Deliciousandreal - something simple Lemon Crunch Yogurt A healthy breakfast that is simple enough for the kids to prepare for Mother’s Day! To make it even better add fresh berries, they make an excellent addition to this delicious morning treat. Bowl of full fat Greek yogurt A few almonds Sprinkling of chia seeds A dollop of lemon curd Generous spoonful of granola Spoon the Greek yogurt into a bowl, arrange the other ingredients on top. If you have any fresh fruit (blueberries work well) add them too.
Homemade Fish Fingers They other day, I got home from work at 3pm and by 3:15 I had these fish fingers ready to go into the oven. It’s all about preparation and with this recipe it was the breadcrumbs; I save crusts from my loaves of bread, blitz them in a food processor and pop them in the freezer, ready for when I need them. We like them served in a toasted pitta bread with salad – our version of a posh fish finger sandwich! A delicious, easy and nutritious home-cooked dinner for the kids. 1 large salmon fillet (split lengthways and skin removed…if you leave the skin on and don’t breadcrumb it they are just as good!) Mayonnaise Handful of breadcrumbs Preheat the oven to 180°C Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the salmon fillets Roll them in the breadcrumbs until covered Place on a baking tray and cook for 10-15 minutes
Rock Cakes - Just Like Mum Makes These remind me of being a child, I remember making them with my mum. Such a delightful and easy, treat for children…and adults! I’ve made a few changes to my mum’s recipe - I’ve added coconut and apricots to the sultanas and used a light muscovado for an extra treacly flavour. Soft, sweet and delicious. 100g butter (cut into chunks and softened) 40g apricots 225g self raising flour 20g desiccated coconut 1 tsp cinnamon 1 egg (beaten) 75g soft muscovado sugar Splash of milk 60g sultanas Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray Put the butter in a bowl, add the flour and cinnamon Rub the butter and flour together, with your fingers, until it resembles breadcrumbs Add the sugar, fruit, coconut and egg and stir with a spoon Add a little milk to bring the mixture together Use an ice-cream scoop (it’s the perfect size) to put mounds of the mixture onto the baking tray Bake for about 15 minutes or until golden brown Allow to cool…then enjoy! St Albans Bowling Club is the oldest bowls club in St Albans, founded in 1903, and located in the delightful setting of Clarence Park. It has historical links with Samuel Ryder, who bequeathed a silver cup to the Club long before he discovered golf. There is a current mixed membership of over 100, and the Club is always eager to welcome new members. Bowls is a sport for all ages, genders and abilities. It’s gaining in popularity as it is inexpensive and easy to learn, and is no longer perceived as an older persons sport. Free coaching is available at the Club for prospective members with all equipment provided. There is an Open Day on Sunday 23rd April when all those keen to know more about the Club and the sport are warmly invited to attend. Sessions will run between 11am - 1pm and 2pm - 4pm. The summer season runs from April to September and throughout this period both single gender and mixed matches are played. These range from internal competitions within the Club, to representative matches against other clubs in Hertfordshire and competitions at county and district level. For those who prefer less competitive matches, there are informal sessions called “roll-ups” to be enjoyed during the week. In addition to actively participating in the sport, the Club prides itself on its sociable atmosphere, and a number of events are arranged during the season and through the winter months in its licensed clubhouse. Kathy Witchard Chiropodist/Podiatrist Kathy achieved her state registered qualification back in 1986 and worked in NHS hospitals in North London to gain experience. She then moved on to become a senior manager in the NHS chiropody department in St Albans. She specialised in surgical procedures and at the same time branched out into private practice, which included the start of a 25 year relationship working from Davenport House doctor’s surgery in Harpenden. She said: “I can’t believe where the years have gone. I have always enjoyed a great relationship with the staff and doctors there. Although many of my patients are private referrals from the GPs, the majority are simply members of the public who choose to come to the surgery for assessment and treatment.” Kathy’s typical workload would includes ingrowing toenails, corns, calluses and a broad spectrum of foot related issues. She says: “Whilst the majority of my patients are inevitably elderly – I have worked with Age Concern for more than 20 years - I also get great satisfaction from working with my special-needs clients.” Kathy’s home visits enable her less mobile patients to be seen in the comfort of their own surroundings. She covers St Albans, Harpenden and most of the surround areas (Park Street, London Colney, Wheathampstead and Redbourn). So what advice can Kathy offer following three decades in her profession? “There are really only two main points. First, if you become aware of an issue, don’t put it off. It is very unlikely to get better by itself. A relatively small cost can relieve pain and anxiety. “Secondly – always see a properly qualified health professional. Look out for the ‘HCPC’ qualification.”

