EDITOR’S LETTER COVER Photographer: Mariel Clayton, Room 7 - Success

EDITOR’S LETTER Welcome to the debut issue of PANDORA! Pandora, according to Greek mythology, was the first woman. Created from water and earth by the God’s, she was granted many gifts and talents, such as beauty, persuasiveness and generosity. She was also made to be very curious, so it was no surprise when she was given a box and told not to open it; she could not resist. She ended up releasing all the evils of mankind into the world, leaving only hope inside once she closed it again. Pandora magazine is a little box of its own, only we’ve got loads left inside it. Beauty, fashion, ambition, intelligence… there’s too much to mention. Mariel Clayton takes us inside the dark world of Barbie! Exploiting current issues through satire and her dry sense of humour. Also, who knew ordinary objects around the house would be your beauty saviours this summer? You won’t view anything in the same light again and hopefully will still have a few pennies left for those killer heals you’re after! So, here at Pandora, we know and understand the financial struggles you go through. This issue is dedicated to stretching that loan as far as you can! But fear not…there is not just hope left inside our box of tricks. These money saving alternatives work and that’s why they have such a central role in the issue. Cheap places in London, affordable fashion, unusual holidays, and bazaar yet money-making jobs – before you know it, you will be out of that cold and lonely overdraft and will be enjoying your summer! So use our Pandora’s box to help you think outside of it! Once it’s open, you won’t want to close it. From all the team… enjoy! Margaret Werner Editor

TELL IT AS IT IS

“You love it, you hate it, you can’t live without it” Our capital’s tube network is like that scapegoat you have in football. Fans will berate about his lacklustre skills but will feel his void when the team’s missing his services. That’s what the London Underground is.

You’re likely to find many tourist having However subpar the service provided to us by the TFL conversations (in their native tongue obviously) in a may be, we’re provided with so many unique experiences passionate and excited tone as they travel to London’s during every trip that I don’t think it’s bested by any many attractions. This laid back atmosphere lasts till other metro system. I’m a regular user of the tube, I use it around using the tube. They themselves will eventually be out 5 maybe 6 days a week. In fact even right now I’m on the populated by the return of the corporate, albeit a little Northbound Victoria Line train to Walthamstow Central bit scruffier crowd making their way home after a long typing up this piece on my iPhone. Their request will often fall on deaf ears even through their paper. Come lunchtime, the whole tube network takes on though it deserves otherwise. Once we get into the swing of the night the some sort of transformation. People are more laid back. 8 | PANDORA

TELL IT AS IT IS atmosphere becomes a little bit more eccentric. Passengers from a night out drinking or from London’s many arenas/venues will make use of the tube. With them being in an inebriated state their creativity and bravery increases tenfold. They’ll be screaming and shouting, attempting absurd stunts on the poles or aggressively challenging fellow passengers. While the more intoxicated passengers are busy being stuntmen, they won’t even realise the annoyed passengers coming home from a late shift at work. I started off by saying passengers will descend

into chaos at the first sign of a tube line being suspended. I think chaos was a little generous. What I should have said was anarchy. Forget people spearing others onto packed carriages in the attempt to get themselves on. No, things get way more desperate and barbaric when they can’t even get into the station to begin with. I was heading home after working a shift at The O2. My journey to work that day was already heavily hampered by the ever so unreliable Jubilee line. It wasn’t until I made my way home that I was informed that the whole line had been suspended. Having experienced this before I already knew I’d just jump on the 24 HOUR SERVICE to central London. However there were a good 15,000 others around with the majority unaware of this. They packed the pavements outside North Greenwich station so much that it spilled onto the road meaning the buses would have little if any room to maneuver. I stood there with my headphones in (note: you really do miss out on a lot of the occurrences on the underground by having your music blasting through your ears) while I was surrounded by a whole mass of people. It wasn’t until I took them off that I heard all the raging words oozing out of people’s gobs. Many complaints, some distressing pleas for information and others devising strategies on how to mount the bus when it eventually arrived. Well the bus came and everybody surged forward squashing those at the front against the red chassis of the Northbound 188 bus. In a desperate attempt to get on, somebody opened the back doors via the emergency button. As soon as that happened I saw a mass amount of passengers all jumping on, a lot with children who had to drag them through as if they were a sack of potatoes. I stood there with my jaw hanging low in shock while people around me rushed past me themselves targeting the same backdoors. I remained composed in my spot, as I knew I would eventually get home seeing as it was a 24-HOUR SERVICE. This same pattern continued for the next two buses that rolled past. The TFL staffs that were there with ‘incident response’ high vis jackets did

anything but respond to the various incidents which took place. After bus number 3 came fights broke out both on and off the bus. I stood there still shocked by the way things escalated from good to catastrophic in a matter of seconds. The police eventually came, however they themselves ended getting into arguments with a lot of the waiting passengers. By the time bus number 4 came along a woman walked in front of the bus WITH HER SON, in an attempt to stop it where she was standing so she could be guaranteed to get on. Yet more diabolical actions which I shook my head at. Well I eventually got on that bus and made my way through the capital and got home 3 hours later than expected. However it was an experience worth going through as I saw just how quickly people’s contagiously irrational decisions could escalate the most feeble scenarios. PANDORA | 9

LONDON

LONDON FOR CHEAP. NO, REALLY...

VICTORIA BROWN

The Royal wedding in April gave Londoners all over the city a cheap day out and it got us here at PANDORA thinking. What else is there to do in this lovely capital of ours that won’t rob us all of our much needed student loans?

Beauty on a Budget ‘It is a hobby of mine to have an exact knowledge of London’

- Sherlock Holmes

Free TV Tickets Visit Applause Store and register for free tickets to recordings of TV shows at the BBC and ITV studios. You’re not always guaranteed a ticket, as it’s on a first come first served basis. If you do manage to bag yourself some tickets, that’s a fun night out for you and some mates, all for the cost of a travel card and something to eat and drink. Remember to get your mates to sign up as well, as each person is limited to four tickets. For more information and to register your interest for your favourite shows, visit applausestore.com

Shisha Dens Why not head to any one of the many Shisha or Hookah bars that are popping up all over London. The Shisha Bar located in the Stables Market in Camden is a great starting point. From about £8 per pipe, you can chill out with a group of friends and enjoy the many flavours of tobacco on offer, all in a cosy, Moroccan themed setting. There are no toilets, which isn’t great and there are certainly more lavish Shisha Dens in the capital but for a first attempt at something unusual with a buzzing atmosphere, there is simply nothing better! 10 | PANDORA

We all know how hard it can be keeping on top of our beauty regimen on a student budget. However, the Esthetique Salon on Margaret Street W1, promises an end to this problem. The salon is part of the London School of Beauty and the treatments are provided by the students as part of their training. All the treatments are carried out under the supervision of the teachers and assessors. Since the treatments are carried out by the pupils, the prices are incredibly low, so it’s an ideal venue to treat yourself regularly. Visit lond-est.com to book an appointment.

Go to a Gig! The Windmill Do you love going to music gigs but hate the dent it leaves in your bank balance? Well for a really affordable night out, head to The Windmill (22 Blenheim Gardens) in Brixton Hill, for some great live entertainment. Its obviously not going to be the big names you’re used to at more expensive gigs, but it’s a great way to see some new bands that might hit the big time! And for a fiver a ticket, it’s better than a night in on your own! To register interest, check out upcoming shows or to see how you’re band could perform there, visit windmillbrixton.co.uk

Watch some footie We know what you’re thinking! Football? Watch? Me? But London’s non-league teams are multiplying faster than you can say ‘footie fittie’. Not only is it a great way to meet new people, but it

LONDON also offers a very valid reason to watch 22 men in their shorts! We’re not saying that they’re all going to be Adonis’, but it’s something different to do for an afternoon. To show off a bit of your pride and passion, you’ll need to shell out no more than £10 a ticket. Now, we’re off to find a hottie to explain the offside rule to us!

Hackney Farm To experience a bit of the rural countryside in the heart of the East End, you need to jump on the Central line and head to Bethnal Green. There are plenty of animals to see from calves and donkeys to goats and sheep. It’s completely free admission as it is charity run, but donations are always welcome! A map costs £1 and with that, you then have a self-guided tour of the farm in your hands. The farm is open Tuesday to Sunday and bank holiday Mondays. Tour the BBC The BBC actually offer an award winning, behind-thescenes tour of some of the various sows they record every day at the studios based in Wood Lane. The tours generally include a sneaky peek at BBC news and the other interactive studios housed there. This is a great thing to do for any student studying broadcasting or journalism, or if you’re just curious as to what the BBC are spending your TV license money on. Nearest transport link is going to be White City which is located directly opposite the studios. The tours are free, so to arrange a visit, go to bbc.co.uk/tours

Namco Station For the big kid in all of us, there is Namco Station, the indoor entertainment centre to outdo all others. Located next to the London Eye, it houses 12 bowling alleys, US sized pool tables, dodgems and over 150 interactive arcade games. If that wasn’t enough, there is also a fully licensed bar, so it will basically be like your SU bar with an arcade attached. Open until midnight and with free admission, Namco Station should definitely be on a student’s to-do list. The chance to head down to the Southbank and behave like a kid again? What’s not to love?

