1.0 Introduction of the Project The project idea begins from brainstorming on current issues, and the current issues that the world is facing now is the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic had brought the entire tourism industry to a grinding halt. Many countries had measures to contain the spread by closing borders, which causing massive job and revenue losses. In this period, the tourism industry had terrible and heavily affected. Hotels shuttered, while some travel agencies and businesses folded as their funds had dried up. Most of the company had to downsize on their employees, while some of them had to diversify their business to survive from this pandemic
The COVID-19 had heavily affected the hotel industry. Based on the survey of 324 hotels, 15% might be closing down permanent and 35% considering a temporary closure.
People that work in the hotel will not lose their job. Currently, in the survey of hotel employees in Malaysia, 2041 of them had laid off, 9713 had take unpaid leave and 5054 had took pay cuts.
And this where the project ideas come in, which this project is aiming to help the hotel industry to had a change in scenery, as hotel industry is one of the industries that heavily affected. Diversify the business may help in reduce the revenue losses and survive from the pandemic. A change in business model also helps the people working in hotel will not lose their job. The project is to had a CONVERSION in business activities, which to transform the hotel industry to a healthcare industry. Today 2.4 billion people are in need of rehabilitation services. Yet there is a significant unmet need for rehabilitation across all world regions. In some countries more than 50% of people who require rehabilitation services do not receive them. There is increasing need for rehabilitation worldwide associated with changing health and demographic trends of increasing prevalence of noncommunicable diseases and population ageing. The proportion of individuals aged over 60 is predicted to double by 2050 and there has been an 18% increase in the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases in the last 10 years. Currently the need for rehabilitation services is not being met and although he health workforce is increasing it is predicted that there will be a short fall in rehabilitation workers, particularly in low-income countries.
And from the studies and research on current population tendency, the world’s older population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. Older people are a rapidly growing proportion of the world’s population. People now are living longer, but that does not necessarily mean that they are living healthier. The increase in the aging population presents many opportunities and several public health challenges that need to prepare for. Increase in population of older adults also increase and higher up the healthcare requirement. The New York Times reported that an estimated 100,000 people had medical tourism to Asia from other countries in 2010. People who want to received premium healthcare are drawn to Southeast Asia for number of reasons, with its low cost of living being a particular standout and with appropriate prices. There are others aspect that attract people to had medical tourism in Southeast Asia, which is the multicultural, the great health options. After researching, the new user had been took in, which is patients with health conditions who experiences difficulties and need special attention and cares daily. The idea of this project is to have a conversion of the resort hotel to a recuperation centre, to have a place to provide better care and better medical support. ______________________________________
So basically, this project is a recuperation centre which provide premium care for patient in need, which is affordable with exceptional high-quality care and services. The staff that previously work in hotel will be re-train and re-educate, and will guide by experienced carers and medical team to fit in the new working environment and serves the new target audience. The aim of this project is to have a conversion of the hotel and resort that had shuttered down, to a recuperation centre and provide the patient everyday life with a high-quality and all-inclusive inpatient nursing care that costs less than the price of similar standard treatment centres in UK, Australia, and US. This recuperation centre provides the patients a worry-free life, which without the concerned about the cultural differences and language barriers in communication. Asian culture always pay attention to be respectful to the older adults, which will be welcomed with high respect and honour. The staff will be trained and educate well and able to speak fluent English. An adequate provision of care levels can achieve excellent improvement in both health and lifestyles.
1.1 Medium As the project had take in the new user, which is the patients that need special and continuous care. Many of the nursing home or recuperation centre, they had the same issues which is the experience in the home or centre may seems boring and dull. In this case, this project is to emphasize on the experience of the spaces. In the beginning, the idea is not emphasizing the experience of space but on the experience of the sound, as it may play an important role in the patients’ experience in daily life which it was quite interesting. As people keep aging, the sensitivity to sound changes as well, and younger and older adults experience sound very differently. This increased sensitivity to sound could help explain why seniors sometimes have a harder time hearing in complex listening environments than younger adults, and do not enjoy spending time in places with a lot of background noise.
