Beaches of southern India

from across India to the ghats lining the banks, to wash away their sins and cremate their loved ones in the sacred waters. If you’re lucky you may witness the Puja ceremony of Ganga Aarti. SOUTHERN INDIA The south is India as you've always imagined it – exotic, colourful, mysterious, spiritual and charismatic. It is home to pristine backwaters, sleepy fishing villages and tropical beaches, and offers up spectacular cuisine and the friendliest of people. It is very different from the north, providing stark contrasts between spices, food, cultures and climate.

Southern India’s long, wide beaches fringed with palm trees are the perfect place to relax and unwind after your tour of India. With so much to explore, make 2016 the year you visit incredible India.

Visit the city of Mumbai and explore the city that was once the gateway of India. Sadhus, Varanasi

NORTHERN INDIA This part of India has all varieties of geography, from the regal mountain ranges to the sandy plains that stretch for miles and the dense green forests to the open expanses of snow. Rising to about 1,200 metres, parts of northern India sit within the foothills of the mighty Himalayan Mountains. Visit the capital of India, Delhi. The city is split into two areas: Old Delhi and New Delhi. In Old Delhi you will find the old city wall and a maze of small alleyways lined with legendary bazaars whose goods spill out onto the pavements. New Delhi is characterised by the grandeur of 19th century buildings and wide, tree-lined boulevards.

Cruise on a converted rice barge, also known as a 'kettuvallam', along the palm-fringed waterways of Kerala for an unforgettable experience, passing ancient Chinese fishing nets, lush rice paddies, local villages, temples and coconut groves. Journey to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ellora Caves, carved into the side of a basaltic hill. They comprise 34 monasteries and temples representing Buddhist, Hindu and Jain art and date back to the 4th and 5th centuries AD.

Magic mornings: Angkor and Halong Bay By Adam Ford Asia is a busy place so finding a little ‘me time’ can be tricky. But on a recent visit to Cambodia and Vietnam with Wendy Wu Tours, Adam Ford managed a couple of early morning moments to himself at two of Indochina’s most popular tourist sites. I grimace a little as I set my alarm for our early start tomorrow. I’m so not a morning person - especially on holiday. But then, this will be no ordinary morning. Tomorrow we get to experience the age-old splendour of one of the world’s largest and most extraordinary religious sites – the heart and soul of Cambodia – Angkor. So, an early start it is. Angkor is actually a series of temple complexes and our visit begins at the temple of Ta Prohm. Nowhere is it clearer how the Angkor site was literally swallowed up and hidden by the jungle for so many centuries. Giant tree roots encircle whole sections of the temple. This is one of the best-known parts of Angkor, thanks largely to the movie Tomb Raider and Angelina Jolie – and it actually does look a lot like a movie set! While debate rages over whether Angkor was actually ever ‘lost’, it certainly only came to the attention of the western world around the mid 19th century. Today a million visitors each year make their way to the sprawling site from nearby Siem Reap. Angkor was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992 and is now thought to have originally covered around 1,000 square kilometres. It was constructed by Khmer King Suryavarman ll in the 12th century as a Hindu place of worship, but later became a Buddhist centre. Sunrise is one of the most popular times to visit Angkor and most early risers head straight for the main temple complex of Angkor Wat. There are only a handful of people at Ta Prohm when we arrive and I’m so glad we’ve started our day here. We almost have the site to ourselves! There’s a quiet, gentle stillness in the air as I come across a lone Buddhist monk crouched in one of the temple alcoves, praying silently. I stand watching for a moment or two, completely spellbound by the experience. Later we make our way to majestic Angkor Wat, with its central tower topped with the five distinctive conical spires. It’s breathtaking. The climb to the top of the central tower is

