T

he cooler weather marks the end of summer bliss as we enter into autumn nothing is more aparent than the reflection of the high street, awash with shades of grey, olive and browns. Flip flops , t-shirts and shorts make way for warmer, protective clothes as though we are sheltering from impending danger. The colder air though, does lend hand to more interesting and creative fashion choices, and particularly for experimenting with new trends. It most definitely is the most playful time to find your personal style, and it couldn’t be a more exciting time for menswear.

Battlefield signals a period of toughening up in the austere economical climate. It’s time to slip off your carefree clothes and dress in the style of the new defensive, offensive we’re all launching on life. Leading the way are D&G, whose fall collection was heavily inspired by the military and aristocracy.

I hope you enjoy ‘Battlefield’, and come out the other side stronger than before... or at least looking a little stronger!

I know the issues are coming out a few and far in between, [as i say every issue!] but rest assure knowing that I’ve been growing and improving on what I love to do. I get better at it each time so until next, thanks for coming back.

STYLISHLY SCALLY The infamous Northern scally has received a tres chic makeover this season. Christopher Shannon has managed to transform the intimidating demeanor of a classic British scally into a look which emanates street savvy style. His fusion of blocked neutrals and neon highlights [in an unexpected peachy palate] give a fresh and alluring approach to what is usually the dreariest dressed seasons of all.

THE NEW FACES OF MENSWEAR PROJECT This season WWIT’s spotlight is set on “The new Faces of Menswear Project” by Oki-ni, all about eight new innovative designers that are due to make a big splash on the menswear scene. Having been keeping my eyes open for common features within menswear, it is hard to ignore the sudden influx in oversized t-shirts floating about London with preened male faces hovering above.

This up and coming trend was confirmed through Odeur’s fifth collection. The designers behind the brand have come up with a collection of classic yet playful shapes for this season. Taking a basic shape and adding an unexpected fabric or cut into the mix: for example their new selection of t-shirts, all of which will sit comfortable below your bottom, whilst airing an interesting texturised image across the front.

PEOPLE’S MARKET Were-for a while-a pearl of secret wisdom within menswear, however now that ASOS has claimed them, their popularity is sure to sky rocket into oblivion [and for wonderful reason].

This A/W Peoples Market have created a glamourised approach to grunge for menswear. With the models all smudged with black kohl around the eyes, and plaid making a familiar appearance throughout, there are definately some Kurt Cobain undertones running through the collection.

A gothic edge gives this selection of attire a modern twist, and the occasional dandy detail references the era of Gentlemen that so many other collections have referenced for the colder months. Jethro Lazenby The spawn of aussie rock sensation Nick Cave and Beau Lazenby [a pretty face] is causing somewhat of an earth quake on the British modelling scene, and not for no reason. His wild waves, and sharp undercut are putting the underground trends on top. His look is neither classically handsome nor well dressed, but his grungy style and bizarre hair is perfect for these uncertain times, the male answer to Alice Dellal. Team chunky vintage knitwear with ill fitting jeans and ankle boots for an edgy look reminiscent of this heir to the menswear throne.

Is soon to be propelled into modern day dandyism through his portrayal of Oscar Wilde’s troubled creation ‘Dorian Gray’. It is by no means his first step into the fashion spotlight, modelling alongside Kate Moss for Burberry and featuring as the face of Mango HE menswear, he is no stranger to high fashion and this is wonderfully obvious when seeing his stylishly casual way of dressing himself. Big collared coats, slimline tailoring and lots of grey. He is setting the tone for the colder months in effortless style.

Always a wild card thrown into many a ‘Best Dressed’ list, but this season his awkward - geography teacher-esque way of dressing himself is more fashionably relevant than ever.

OLSEN TWINS PRESENTS: THE ROW

The Olsen twins have announced their next targets: Older men who ooze masculinity. [with the help of their new menswear range of course].

The fashion maestro twins are set to expand their empire into the realms of menswear this season, although the range is not exactly recession friendly, it was created with good intentions at heart: “When we looked in the men’s market, we couldn’t really find basics you could wear with designer. So we started the process with pants and blazers, because we knew it would take time to get that right.”

The prices start at $200 and stretch exceedingly far to $2000, so perhaps place items from this collection on the wish list and continue pioneering the high street on high street look?

alexander wang A momentous occasion is on the verge of transforming menswear, Alexander Wang - the man who single handedly transformed jersey into a lust worthy fabric for womenswear, and reinvigorated the life of leather in fashion whilst pioneering a famously androgynous look for females is venturing into menswear.