CULTURE

AROUND THE WORLD KENDRA SAULAN

Keep these other gesture rules in mind when traveling in other countries to prevent confusion and keep the peace, you tourist! The Okay Sign- Want to signal to someone you’ve met on holiday how all right, fine, and generally okay things are? Stop! Beware of making the round “okay” sign with your thumb and forefinger. In Greece and Turkey, this gesture can be taken as highly vulgar. You are telling someone that they resemble a similarly shaped part of the human body and, by extension, that they are homosexual. In some Middle Eastern countries, such as Kuwait, the okay sign signifies the evil eye. Pointing- Is this the way to your famous shrine/ mosque/temple? Be careful how you ask such questions when travelling. Pointing with your finger is rude in so many countries it’s probably wise just to abandon the gesture altogether overseas. Use an open hand instead to indicate direction. Slurping- Slurping your soup might be a no-no at your average dinner table but in Japan, it is considered good table manners. Slurping indicates you’re enjoying the meal. Photo Taking- It’s easy enough to be offended in your own country by tourists snapping your photo without permission. On other occasions, you might be that intrusive tourist yourself. But the offence can go much further in certain African countries, such as in rural Ghana, where people might fear that by photographing them you are stealing their soul.

and gestures mean different things in different countries. What is considered a cool sign may be a grave insult in another country. In most countries, the simple ‘thumbs up’ sign is perfectly acceptable and widely understood as ‘well done’, or ‘good job’. However in Bangladesh, Iran, and Thailand, did you know it is traditionally seen as an obscure gesture? For Australians, they find it amusing when Americans say they are rooting for them root in Australia means to have sex!

Wait, you did what? Embarrassing international stories! From Mirjam: I went to Australia last year. I was travelling with a Canadian friend. In Australia they call sandals “thongs”. We came to a pub where it said on the door: ‘No thongs allowed’. My Canadian friend was very surprised, she didn’t understand how they could know what underwear the people are wearing. From Nikki Canales: I do have a funny story from a friend of mine who traveled from the US to the UK. When she got off the plane, she stepped in some mud and got her jeans dirty. When she met the people she was staying with, she said “I apologize.. my pants are dirty.” They gave her a funny look. Later, she found out “pants” is actually “underwear” in the UK and they mistakenly thought she was talking about “knickers.” From Adam: When I first arrived in the US from Britain I was sitting in a bar with some new American friends; I choked on my drink when I heard one of the girls announce that she had been riding her bicycle too much that day and now her “fanny really hurt”!

VICTORIA BROWN

or a lot of students, a true rite of passage upon completion of their course is to pack up their things and see a bit of the world. It is normally the last time a student can head off into the unknown before they become tangled in full time jobs and paying off the dreaded student loans AND overdrafts. Well in a bid to do our bit and help out you overworked uni students, PANDORA has come up with a couple ideas to help you get away and see some of the world, whilst hopefully not having to spend all of your hard saved-for pennies.

SAFETY FIRST If you’re going travelling in a foreign country where you don’t know the area or the people, you need to play it safe! - Plan your trip well in advance. - Visit your GP before you go to ensure you have had all the necessary immunisations you will need (where you are going will dictate the jabs you’ll need). - Pack a First Aid kit and take it with you wherever you go. - Invest in some travel guides that can highlight any health problems associated with the areas you are intending to travel to. - Avoid drinking any unbottled water, having ice in your drinks or eating salads, as the water in underdeveloped countries can lead to other health problems whilst abroad. - Arrange to contact friends and family at least once a week. If calling is too expensive, make use of social networking sites like Facebook. - And lastly, always trust your instincts. PANDORA | 13

Club Monterrey Aparthotel

Surrounded by lush gardens, Club Monterrey Aparthotel offers guests the perfect opportunity for relaxing walks or restful picnics, whilst admiring the breathtaking San Antonio Bay views. This accomodation offers a range of amenities and facilities within a warm friendly atmosphere, which is in a close proximity of the beautiful sandy beach of Punta Pinet only 450m away . However, the fabulous resort is only 3km away from San Antonio where holidaymakers can find a fine array of great street cafes, restaurants, shopping and very lively nightlife perfect for the girls to get their faces on and have a good night!. The Club Monterrey is ideal to turn your holiday dreams into memories. Where else can you find a 5 night half board deal to Ibiza for under £200!? This holiday is perfect for a group of girls who want to get away, laze around the pool and get a tan by day and party it up by night. How can you go wrong!? Icelolly.com is the website that offers this unmissable holiday package at an incredibly low price, so get yourselves involved! From London Stansted to San Antonio, Ibiza, Spain 28th June 2011 Half Board for 5 nights Only £199

Last Minute Holidays One of the best ways to guarantee a great holiday at an incredibly low price is to book it last minute. Being young is all about being spontaneous, whether it’s organizing a night out or a halls party. So, if you have the money at hand why not take your carefree element and apply it to booking a holiday. Although the height of the summer will be found in the middle of July and August, that is when peak prices come out to play . A very easy solution to paying extortionate prices is to book a holiday in the Middle of April or at the beginning of September. Although you may think these are your cold months, mainstream holiday destinations such as Spain, Turkey and Egypt all offer a delightful amount of sun and tanning time, as well as paying half the price. So get down to your travel agents or get online and be a little impetuous. You’ll only thank yourself for it when you’re lying by the pool, cocktail in hand and knowing you’ve spent the least amount of money getting there.

Book in Advance The prospect of waiting months on end to jet away for some sun definitely sets off the impatient trigger. However, there are multiple reasons that booking a holiday in advance is the new, ‘in’ thing to do. The further away you book your holiday, the more time you have to pay it off, instead of paying a lump sum and really feeling the effects. Booking in advance enables you to pay it off bit by bit, even if its only £10 a month. We all know assignments and essays can be very monotonous, frustrating and tedious so why not give yourself a little more motivation by booking a holiday ahead of time. It will give you something to look forward to and make it all the more exciting knowing your summer plans are set in stone.

HOT SPOT

THE LUCY EXPERIENCE VICTORIA BROWN

If you’re into your vintage designer fashion, then you’re going to be all too aware of the kinds of price tags that accompany your tastes. A boutique in Covent Garden is claiming to be providing the antidote to this.

L

ucy in Disguise describes itself as ‘affordable luxury’. It claims to be able to perpetuate this oxymoron concept by offering customers not only the opportunity to purchase and own beautiful vintage pieces, but also the chance to rent pieces for a cheaper price tag. Lucy in Disguise is the brainchild of ‘retired’ pop star, Lily Allen and her sister, Sarah, who say their desire to bring affordable, vintage clothes ‘to the world’, stems from their own personal love of sourcing true vintage finds. From Biba to Ossie Clark, the rails and racks at Lucy in Disguise are stocked and replenished regularly, so you’re guaranteed to find something you love and there is always a reason to go back! On top of all the genuine vintage pieces available in-store, there is also the Lucy in Disguise range, a collection of vintage inspired clothes designed by Lily Allen herself. The range is obviously not as pricey as the actual vintage pieces and, therefore, offers yet another choice in the quest for value for money in the vintage market! Another string to Lucy’s bow is the ‘With Diamonds’ VIP room and the in-store salon. From between £10 and £30 per person, per hour, you and a group of friends can enjoy anything from a ‘roaring tea party’ complete with tea and biscuits, to ‘Kimberley’s cocktail hour’, where each person is provided with two cocktails! What you receive will

16 | PANDORA

vary depending on the type of package you choose. Each package will include a minimum £10 voucher and an assistant who will help you and your friends choose the perfect outfits for your night out. This can then be followed by a trip to the salon where you can have your hair styled and make-up professionally applied to ensure that you look a million dollars on your night out. Lucy in Disguise is already an unusual niche, in that it is the first high street store to offer customers the option to rent their stock. So what if your funds won’t stretch to owning that Lanvin quilted dress? For less money, you can still leave the shop, vintage classic in tow. It’s not cheap by many people’s standards and even less so by a student’s, but what is great about Lucy in Disguise is that it gives you the option. You’ll no doubt leave feeling and looking your best. For a special occasion; to celebrate a friend’s birthday or your approaching graduation perhaps, it is well worth putting money aside for. It’s not every day a girl gets to be treated like a princess and whilst Lucy in Disguise may not be offering the ‘affordable luxury’ they claim to be, they have certainly taken a vintage shoe step in the right direction!

MINNE MUZTUCCARI Have you heard?...

Right now I’m loving…

I have been utterly inspired by Jill Sander designing a range of her +J line for Uniqlo. The simplicity of the jackets mixed with a classic colour palette make them must-haves in any girls wardrobe! Its affordable so you can get that signature style of a great designer at a fraction of the normal cost! I love, love, love!