The concept idea of the medium is the concept of amplification, which amplify the sound of nature. Noise pollution always is a health hazard and noise can have a direct and immediate effect on a person’s health. Nature sound can have a positive effect on mood, relaxation, reduced anxiety and agitation. The concept of amplification is based on emphasize the experience of space, in terms of behaviours and emotions. As this project is about building up a healthy recuperate community, by transforming the hotel industry into a healthcare industry for the patients, which allow them to had a place that entertaining yet with surrounded with all the high-quality care system. This project concept is aim to had a place that bring the community together and communicate, by emphasized or enhanced the sensory changes, understand their activities and make their experience better.
From that concept, a few researched had been made on some natural sound amplifier, which then found out another term call sound resonance, which is common since young age, the seashell resonance. Seashell resonance is the sound that were heard when ear is put at hole of the seashell. Sound resonance happen in resonant cavity such as empty cup. Resonant sound is created from ambient sound in the surrounding environment by processes of reverberation and amplification within the cavity of the shell, or other type of cavity.
From this, the idea of medium will be using the seashell as a concept idea. Seashell is a natural sound amplifier and act as an inspiration in the medium’s concept idea. A few sketches of the seashell’s shape had been drawn, which 2 types of seashells is being choose, which that two seashells are with longer cavity and more in extendable direction. The way of the sound transmitted in the seashell is easier to understand after sketching, which is mainly through reflection and vibration. The medium, which is a furniture will apply with the idea of reflection and vibration of sound, which using the natural way to amplify the senses.
Sketches of the seashell and the way of reflection
Sketches of the combination and transformation of the medium
As the concept of amplification is based on emphasize the experience of space in terms of behaviours and emotions, which later named this concept as ‘music box’. The shape and form of seashell is taken and make some combination with the words ‘music box’. The outcome of the idea combination is something like a cave- shaped kind of furniture. Why the music box concept idea came out like a cave-liked form? It is because the idea of sound amplification can be implemented in the cave-shaped well, which like a tunnel shape and allow the sound to reflect and vibrate and then amplify to the sitting area of the furniture. The name of this furniture is call ‘The Cave Box’. The idea of the furniture is to let the user to sit and read and enjoy hearing music or natural sound resonant, which is from the natural amplification of the furniture itself.
“ For occupants to share a space, they frequently, must share their experiences”
Sketches of the final outcome of the medium, with simple detailing
The model of the furniture is made using mounting board, as there are some limitations in buying materials and no 3D laser service available in nearby area. The first layer, which is the most outer layer of the furniture is draw first, according to the scale of a mini character model. Then the following layers is then being drawn one after one, which become smaller and smaller.
The small pieces of the shape the stick together accordingly using double side foam tape, which allow between the pieces there are some distance to allow the built-in tube to pass through for transmitting the sound.
This is the final outcome of the model of the medium which show different view of the model. The model is a representative of the amplification. The user can play their device at the designated area and sit inside the furniture, the furniture itself will amplify the sound, which act as a ‘music box’.
2.0 Background Research The proposed title for this project is Sentience Amplifier. Sentience Amplifier is a theme which basically defined as amplification of sensory, by emphasising the nature experience of spaces. This project is a recreational recuperation centre for the patients of older adults, which encouraged the social engagement of the while also emphasized the well experience of the spaces. The definition for this centre is 30% for recuperate, 30% for experience, 20% of community centre, and 20% of stays, which also call a temporary place for the elderly. Recuperation centre also call rehabilitation centre, which a place to help one regain quality and confidence of life after an injury or illness. SO what is rehabilitation? Rehabilitation aims to maximise functional health through evidence-based, outcomes-driven holistic care in specialised environment. Conditions which may include are stroke, post traumatic injury, post surgery, sports & orthopaedic, neurological conditions, and many others. This patient-centric approach emphasizes the individual needs while also maintaining dignity and respect at every stage of recovery journey.