The current designer sweetheart has previewed his menswear collections for Spring

2010 [plenty of time to save up] in a short video featuring the facial talents of Vincent LaCrocq adorned in Wang’s creations whilst hanging around a basketball court.

Although it is unlikely that anyone would buy an exquisitely made Alexander Wang original to tear it up on the basketball court, it certainly sets a nice scene, showcasing filmy jersey vests with exaggerated arm holes, confirming the loosening of mens clothes for the future seasons, if Alexander Wang is out your price range, you could easily re-create the look with XXL t-shirts and vests, put them over a suitably soft pair of harems and you will look effortlessly elegant whilst remaining comfortable.

Kid British

K

idBritish are one of my favourite bands to emerge on the scene in 2009. four cheeky chaps from Manchester with a quirky ska sound, they maintain that they ‘create their own noise by mixing a bit of this with a bit of that’ and ending up with one big fat manky sandwich.

Adio, James, Simeon and Sean are childhood friends who started making music together in 2005. Adio and Simoen and James grew up together and met sean on the Manchester music scene during school. Four different personalities and rapping styles which blend together in my opinion perfectly.

Their musical influences range from “the Specials” to Madness, to Micheal Jackson to Jay Z, from Oasis to Roots Manuva, from Soft cell to “Nirvana” and being products of the ‘Ipod’ generation, the mancunian lads musical direction is a concoction of everything.

‘A dollop of old school ska and dancehall, a generous twist of indie, a light splash of reggae, and garnished with a subtle flavoring of 80’s electro pop’.

Our House is Dadless is the 1st single from their debut album “IT WAS EITHER THIS OR FOOTBALL - 1st Half” and contains some of the

funniest lyrics ever. Sampling one of the greatest songs of the 80’s by Madness, this is an upbeat quirky number which will help beat the recession blues.

The sky is the limit for Kid British if their debut album is anything to go by. Being compared to Mike Skinner and Lily Allen for their grasp on youth culture, they are conscious of not being pigeon holed.

Girls love em, guys want to be their mates and hang out with them, Kid British seem to have a very down to earth nature which is quite refereshing in the already cluttered UK music scene. www.iamkidbritish.com

WALE Adeyemi Urban street wear in the 80’s and early 90’s was monopolised by American designers such as Phat Farm, FUBU, Timberland and Echo.

Noticing the void in the market for a UK interpretion of streetwear, Wale Adeyemi embarked on a mission to use his surroundings as influence for his designs. Wale has not looked back since and he has become one of Britain’s key innovators of urban street fashion.

Adeyemi graduated from the Thurrock Technical College, he went on to further his studies at the Kent Institute of Art & Design.

As well as creating his B-side collection (titled “Somewhere Between the Kerb and the Boutique”), celebrities he has clothed include Ms. Dynamite, June Sarpong, Alicia Keys, Mos Def, Reggie Yates, Beyoncé, Amerie, Charlotte Church, Missy Elliott, and David Beckham.

Wale was presented the Fashion and Design Award at the MultiCultural Awards in 2001. He also received an accolade at the Urban Music Seminar a year earlier, and has recently become an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.

Despite all his accolades and achievements, Wale remains down to earth and grounded. He is all for nuturing young design talent and continues to influence the next generation. www.b-sidebywale.com

s an unignorable feature of menswear for this season. With Jarvis Cocker flying the flag for this eccentric fabric since blundering into the spotlight at the height of Brit pop, and every other boy/girl/man and woman in East London waltzing past in at least one tweed item it is firmly established that everyone should own at least one tweed staple to get them through the transitional stages of Autumn to Winter.

For your recession friendly fix of this finely chosen trend, meander down to Spitalfields market on a Sunday. Peruse the stalls at your leisure and you are sure to stumble across at least 5 stalls of tweed delights. style It’s back to school for kids and back to school for menswear by the looks of things, scholastic fashion is growing and looking to be this seasons next big trend.

The look has a relaxed, Americana vibe consisting of lettered baseball jackets and collegic knitwear, along with plaid shirts and turned up denims or chinos. Franklin & Marshall shows us a lesson in studious chic with ‘cool’ varsity jackets whilst Mishka’s cable knit jumper £80 hits the nail on the head.

The typically British private school look, a la Harry Potter would be blazers and tweeds which would be your staple here, the devil is in the detail; look out for emblems and crests. Ralph Lauren’s striped crested blazer is spot on. Though if you want the genuine article, you can very often find old school blazers in local charity or vintage shops.

So gentlemen its time to swot up on your style, get this look right and you’ll be the coolest guy on campus.