The bright coloured trend for Spring/Summer 2011. Designers like Christopher Kane have used hot pinks, burnt oranges and vibrant electric blues. For affordable versions, head to retailers like Zara who have a great range of block colour Chinos!

The Minne Mutztuccari Range

Have you seen the vile banana print by Prada? I absolutely hate it! I’m not sure what the big deal is with fruit print right now, but I hope its not here to stay!

I love women who embrace their figure so, my current women’s wear range has an emphasis on femininity. I’ve achieved this through the cut, colour and detailing of my pieces. I’ve made use of fringing, studs and pleats as subtle features for crop tops and simply cut dresses.

D

esigner Minne Muztuccari lifts the lid on her box of tricks for fashion this season!

What I’m currently working on…

I’ve been so, so, busy working on a line of evening dresses for my new 2011/12 Autumn/Winter collection. I’ll be making use of lots of nude colours, they are bang on trend right now, and they are sure to stay with us onto Autumn and Winter. I’ll be mixing my designs with standout pieces created from bottle green silks and chiffons. The whole line will be very effeminate and elegant, because us girls should flaunt what we’ve got!

But I’m hating…

Attention Ladies! Dress your men in the MM Range!

My menswear is a reflection of style versus comfort, because of course we want our men to look good but we still want them to feel good aswell! I’ve mixed beautifully constructed slim-line trousers with heavy weight jerseys to achieve that smart casual look. Minne’s Must-have!

For me, this season, I just cannot do without a peep-toe wedge! I particularly love the wicker soles. They epitomise summer and they are bang on trend for the season. Wear with skinny jeans for daywear or with a beautiful maxi for an elegant evening outfit.

San tropez self tanning mousse- £30, Marc Jacobs Daisy eau de parfum - £50, No.7 Lift and Luminate Night Cream - £22, knowing what to do with them…priceless! We all know theres certain things that make us look and feel better. The problem is, if you don’t use them correctly, they’re not going to work! Using the best and most expensive products wont make a difference if they aren’t used properly! Here is the ‘how to’ guide that every girl should know about!

Moisturisers!

Self Tan – The do’s!

Hydrate yourself! Serum – designed to be worn under a moisturiser, it is intense and conditions the skin. Day Moisturiser – it’s main function is to hydrate the skin throughout the day. For best results, find the one that suits your skin type. Those containing SPF protect your skin from UV damage and every little counts! Prevention is the key! Night Cream – the most rejuvenating period for your skin is as you sleep, so make sure you purchase a decent night cream for good results.

Smooth Finish To get that flawless, smooth finish after applying make up, always wear a primer! Layering more and more foundation on will leave the skin looking thick and leathery. A primer is a conditioning base that preps the skin ready for foundation, giving it a soft and smooth look and ensuring the make up stays on longer. 24 | PANDORA

When it comes to tanning – don’t cut corners!! Exfoliation is a must; not only does it leave you silky smooth, it helps the colour to last longer. Make sure you use a tanning mitt – stopping the tan from staining your hands, it helps you spread the tan evenly, even on elbows, knees and heels. Start at your feet and work your way up. Use long, sweeping strokes and use lots of the product to make sure you don’t end up patchy! When the mitts come off… rub the back of your hands across your bottom, it tans your hands evenly without leaving visible lines!

Eau De Cologne, Toilette or Parfum? For those of you who don’t know, the difference is in the concentration of the fragrance. Eau de cologne is the lightest with an average 3% compound, while eau de toilette can be anything between 3 and 8%. Eau de parfum is the strongest with between 10 and 15% compound. Eau de toilette is the more popular due to being cheaper than the parfum, however in the long run the parfum lasts longer as you don’t have to use as much! An extra hint, use the body lotion version of the fragrance along side it to make the fragrance last all night, and all over!

TO hell with wrinkles! At the age of 19 it’s depressing to be worrying about wrinkles, but they are real and they are on their way!! Start with prevension... Botox – the effects are temporary and only last a few months. It reduces the movement of the muscle beneath the skin and works best on wrinkles and creases across the forehead and around the eyes. Fillers – these are used for the deeper set creases. As well as reducing lines, fillers can enhance areas of the face such as cheekbones, and to fill the lips. The results of Fillers last approximately 12 months. Results are always dependant on the skill of the practitioner. We have all seen the ones that went wrong! Make sure you research who is going to perform the injections and make sure they are qualified. Have any beauty advice you’d like to share with Katherine? Email pandora.mag@gmail.com

BAKING SODA FOR YOUR BEAUTY REGIME? ‘SO-DAAA!’ Your Nan uses it for baking your favourite cakes, but who knew that Baking Soda had so many other uses? We’ve found three more beautifying reasons why you should always keep some close at hand.

Hair Sprinkling a tablespoon of baking soda into a bottle of your everyday shampoo will ensure that any build-up from the hair products you use will be easily washed away with the suds!

Skin Combining ¾ of a tablespoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water, a nourishing face exfoliator can be produced. Rub in circular motions with a moisturising mitten to remove dead skin cells and rejuvenate tired skin! Perfect after a heavy night out!

Scent Now don’t let this one gross you out, but substituting baking soda for your normal deodorant is actually far more hygienic than you would think. By rubbing baking soda on your underarms, you will be absorbing sweat as opposed to masking the smell it creates. This is great as we all know how unsightly and embarrassing sweat patches are. Why not try combining the two in a two-pronged attack against sweating! PANDORA | 25

ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY The secret powers of the products you have lying around...

As any female student will know, it can be hard being a girl on a student’s budget! Buying those essentials, leading a busy social life and making sure we look good can create a big strain on our funds and can sometimes mean going without the basics (go out tonight and not eat for a week, or stay in? Hmmm…). Well fear no more! Here are a few examples of ordinary household food products that are all bound to be lying around that you can use to beautify yourself AND save money! Win-win or what!

LEMON JUICE

CORNSTARCH

For those of who want to try DIY highlights, you can’t go wrong with Lemon juice! Combine the juice of half a lemon with a dollop of leave in conditioner, apply, comb through, wash out. Voila! Natural looking highlights in minutes! Meaning more time for you at the bar, Lemon martini anyone?

Cornstarch is amazingly absorbent. It can be used as a cheap baby powder substitute and for freshening up the smell of certain objects (flatmate with smelly trainers anyone?) Mix some cornstarch with an herb you like the smell of and blitz together in a food processor. Transfer into a shaker container and there you have your own freshener!

OIL

EGG WHITES

BAKING SODA

Using any kind of oil on your skin as a moisturiser is a great way of taking care of your skin whilst not breaking the bank! It’s true that if you’re a bit over-zealous, you can end up smelling like a bowl of pesto, but used sparingly it can provide great skin care at a fraction of the cost of shop bought moisturisers! Experiment with Sesame, Almond, Peanut or Argan oil!

Next time you have a few eggs lying around, forget the omelette, whisk yourself up a face mask! Using the white of just one beaten egg, cover your entire face and allow to set! Once dry, wash off! Your skin will feel and look visibly firmer! At least you’ll be able to look back on those uni pics in years to come, without the treat of sagging chin skin!

Drinking alcohol and smoking can lead to major staining of your teeth! A great way of giving your teeth a gentle whitening, is to mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a quarter teaspoon of Hydrogen Peroxide (which you can get from chemists or hairdressing supply shops). Give your teeth a scrub and see the difference! (Check out page 25 for other secretly amazing uses for baking soda)

BEAUTY

COFFEE Coffee can be used as a great exfoliant or as a way to get rid of cellulite! Simply apply to your face or any problem areas you have on your body and then wash off! The coffee could be a little troublesome for people with sensitive skin! If this is the case for you, simply mix in with your existing moisturiser!

OATS There’s no denying that oats make for good porridge but they also make for an amazing face wash! Mix together equal measures of honey and lemon juice. Then add porridge oats until a paste is formed. Apply to your face and wash off with warm water. Oats sooth the skin and ease redness so its perfect for calming any annoying spots you may have!

HONEY Mix half a jar of honey, a scoop of brown sugar and half of a vanilla bean. Keep this in the shower and use once a week for luxurious body scrub that will leave your skin feeling and smelling amazing! A great cheap alternative to the extortionate scrubs offered on the highstreet!

VINEGAR It’s not just for putting on your chips! Using white or Cider Vinegar on your hair a couple times a month will improve silkiness and shine, ridding you of any build-up from shampoos, conditioners and other hair products! Now, you wouldn’t get that at Toni & Guy for the price of a bottle of Sarsons!

TEA BAGS A cup of tea is a great way to greet that dreaded hangover but once you’ve drained those last dregs, use the teabags to reduce the redness and puffiness that a hangover or lack of sleep is sure to bring! Apply over closed eyes and chill out for about five minutes for a noticeable difference!

ORDINARY OBJECTS, EXTRAORDINARY USES BUTTONS

RUBBER BANDS

DRYER SHEETS

How annoying is it when you’re trying to get ready for a night out but you can only find one of your favourite pair of earrings! Well, how about using an old button with at least two thread holes as a unique way to keep your earrings in their pairs. Try it and we promise; you’ll never have this problem again!

