Who Are We?

International Credibility

The IMRF is the international charity focussed on preventing loss of life in the world’s waters.

As the representative body of the world’s maritime rescue services, the IMRF holds consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) the United Nations’ specialised inter-governmental agency for maritime affairs.

We serve and support our members and the maritime SAR community and help improve maritime SAR development by: • Creating effective partnerships; • Facilitating cooperation & collaboration; • Coordinating international projects; • Researching existing and emerging challenges; • Providing forums for open exchange of knowledge and information; • Representing & advocating internationally. IMRF Members come from across the maritime SAR spectrum, both governmental and non-governmental organisations. These organisations include Rescue Coordination Centres, Coast Guards, Lifeboat Services, Life Saving Groups, Maritime Administrations, Suppliers to the sector, and Technology and Communication Developers. We welcome and work with all organisations that share our humanitarian goal of preventing loss of life in the world’s waters.

We work at the IMO to encourage practical regulation that does not impose unreasonable cost on industry, States or maritime SAR services, but will improve safety and SAR; and to improve the SAR guidance available at the global level, including the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual. The IMRF is the only organisation at the IMO solely focussed on improving maritime search and rescue. The IMRF also works closely with IMO member States and the IMO secretariat to complete the Global SAR Plan, the essential network of facilities for maritime SAR coordination across the world, so as to provide a consistency of communication and response. To date, we have established regional groups working to this end in South America, North West and West Africa, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

What Are We Doing?

Over 90 Years of Achievement

The IMRF exists to prevent loss of life, to promote safety and to provide relief from disaster at sea and on inland waters throughout the world by:

Since our foundation in 1924 as the International Lifeboat Federation (ILF), our member organisations have worked in unity to overcome many common challenges, openly sharing their ideas, developments and experiences for the benefit of all.

• Promoting cooperation, exchange of information, research and development, advice and consultancy between maritime search and rescue services of the world; • Encouraging and promoting the formation and development of maritime search and rescue services throughout the world; and • The promotion of public education and awareness regarding water safety. The IMRF has projects that will improve safety and rescue response for all those heading out on the water.

Much of the lifesaving technology in common use today is as a direct result of this international cooperation. Our members have also provided practical start-up assistance and encouragement to newly-established and developing SAR organisations, which struggle to provide life-saving services in the world’s poorer regions.

Facing Common Challenges Together… Every year, it is estimated, more than 372,000 lives are lost to the world’s waters.

Sharing Sharing valuable experience, best practices, new ideas and lessons learned.

In the Developed World In most developed countries, thanks to the efforts of our member organisations, those who get into trouble on the water can depend on timely and effective maritime rescue services.

Improving Pooling our experience and resources in cost-effective common projects. Developing new practices, technologies and systems for the benefit of all.

Our members save thousands of lives each year. This humanitarian service is provided free of charge, in many cases by committed volunteers. Working together through the IMRF our Members combine their strengths to address common challenges. “Together we are stronger”

In the Developing World Unfortunately, water users in many developing regions do not yet have safety and emergency services available to them. They depend heavily on their waters for food and transportation, and risk their lives every day just to survive.

Representing Raising general awareness of maritime safety. Being the independent voice of the world’s maritime emergency services.

Improvements in maritime safety can best be brought about if other social priorities (as expressed in the UN’s Millennium Goals) are also properly addressed. Working directly with the local community and with other development partners, we seek to prevent further tragic losses of life and to make real and lasting changes.

Supporting Establishing community-centred safety and emergency response units. Helping them to become operationally effective, self-reliant and selfsustaining.

Responding Preparing for large scale disasters and global threats. Organising coordinated international response to large scale emergencies. International Maritime Rescue Federation | 5

We Are an Accredited International Charity To undertake this work the IMRF needs to continue to build a membership and financial supporter base that will allow us to deliver on our commitment to reduce the loss of life in the world’s waters. The value of the work we are doing is measured by improving maritime SAR capability around the world. Preventing loss of life in the world’s waters is why we exist. We are making significant progress – but can do nothing without our members and supporters. We encourage you to get involved.
