Cultural Revival of Naoge

Academic Architecture Design Project Group Partner: Zhou Ti Instructor: Xv Whenzhao(wenzhao@alumni.upenn.edu) Role: Team Leader Site: Hohhot, Inner Mongolia Time: Summer July ,2020 Naoge museum is designed to retain the traditional naoge performance, which is about to be lost. At the same time, this form of performance has a high demand for space. Therefore, in the design, I combine function and streamline to match the performance of this art form. The architectural conception also comes from the arch elements commonly used in local historical buildings

Site Analysis

Cultural Heritage Analysis

The site is located in an industrial park in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. At the same time, the park passes through the important node of Dangdang car. On the streamline of this Dangdang car, there are many famous local historical cultures. Therefore, I intend to design a museum in this site to enrich the streamline.

The above picture shows the unique historical and cultural scenic spots. One of the unique Chinese cultural heritage is naoge.Naoge is a unique form of local art performance. People express their joy in their hearts by performing art in a way of overlapping. Many ancient buildings around the site have arch elements.

Activated Space under Viaduct Academic Architecture and Urban Design Project Group Partner: Chen Yuwei Instructor: Lin Lifeng(lin@lin.archi) Role: Team Leader Site: Xisan village,Guangzhou Time: Winter November,2019 Xisan village is a city village in Guangzhou. The separation between the village and the city is serious. In order to activate the village, we take the space under the viaduct as the starting point, and at the same time, the buildings on both sides of the bridge are reconstructed. It can not only attract people from outside to come here, but also it can drive the development of the village.

Site Analysis

Site Status Quo The project is located in the xisan village of Guangzhou, which is a village in the city. The area is located in the central area of the city, but it is surrounded by modern highrise buildings, so it is impossible to find the failure situation through the urban interface. Dongsha bridge is the only medium in the village to communicate with the outside world, and the space under the bridge is very rich and unused. The viaduct runs through the village to the river, which is a good medium to attract people.

6 Current situation in the village

The current situation of the site is dilapidated, surrounded by high-rise buildings, and there is a serious class gap. The viaduct became the medium of communication between the village and the outside world.

Analysis of Crowd Behavior (9.AM---12.PM) The starting point of the site is a city park with some restaurants and retail shops inside

As a link, the viaduct connects the river channel and the riverside.

Control Line Analysis

The site have regular vertical axis relationship, which has communication with the linear relationship of viaduct

Traffic Analysis

The traffic in the site is not convenient, people mainly travel by walking

It can be seen from the figure that if the space under the viaduct is utilized and activated, tourists from the riverside can be attracted to Xisan village, thus driving the economy. The picture analyzes the time nodes that different groups of people may appear in the site, and combined with the surrounding elements, discusses the various possibilities of different areas under the bridge space

In my design, I regard the residential buildings around the village as points, and use lines to connect the points to form a multi-level space experience. At the same time, large-scale activity areas are is set up at the starting point and end point of the line , and a temporary activity area is set up in the middle of the village

Starting from the types of space under the bridge, this picture discusses the different space types under the viaduct. We conclude that transition space and boundary space are our main research objects. At the same time, roof space is a good interactive space, which also provides the possibility for many space types.

Structure and Space Analysis As my exploration of fluidity proceeded, I realized that spatial fluidity can be crafted from various aspects and scales. In this project, I not only uses the tactics applied in previous projects – the utilization of circulation and integration of landscape, but more importantly, I analyzed and constructed the space structural pattern of fluid space in terms of nodes, lines, and surfaces. The nodes in fluid space are in a movement that is loaded by the city, the centralization of activities proves the importance of nodes in fluid space, and the relationship among spaces decides the distance among nodes of fluid spaces.

It is a highly isolated village where the deteriorating environments are hardly visible when walking along its border to the city. The only element that creates connectivity to the outside is the Dongsha Overpass. Therefore, I design three layers of pedestrian systems along the Z-axis under the bridge; each layer has different features. Featuring the existing condition and elements, this design reinforces the existing texture of the village and creates fluidity in the horizontal direction. Three nodes are defined along the corridor, and connectivity is emphasized: thus, providing an immersive visiting experience. Both sides of the village and the rooftops are visible while people are walking on the corridors. A larger scale of the pedestrian system is placed under the overpass; space extends toward various directions; all of the constructs seem to be floating; fluidity is thus crafted, through the conversation of the spaces and their surrounding urban contexts.

Renderings Activity space in the park

Open activities can be set up in the xisan village. At the same time, people can also reach the pedestrian corridor system through large steps.