If you’ve been hitting the SU bar and the kebabs shops a bit heavy lately, an expanding waistline is inevitable! Use a rubber band through the buttonhole of your jeans or trousers to accommodate yourself a little extra room until you have the time to hit the gym (or just go without food!).

If your hair is in dire need of a wash, but you just haven’t got the time, try using scented tumble dryer sheets. Just rub on the roots of your hair to reduce frizz, tame fly-aways and leave your hair smelling fresh! Leaving you more time at the SU bar!!

CLEAR SELOTAPE

TOOTHPASTE

FACIAL TONER

Have you got chapped, flaky lips? Try applying some Vaseline to the affected area. Leave to soak in, and then apply a piece of clear selotape. Peel off and you will see it has quickly removed any unsightly flakes. You’ll have yourself a perfect pout in no time!

What to do with yellowing nails? Head to the nail salon? Nope! Far too expensive! Instead, mix some toothpaste with some lemon juice (Nature’s bleach, remember!) and scrub onto nails. It’ll leave your nails sparkling and shiny in no time

If you happen to make an error when applying your fake tan, don’t freak out! Using an alcohol-based remover can get rid of or correct any embarrassing splotches and streaks!

EYEBROW BRUSH

PETROLEUM JELLY

NAIL VARNISH

If you’ve got that allimportant interview for that internship you need but your outfit is covered in fluff, a lint remover is what you need! If you haven’t got a lint remover, however, the next best thing is an eyebrow brush! Use in the same way you would a lint remover to remove any fuzz and you’ll be ready for that interview in no time!

Getting blisters from those gorgeous new shoes you’ve just bought? Well apply some petroleum jelly (that’s Vaseline to you or me) to the affected area and it should put a halt to any new blisters forming. Also, try applying to your nails beds prior to putting on nail varnish. This will help easily remove any excess varnish if you make a mistake!

Nail varnish is great for troublesome threads in your clothes that pull and create holes. Apply some varnish to the affected area to stop any further pulling. Also, apply some to the bottom of metal cans in the bathroom to prevent rust rings forming on the bath! Because rust is just not a good enough reason to lose your rent deposit!

SOCIAL NETWORKING

VICTORIA BROWN

DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHO YOU ARE TALKING TO?

A

couple of weeks ago Channel 4 aired a docudrama titled ‘Catfish’, about the potentially sinister underworld of social networking such like Facebook. Now I, like many millions of other people, have a Facebook account. When it comes to the safety of the information provided on my profile, I have to admit, I’m a bit of a stickler for privacy. I always ensure I have the highest level of security selected in the options section of the website and I NEVER accept friend requests from people I do not know. At times, I have questioned whether I am being paranoid when it comes to the levels of security I practice, but now, having watched ‘Catfish’, it seems I’ve had the right idea all along. Now if you have intentions to watch ‘Catfish’, you may want to skip this part - it contains some spoilers! The premise of ‘Catfish‘ is a documentary following the social goings on of a young photographer (Nev Schulman), who accepts a friend request from a young girl, allegedly a big fan of his work (he is a photographer). Following on from his acceptance of this young girl’s friend request, he begins receiving gifts from the girl

THE CATFISH THEORY “They used to tank cod from Alaska all the way to China. They’d keep them in vats in the ship. By the time the codfish reached China, the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with the idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them and the catfish will keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in life. And they keep you on your toes. They keep you guessing, they keep you thinking, they keep you fresh. And I thank god for the catfish because we would be droll, boring and dull if we didn’t have somebody nipping at our fin.” Catfish Documentary Channel 4

32 | PANDORA

as well as subsequent friend requests from her mother, sister, brother and even their friends. All the while this is going on, the sequence of events are being recorded by his friend (who coincidentally is a documentary film maker and happens to share an office with Nev). As the film continues, it transpires that all of the friend requests, the gifts even the various conversations he has had with these people have all been from one and the same person. In this instance, the person in question turns out to be a lonely old woman, who is making use of the numerous accounts and personas in order to act out her social and romantic fantasies. Whilst it is easy to feel an overwhelming sadness for the lady in question; the fact that her life is so lonely, she has had to fabricate these people and their stories in order to gain some attention is hugely upsetting, there is the other more alarming notion; the fact that this woman was able to operate these various personas for so long without being found out! It is a very worrying thought. In this instance the lady wasn’t a predatory perpetrator but what happens when this is not the case? Facebook and many other social networking sites have a lot to answer for in relation to this topic. Anyone can join Facebook without any checks being carried out as to the authenticity of the person creating the profiles. This means that anybody, from convicted criminals to the weirdo you would normally avoid on the street, can create an account, include only the information they want you to see and then casually ask you to ‘accept’ their request for friendship. And people will willingly, albeit it from a naïve point of view, accept these friendships, entitling this imperfect stranger to look at your their pictures, gain access to your contact details and become privy to what is going in on your everyday life. It is a fine prospect if it is your real friends that have access to this information but you wouldn’t walk up to a stranger on the street and allow them to look through your photo albums and personal diary. And yet, online, this kind of social exchange can be considered the norm?

WORLD WIDE WEB

And it is not just this that you have to worry about. By accepting that stranger’s friend request you could also be putting yourself at the mercy of cyber criminals. These people create fake profiles and once you have accepted their friend request, they will be looking to exploit you and make money off of your error of judgment. All a con artist will need if your name and DOB and a multitude of hell can be unleashed on important aspects of your character, such as your credit rating. Just by having basic information on you, a cyber criminal can take out credit cards and loans in your name and all without your knowledge. It is a frightening prospect! So in future, when you receive that friend request from an absolute stranger, rethink automatically clicking the ‘accept’ button, because the chaos that may ensue from that tiny little click of a mouse may make you wish you had chosen to ‘ignore’.

HOW ABOUT… If you feel like using your Facebook account for good (grades) rather than evil, how about making use of the ‘Groups’ feature in order to get your group uni assignments completed. It’s a great way to post up work and ideas for your team project and allows you to gain fast effective feedback from the rest of the members! Facebook is already a great communication tool, so why not utilise it even further and let Facebook get you the grade you deserve!

When it goes wrong… Make sure the information on these group is correct – hand in dates and meeting times can be posted incorrectly, its not worth getting a late stamp on assignments because you relied on what was on Facebook! This is where the uni portals come into it.

NETWORK SOCIALLY, SAFELY Here is the ultimate guide to continuing to socially network and remain safe at the same time. 1. Don’t post up personal information. Things like your mobile phone number are a big no-no. Apart from anything, your number could be taken and you can become a victim of phone scams and cold calling. 2. If you have people on your friend’s list whom you are not totally familiar with, refrain from listing identifiable information such as your DOB or pictures that easily highlight your home, uni or work place. 3. Create usernames that do not include personal information. It is particularly a bad idea to form usernames using your name and DOB. You’re providing cyber criminals with two lucrative pieces of information in one go. 4. Create an email account that does not contain any

distinguishing information to register and receive mail from sites or social networking profiles. This way, if you ever wish to deactivate any of your accounts, you can simply discontinue using that email account. 5. Create strong passwords that contain upper and lower case letters and numbers. 6. Keep your profile ‘closed’, on the highest level of security there is and only allow your friends and the people you know to view it. Also make sure you keep an eye on updates of privacy settings as they can alter your profile, showing information that you previously did not have on show. 7. Whatever you put online, stays online, so don’t post anything that could cause you embarrassment down the line.

LYING

THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS... Everybody lies. don’t they? VICTORIA BROWN

34 | PANDORA

LYING

Y

es, it’s true. The answer to this very sticky matter is that almost everybody lies. But there is a very big difference between the little white lies we employ to get ourselves through the day (Boss: ‘I take it you’ve finished that report I asked for?’ You: ‘Of course Sir, just making my final checks…’) and the great big stonking ones that are going to end up hurting someone. No one enjoys being lied to, so PANDORA have set about finding the most basic signs that someone close to you isn’t being as truthful as they should be. Look at it as your guide to cutting the bullshit, or, alternatively, as a great way of perfecting your lying technique…

Liars can’t look you in the eye This is usually a glaring signal that the person you’re talking to is lying. If they do not seem to be able to maintain eye contact, you need to question the integrity of the information they are giving you. Because this tell is fairly well known about, too much eye contact can be just as condemning. The person in question is aware a lack of eye contact can be construed as a symptom of lying, therefore they may try and hold your gaze for extended periods in a bid to counteract this. When telling a story - looking to the left = a lie, looking to the right = remembering!

Liars clamp their lips Liars are very ‘hands on’ Another sure-fire sign that someone is being economical with the truth is that they will frequently touch their face, throat and neck. They will also frequently touch their nose or behind their ear. This seems to be a subconscious effort to stifle the lie and physically block it from leaving their lips. When someone is lying they will most likely not be touching their chest or their heart with an open hand.