“Rehabilatation:
A Continuum of CARE” Anyone who has undergone surgery or suffered from illness such as stroke or injury, may face long term health consequences upon being discharged from an acute hospital. By continuing medical care and treatment, rehabiltataion offers the best possible chance of regaining full physical and cognitive functions.
WHAT IS REHABILITATION & HOW CAN IT HELP? Rehabilatation aims to help to live as independently as possible, especially if any new arrangements are required after injury or illness. It involves a carefully designed programme and coordnation of care to help regain functional abilities at one’s own pace. To have a successful rehabilatation expereince, it may need to relearn some old skills and learn some new skills.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE INDEPENDENT? The goal of independence in rehabilitation is for one to do activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing, bathing, being mobile, and so on. Rehabilitation works to reduce the limitations one may experience with certain activities, or example, physiotherapy helps improve balance and muscle strength so that can walk better.
WHAT ARE REHABILITATION GOALS AND OUTCOMES? In rehabilitation, outcomes refer to certain scores which indicate the level of progress and independce. For example, are you able tot walk indepdently, what level of assistance is required, if any, has any pain or swelling reduced. By objectively measuring these outcomes before, during and after a course of treatment, one are assured of improvement.
HOW DO REHABILITATION PROGRAMMES DIFFER? Programme design depends on the medical condition, level of care dependency, intensity of therapy, length of stay, and the physical environment. Inpatient rehabilotation is provided in a specialist hospital with 24-hour medical care and a full range of rehabilitation services provided by a multi-disciplinary team.
WHEN SHOULD START REHABILITATION? The first point of treatment oftern begins with acute medical care provided in an acute/general hospital with the aim of stabilising the medical condition. Rehabilitation begins after one are stable. It helps to reduce the effects of problems following the injury or illness. This process takes time, patience, motivation and hard work.
What are the advantages to live in a recuperation community? 1. Encourages A Low Maintenance Lifestyle From raking leaves to washing clothes, there is always something that needs to be done when living at home. These communities eliminate home maintenance tasks and provide a worry-free lifestyle.
2. Offer Personal Care Options Communities having everyday responsibilities taken care of allows patients to live life to the fullest and provide certified nursing assistants to support those who need care regularly.
3. Ensure Safety & Security Communities offer alert systems in each apartment home to maintain safety and peace of mind. 4. Supports Healthy Living Fitness is essential to the well-being of patients. In most cases, the benefits of exercising on a day-to-day basis offset the risk factors. Even medical conditions can be improved with fitness, including memory loss, heart disease . 5. A Vibrant Social Life Socialization is one of the top reasons why many people make to stay in a recuperation community. For guests with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, recuperation communities may accommodate speciality programs catered towards their needs and abilities 6. Focuses On Nutrition Choosing a recuperation community can help you opt back into daily meals that nourish the body and satisfy the soul. Patients in these communities enjoy delicious food fit for their nutritional needs.
There are different type of recuperation or rehabilitation programmes: Active Inpatient Rehab: Intensive, active rehab programme following an injury, surgery or illness. Active Inpatient Rehab involves active participation from the patient in a coordinated programme working to achieve progressive rehab goals and regaining their best level of independence.
Slow Stream Inpatient Rehab: Lower intensity inpatient rehab programme for those transitioning from sub-acute care. A steady start. Slow Stream Inpatient Rehab provides the opportunity for patients to get a gradual start in rehabilitation through an adjusted intensity programme tailored to their specific needs. This flexibility accommodates the patient’s current needs and strives towards achieving their rehab goals.
Extended Rehab Care: Medical-based care for medium to long term staying patients from basic to dependent level of care. An extended care facility is a hospital specialising in caring for patients requiring continued monitoring in a medical environment or hospitalisation. In the extended rehab care programme, it had combine inpatient rehabilitation and skilled nursing care to provide round-the-clock medical support with healthcare and activities of daily living.
Outpatient Rehab: Continuing rehab programme post-inpatient or when patient does not require inpatient rehab. Goal-driven outpatient and day rehabilitation programmes to resume active lifestyle and move forward after a health or medical incident.
