PEER TUTORING

The Student Success Studio is made up of three vital parts: Peer Tutoring led by Tom Batcho, Disability Services led by Ariel Lesnick, and Academic Advising led by Mary McCormack. The Success Studio can be found on the third floor of Beatty, and can be reached at successstudio@wit.edu; 617-989-HELP (4357).

ACADEMIC ADVISING

“A physical and virtual space that is home to an integrated, onestop-shop dedicated to seamless academic advising, academic support, and student success…Our student success approach is holistic, developmental, and empowerment-based centering our work on supporting students in reaching their educational, professional, and personal goals.” - Mary McCormack

TOM BATCHO Peer tutoring provides students with support from peers who have previously succeeded in the course. There are three types of tutoring available: Appointment Based: Schedule skill/course based appointments with tutors who specialize in that area Embedded Tutors: Students attend classes to assist students during their class time. Drop-in Sessions: A group of student tutors will hold a study session that any student can join.

ARIEL LESNICK Support students with academic, residential, physical, or dietary disabilities. The main goal of the service is to provide an inclusive environment for all students. There are testing rooms to provide alternative testing options for students, as well as strong collaboration efforts with other departments regarding accessibility on campus.

MARY MCCORMACK Upon arrival at Wentworth, all students are assigned a Student Success Advisor for support through the transition into the school as well as providing a resource and connection for related questions. The advisor is responsible for assisting students in creating an academic plan and developing their goals. Second year, each student is also provided an advisor from their respective program.

7

REGISTRATION

For returning students, class registration for next semester is usually made available by the registrar’s office two to three months before the semester begins. Students will receive emails from the Registrar’s Office announcing registration opening dates.

8

OVERRIDING

Wentworth students can register their classes in multiple ways via the following:

For students that had recently transferred into a new program, credits for some of the classes you took might be transferable to your new program. However, this is not guaranteed. You must consult with your academic advisor to determine eligibility for credit transfers.

You might find instances that require an override to fulfill your semester schedule. This is completely normal.

Register via CRN number *This is best for students who already know the Course Registration Number (CRN) of the classes they want to take.

REGISTRATION ORDER

First-year students typically register for their classes during New Student Orientation.

MAJOR TRANSFER & TRANSFER STUDENTS

Register via Class Lookup *This is most convenient for students who are still exploring classes to register.

All students attending Wentworth are required to register their classes through Leopardweb. The Institution had made it easy for students to register for classes online for their upcoming course semester. At the beginning of university enrollment, your faculty advisor should provide you with a Major Tracking Sheet that lays out all the required courses and electives you need to take in order to graduate. This tracking sheet is curated specifically for your major. It is important for students to follow the guide when registering for classes.

REGISTRATION METHODS

Creative Cloud | Project Proposal

For students whose credit cannot carry over, you will have to register for the required courses or elective courses that satisfy your new major. This could postpone your program completion and extend your graduation date.

You can reach out to your academic advisor, Assistant to the Dean, and department Deans for overrides when you submit a request. It is best to first reach out to the Assistant to the Dean for an override, as they typically can resolve the matter most effectively.

HOUSING

OFF CAMPUS OPTIONS Many students choose to live in the following areas close to campus: Mission Hill, Longwood, Brookline, Fenway/ Kenmore Rent can be a wide range of prices depending on many factors such as location, amount of roommates, how newly renovated it is, amenities, parking options, and more. Typical rent in these areas can be from $800 to $1500. Public transportation is easy to use and reliable, though be mindful that it stops running late at night (around 12:00am-1:00am, depending where you are) For students looking to find off-campus housing, the housing office has programs in the works to guide students on how to manage rent, landlords, leases, finances, roommates, and more.

Choosing to live either on or off campus can be a tough decision, and many factors may influence your choice. It is important to consider what factors may be most important to you, including cost, accessibility to campus for classes, activities, and services, roommate groups, cleanliness and quality of the apartment, amenities, and more. For some students, being a commuter from home may be the best option, and for other students, being able to roll out of bed and be in class less than 10 minutes later is enough reason to stay in a dorm on campus. There is no right or wrong choice, just what works best for you and your wants/needs. To learn more about commuter life, visit the Commuter section of this guide.

BE A RESIDENT ASSISTANT (RA) - Be a mentor to your fellow residents and help them adjust to dorm life - Create engaging and fun programs to have residents interact with each other - As an RA, your room charges are covered for the semester - “I’m more than just an RA, not just a mentor, but a friend that residents can come to about anything.” - Anonymous Resident Assistant in 525 Huntington, Spring 2022

RESIDENTIAL EXPERIENCE COUNCIL - Great way to get involved in a leadership position within the residence halls - Doesn’t require being a Resident Assistant - REC serves as the liaison between residents and Residential and Commuter Life (RCL) Their primary goals are: - To make each community a welcoming place for all - Provide resident feedback to RCL - host opportunities for engagement for all residential students.

