WIND INDIGO DYE -MICRO ARCHITECTURE STUDIO 7 . 1:1 Installation 2018/ Team work Advisor: Huai -Wen Chang
Wind Analysis The analysis shows that the wind in Hsinchu is constantly blowing in different directions, especially from the North-East. To access the wind from different directions, the microarchitecture should be designed into a radial form.

To make the invisible wind into a physical movement, we made a wind panel as a unit to study how to perform wind’s action. The diagram shows that the wind panel unit, which drives the movement of the drip tube, makes the dripping of dye turn into different patterns due to the different wind force.

The base unit is first placed on the ground, and after adjusting the level, the installation of temporary scaffoldings can be started.
Raise the wind ring unit (wood structure) and make it attached to the base.
The dyeing cylinder units are bound together with the steel rod on the top. Inserted the water pipe into the cylinder to connect it with the pump.
Put the top at the joint part of the dyeing cylinder bracket and the top wooden structure.
The wind panel units are the last added. They are installed from the inside to the outside.

Temporary scaffoldings can support load-bearing and prevent the structure from collapse. And fix bolts at the joint part.
Finally, the temporary scaffoldings could be removed after the steel cable is fixed.
Drawings Wind and Indigo Dye The wind is an invisible presence. It always seems to be around. But it has a far relationship between our culture and life. Blue dye is an old Hakka art that has gradually disappeared. The time-consuming and complex but elegant dyeing methods are becoming less known... Hsinchu is the settlement cluster of Hakka culture, and it is also a windy city that blows strong winds because of its special landscape. We want to build a micro-architecture that has such special humanities with natural factors and revives blue dye with the wind.

Riverside Gallery To reconnect tourists’ experiences of history and culture, our team provide a plan: Riverside Gallery as our team strategy. The path goes through 3 sites and attractions with historical and cultural perspective. We could experience the story of Tamsui while we follow the path of Riverside Gallery. Three sites are designed into three different chapters that allow people to experience Tamsui in views of history, surrounding environment, and cultural customs individually; and connect the upper part of the slope with the busy part below. Tamsui City Located in the northwestern part of Taiwan, Tamsui once became an important port for ships in northern Taiwan in the 16th century, which led to its prosperity and development, and was the first to contact Western culture.Tamsui absorbs culture of all times and has become an intersection of nationality and history with old and new traits. However, as an one day tour attraction, old rugged terrain, narrow lanes on the steep slope cut off the connection with the busy old streests and the river below. That makes it difficult for tourists to go up and discover the valuable history and culture of Tamsui in addition to the beautiful scenery of Tamsui river.

Kangaroo Island & Wildlives The site of the tower is in the Flinders Chase National Park. It is located at the south western part of Kangaroo Island. The national park is an important ecosystem supporting both flora and fauna of the island. With the forestry lands surrounding the national park, together they are home to many wildlife of the island. In the event of recent bushfire, it became a great challenge for the sustainabilty of the island’s wildlife. Moreover, the precipitation of this area is relatively higher than the rest of Kangaroo Island. Hence the site offers natural advantage on site to set up a hub to help the regeneration of wildlife affected by the fire. “Individual animals might survive, but when their habitat is gone. It does not matter,” Saunders said. “they will die anyway.” Animals that survive may struggle to find food in an ashen landscape devoid of plants that provide nutrients or shelter. Without trees to nest in, birds may fail to breed. Prey, including insects, may be scarce.

Competition work 2020 / Team work Contrbution: research, concept development, design, drawings About 30 percent of the population of a subspecies of the glossy black cockatoo, which is essentially extinct on the mainland and numbered about 500 on the island, is also gone, Mr. Dunlop said. Thirty to 40 percent of the island’s kangaroos are believed to have died, as well as a third of its 50,000 koalas.
Sanctuary for wildlife The tower, consisted of landscape, waterfall, and permeable facade, seeks to provides a haven for the wildlife affected by the fire while equiped with ways to stand against the wild fire with its water system. The ground of the tower is intergrated with landscape features to provide a continuation of natural canopies under the tower, which allow animals to roam the grounds as a part of nature.During a bushfire, animals can be brought into the tower and seek safety in respective habitual platforms. The hierachy of the tower is based on the environment in which the wildlife requires to regenerate. The top is a nursery for regrowing important burnt flora, especially the ones which are important habitats for animals. Next is facility to care for burnt animals, and below that are the recovery habitat for wildlife.

