About Wen Hao,Yu My name is Wen Hao and my artistic talents have been affirmed from a young age. Hence, my application to the Department of Digital Multimedia Arts at Shih Hsin University was successful, and I began my studies there in the summer of 2006. The curriculum focused on the cultivation of visual aesthetics and the use of application software. While learning about 3D animation in several of the courses, I realized that I was very interested in space and set design. After completing one year of conscripted military service, I was fortunate to be able to join a design studio with a designer whom I greatly admire and work with the team for 2 years, and then I started my graduate studies of interior architecture and design at Academy of Art University in the summer of 2013. I have fully passion in interior architecture and design. This is a place where I share my design ideas, aesthetics, and works. I’d like to focus on creating the space with perfect balance between function and aesthetics. I believe that a space should be seen as a three dimensional painting, so I always emphasize the importance of composition and proportion of each space. W.H will keep providing timeless, artistic, and modern designs attached with warm and peaceful vibes.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN IAD800 : Modern Design Studio Summer 2015 Instructor : Ivan Azerbegi Project Name : Modern Composition No.1 by WEN HAO, YU

Residential | Modern Composition No.1

MODERN COMPOSITION NO.1 The existing “domino frame located in Oakland, California in the United States is the very beginning of this project. The three story construction with 819sq.ft on each level is owned by a young married couple with no plans to have any children for the next 5 to 8 years. Both of the clients are working in the art field and engaging in modern artworks, so the mission of the project is to design a living environment with a fully artistic atmosphere and can truly reflect what the clients are striving for in their life, based on the existing domino house frame.

08

Residential | Modern Composition No.1

CONCEPT Modern Pattern Absorbing the advantages of modern art and refining the geometry and lines into a three dimensional space is the main design concept of this project. Since both of the clients are modern artists, the place in which they reside should reflect what they are doing. I actually thought about this house as a threedimensional abstract painting which combines the ideas and elements that had been taken from classic modern art paintings. Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart and Piet Cornelies Mondrian first came to mind and soon became my inspiration. Both of these works are known for their composition of lines, squares and colors -- which reaches towards perfect proportions from irregular composition, just like modern artists who find the balance between innovation and tradition. The entire building follows the “modern pattern from exterior to interior and from the first floor to top of the building. The goal is to treat every corner of the space as an abstract modern painting, to be not only playful but interesting and full of artistic atmosphere.

PROGRAMMING Based on the desired requirements from clients, I started to think about the relationships between each space and tried to maximize the function of each space, also to connect each space with interesting spatial design ideas. I would like to place the studio on the first level with a semi-open environment and access to a carport or outdoor area. The second floor is the living room and dining areas, a semi-private floor -- and the bedroom is located on third floor which is connected to a private, small rooftop garden.

RETAIL DESIGN IAD800 : Retail Design Spring 2015 Instructor : Stephanie Smith-Haenel Projects : 1. Jewely Company Inc. 2. Macy’s Women’s Shoes department by WEN HAO, YU

Retail Store | Jewelry Company Inc.

JEWELRY COMPANY INC. Jewelry Company Inc. intends to redesign the U.S. store prototype to be more suitable for the future by rolling out a reinterpretation of other format types. The objective is to design and develop a prototype design into a top‐middle open air lifestyle mall in Rosedale, Illinois. The store is anticipated to be an inline corner, ‘main street’ (3000 ft2/300 m2 ) and on one level. The intent is to align the store environment with the intended consumer journey and the new brand position; to create an effective design that conveys the refreshed brand to the guests while innovating though merchandising, sales, and operations.

CONCEPT

Reflect From Nature Inspired from the process of diamond production and other forms of gemstones, the faceting and polishing of the surface into various directions allows the natural beauty from the surrounding environment to be absorbed. The charm of diamonds and its shiny surface caused by its reflection and refraction from surrounding light shows how a rough stone can still become a precious treasure. This symbolizes how we bring nature into human civilization. Therefore, my design concept is to enlarge the scale of this idea, focusing on how to extend natural forms from the surrounding area into the store. The connection with nature eliminates the typical atmosphere of other high-end jewelry stores. The goal is to create a space with a story and culture.

CEILING & ELEVATIONS The ceiling design is based on the idea of the facet surface of diamonds. By folding the ceiling to create a set of geometric compositions and extending the shape from ceiling to walls to make a connection between the ceiling and elevations. In order to make more depth and layers for the ceiling design above the sales area, I left some parts of the ceiling with its original concrete structure exposed, which also reflects my design concept of the connection between nature and human civilization.