Liars are uptight Whether this is a conscious effort on the part of the liar, or whether they are just scared of all those lies spilling out, a liar will normally appear very uptight. Spectators may misconstrue this as the person in question trying to project a persona of confidence and forthrightness but if you look closer, it is actually the pressure physically manifesting itself within the liar. Look out for tensed upper body stances, lack of facial expressions that looks ultimately unnatural and unwavering.

This is a huge tell when it comes to working out if someone is lying. Liars will quite often purse or clamp their lips whilst they are telling you their ‘version’ of events. This is again linked to the liars need to either prevent the lie from coming out or if they are being intensely questioned, to create a blockade between themselves and any more invasive questions they may be forced to answer!

Liars aren’t so great at faking iT When someone is lying, they’re facial expressions will fail to reach their entire face, particularly their eyes. If someone is being genuine with information or with a physical response, their reaction will be evident within their whole expression. Look out for a smile or frown that does not meet the eyes. It is a vain attempt at trying to convey the emotions they should be feeling whether that is happiness or indignation at their integrity being challenged.

MARIEL CLAYTON ‘Barbie is one of the most iconic childrens toys available - nearly everybody in modern society recognises her image and her ‘brand’ and has some sort of opinion of her, good or bad.’

M

ariel Clayton is someone PANDORA readers should know about. Her controversial images provide a magnifying glass into some of the social issues that waver around her social consciousness; the issues that we know exist but probably don’t pay much attention to. Her ‘Bad Barbie’ photo series is a blatant example of this and highlights the twisted logic of Mother’s buying Barbie’s for their young daughters to play with despite her unrealistic and unattainable assets. ‘You can’t get to be Barbie without an ocean’s worth of peroxide, 27 plastic surgeries and a complete lack of intelligence’, Clayton says, and with good cause. Every day the youth of today are bombarded with images

that detract from their worth and make them feel that to be successful, they need to look a certain way. This series of photos challenge that way of thinking. Now these are obviously not going to be the kind of images of Barbie you are going to run out and show to any eight-year-old girl. The concepts and content are dark and a little sinister but with them, Mariel Clayton is challenging a very real, very persistent, issue within modern society, and we at PANDORA love that! Mariel has kindly taken some time out of her busy schedule to answer some of our questions, allowing us an opportunity to gain further insight into her creative choices regarding the issues that are important to her.

INTERVIEW

I actually toyed with Medicine and had the idea of going into Neuro or Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, eventually though I settled on Journalism, and I think it’s still a career I could pursue, but with more of a bend towards photo-journalism naturally.

worked in a one-panel format. I think he influenced me in the way he composed his scenes, they show an exquisite mastery of subtle humour and detail. There is always the ‘main’ joke, that is sublimely delivered, but at the same time supported by so many hidden jabs and jests in the furthest corners of the frame. He was brilliant at knowing exactly when to go full out, cramming as much into a piece as possible, and when to keep it simple and elegant, yet impactful - it’s something I still aspire to. My other influence would be the editorial cartoonist Gary Trudeau, the creator of Doonesbury. I am really in awe of the way he addresses current social issues in a cartoon format, by using the visual to simplify the complex matters of the day and really put them in perspective. He really reminds me of what can be said with art.

Who or what have been your influences?

What are you working on right now?

I would say my main influences have actually been cartoonists, the most influential being Carl Giles ( who I’m sure you must have heard of being in London ) who

At the moment I am working on a series called ‘Twenty-Five Rooms’.. although that number may need to be inflated! I am forcing myself to work in a square

Did you know you wanted to be a photographer early on?

Nope, I had never given it much thought - the cost of photography and supplies was far too prohibitive when I was growing up, so it wasn’t even a hobby idea for me. When I did get my hands on little single-use cameras I really enjoyed myself, but I never even thought of turning it into something serious. If you hadn’t beCOME a photographer, WHAT WOULD you Liked To HAVE been?

INTERVIEW format, using a very limited amount of space to work in, compose a scene, tell a story etc. I started out with the intention of these pictures not being my traditional ‘funny’ work, with more of a slant towards commentary, but I’m afraid I can’t seem to separate my sense of humour from my work, so it’s teetering between the editorial and the satirical. I am really enjoying it, because I’m forced to think within a very narrow ( literally) set of parameters - and I really do find that it’s increasing my creativity enormously!

because I am quite proud of a few pieces throughout my themes. Now with ‘Twenty-Five Rooms’ and the way it’s developing, I think I am most proud of this series, it’s really coming together well, and I think it’s ( hopefully) showing what can be done with toys as a medium. Because the composition is so tight, I am forced to be spot-on each and every time with no mistakes, and so far I think it’s been successful. It’s also widened my creative mind as well, so I think these pieces are some of the most creative I’ve done.

Is there a particular collection of your work that you are most proud of? If so, why?

Some of your work could be deemed quite provocative. Do you purposefully set out to achieve this?

Before ‘Twenty-Five Rooms’ I would have said no,

‘I’m afraid I can’t seem to separate my sense of humour from my work’

Not really, I just do what I think is funny, and what I think other people may find funny. I don’t set out to shock or offend purposely, but I know that no matter what I do, some people will feel that way - so I will not modify my content because of that. Whether it’s deemed provocative or not, I will continue to compose pieces that I enjoy and that I think will make people laugh. Right: PMS Bottom: Put The Toilet Seat Down

Why the use of Barbie dolls? Is it the juxtaposition they create when featured in your photographs or is there another reason?

Barbie is one of the most iconic childrens toys available - nearly everybody in modern society recognises her image and her ‘brand’ and has some sort of opinion of her, good or bad. Using Barbie as the main character makes the images more impactful I think. Plus I also enjoy the contrast between the saccharine-sweet image of Barbie and the ‘wholesomeness’ she tries to represent, and the dark sadistic undertones that I have her portraying. I love the good/evil theme - and lets face it, as girls - didn’t we all know someone who was pretty on the outside, but mean on the inside? You’ve previously said that you ‘don’t like to be moralistic but some things you notice need to be processed in a different way’. Would you say that photography is a form of therapy for you?

Absolutely - there is definitely a creative catharsis going on whenever I’m putting something together.

Often when I hear about certain issues or news events or popular opinions, I feel an impotent rage that I as one person cannot really do anything about it. So by putting my thoughts and feelings into my art, it’s a way of processing those feelings and putting them out there in a way which I hope is more poignant than just words. Pictures can be interpreted in so many ways, but hopefully the underlying message that I’m trying to convey will be consistent, and that is definitely therapeutic. If your photographs communicated one thing to the people who saw them, what would you want that one thing to be?

Think damnit. What do YOUR friends say about YOU?

I have no idea... and I’m a little scared to find out. I think the main consensus would be ‘Warped, but in a good way.’ PANDORA | 41

INTERVIEW Finally, what advice could you give to amateur photographers hoping to make it in the photography industry?

‘Pictures can be interpreted in so many ways, but hopefully the underlying message that I’m trying to convey will be consistent’

Be original. There are so many people out there taking pictures of the same damn thing in the same damn way, if I see one more wistful picture of a wistful girl staring wistfully into the distance with blown out highlights and a muted sepia or emerald overlay I am going to go bananas. Lots of people can take beautiful images, very few can take a picture that’s worth a thousand words - it’s something that I still strive for with every shot. Being original, and keeping my

ideas new and interesting is always something that drives me, especially in the era where attention spans are getting shorter. Photography is such an amazing medium and yet people can’t seem to get beyond using it to highlight themselves and their angst. If you can conceive of something new and really different, something that makes people stop and go “Wow, I have never seen that before... I want to see more of it.” then you automatically have a means to communicate, and that’s the key.

Yes, we would be afforded the rights to go around shamelessly preying on our next unsuspecting victim and there would be no consequences other than maybe a slap on the wrist, some clothes out on the lawn, and a few broken hearted Drones.

