On 2 July 2019, a small strip of northern Chile will witness a rare and incredible phenomenon: a total solar eclipse. At about 4 o’clock in the afternoon, the moon will pass between the sun and earth, sliding across the sun’s surface to plunge the area into a twilight darkness for 2 minutes and 34 seconds in a spectacular display. We’ll be watching the action from Chile’s dramatic Elqui Valley, an area that is not only a famous wine region (you can watch with a glass of wine in hand!) but also one of the world’s premier spots for star-gazing and hosts many international observatories. What better place to observe this spectacular sight!
DR STUART CLARK PHD Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society Astronomy journalist and author Dr Stuart Clark has devoted his career to teaching others about the infinite wonders of the universe. As he spends his time writing books and articles that make the complex and fascinating world of astronomy more accessible, we couldn’t resist asking Stuart back to work with us for a second time. Back in 2009 he led our China Eclipse tour to great acclaim, wowing the crowds with his knowledge and enthusiasm.