The connection

EXTERIOR The rugged stone is the main material utilized for the exterior structure. The oblique glass surfaces can reflect not only the natural environment but also people who walk on the street. The store itself can be seen as a bridge which builds up a strong connection between humans and nature.

The packaging design collaborates with local artists and provides different collections for choosing. The main concept is “nature’s pattern” which is consistent with the interior space’s design by using bright colors to represent the beauty of nature.

Retail Store | Macy’s Women Shoes Department

Women’s Shoes Prototype Store Macy’s is known for its niche in popular culture and the diversity of its merchandise. It competes with Belk, Bon-Ton, Dillard’s, Kohl’s, JCPenney, Boscov’s and Sears. More upscale facilities compete with Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue and Von Maur. Macy’s flagship store on Herald Square is advertised as the largest in the world, and draws shoppers from well beyond to the New York City metropolitan area. As of 2012, Macy’s is the largest U.S. department store company in retail sales and became the 16th largest retailer in the U.S. in 2013 in terms of revenue.

42

CONCEPT

Movement Movement can be represented by the beauty created by people, which also represent Macy’s readiness to move to the next step. I was inspired by the aesthetics of movement created by the human body. By abstracting human movements, such as the way we walk or the way we dance, the lines and shapes can be interpreted into a beautiful image just like an abstract painting. Transferring the paths and waves of people’s movement into three dimensions is my main design concept for this project. The combination of soft lines and graceful shapes can symbolize the elegance of women and also makes the space more dynamic.

Current customer

TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC According to Macy’s 2013 annual revenue report, it shows that the biggest percentage of revenue is from feminine accessories, intimate apparel, cosmetics and shoes.

According to Kantar Retail’s research, the current Macy’s shopper is around 46 years of age, and has a household income of $82,570. Overall, Macy’s target customers are primarily older parents or working older couples who are college educated.

+ Future customer Department stores and other players in the retail industry are focusing on Millennials, people between the ages of 16 and 34. Macy’s, which operates about 840 stores, in 2012 brought together its millennial teams from merchandising, planning, marketing and private brands into a new open-concept office space in New York City so they could work together. And macy’s has launched several collections specifically aimed at Millennials, including QMack, Maison Jules, and Bar III Carnaby.

MUSEUM DESIGN IAD800 : Modern Design Studio Summer 2015 Instructor : Ivan Azerbegi Project Name : Stickley Museum by WEN HAO, YU

Museum | Stickley Museum

STICKLEY MUSEUM The site is located on the edge of the Cranbrook campus in Michigan, a place to enjoy the beautiful view of the lake because it is positioned high up. The existing staircase which wraps around the courtyard leads down to a lawn area with trees near the edge of the lake. The intent for this project is to design a small museum to pay tribute to Gustav Stickley for his contribution of craftsmanship furniture. However, to integrate and maximize the advantages from the surrounding natural environment will become the main challenge of this museum design.

64

Museum | Stickley Museum

CONCEPT

Embedding Stickley furniture is known for its stable and high quality workmanship. One of the quintessential techniques which we can find in any craftsman style furniture such as Stickley’s is embedding; the cutting of pieces of elements into specific shapes around the junctions then connected nicely to make extremely strong and stable structures. Finally, surfaces are smoothed and a final coating is applied. This process shows the passion and professionalism in Stickley’s work. I was inspired by the process of his furniture production, especially with how each element connects to one another. I believe the word “embedded” will be a nice concept for the project. It expresses the idea of connecting people to the building, as well as embedding the building with the environment.

Circular circulation The lobby at the first floor is an open space for visitors. There is also an exhibition area where some of Stickley’s furniture is showcased in casual way. In order to make the traffic flow unobstructed, I made an extension deck to provide better circulation for visitors to walk around the stairs as a center point.

SHOWROOM IAD800 : Commercial Design Spring 2015 Instructor : Serena Zanello Project Name : Fireclay Tiles Showroom by WEN HAO, YU / Joshua.Z

Showroom | Fireclay Tilea Showroom Design

FIRECLAY TILES San Francisco Showroom The Fireclay team is focusing on doing high quality hand-made tiles with sustainable materials and process, providing vary colors, custom size and pattern for their client. Located in 901 Brannan street, San Francisco. There are lots of different showrooms around this area, and the SF design center is just few blocks away from Fireclay Tile showroom. The neighbors are most design related firms or showrooms, so this area is a place can gather designers and architects or house owners together.