CUPCAKES

CUPCAKES, COOKIES, ICING & CREAM THE NEW FONDANT PHENOMENON VICTORIA BROWN

T

here are many reasons why people have fallen in love with cupcakes and cookies. The ratio of frosting to cake, the fact that you get your own personal decorations to enjoy and the very fun aspect of being able to eat them with your hands, it may even be the edible glitter! Another possible notion, is that nostalgia has a lot to do with it. I have already noted that cupcakes and cookies have been around a lot longer that their reputation and some people believe it is simply the marketing and advertising companies dressing up old favourites from our childhood, reinventing them for the masses to enjoy all over again. I can definitely still recollect the chocolate chip cookies my Nan used to make with me on a Sunday afternoon and the simpler cupcakes you could buy in the supermarket, with that singular dollop of white, pink or yellow icing. From this, you can see why these frosted fancies, produced en masse, have proved so successful! Then there is the social aspect that seems to fan fire to the cupcake/cookie heat. Because of the portion size and the fact that they’re perfect for eating with your hands, people find them good social condiments to the perfect get together. They encourage mingling and social interaction, which for anyone organising a soiree with friends, is a big plus. If the cakes are decorated elegantly they also add a talking point. A hostess can really make it the centerpiece of the event by providing a cake stand and creating a focal point. Perhaps the fact of the matter is that we all just love ‘trends’ and whether the next one is going to be brownies, pancakes, or perhaps a new idea (and not

A few years ago, companies such as the Hummingbird Bakery and Sprinkles were virtually unheard of. Fast forward three years and these kinds of companies are turning a huge profit because of this new cupcake craze. But just why has this trend for cupcakes and cookies blown up the way it has? These sweet treats have been around a lot longer than the hype for them has and yet, now, cupcakes are now the go-to, or rather the ‘bring-with’, party treat for gettogether’s, tea parties and baby showers. So just why are cupcakes and cookies now so… In Vogue? PANDORA Investigates. just a reinvented version of something we have all long had), it is hard to imagine that we won’t all just jump on to the bandwagon the way we have with cookies and cupcakes and all the food fads before it! Oh yes! They are the food of the moment and whilst our love affair with them looks set to continue for some time to come, there is no denying that cupcakes and cookies are most probably going to prove just as ephemeral in popularity as Krispy Kremes before it. Brides in two years time will be forced to look for inspiration elsewhere for the next cuisine craze they can serve up at their weddings and we, at PANDORA, can’t wait to see what the next culinary phenomenon will be! Now, anyone for a slice of brownie wedding cake?

NUTRITION

Nourished

KENDRA SAULAN

Student life doesn’t have to be a sluggish journey from class to class. There are currently 2.8 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and The England health survey report warns that, based on current trends, 34% of men and 29% of women will be considered obese by the end of 2011.

50 | PANDORA

I

t’s these shocking health facts that are putting our country in danger of becoming just another western country sick with illnesses, obesity, and abusing the NHS with problems that we could prevent and even cure by just changing our diet and lifestyle! We consume meals 3 times a day, every day- it is our universal life source. It’s time we start taking nutrition seriously if we want to, as a nation, live healthy, happy, and abundantly. It’s no shock that saturated fats, foods drenched in oil, and any food advertised on TV by a cartoon character is not what Mother Nature intended for us to consume - and It’s no wonder people are getting new cancers and diseases that didn’t exist 100 years ago. The food industry is messing with too many pesticides, herbicides, and preservatives that we don’t

NUTRITION fully understand enough to be puttingin everything and distributing out to people. Pesticides are chemicals sprayed on fruit and vegetables to ward off insects and animals from chowing down on the crops intended for human consumption. The truth is these chemicals don’t know when to stop killing. It gets in our bloodstream, our cells, and affects us in the way we function. These chemicals are not natural and it’s important to eliminate as many unnatural chemicals as possible from our diet. People are feeling run-down, depressed, and falling ill- but the best news? Our bodies are so affected by what we consume, but it’s not impossible to reverse any damage done and to change our lifestyle. It can be an easy fix! Even on a student budget, it is possible to eat good food that is inexpensive and will leave you feeling happy and able to focus on those last minute assignments for Uni. Eating quality food is essential, and real brain food comes from the earth in its untouched, natural form. Students can easily follow these nutrition tips to keep their body and brain healthy, and stay as focused as possible! 1. Try to cut out all processed foods. I’m an advocate for whole, unprocessed foods because the raw ingredients are real food- but once these ingredients get mixed together with thickening agents, corn syrup, blue #5 (what IS that? Food really shouldn’t be defined by it’s colour), artificial colours, and hydrogenated oils, these foods get altered beyond belief. They get changed so badly that the body has a difficult time recognizing them, and it causes all sorts of problems. Feeling tired? Cut out all those unrecognizable ingredients and your body will thank you as you glow from the inside out. 2. HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP (is not a healthy vegetable syrup) Compared to traditional sweeteners, high-fructose corn syrup costs less to make, is sweeter to the taste, and mixes more easily with other ingredients. Today, we consume nearly 28.6kg of it per person, per year in drinks and sweets, as well as in other products. Highfructose corn syrup is in many frozen foods. It gives bread an inviting, brown color and soft texture, so it’s also in whole-wheat bread, hamburger buns, and English muffins. It is in beer, bacon, spaghetti sauce, soft drinks, and even ketchup. Research is beginning to suggest that this liquid sweetener may upset the human metabolism, raising the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Researchers

say that high-fructose corn syrup’s chemical structure encourages overeating. It also seems to force the liver to pump more heart-threatening triglycerides into the bloodstream. In addition, fructose may zap your body’s reserves of chromium, a mineral important for healthy levels of cholesterol, insulin, and blood sugar. To spot fructose on a food label, look for the words “corn sweetener,” “corn syrup,” or “corn syrup solids” as well as “high-fructose corn syrup.” 3. Try superfoods! Superfoods are a special category of foods found in nature. By definition, they are calorie sparse and nutrient dense meaning they pack a lot of punch for their weight as far as goodness goes. They are superior sources of anti-oxidants and essential nutrients - nutrients we need but cannot make ourselves. Try adding some of the following superfoods to your diet: Goji Berries, Wheatgrass, Flax Oil, Spinach, Bananas, Yogurt, Almonds, Olive Oil, Salmon, Broccoli, Apples, Oranges and Green Tea. 4. Drink plenty of water - and cut out sugary drinks and too much cream. 5. Eat less salt Even if you don’t add salt to your food, you may still be eating too much. About three-quarters of the salt we eat is already in the food we buy, such as breakfast cereals, soups, breads and sauces. Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. Use food labels to help you cut down. More than 1.5g of salt per 100g means the food is high in salt. Adults and children over 11 should eat no more than 6g of salt a day. We all know the saying ‘It only takes 21 days to form a habit’. It’s true- and if you dedicate 21 days to a diet of colourful foods from the earth, I guarantee you will feel happier, healthier, and more focused so you can ace those finals!

Food advertised on TV by a cartoon character is not what Mother Nature intended for us to consume.

TEN WOMEN TO INSPIRE YOU VICTORIA BROWN

Here at PANDORA we are always looking for ways to inspire all our lovely readers. We bring you ten females who should of already inspired you in some way aswell as a couple you may not of heard of, but probably should of! Prepare to be inspired!

INSPIRATION Kate made our list of inspiring women because she actually achieved what every little girl dreams of doing, whilst they’re playing dress-up in school. She married the prince and became the princess. We here at PANDORA love that she has her own true-to-self style regarding fashion wears. Her style may not be to everyone’s taste but there is no denying that she looks good in whatever she wears. The day after her wedding she was pictured wearing a cornflower blue dress from Zara that retailed at £49.99. I say retailed in the past tense as the dress had sold out by the end of the day. There is even talk of a style of skirt being named after her, so you soon might be able to choose between the Mini, the Maxi or the Middleton! Kate Middleton is inspiring because she really is just like you or me and whilst not all of us are going to get our fairytale ending; marrying the prince and riding off into the sunset, she is still a great reminder that extraordinary things can happen to ordinary people and that that little princess in all of us should never give up hope!

sketchbooks, cups of tea and cosy blankets’. It is for this reason that the images she creates are heartwarming and cute. A real feast for the eyes. The concepts she comes up with are quirky. She makes use of lots of dogs and cats with kitsch little cardigans and pretty pink bows! They may not be to everyone’s taste but there is no denying her talent. Weckmann is inspiring because underneath the whole illustrator working in London, lies the story of how far she has come, literally and figuratively. She followed her dream to London, worked hard whilst studying and is now a true success story in the career path she has chosen to pursue. So often, we hear about students coming out of uni, having got themselves into debt, and how they have had trouble securing a job. Anke Weckmann is the antidote to these stories. She is hope for the student who has come through uni, worrying they may struggle after graduation. But this is not always the case and if you don’t believe us, just ask Anke! PANDORA | 53

INSPIRATION Every man wanted her and every woman wanted to be her. That is why Marilyn Monroe is one of PANDORA”s inspirational woman number seven. The American Film Institute ranked her number six in a poll for ‘The Greatest Female Star of All Time’ and even though she died prematurely at the age of 36, her star quality lives on through her films, her breath taking beauty and her infamous quotes. She once famously said, ‘a sex symbol is a thing. I just hate to be a thing’. Monroe found that typecasting, particularly in her early career, frequently meant she played the ‘dumb blonde’. She did not enjoy just being regarded as a pin-up and wanted to be taken seriously. In a bid to achieve this, she studied at The Actors Studio to broaden her range. Marilyn Monroe is inspirational to us at PANDORA because despite the fact that she met a tragic end, she never gave up; never gave up trying to be a better actress, never gave up trying to change people’s perceptions of her and she really never gave up on hoping that one day she would find someone to love her.