Conservation towers are not a solution to wildfires in Australia, but rather exist as a means of preventing fires and providing rapid recovery after a fire. Before the fire, the conservation tower is usually used as a general habitat for planting plants for animals. At the same time, the water circulation system keeps the forest near the tower at a stable humidity to prevent the fire. After the fire came, it was used as a rehabilitation site for surviving animals.
Botany + Research + Animal critical care unit The upper volumes of the tower are greenhouses and animal critical care units. The implementation of these spaces provides good conditions for plantations of Botany, recovery of the injured animals and regeneration of endangered animals. PLAN +320M
Water system The flow of water throughout the tower ecosystem acts as a kind of active water cooling system for the surrounding land. Splashes from the waterfalls create water vapors and mists which could regulate the humidity and temperature of the microclimate around the tower, especially during the arid summer. PLAN +125M
Ecosystem + Observatory The tower consists of vertical stories and integrates the water system, creating different sorts of wild animal conservation and plantation. The platforms of plants provide different animals’ habitats. Visitors can have close observation of wild animals in these spaces.
Visitor Center + Wild Animal Intake The ramp leads to the entrance of the building, also, creating a space as wild animals intake when the fire comes. The landscape above the visitor center provides a natural environment for wild animals to live in.

4-1.Complementary This picture consists of only three colors, orange, white, and blue. The combination of these three colors creates a perfect balance in this picture and gives people strong feelings. To be more specific, it is because of the blue sky, which plays the role of complementary, lights up the picture so the picture can be so impressive. The drawing above is the notation of the design. The linearity part of red represents lights from the external environment.
These lights will constantly change according to time. I hope to create a space as a receiver. When these lights from the external environment change, the vibe of the space will also, be changed.

Feeling of Speed/Colors In order to make the elements on the site switch and change in my space to produce different effects, I began to observe the natural skylight and trains which pass every 15 minutes. I recorded the colors they produced and studied the distance that the color of the train can be reflected in the site under the sunlight as well as how long time lasted through the site. Then I did some small experiments to study the refraction and reflection of light.

Light & Emotion This project is an experiment about how spatial experiences are able to make people feel interesting and emotionally rich in space, such as constant switching between natural light and artificial light from the external environment. The site is originally a small park located next to the railway, south of Hsinchu Railway Station. In addition to the natural elements, there are many elements that are constantly changing and existing programs. Like groups of old people chatting, children's playground, railways, scooter’s taillights in the night, a stage for festivals, the shade of trees, and so on. These elements are related to time with regular frequency.

Playground of Light
Based on the characteristics of this site, I created many different spaces in the park. These spaces will exhibit different spatial atmospheres at different times to guide users who appear during this period to use the space in the park. Or, some spaces only generate the atmosphere of the space that belongs to that period during a certain period. As different space atmospheres are displayed at different times, the use of space has also changed.
Behind the stage is the train aisle, which reflects the train on the wall of the aluminum sheet when the train passes. The beveled wall allows the person walking on it to have the illusion that many trains pass at the same time. These walls can also change the angle and can change the amount of light in response to the needs of the stage performance.

The middle volume is a train cabin, the children's playground. Children who play in the afternoon after school will perceive light reflected by the train in the space. There will be rich color changes in the space according to the trains. The color receiver is also a slide, enhancing the light reflection from the train's color and filling the space with lights. The nets inside the cabin are also made of the colored material. It also reflects the color in the space.

