also cover equipment and organisations that can help, coping strategies, how hearing works, what your audiogram shows and lot's more. My name is Molly Berry, and I started going deaf in my 30s and am now profoundly deaf, but have a brilliant cochlear implant. I now teach one of these very valuable classes at St Mary's Church, Harpenden on Tuesdays from 6.30pm - 8pm. This year's course starts on 18th September and you’re welcome to come to the first class and see if it’s for you. For more details, and to book a place email mb.lipreading@gmail.com or call / text 07741 095921

Get Back Into As part of this Hertfordshire Year of Physical Activity, September is being called ‘Get Back Into’ month encouraging you to ‘Get Back Into’ a sport or activity you once loved, whether through participation, coaching or volunteering. Hertfordshire is home to more than 2000 sports clubs, who are always looking for new members and coaches, as young instructors move on to university, and older ones retire. Herts Sports Partnership Project Officer Charlie Mann said: ‘We hope that September will provide a great entry back into sport and physical activity for many people, from all backgrounds and of all ages. I really like the idea of retuning volunteers as well - my local club is always short of helping hands.’ An ever-growing list of opportunities is available online at www.sportinherts.org.uk/gettingactive/gbi with many free of charge. And, if your club is keen to be included on the list please contact Charlie on c.mann3@herts.ac.uk or 01707 285026

WIN a Copy of ‘Defence Not Attack’ Colin Berry has been a martial arts enthusiast and personal trainer for many years, and has trained many clients including Jamie and Louise Redknapp. He has studied various martial arts systems including Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kune Do, Shaolin Kung Fu and Krav Maga. In 2005 he gained a silver medal competing in the British Championship’s Heavy Weight Sparring category and finished in the last 16 of the World Tae Kwon Do Championship’s fighting in the same weight category. What makes this even more of an achievement is that the British Championship’s was only Colin’s second try at competing at an event. He moved his attention to studying Commando Krav Maga which is a reality based self defence system and in 2007 become an instructor. Having gained so much knowledge in martial arts and reality based self defence systems, he decided to develop his own system. In 2009 the Street Defence system was born, and it has gone from strength to strength. Colin has used the system to train body guards, children and even police officers, and says the Street Defence system can be picked up by anyone, even without any previous selfdefence training. Over the last year he has been compiling a manual showing the basics in self-defence and the Street Defence system. His book ‘Defence not Attack’ The Self Defence Manual has just been published and is available to buy via Amazon and Kindle format. Giant Incinerator Planned 2 Miles from Harpenden Stop the Harpenden and Luton Incinerator (SHLI) is fighting to STOP CGEP's planning application to build a giant incinerator plant on green belt land owned by the Luton Hoo estate, situated on the Lower Harpenden Road at East Hyde. JUST 2 MILES FROM CENTRAL HARPENDEN This will have an impact on you because:  CO2 and NOx is released 24/7  HGVs will be visiting the site every 2.5 minutes for 11 hours a day  The building will be as long as Harpenden High Street, with a 100 metre high chimney  We will become the Nation’s dumping ground.  All Hertfordshire’s landfill waste would be burnt in 5 weeks, the other 47 weeks of the year it would burn waste from around and outside the UK  The River Lea and its unique chalk stream will run beneath, through and alongside sewage, landfill and pollutants before reaching your local park There are 40 schools within a 5 mile radius of the proposed incinerator, not to mention: smell, light, flora, fauna, noise.... You can help the fight by: • Joining our emailing list, visit www.shli.org.uk • Emailing and/or writing to your MP and contacting local and national officials • Telling your friends and putting it on social media • Volunteering to help