She once said, ‘a girl must be two things; classy and fabulous’, and whilst it can be difficult being both of these things, ALL the time, the female race have a whole lot to thank dear Coco for. She was most well known for her menswear inspired clothes designs and her modernist philosophies from which she spawned many inspiring quotes that still remain in relevant context for women today. The influence she held during her life and even after her death are celebrated by the fact that she was the only couturier to be included in Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century. PANDORA find Coco Chanel utterly inspiring due to the insight and creativity that emanated from her. The fashion world would not have been the same without her ground breaking, and what were at the time, very controversial designs. In January 1971, development of her Spring / Summer collection was in motion. On the 10th January, having been to oversee the developments of her line, Coco Chanel died doing what she loved. A true fashion designer until the end and someone to whom all women should be eternally thankful.

section title She can do it like a brother, she can do it like a dude! But it is not for this reason that Jesse has made our list! Jesse J (real name Jessica Cornish) is a feisty female and at PANDORA we believe every woman could use a little of what she’s got! Jesse signed to Island Records and began working on her debut album, ‘Who You Are’, in which she talks about the world’s obsession with materialism and about being true to oneself, a mantra that every female should live their lives by! She has a standout style that many other females would love to emulate, although not all of us could pull off a body suit with army boots! She has managed to achieve so much and all at the rather tender age of twenty-three years old. It begs the question that if she has achieved this much this early on in her career, what else is she capable of? That of course, all remains to be seen but we here at PANDORA are certain that Jesse will be appearing in articles and polls such as these and writing those hard hitting, thought-provoking lyrics for many years to come!

JESSIE J

BECKIE WILLIAMS Beckie Williams is again, someone you may not have heard of, but she is someone who is campaigning for equality for women. Namely, equality for the size of our breasts! She has brought to public attention the fact that certain department stores such as Marks and Spencer have policies where a £2 surcharge is added to the price of larger cup-size bras!

Beckie has gone as far as to purchase shares in Marks and Spencer’s so that she is entitled to discuss this backward, biased policy at the next shareholders meeting. When PANDORA heard of this blatant example of sizism, we were shocked! How can a company, supposedly as reputable as Marks and Spencer, think this kind of treatment of women is ok? Marks and Spencer and any other clothes store for that matter, do not have a policy or adding surcharges onto larger sized outer clothes, so why should our undergarments be any different? PANDORA for one fully applaud the campaigning that Beckie Williams is doing on behalf of big-breasted women everywhere and look forward to common sense and the law prevailing. God gave us what he gave us and we shouldn’t be penalized for what it is that we have!

Benazir Bhutto was a Pakistani born politician who chaired the Pakistani People Party (PPP). She was the first woman ever to lead a muslim state, having served as Prime Minister of Pakistan no less than two times. To date, she is Pakistan’s only female Prime Minister. Bhutto was born in Karachi in 1953. She went on to study Comparative Government at Harvard Law School and was quoted as saying her time spent there were ‘four of the happiest years of my life’. She then progressed onto education in the UK where she studied philosophy, politics and economics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. Her knowledge of politics and a favouring belief in democracy meant the pursuit of positions of power within government were expected of Benazir. ‘Democracy is necessary to peace and to undermine the forces of terrorism. This is what Bhutto spent her career trying to achieve and why she is such as an inspiration. In 2007, after departing a PPP rally in Rawalpindi, Bhutto was assassinated. The following year she received a posthumous United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights.

Lisa Smosarski is a real inspiration to females, like the team working here on PANDORA. She is the editor of Stylist Magazine, the ‘fremium’ female weekly periodical. For anyone currently working, or hoping to work within the publishing industry, she is a beacon of hope! Stylist was launched in 2009 and has already since been shortlisted for the prestigious PPA award for both ‘Editor of the Year’ and ‘Designer of the Year’. Stylist has garnered this positive attention and adulation all with Smosarski at the helm. Smosarski herself has featured in the Hospital Club’s ‘100 Most Creative People’ and this just highlights that she is a real force to be reckoned within the publishing world. Her knowledge on what the general public want from the magazines they read during a recession have stood her in good stead and has allowed Stylist to flourish and become the success that it has. Rachel and Lena Segal and their friend, McKinzie Adams are three girls you probably haven’t heard of, but that PANDORA think you should of. At the tender age of just 17, Rachael Segal, her sister and friend designed and developed the new craze in undergarments. The DoodleBra! The DoodleBra is exactly what it claims to be; a bra you can doodle on. Only once you wash it, the bra looks brand new, ready to be doodled on all over again. We all remember being told off for doodling on things we shouldn’t of but now we’re being

Beth Ditto (real name Mary Beth Patterson) is so much more than the lead singer of Indie-Rock group, The Gossip. For one she is someone who speaks out for plus sized women and campaigns for women with healthy body images. She has in the past contributed to a body image column in The Guardian newspaper in which she championed females not feeling pressurised by the media to conform to a certain way of looking and feeling comfortable in your own skin no matter what shape or size you are. Beth is usually causing some kind of controversy and there is no denying she is someone who stands up for what she believes in. This is an admirable trait in anyone but is essential for someone so outspoken. It is common knowledge that Beth is a lesbian and she has been extremely supportive of LGBT groups as well as feminist causes. Beth Ditto is someone who is fully willing to stand up for what she believes in, willing to represent the smaller groups who may not be as capable of speaking up for themselves. For all of these reasons and many more, Beth Ditto is an inspirational female.

given free reign to do it on our clothes! We here at PANDORA know that you really are never too old to stop doodling and thanks to these three girls and their creative innovation, we don’t have to! And the fun is set to go on and on with the development of a DoodleCami and DoodlePanties in the future! Pretty soon, we’ll all be wearing our own designs! The DoodleBra slogan is, ‘Express Yourself and Have Fun’, which is exactly the motto everyone should live by and with this new invention, it shouldn’t be too hard to do!

As well as finding out that I clearly attract girls with the name Lauren, nearly every girl I spoke to has considered going under the knife. Have we become a society in which a boob job is a quick fix? A whopping thirteen of my friends has had boob jobs, a couple for their ‘career’, but most of them for confidence reasons. As a 5’10” leggy blonde, tiny boobs aren’t going to be an issue - fashion and elegance counteracts the lack of weight on top. Whereas me, a 5’5”, rather frumpy little thing with a big bum and thick legs, I do look a tad odd. I was once described as an oversized twelve year old whilst on holiday in a bikini…literally buried my head in the sand. I am still considering having a boob job, but I’m not convinced it will cure all my insecurities; won’t it just highlight the rest?

Elizabeth, 21, Manchester, 32AA, Dress size 10/12 Pandora: Have you ever considered a boob job? Elizabeth: “Yes definitely. ” Pandora: If you were to get a boob job what size would you like to be? Elizabeth: “I would only want to go to a C. “I don’t want big boobs, I just want boobs!” Pandora: Why haven’t you had one yet? Elizabeth: “I haven’t got the money and I’m a bit scared I won’t like them and want to take them out! I don’t like ones I’ve got but they are mine. I suppose I wouldn’t know unless it came to it but while it’s still not a reality I do want one.”

Katie, 19, London, 36EE, dress size 10 Pandora: Have you ever considered having a boob job? Katie: “Yeah I was going to have a boob reduction a few years ago on the NHS as I was having back problems and trouble sleeping because of how big they are. They then stopped doing the operation on the NHS and I can’t afford it yet!” Pandora: What size would you like to be if you could go ahead with the reduction now? Katie: “Just a C!” Pandora: Would you consider any more surgery after that? Katie: “No, I’m only hoping to get them done because they are a pain – literally.”

FAKE Sophie, 24, Leeds, 34E, Dress size 10 Pandora: What made you get a boob job? Sophie: “I really wanted a boob job to make me feel more confident and I would like to become a model.” Pandora: Did you see it as a way of making a career? Sophie: “Yeah in a way, I don’t think I’m bad looking and my figure has always been quite small but my boobs were only a 32C and weren’t big enough. I’ve done a couple of photo shoots for a lads mag that I couldn’t have done before.” Pandora: What for you is too big? Sophie: “I think it depends on the shape and size of the person, I would look silly if mine were any bigger but I’m happy with how big they are now.” Pandora: Would you have any more surgery now you’ve had your boobs done? Sophie: “Yeah, I’m currently saving to get liposuction on my inner thighs. People think I’m silly but I hate that bit of my leg its gross. And will probably get a nose job and cheek implants in a few years.”

FAKE Lauren, 23, Middlesex, 32E, Dress size 6 Pandora: What made you go ahead with the surgery? Lauren: “I wanted it done to make me more curvy and boost self confidence. They make me look nice in clothes now as well.” Pandora: What affect has it had on you? Lauren: “I love my body much more and feel more confident, however I do wish I had followed my own mind and gone bigger rather than listening to other peoples opinions.” Pandora: What size were you before? Lauren: “I was a 32B and now I’m an E.” Pandora:What do you feel about the rest of your body? Would you have any more surgery? Lauren: “I don’t like my nose, and I don’t really like my legs but I wouldn’t have surgery again I don’t think. Well maybe just a few bits, like get my eyes done when I’m older!”

