Heron Island Verulamium Park Update from the RSPB There were 12 active nests this year with around 30 young herons fledging. There have also been two nests of Little Egrets on the island; one with two young and the other with three. Barry Trevis, local Ornithologist has monitored the herons on the island since 1996 and has ringed many of the Grey Heron chicks over the years. Last June he was delighted to find that Little Egrets had started breeding there too. As a British Trust for Ornithology licenced bird-ringer, he fitted colour-rings on the Egret chicks’ legs last year and one of those was observed regularly at Tring Reservoirs throughout the Autumn. This year the five young have also been colour -ringed and local birdwatchers have been asked to look out for them.

Kimpton Horse Show Sunday 26th July Now in its 71st year the Kimpton Horse Show has a jam-packed schedule of showing, show jumping, gymkhana, fancy dress, working hunter classes and much more! Whether you’re planning to compete or just enjoy the atmosphere, join us for some fun and friendly competition, all to raise funds for causes benefiting the lives of local people. This was the initial vision of the Show’s founder, Geoff Harding. Last year over £4k was raised for charities including Macmillan Nurses and Kimpton Rovers Football Club. And the spirit of the show has never been lost, to provide fun for all, from the scruffiest little pony to the most smartly turned out show horse! Mr Harding realised, towards the end of World War II with the return of peace, that Kimpton needed a Village Hall as a social centre. He became the first contributor to fund this project and at a public meeting it was decided to go ahead with the scheme. To increase funds, the first Gymkhana, for which Mr Harding was almost wholly responsible, was held on a modest scale in April 1944. After this initial success, the annual show has grown and prospered, now taking place each year on the last Sunday in July. Geoff Harding remembers working on the gate at that first show during a freezing snow shower, but the British spirit was undaunted. The horses had names like ‘Tuppence’ ‘Betsy’ and ‘Tinker’. The games, Posting the Letter, Bending, and Musical Chairs, were great fun and the lucky numbered programmes cost 6d, with a prize worth £1 to the fortunate winner. The Viscountess Hampden presented the prizes at this, the first social event to take place in the village for some considerable time. It’s interesting to picture those baggy jodphured children parading around the same field as today’s competitors and to contrast those uncertain times with today’s relative ease. A perfect day out for all the family. www.kimptonhorseshow.co.uk

Strawberry Shortcake Tarts
225g self-raising flour 1tsp baking powder 75g butter, chilled and diced 50g caster sugar 1 medium egg, beaten 2-3 tbsp milk For the Pastry Cream and Topping 2 medium eggs 25g plain flour 50g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml milk 150ml double cream 175g strawberries 5ml lemon juice 1 tbsp icing sugar Ready in 45 mins Make the most of sweet and juicy British strawberries with these divine fruit tarts. If you don’t have time to make the pastry cream then use fresh ready-made custard or just top with sweetened whipped cream. Preheat the oven to 190C, fan 170C, Gas 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Lightly butter 6 x 8cm loose-based fluted tartlet tins. Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour to make fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, egg and enough milk to make a soft dough.
32
Divide the dough into six equal pieces and, using floured hands, press each piece of dough into the base and up the sides of a tartlet tin. Place the tins on the hot baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool in the tins for 15 minutes then turn out and leave to cool completely. To make the pastry cream, beat together the eggs, flour, caster sugar and vanilla extract. Pour the milk into a small pan and heat the milk to almost boiling point then whisk into the egg mixture. Return the mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring all the time, until thickened. Cover the surface with greaseproof paper and leave to cool completely. Whip the cream until softly peaking and fold into the pastry cream. Puree half the strawberries by pushing through a fine-holed sieve. Stir in the lemon juice and icing sugar. Slice the rest of the strawberries. Spoon the pastry cream on top of the shortcakes. Top with the sliced strawberries and spoon over the puree. Serve within 2-3 hours. Tip - The tart bases can be made and stored unfilled in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