MR HUDSON How the act is packaged is more relevant these days than the music being made, the UK is renowed for inspiring and producing leaders of the pack when it comes to style. From the Beatles to Led Zeplin, style has always played a major part in music and in the class of 2009, Mr Hudson is ticking all the boxes.

Mr Hudson is an adventurer of sorts fashion wise. He combines English heritage style with relaxed pieces, like he just rolled out of bed. His laid back black blazer, t-shirt and trouser combo make him stand out in a crowd. Let’s face it, Mr Hudson has a penchant for always looking cool.

His style’s subtle, but not shy or retiring either. It’s classic but far from being retro. the minimalist approach to assembling outfits together can be noticed in the “SUPERNOVA” video where he is looking rather effortlessly chic. Hudson’s style is definitely fashion forward playboy fusing post modernism and Old classics.

The latest collaboration with Jay-Z titled ‘Forever Young’ is set to be a massive hit, signed to Kanye West’s label the rising star has already worked with some of hip hop’s biggest names - so watch this space. WWIT salutes you!

HURWUNDEKI Have you ever took a wrong turn and stumble across a few hidden gems in london? Well, I accidently discovered Hurwundeki when walking through busy Carnaby street and attempting to make a short cut I ended up on a quite cobble street road, that’s relatively hidden from the chaos. The blacked out store front and clever windows were interesting enough to draw me inside.The vintage decor as well as the merchandising really serves the products well, and the whole atmosphere feels like a genuine boutique with a sense of discovery at each corner turned.

Menswear as well as womenswear garments are laid out neatly across one side of the store, I was even more surprised to find out the price range for most of the products are quite affordable, it’s now become one of my favourite stores to go to when i’m looking for that something a little bit extra and unique. At least I know half of Oxford street won’t be wearing the same thing as me.

Decadently Dischevelled

he look of detached elegance has always been a menswear favourite, and there is no better way of seeming uncaring about your appearance than having the hair of a man that - appears - to have walked backwards through some sort of thorn bush.

GROOMING

POLISH OFF

We’re all feeling a little frazzled from our bulimic sun diet after this particularly sporadic British summer. And so with the dawn of September rises the need to destroy the evidence of attempted tans and achieved sun damage, whilst replacing it with a polished veneer that is both refreshed and glowing. BY LUCY SWAN

T

he easiest place to start [and the quickest route to looking fresh] would be the hair. If you are not quite in the frame of mind it takes to ask a barber for a trim that speaks from within, then an enriching conditioner and change of routine will work wonders. The ‘Aussie 3 Minute Miracle’ is a conditioner that will leave you with a head of virgin hair, just waiting to be touched, whilst smelling sublime.

OR if you are in the midst of a bold streak, put some money aside and allow professionals to bring your hair back from the brink of destruction and a beige existence. Taylor and Taylor on Commercial Road [right near Spitalfields and Brick Lane] are more than trustworthy with your hair in their hands. And with such tempting shopping delights around the corner, maybe [if your not feeling too guilty about the coins left in the stylists hand] you could select a couple of bargains to carry you through the seasons.

A refreshed hairstyle is quite literally the first step to looking marvellous. Once your hair is shiny again, it’s time to scrub down your skin. Exfoliating products

line the shelves at almost any chemist themed shop, but the most effective way to rid yourself of the withering tan, would be to invest in some exfoliating gloves. [yes you may well have seen them in the shower after your sister/girlfriend/ mum has been in there, but that’s becasue they work!] They cost literally 89p from Asda’s toiletry aisle, and leave you with tingling skin after every use.

Once the old skin is gone, you will need to preserve the fresh layer. No.7’s ‘Protect and Perfect’ is the new buzz word for skin care, and not for no reason, very rarely is there smoke without fire and this is not one of those minority situations.

Don’t be put off by the packaging, it’s all the same stuff just packed into different containers, so if you can get over the initial feminine aesthetic of the packaging, you’ll soon feel the difference after 3 weeks from your first application: softer, more youthful feeling skin will emerge with the aid of good cleansing routine and adequate hydration. You won’t be the only person to appreciate the changes!

And so you should be feeling rejuvenated by the end of this small [slightly expensive routine]. Expenses aside [said the MP!] your health will benefit from looking after your skin post-sun. AND if you don’t want to buy into the skin care trends, then try drinking more water, if you can stomach 2.5 litres a day your skin will be glowing within a couple of weeks.

Well I have personally tried and tested it myself, what do ‘I’ think of it? It’s actually working for me, I’ve been looking for a product that will minimise the size of pores for a long time and since i’ve started using it [under two weeks] I have noticed significant improvement of the appearance of my skin.