very steep, but well worth it for the spectacular views across the site. There are lots of stairs, so a good pair of walking shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat are essential items of kit for any visit. Fast forward a week or so, and I rise early a second time on this trip. But this time there’s no alarm to wake me, just the gentle rocking of our traditional junk boat floating on the tranquil waters of Halong Bay in north-eastern Vietnam. I make my way up on deck. Wow. No visit to Vietnam would be complete without a visit to Halong Bay. There are some 3,000 limestone islands and rock formations that rise majestically from the waters of the bay. This morning we’re surrounded by towering escarpments. The water is a deep bluey green and the rocky outcrops and soaring peaks are tinged with pink in the watery early morning sunshine. It’s truly stunning. The only sound on deck is the distant chatting of the crew in the galley as the preparation of breakfast gets underway. Curiously, until not so long ago these boats were traditional brown Chinese junks with those distinctive batwing sails. For some reason someone decided they needed a makeover and the junks have all been painted white. Consequently they now look a little like Mississippi River boats with Chinese sails. Charming nonetheless. There are lots of highlights of our cruise on the bay, including visits to a floating fishing village and the Thien Cung Cave complex. But for me this magical morning moment is incredibly special. I spend maybe 15 minutes enjoying the quiet stillness before the rest of the boat starts to stir. Sometimes early starts are worth it, even on holiday. O U R P H OTO G R A P HY T I P S For some of us, taking photos while enjoying a holiday is second nature. However, for others it can be quite a daunting task. For those who lack confidence, here are our top travel photography tips. B E P R E PA R E D Before you head off on your trip, remember to check your memory card is ready with lots of space, you have packed your charger and that your camera has been charged since the last time you used it! O B S E R V E, A P P R O AC H A N D B E F R I E N D LY It’s only natural that you will want to take photos of people; however it’s important to be polite and ask their permission first. Approach with your camera away, have a chat and mention you are taking photos and then ask for their permission before taking their photo.

Helen Martin, Locals in rice fields, Vietnam

Kids are fantastic photo subjects and a great trick to remember is to take a photo and show it to them afterwards. Often enough they’ll laugh and play up to the camera, creating an even better photo than the first. A P P LY T H E R U L E O F T H I R D S The rule of thirds will help you create well balanced and dynamic photos. Look through your camera screen and imagine it’s divided into nine equal segments. The rule of thirds suggests the most important elements in your scene should be positioned along these lines or at the points where they intersect.

H I G H LY CO M M E N D E D

B E O N T H E LO O KO U T F O R E YE C A N DY We’re referring to patterns, repetitions and leading lines. Symmetry and patterns, both natural and man-made, are everywhere and they make great, eye-catching photos. Leading lines lead the eye into the photo and often end at one of the four intersections we mentioned above. RISE AND SHINE ‘Golden hour’ occurs during the first hour of sunrise and sunset every day, providing photographers with beautiful light. Pay attention to the time of sunrise and sunset while you’re travelling. Bian Lian (Face changing) performance, Chengdu

48 hours in Chengdu Remarkable and unique, Chengdu is the relaxed and cheery capital of Sichuan Province and the gateway to China’s western hinterlands. Surrounded by dramatic mountains, bamboo forests and fertile valleys, the city is famous for incredible cuisine, the welcoming local people and China’s most adorable citizens, the Giant Pandas.

The town has a history dating back over 1,700 years and has retained the charms of the Qing dynasty, with cobbled streets, temples and wooden buildings along its curving alleys.

Here’s how to spend the perfect 48 hours... Huanglongxi, Chengdu

Day 1 MORNING You’ll need an early start to catch Chengdu’s best-loved residents at their hungriest and most active. Head out to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to see these adorable animals in an environment similar to their natural habitat, where they will munch through up to 20 kilos of bamboo a day. Visit in autumn or winter and you may see tiny newborns in the nursery. Next, head over to see their mischievous cousins, the Red Pandas, clambering amongst tree branches and bushes. P I T S TO P Stroll down Jinli Street, a pedestrianised road in the old city lined with antique shops, bars and cafes. Stop at one of the snack stalls to sample skewers of spicy chicken, duck or vegetables.

AFTERNOON Drinking tea is central to life in China and nowhere is this more evident than in Chengdu. The locals take it seriously and there is a wellestablished tea-drinking etiquette. Stop in a tea house to sample Longjing Tea and then stroll through Du Fu Cottage grounds, home to the famous 8th century poet.

Day 2 MORNING Travel to Leshan (about 1.45 hour drive from Chengdu) to visit the Grand Buddha. Located in a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the world’s largest stone-carved Buddhist statue. The Buddha is over 71m tall and wide enough for more than 100 people to sit between its feet. AFTERNOON Visit Huanglongxi on your way back to the city.

TOP CHENGDU EXPERIENCES

AFTER DARK Visit Shu Jiu Xiang to sample Chengdu’s most famous and delicious dish - the Sichuan Hot Pot, accompanied by dumplings and mapo doufu (chili-tofu). Later venture to the Sichuan Opera and be amazed by the face-changing art of Bian Lian.