Selecting a rehabilitation programme after experience an injury or illness can be hard to do. Patients want a rehabilitation programme that will help one become as independent as one can be in the daily living. Patients also want a programme that will give one the best possible care and takes into account one’s own circumstances, such as where to live, the transport arrangements, and family support.
2.1 Program + Narratives This project is inspired by the affected hotel industry in this COVID-19 pandemic, which a conversion of the shuttered down hotel or resort to a recreational recuperation or rehabilitation centre, to cater the new user, the patients with health conditions who experiences difficulties and need special attention and care daily. It is a retirement and recreational centre for the patients, to provide a basic premium care and assisted living care which is affordable with exceptional high-quality care and services to the older adults that cannot received the same standard treatment centres but cost higher in their own country. The proposed recuperation or rehabilitation centre helps the patients and their families live with ease, while providing the them a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. Even now the world has a little bit different as before, the community living is still important and will provide a vibrant, purposeful lifestyle. Special attention to detail and personalized care will be given to the patients, which make this centre different from other similar centre. In the centre, the staffs are committed to create communities where the patients can thrive, families of the patients feel safe and a sense of comfort, and also the staffs which can being proud to be part of this team in this project. The staffs will be trained to be in a professional leadership team which has experience, compassion and dedication to provide innovative care to them. In order to cater the new user, there are a few programming that need to implement. The first type of programming is for the staffs, as they previously had work and trained to work in hotel, and now in order to cater the new business, the staffs had to re-trained and re-educate to fit and serves the new user well. For the staffs, there are three different aspect and categories to work out with, which is the medical aspect, the diet aspect and the caring aspect. This is the three main points to consider when people choose a recuperation or rehabilitation centre.
PROGRAMMING FOR STAFF Health issue prevention, health maintenance and health treatment are all essential for patients that suffer. Older adults tend to have more medical conditions than any other age group, therefore take more prescription medicines. But as more prescription medications had took in, it become more challenging to manage. Medication managements is an area where small errors can have disastrous effects. Problems can occur from overdosing, underdosing, not taking medicines at the right time, or forgetting to take them altogether. However, not all issues are caused by improperly taking meditations For the medical aspect, to hire a professional medical team is a must, so that the staff had a leading guidance to learn in more professional ways and may ask questions when facing problems, The staff will also provide different level of medical learning program. In another medical aspect, the staff will also have guidance from the professional therapist and also provide the basic training of therapy training from the professional therapist. Good nutrition is essential at any age. Poor nutrition can lead to weight loss, depression, and immune system deficiencies-making patients more prone to illnesses like the common cold. Unsurprisingly, nutrition and exercise are at the top of that list. The nutritional needs truly are different from all different age groups. A good habit in ingesting right nutrition can improves mood, strengthens memory, promotes a healthy immune system, manage weight control & metabolism.
For the diet aspect, as the target audience now is the older adults and the sufficient nutrition and vitamin take in had to take care. Hire a nutritionist is a must, to ensure sufficient nutrient received and also can provide suitable diet plan for all individual guests. Nutritionist can also provide basic nutrition guidance to the staffs.
Mobility, immunity, cognitive ability and wellness can all help delay the common health problems that patients face, even with taking the precautionary measures necessary. A stay in a skilled nursing and carers community should feel like a warm welcome from compassionate staff and caregivers. The skilled nursing communities place enjoyment as a priority and provide opportunities for residents to engage and connect.
For the caring aspect, the staffs are required to attend the professional nursing program and will be trained at the assistant nurse level before the staffs officially start to work. Professional carers will be hired to lead the team and give as much assists and guidance.
PROGRAMMING FOR GUESTS In this recuperation centre, the guests deserve to live life to the fullest each day, by create better lifestyles through innovation, personalized care, and compassion for the guest. The guests can enjoy services and amenities, which include tasty and nutritious meals, attentive security and staff, and the engaging social connection throughout the environment and space. Rehabilitation is a specialty branch of medicine that aims to maximize functional health and restore quality of life to those who have physical or cognitive impairments. For the programming of the guests, it is mainly under regenerative and preventive medicine.