COMMUTING

ON-CAMPUS PARKING Automobile & Motorcycle Parking In order to park on campus, students must register their vehicle with Public Safety. The fee for a commuter permit is $250.00 per academic semester and is valid from the hours of 7:00 am to 10:00 pm daily. All motorcycles must be registered with Public Safety, with permits being available for $20.00 per academic semester. Motorcycle parking is limited to motorcycle racks in areas marked “Motorcycle Parking Only”.

COMMUTING WITH MBTA

Parking Violations MBTA Semester Pass Program All students have the option to pre-pay for a 4-month pass, saving 11% overall. These cards are intended for students who will take the subway or commuter rail daily, and must be ordered in advance of the semester. Purchase Link: For students using the MBTA less frequently it is recommended to load money on to a Charlie Card and pay as you go.

In order to avoid warnings, tickets, or being towed, be sure to properly display your parking permits while on campus. Regular rounds are made by Public Safety Officers through campus parking lots. Vehicles may be towed after three violations but does not limit the University from towing vehicles that are obstructing, parked in tow zones, handicapped spaces or are otherwise deemed hazardous. * Daily temporary permits can be purchased for $10.00 per day at Public Safety.

*Many local stops will not have card reloading available, but you will be able to reload your card with cash on the tram or bus itself if needed.

INTERNATIONAL

COMING TO WENTWORTH When you arrive at Wentworth as an exchange or international student, you know everything about the process of going abroad. When everything is arranged for your education, it comes to making the best of your stay here! But what now?

016

Make sure to talk to the faculty, deans, and other students to see what is possible and meets your interests. Think about joining a sports team for example! Wentworth arranges a lot of activities all over campus. So, another tip is to follow some WIT Instagram accounts like @witevents and @witstudentlife and keep an eye on the posters around campus to see if there are events you would like to go to.

Creative Cloud | Project Proposal

INTERNATIONAL ADMISSIONS

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES

We welcome students from more than 70 countries around the world and nearly 7% of our student body comes from outside the US! Our growing list of STEM programs make it possible for students studying on an F-1 visa to extend their OPT for an additional 24 months.

ISS helps international students through intercultural and integration advising. They advise you on maintaining your immigration status and provide help with mandatory co-op paperwork and working after your study..

WISA

Wentworth International Student Association (WISA). The association currentare around 60 members from 29 countries.

WHY STUDY ABROAD?

Studying abroad will bring many benefits. A lot of students even describe it as life-changing. First, of all, you get the chance to see the world. Moreover, it will allow you to craft a global network. While the world is globalizing, it can be very helpful to gain international connections and have cross-cultural experiences. You can make lifelong friends and build a professional network. In addition, living in another culture will also give you the chance to try new things, for example, all the new foods you just can’t get at home. Studying abroad will also boost your resume. 97% of students who studied abroad found employment within 12 months of graduation and 25% earned higher salaries than their peers. Lastly, it will make you a better you. You gain a lot of qualities, for example, it teaches you cross-cultural communication, adaptability, personal leadership and so much more (CIEE, n.d.)!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE?

When you are considering studying abroad, get in contact with your student advisor! They can guide you through the process of deciding if you want to go abroad, where you want to go, and they can get in contact with the right people to arrange this adventure.

WHAT ARE COSTS LIKE?

One of the biggest concerns for students is the costs of studying, let alone studying abroad. Wentworth provides financial aid to students who study abroad.

In these clubs and organizations, you will find peers with similar interests and hobbies. They will also provide an outlet for the stress that stems from the workload of classes. Wentworth currently has over 70 clubs to choose from, in a wide variety of categories, ranging from academic to recreational.

Counseling Support Services

“Students should really take care of themselves; not just in one area but all areas. Always make time for time yourself and always have time for self-care" - Maura Mulligan

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY STUDENT LIFE

Mild Concern

Moderate Concern

Severe Concern

Mild concerns can be related to many areas such as feeling overwhelmed academically, trouble adjusting to new environments, or feeling isolated. These concerns can be addressed with skills and strategies.

When your self-care strategies are not working and you need ongoing support, it may be time to seek professional help. Moderate concerns are those that are getting in the way of life. You may be having thoughts of worthlessness, worry or panic that you cannot control, significant problems in your relationships or having experienced traumatic events.

Severe concerns may involve dangerous and/ or traumatic experiences including but not limited to assault and violence, thoughts of suicide, excessive substance use, inability to take care of oneself, hallucinations, delusions or losing the ability to communicate.

What should students be focused on to keep a healthy student life? In order to maintain a healthy life style while in college, be sure to have proper nutrition, engage in physical fitness, have time for stress relief, and always make time to sleep properly.