Lauren, 23, Surrey, 32E, Dress Size 10 Pandora: Have you ever considered a boob job? Lauren: “I would consider it. I don’t need them bigger but if they started getting a bit saggy or shrank after childbirth I’d have to do something! A lot of people think mine are fake already though because they are so big compared to the rest of me!” Pandora: Do they affect what you wear? Lauren: “Yes! I can’t wear some tops otherwise I look pregnant or 20 stone. I have to go for more structured clothes. Sometimes I can’t wear low cut tops because I look like a slag.”

Lauren, 21, Essex, 32C, Dress size 8 “I’ve got one boob bigger than the other! Ones a full C and the others a lot smaller!” Pandora: Have you ever considered a boob job? Lauren: Nope. Pandora: Why? Lauren: I don’t really like big boobs, I think you get away with wearing more if your boobs are smaller. Pandora: Have you ever considered surgery of any kind? Lauren: No, I’m not perfect but I’m happy with how I look.

Out of the 60 girls I spoke to, 52 said they had considered surgery on their boobs! Out of the 15 girls who had already had surgery on their boobs, 12 said they would consider more surgery elsewhere on their bodies. So in a few years will we all turn into Heidi from the Hills and become addicted to this ‘quick fix’ or is it genuinely a saviour for those with no confidence and loathe their bodies?!? I’m still unsure so am going to spend a while longer deciding.

SECRETS

HOW BIG IS YOUR BOX OF SECRETS Everyone’s had those moments in life when you literally want the world to swallow you and never spit you back out – only add sex to the situation and we get to new heights of mortifying events!! “I fancied this boy for like my whole life and we text every now and then, even though I no he doesn’t like me in that way. He always asks for a picture of my boobs so on purchasing a new bra, finally I got the guts to send him one! And he didn’t fucking reply! I was gutted and my mind was going in circles. So the next day on the way to work I’m on the train and as we pulled out of the station the train jolted and stopped half way, as I peered around and looked out of the window there he was standing on the platform, practically face to face bar the window. I didn’t know what to do so awkwardly waved and he awkwardly smiled back - for about 10 minutes! I haven’t spoken to him since but what the hell went wrong?!? I have nice boobs!” “Everyone likes to experiment right? So after a lot of wine during a romantic night in with my new boyfriend, we thought why not have a go at anal sex? Neither of us had tried it before and with a couple of my friends liking it I wanted to know what it was like. Well, it was all going well, a bit uncomfortable but I think that goes with the territory. All of a sudden I got a bit of a pain in my stomach and wasn’t feeling right at all, the next thing I no I’ve gone and farted! The absolute shame of it! He flew out of me so quickly that there was no way of my hiding it! And that’s not the worst of it, on the bed landed a small piece of sweetcorn!! Wanting to run away and die was an understatement but I brushed the sweetcorn off the bed and when he asked said it was a bit of fluff! Thank god for it being quite dark! I don’t know whether he saw the sweetcorn but he definitely felt the fart! Needless to say the romance was killed and the relationship didn’t last long after that! That’s ‘move out of the area’ type embarrassing!”

“So, I’m seeing this guy, its not been for very long but we’ve got to that point were all we think about and all we do is have sex! We were out one night with some of my friends and ended up getting really drunk, really early, - you know how it goes, and thought to ourselves, why wait until later when we can pop home quickly and be back out by midnight? In the cab on the way home it was getting a bit steamy on the back seat but I was dying to go for a wee! By the time I opened the front door he was so turned on he threw me back onto the coach whilst whipping my knickers off – he was always quite good at that move! – and started going down on me. With all the will in the world I could not get away from him, I think he thought it was all part it – me telling him to get off! But as I was still enjoying it I probably didn’t sound very convincing! The next thing I know I’ve relaxed a little and without meaning to started to wee – into his mouth!!! As if it wasn’t bad enough so far, he was lapping it up thinking it was my ‘enjoyment’! I couldn’t tell him what had happened with out admitting to wetting myself so even as he bragged to a couple of his mates that same night about how good he was, I still kept my mouth shut! Turned out he wasn’t a very nice person and had a girlfriend the whole time – got what he deserved!” “I’ve had a couple of bad moments I not going to lie… the worst has to be when I knocked a girls tooth out. We were getting together in the hallway of a hotel but were scared we were going to get caught so were trying to be quick about it. She was giving me head at the time and we heard a noise so looked around a bit, and as I went to carry on, I accidentally hit her tooth and it fell out! Because we were so drunk we found it hilarious and stumbled back to the room and told everyone we were with! Turns out she had a cap and it had fallen out, but either way I hit someone’s tooth out with my schlong!!” Have you got an embarressing story? Email us at pandora.mag@gmail.com PANDORA | 61

JOBS

STRANGE AND UNUSUAL JOBS FOR STUDENTS

U

niversity life can be hazardous to your bank account. With new-found freedom, rent to pay, food bills and course necessities (like expensive text books and equipment) to fork out for, sometimes it seems as though student loans run dry all too quickly. Account overdrafts and credit cards can provide temporary relief, but are not ideal ways to keep the cash-strapped student’s head above water – so it’s easy to see why many people look for part-time jobs to not only augment their income. While most jobs available to students are based in retail environments, restaurants, bars and call centres, the following examples eschew stacking supermarket shelves and serving refreshments to diners, in favour of jobs that are a little bit more out-of-theordinary. In 2009, Hollywood film director Eli Roth revealed that he once helped to pay for his university life by working as a chat room operator for a sex website. He was even asked to pose as a woman and maintain several ‘conversations’ at once. The ‘Hostel’ director and Inglourious Basterds actor told The New York Post: “They hired guys because guys know what other guys want to hear.” Twenty-nine year-old German student Daniel Schneider made ends meet by working as a taxi driver, postman and gardener, but it was his occupation as a blood courier that ensured his inclusion here. The

private clinic Medical Center Cologne specialises in treating patients with cancer and severe viral diseases and needed to employ someone to chaperone blood samples from Cologne to a laboratory in Aschaffenburg in Bavaria – a journey of 230 kilometres. It’s a five hour round trip by rail and fitted in perfectly with Schneider’s studies as the train journey gave him an abundance of time to research and write his coursework. He said, “For me, the job was perfect. I was able to write my thesis while on the train and at the same time got paid well”. Not only that, but it also netted him an exclusive BahnCard 100 (worth €3,500), which allowed him unlimited free train travel around Germany. Despite this job appearing perfect for the average student, Schneider insisted that there is a great deal of responsibility in ensuring the safe arrival of his charges: “Each sample is of great importance to the individual patient, so this work should only be done by someone who is trustworthy and reliable.” Schneider also ended up having a ‘busman’s holiday’ in Dubai when he filled in for another courier who had fallen ill. Sometimes students don’t need to have any sorts of skills at all to make money. Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists all have needs for so-called ‘human guinea pigs’ to submit themselves for participation in a large variety of experiments. The advancement of knowledge combined with the

JOBS opportunity to earn some cold hard cash is tempting to many students – especially as they often don’t have to travel far from (or out of) campus to go to work. Every study has a variety of criteria to fulfill, but should an applicant fit the bill he or she might be asked to participate in anything from interviews and questionnaires to EKGs, blood tests, MRIs and even internal examinations. The only negative aspect to being a ‘guinea pig’ is the possibility of dealing with unwanted side-effects. But not every job has to have an element of the unknown. Indeed, some are designed around relaxation itself. A student from Birmingham earned £1,000 for testing luxury beds in an Edgbaston showroom recently. Roisin Madigan, aided bed specialists Simon Horn Ltd by sleeping in their designer beds every day from 10am to 6pm for a whole month. Some of the beds were worth up to £27,000. Madigan then blogged about her ‘sleep survey’ experiences online. Manager Craig Roylance said that the company’s original advert gleaned over 400 applicants in only its first day, with another 200

following in the second. Madigan won the post partly due to her writing ability. Madigan’s sleeping conditions were frequently altered, with the effects of alcohol, caffeine, temperature, light and noise all being adjusted and the effects recorded. Sometimes, she was even asked to sleep in the showroom’s window. If sleeping in full view of customers and staff isn’t your thing, how about becoming a ‘Worm Watcher’ (or Great Worms Project Research Assistant) for the University of Minnesota? It only pays $12 per hour (and you have to move to Minnesota), but if the identification of exotic earthworms is a hobby of yours you might not mind the low pay. Perhaps Yale University’s opening for a Baseball Game DJ is more enticing to the sports-minded. The unusual jobs don’t stop there - snake venom milkers, dog food tasters (yes, you read that right), crocodile wranglers, chewing gum cleaners and even people to watch paint dry are all needed by various companies and institutions, and in today’s strained economic climate who would turn them down?

JOB HUNT Work while you study or study while you work? Either way we’ve put together a list of websites and email addresses for you to take a look at for jobs and careers opportunities. Even if they aren’t suitable until your studies are finished, it’s worth checking them out and making sure you fit the criteria – while its not too late to bulk up your CV and make it so!