Open artist studio

On the top of the corridor system, there is some artist's studios. The artist's studio adopts relatively open panels, which on the one hand retains the privacy it should have, and at the same time, integrates with the corridor space.

Assembly square

In the center of the pedestrian corridor system and in the middle of Xisan village, a distribution area is set up in the village. People can hold temporary activities and sell goods here.

Entrance square

Flexible display and sale areas are set up in the entrance area of the park, and entertainment facilities are arranged on both sides of the corridor system to create an entertainment and leisure atmosphere.

Silence in the Forest Academic Architecture Design Project

Individual Instructor: Su Jianming(jianmingsu@hfut.edu.cn) Site:Mothe Chandeniers, France Time:Spring May,2019 In the project, the site is located in a village in the south of France with a long history around it. In order to make full use of the forest, the organizer asked to design a tree house . Therefore, I took into account the building problems in the design, so I planned to design in a modular way. Through the combination of small-scale modules, rich internal space changes can be formed. At the same time, people can feel the peace of nature in the tree house

Site Analysis

Space Generation

The destination is a combination of small islands divided by creeks and rivers that make the agricultural center of France lush and luxuriant. The essence of Vibrac lies in its waters.

Vibrac is the perfect destination for hikers, bikers and kayak enthusiasts. It is fascinating from a paleontology perspective too. In fact, it holds numerous fossils of mastodons that stepped on its ground millions years ago

This areas are studded with majestic and ancient trees, small groups of houses and solitary estates.

Site Status Quo

Ruins of ancient castle

There are obvious height difference changes inside the site, including high castle ruins, low villages, dense trees and mild rivers. The elements are very nature and beautiful.

Standardized Unit

Modular Tree House Device

In order to meet the requirements of developers, set up a tree house building that can be widely used. In the second design, we decided to design the standard unit in the form of modularization, and formed different tree house buildings through different combinations of modular units.

Creative Fashion Hub Academic Architecture and Urban Design Project Individual Instructor: Xv Whenzhao(wenzhao@alumni.upenn.edu) Site:Centergross ,Italy Time:Autumn September,2019 The site of the project is located in centrergross, Italy. The park is the largest fashion clothing wholesale factory in the world. I design a fashion center at the core of the park, as the heart of the whole park, to give full play to the sense of fashion. The buildings in the park are mainly bungalows, so I want to break this kind of order in the design. A combination of fold line buildings is used to deal with the site.People can fully enjoy the fun of fashion in architecture.

Site Mapping

Site Analysis

Centergross in an authentic trade city, in which professional services such as the nursery, banks, post office, logistics, consultancies and eateries all contribute to giving an added value to the companies that belong to it and are essential for welcoming and accompanying the visitors who pass whole days at the centre doing research, discovering the latest sector.

My target is to transform it to a worldwide side fashion center and face the challenge of onlineshopping mode. By recreating the site, I give centergross a new birth, innovations and making important purchases.

At the beginning of the design, I analyzed the internal factors of the site, including the current situation of the surrounding environment, the analysis of the site vehicle lines, the analysis of the greening inside the park, and the analysis of the existing brand and functional elements in the park.

Derivation of People Demand and Activity Relationship

Coping Strategies

According to the unique landscape elements of the park itself, landscape nodes are placed at the same time, which makes the perfect combination of inside and outside the site

The pedestrian corridor system is set in the interior of the site, which is combined with the building high points and landscape nodes to increase the

Four functional blocks are set up in the site, which are experience area, interaction area and fashion school and office.

Open square is set at the start of the park, fashion exhibitions can be held at the same time, curved building groups are set up inside the site, and the buildings are combined with corridors to enrich people's experience

Analysis of Circulation and Activity

Considering different behavior needs of different groups, different behavioral needs are divided in design, and the frequency of different people in different building sites is analyzed.

Roof utilization Making full use of the corridor system, people can get to the roof of the building through the corridor, and increase the experience of the building

Landscape setting In the process of walking outside the building, people will pass through the enclosed landscape area, and the sense of space experience will change and the interest will increase

Spatial transformation The roof area of another block can be reached from one block, and the spaces are connected and communicated with each other.

Entrance design Open square is set in the entrance area of the park, combined with fashion elements, to meet the functional requirements of outdoor show, attract people and meet the function well

Function Analysis

A linear fashion industry center is set up in the cengtergross center, which is divided into four regions according to its functions, namely exhibition, interaction, fashion school and office. The exhibition space and experience area are set up in the open area of the park to enrich people's experience. Fashion schools are set up in the rear of the buildings to meet the needs of the surrounding people for fashion. Office is set at the end of the buildings to meet the use needs of management and R & D personnel.