Showroom | Fireclay Tiles Showroom Design

CONCEPT Layers Inspired by the process of tile production, especially the multi-layering of each tile, we are able to refine this overlapping idea into the interior space design. A tile can break down roughly into three separate layers -- the foundation layer at the bottom, the painted surface layer in middle, and the glazed top layer. By applying this idea into the space, the showroom at the front can represent the glazed top layer by polishing their products. The space between the showroom and office can be seen as the middle layer, with a more fun and creative atmosphere. Finally, the office at the back is the foundation layer to support the entire space and company. The layers can be integrated nice and close, just like a beautiful and solid piece of tile.

CURRENT STATUS The exterior of the showroom is lack of attractive skin, and couldn’t really find the connection between outside and inside, even the showroom and the working office at the back. The feeling of working space behind the showroom are too serious, isn’t showing the enjoyable working atmosphere as we expected. And the backyard should be used with more efficient. So our idea is try to increase the connection from exterior through showroom to the working area finally to the yard. Additionally, the pantry space is quite narrow, it is also the problem should be concerned.

Showroom | Fireclay Tilea Showroom Design

PROGRAMMING Based on the layers idea of tiles, we divide the entire space into three different zones. The showroom which should be the most shining area like the top glaze layer, the semi-public space such as restroom or presentation space should be seen as the painted surface layer in the between of top layer and the bottom foundation layer which where the office area is.

Glazes layer : showrrom

Painted surface layer : public spaces

Fundation layer : private area / working spaces

Since the color of hand-painted tile collections have a higher saturation, we using magnet to attach the physical samples against the white vertical panels to make a stronger contrast. CONCEPT

Rhythm I chose “rhythm” as my design concept for the H.M.T.D corporate office. The word “rhythm” always reminds people to think of music, but if we transform this word into design, we can understand that both music and design are actually following the same idea. When we arrange the melody of a song, we set the mood by incorporating emotion; by knowing when’s the perfect time to make the song louder or when decrescendo to a softer volume. This directly correlates to design. For example, we need to know when to leave a space empty or where to pop out colors. The purpose of both music and design is to communicate, influence, and attract people. However, “rhythm” is what sets the pace and connects them nice and close.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

3FORM varia ecoresin - Transparency panel A dynamic translucent resin panel. Choose the right color, pattern, texture, interlayer and finish to make your space pop with intrigue. Heat-formable and available in custom sizes and gauges.

Florock Epoxy flooring - LEED point Florock epoxy floor coatings demonstrate distinctly long life cycles. The coatings can outlast typical floor coverings by years, preventing you from requiring removal, replacement and disposal as frequently as you would otherwise. When one of our systems finally does reach the end of its long life, it can typically remain in situ, to be used as a substrate for the next floor—or, if you prefer, if can be removed as non-hazardous waste.

EnGuard - Glass-free insulation EnGuard uses recycled fibers that are thermally bonded together, eliminating the need for chemical bonding agents. This means no formaldehyde or other nasty miasmas and nothing to break down over time — this insulation can last a lifetime.

Enviro Board - Interior wall Enviro Board has developed and patented a milling process that converts agricultural waste fiber such as rice straw, wheat straw, elephant grass, and sugar cane into low-cost, environmentally friendly building panels.

The Shape of Light My inspiration comes from the nature of light and shadow. The geometry and the way how sunlight and shadows stagger is the major concept of my design. People will like being surrounded by the light and shadows inside this space. They can feel as if they’re part of those shapes and can also see each corner of the space as an abstract painting.

The Mystery The mystery is the name I give to this project. And the growth ring is my design concept for this Columbia retail store design, my inspiration comes from the nature wood patterns. The target customers of the Columbia Sport are those people who love explore and adventure, so I try to treat all the wood patterns from two dimensional into three dimensional to represent the mystery or discovery, allow the customers can enjoy the experience of the interior space.

CONCEPTIAL DESIGN - The Nest My design concept is based on how birds build their nests. Birds selectively carry materials they need such as branches and leaves from thousand miles away, back and forth, step by step, they start to build a strong and warm nest for their little ones. This story can apply to the design of a conference room. A conference room is a place where everybody brings their thoughts and ideas together with the intent of building a strong business together.