John is a 22 year old artist who mainly works in alkyd oil and acrylic paint. It can take him weeks to paint a single frame from a film; he hopes his paintings not only create a sensation for the viewer, but also serve as a testament to the effort and energy that so many people from so many disciplines put into creating a film - from the Casting Director to the Catering Department and everyone in between working together. Do Something for Charity Please Help our Portly Ponies Dogs and Daffs Day 26th March
Red Nose Day 24th March
Dawn and Darragh are the latest recruits to the Digswell Place Group Riding for the Disabled Association. These Highland Ponies are perfect companions for riders with disabilities as they give a solid ride with no fuss. To make the most of their skills both Dawn and Darragh need bespoke saddles to accommodate their wide girth. The saddles cost £1500 each, a small price for the amount of enjoyment and confidence they will bring their riders once they have completed their training. Chairman of the Digswell Place Group RDA, Caroline MacFarlane said: “These two ponies were chosen because of their temperament and their ability to instill confidence in the most disabled of riders. They are gentle and calm and because of their sturdiness, they can carry a lot of weight too. They are already proving popular with the volunteers.” The Digswell Place Group RDA has teamed up with the Stable Yard at Hatfield House to hold their third Dogs and Daffs Day to raise the much needed funds for the saddles. Last year’s event raised £4,500 which was used to build a new field shelter at the stables. During the day walkers can enjoy Hatfield Park exclusively for a small donation to the charity and dog lovers can enter a fun dog show, with a category just for mums, as the event falls on Mother’s Day! There will also be dog displays and scurrying to take part in - again for a small donation to the charity. www.hatfield-house.co.uk

There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden. Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and can even have pretty flowers - and now is an ideal time to plant one. First, prepare the area by forking the soil thoroughly and remove large stones, debris and weeds. This helps break up any compaction and aerates the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. Fork in well-rotted garden compost or manure if the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, and at the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. Don’t plant right up against a fence, as the plants won’t grow well. At this time of year you can create a hedge effectively using ‘bareroot’ plants, but at any other time you’ll need container-grown plants. If using pot-grown plants, water them thoroughly and carefully remove each plant from its pot. If the roots are tightly packed, tease them out before planting. If you’re using bare-root plants, plant them immediately. It’s essential to space the plants correctly, to achieve the desired effect and ensure they establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil at the same depth as it was in the pot; for bare-root plants only the roots should be beneath the soil. Firm the soil around each plant so that it’s in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants should be spaced about 30-45cm apart. For a thicker hedge, plant two parallel rows, each with a 45cm spacing between the plants, so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and allow the plants to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants use bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. Keep it well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants: Yew - a formal, evergreen hedge Thuja - a stunning conifer hedge for year round colour. Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good effect for much of the year. Both purple and green-leafed forms. Hornbeam - great as a neatly clipped hedge, but more prone to mildew than beech. Cypress – excellent if kept well clipped and cut back regularly. Pyracantha - spiny evergreen with pretty creamy-white flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. Privet - the classic town hedge. Euonymus - evergreen, some variegated green and cream, others green and yellow. Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny, good for wildlife. Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, with pretty white flowers followed by sloes – but can easily get too vigorous! by Pippa Greenwood