HEALTHY AGEING The Healthy Ageing programme takes around a 12-month journey of discovering one’s health status & risks and what is proactive measures to practice in order to get the health back on track.
REGENERATIVE CELL THERAPY Combining stem cell therapy with existing rehabilitation treatments has the potential to boost well-being and energy levels as well as improve concentration.
CORPORATE WELLNESS Recharge Your Health is the wellness programme designed for coporate clients. It tackles each factor by bringing together a team of subject matter experts in engaging health assesements and workshop.
REGENERATIVE ORTHOPAEDICS Focuses on the body’s natural healing ability through non-surgical, minimally invasive procedures. It encourages body to self-heal and strengthen damdaged areas to restore functions.
No one plans to get sick or get hurt, but sometimes it just happens. Life may not be the same for someone who has suffered from major injury or illness after being discharged from an acute hospital. Rehabilitation is the continuation of medical care for these individuals and gives them the best possible chance of regaining full physical and cognitive functions. The guests living with memory impairment, dementia or Alzheimer’s thrive best in calm atmospheres and familiar settings that minimize distraction and confusion. This communities had specialized programming which tailor the social interactions, daily programs, and stimulating activities to fit with the abilities of the guests. In the recuperation centre, there are a variety of activities and life enrichment programs so that the guests, which is the older adults can explore new interests and continue doing what they enjoy and love. Under the different type of living and caring options, there are five different types of programs: Move, Grow, Feel, Reflect and Connect.

THE ROUTINE TIMELINE OF A DAY A routine means doing the same basic activities around the same time every day. This gives structure and a natural flow to the day. Not only does this help the day flow easier, but also ensures that very important things get done without fail, such as medication management, regular nutritious meals and daily hygiene. As think through the routine, the goal is to just make it as structured and predictable as possible so they do not have to wonder what is happening next. These are some of the benefits from structured daily routine: 1. Reduced stress and anxiety Some of the patients may feel quite stressed and worried if they being a burden with their caregivers, or they may worry about how they will just get through the day in recovering. Helping them to know exactly what is coming next is one of the best ways to restore a sense of dignity and security. 2. Increased feeling of safety and security A daily routine can help them feel in control of their day. This is especially true for dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, which daily structure will help these patients feel more confident. 3. Improve sleep The consistency of a routine allows for best rest and deeper sleep. Many studies have shown that people are healthier and better rested when they have a good routine, which may help to solve the people with trouble sleeping through the night.

They can even have some activities like music therapy or massage treatments, attend language classes or just a simple writing or reading to end the day. Guests are encouraged to pursue their interests and start new hobby and new activities.
2.2 Site Proposal As older adults ages, their mobility, senses and preferences change. They have different challenges with everyday activities like eating and walking. They see, hear and smell things differently and may have strong opinions, especially about their surroundings. Choosing a site specially for older adults living communities must address these physical and emotional changes. The planning and building of highly attractive and functional older adult living and age care homes require ultimate architectural and interior design considerations today. With the increasing demand for excellent older adult living communities and age care residences, more innovative, inviting, and practical building of this type of residence is a necessity. For this reason, they are only enthusiastic about moving to a sophisticated, modern residence for older adults that offers many desirable features and amenities of a contemporary, comfortable styles.
The Hotel Penaga
The final site that I had choose is The Hotel Penaga. Hotel Penaga is a heritage boutique hotel which located at Georgetown facing Jalan Hutton, Jalan Transfer and Jalan Clarke. The Hotel Penaga was the first heritage restoration project in Malaysia to be given a Gold Rating by the Green Building Index, included in this rating system are factors such as living conditions and safety for on-site workers. As the site is located at the intersection and crossroad of busy roadways, there are many business buildings around the site, especially the commercial buildings. But in this COVID-19 pandemic, many business had shuttered down and there are many slots around too, which had abandoned or waited to be rented out. There are many quite a few restaurants and cafes around the site too, which easy for the people that stay at the site can try the local foods, which is in walkable distance.