The site is roughly divided into three parts from west to east, which are the community house, children's playground, performance space, and multi-purpose square. The spatial atmosphere, program, and scope of these spaces are constantly changing as time and the surrounding environment change. Some changes are obvious, while others are more suggestive.

Neishi station is in Pingdong, the south of Taiwan. Only one train will stop here every day. As a result, less than one person is getting on and off every day on average. Neishi station seems to have nothing to do with time, speed, and efficiency like any other station.

Hengchun Sightseeing Railway Project
My thesis design is a reflection of monotonous life under a fast-moving modern society. By integrating the feeling of speed and time elapsing people will perceive at different heights and distances on the horizontal site, the vertical tower form of the transit station will make people rethink the question, "How do we experience time?" and have an opportunity to get rid of the monotony of life.
With the implementation of the Hengchun Sightseeing Railway Project, Neishi Station will become a transfer station for the railway, sightseeing train, and bus in 2024. It will be known as a transit point across Taiwan for passengers who want to go to Kenting.
As a container for change of external environmental, the architecture makes time perceivable. As time goes by, the atmosphere of the space will change the way we understand the space.
I hope that the new transfer station proposal can provide people with opportunities to get rid of inertial life. People can get involved in the slow pace of Neishi and choose to experience travel and life in different ways while they are waiting for trains rather than ignoring the beautiful things around them when they pass by in a rush.

In modern society, people's lives are restrained by families, friends, and work. People live monotony life subjects to time. People are used to finishing tasks quickly, fulfilling their free time, replying, and receiving information immediately. People nowadays often overlook the good things in life.

Because of Hengchun Sightseeing Railway Project, the volume of the station building will become much bigger than now anyway. I try to make the station building taller instead so that the tower could be a vertical container that integrates different kinds of speed on the field. If the tower becomes taller, it could create a dialogue with the platform. I hope that the passengers’ feeling of different distance and different heights to the tower could provoke passengers’ curiosity about the tower and the external environment during the transfer. Besides, it creates opportunities for passengers to get out of monotonous life.

he new design redefines spaces on people's path up to the top of the tower with a specific code; T stands for timing, M for minutes, and H for hours. Different codes represent specific moments or durations in which people experience these spatial experiences caused by light, sound, and the speed of the external environment. With these experience, people will feel different ways that time flies during climbing and begin a dialogue with the external environment around them.

While the elevator rises, the distance between the passenger and the sky is getting closer. In the closed volume, the elevator serves as a light well which produces different light effects in the tower while people are using the elevator.

Sunlight shines through the translucent elevator shaft and creates different light effect during the daytime, intriguing people to climb up to upstairs of the tower.
There is only 200 meters from the station to the beautiful beach of Taiwan Strait. But people would never know it if they don't leave the station when they transit. The seaview library allows people to discover beautiful scenery outside the station.
Eating a bowl of shaved ice along with the scenery of sunset slowly falling into the beautiful Taiwan Strait is such an enjoyment.
The implementation of the transfer station while brings tourists to the Neishi, also destroys the originally slow and lonely pace. When society continues to develop, people become numb under the chase of time. In a fast-moving life, people gradually forget "How do we experience time? The new design of the transfer station proposes the possibility of redefining programs with time for the reconstruction of the station. The transfer station integrates speeds people would perceive at different heights and distances on the site with the form of a tower. The tower consists of the space with programs that intersect into a path to the top. People would slowly establish a dialogue with the external environment and time to extend people's perception of time and speed as they climb up through space and activities (auditorium, seaview library, swimming pool, mango shaved ice shop, and capsule hotels).

The Stargazing Platform located at the topest place of the tower allows people to look up the starry sky of southern Taiwan and hear the chirping of cicadas. People will find the enjoyment they lost from their life.

Loop of playground The original concept of former colleagues designed for kindergarten is derived from the continuous path of the Mรถbius strip, a surface with only one side and only one boundary curve. The form of kindergarten is a closed loop of slope that starts from the ground floor, providing children safe spaces without height differences to play and run. There are 18 classrooms, 4 special classrooms, and an auditorium placed on the slope.