MAIN STAFF’S ACTIVITIES CIRCULATION MAIN GUESTS’ ACTIVITIES CIRCULATION MAIN VEGETATION/ GREENERY MAIN ROAD CIRCULATION
From the colour-categorized plan, it can see that the main activities of the staff are around the main buildings. And for the activities of the guests are around the other 2 buildings.
Accessibility around the area
MAJOR ROAD MINOR ROAD
From the circulation above, there are 3 main roads around the site. The Transfer Road and Hutton Lane are the major roads which is also a one-way road. For the minor road, which is the Clarke Lane, is a double-way road.

6. Utilities
Penaga Hotel used solar panel that is installed at the roof top. The example of solar panel that been used is HIT double bifacial photovoltaic module which generates additional electricity from reflected ambient light. The electricity that is produced is used to heat the water for shower and day lighting, especially since the hotel needs extra light at the lobby and corridor. The use of solar panel has been proved to have positive impact on both physical and mental condition of the people; Penaga Hotel also used the photometric sensor at the corridor to minimise the usage of electricity. The type of air conditional that had been installed in Hotel Penaga is also energy efficient. The inverter unit reaches the desired room temperature faster and continuously regulate its thermal transfer flow in response to cooling demand. The advantages of using this kind of inverters unit are that it is less prone to breakdowns, cheaper to run, a quieter outdoor compressor, 60% more energy savings and it work as moisture removal. Other than that, the individual lighting control that was used in this building saves electricity and energy.
Hotel Penaga has been restored with the environment in mind, and this is seen by the salvaging of old materials form buildings that were demolished around Penang, from timber structures to floor tiles. New materials that were needed were made using 80 year old pressing techniques, as well as handmade bamboo mats from East Malaysia, patchwork kilims from Turkey, cow skin from China and sisal from India. The garden is peppered with all sorts of indigenous Malaysian flowers and trees and the swimming pool uses salt water to reduce chemical usage. The garden is watered using run off from the rooftops and the kitchens separate biodegradable materials. In the 1950’s and 60s, Transfer Road was one of the places offering hotels to visitors in Penang. Being at the fridge of the Georgetown World Heritage Site, Transfer Road is again a choice location for small to moderate size accommodations, with a number of hotels opening along the road. As the Penaga Hotel is located within the UNESCO heritage site, which also an area that full with tourists, with many hotels around and different kind of landmarks to visit in a walking distance. Other than that, there are also many famous street food and restaurants within that area, which makes this site a favourable place to stay when exploring Georgetown.
9. Sensory Aspects Penaga Hotel is a boutique hotel which located in the middle of the Georgetown, the buffer zone of the UNESCO heritage site. It is right at the corner of 3 roads, with terraces building shophouses around it. With this location, it can see that there is no pleasing view from the building to the outside, as it is only surrounded with shophouses building. In the Hotel Penaga, they had transform the back lane to a “Landscape Area”, which a level of privacy was attained by having planter box at the edge of the walkway facing the roads. Typically for shophouses in Penang, the back lane is shared among them and them and defined as public realm. However, with the new development, some of the back lanes were redesigned to complement the new use of the building. In the Penaga Hotel, the three blocks have back lanes that are connected to each other, forming a T-shaped backyard for the hotel. The backyard is the best views for the building, which leads the focus of the whole building design to the middle.

These spaces had used the type of direct experience of nature, which introduced in the form of natural light, air, plants, water features, landscapes and more. In the plan, most of the wall had been removed and left only the column to maximise the openness of the space. All of guest’s rooms in all the buildings is design to had windows, and facing the view of landscape and also allow natural lighting into the rooms. Natural lighting always had a good effect in recuperate and also helping to improve health condition. All the block had equipped with lifts and stairs, and all connected with corridors, especially the first floor, which the staffs block is well connected to the other 2 blocks so that immediate response can be given when the guests need help.
