PAY IT FORWARD As we celebrate the holy month of Ramadan these days, some of us forget about the core significance of the religious month, and rather than spending it in religious devotion and meditation, they take the spiritual aura that accompany it neglecting the reason why we celebrate it, and why it has a certain significance compared to any other month of the year. I don’t want to sound too religious, or give you the cliché of how we should spend it in prayers and fasting rather than wasting our time having Shisha at cafes and staying up all night long watching TV serials and ending up sleeping all day, I would rather shed the light on the ‘Pay it forward’ concept. Ramadan this year comes in a very special timing in the Egyptian history after Sisi won the presidential elections, as we celebrate a relatively peaceful phase (hopefully) after three years of conflicts, anger violence and bloodshed. Making a better Egypt can’t be separated from making a better self and starting with the man in the mirror. If we can
apply the ‘Pay It Forward’ theory among each other in a couple of months Egypt will be a better place for all of us: the rich and the poor, as at the end we are all connected and attached to one another being citizens of the same land. If you could do a good thing to the people without waiting for a return, and instead ask the person you helped to help another one with no return except helping another person and so on… we will have a huge cycle of good deeds. A thing that we desperately need after the cruel phase Egyptians witnessed recently, and regardless of our political disagreements no one will reject the idea, especially in a generous month like Ramadan. The reward behind good deeds is not materialistic, and you won’t feel it right away, but the relief and satisfaction you feel after making someone else happy is the kind of happiness you don’t want to miss.
Try the idea and we would love to hear from you if it worked as well as how you feel about it. Send us your story at amira@lounge-eg.com and maybe we can refer to it in the next issue. Ramadan Kareem everyone.

SHARING HIS INTERESTS: THE
WAY TO A PERFECT RELATIONSHIP
s
haring with your partner his hobbies and interests is vital for nourishing your relationship. I remember once a friend told me that one of the main secrets of the success of any relationship is doing everything together. Yes, girls have different interests than guys, but it’s still important to share your interests together. If you want to know more about the importance of couples’ sharing each others’ interests, read on..
Do you know that feeling when you and your partner engage in an activity? Be it playing music, working out, cooking, fashion, whatever it is that you enjoy doing together, the effect it has on you is equally good: you feel excited, happy, your heart is warm, you feel drawn to your partner, and ultimately, the bond of love you share is strengthened. Now let’s imagine a different scenario. Your partner has a passion of his own-which he does, and he would like you to share in it. It may be that this passion of his has got nothing to do with your interests and likes. You may feel like yawning just thinking about engaging in it. You cannot possibly imagine that you could enjoy sharing this with him. You now have two options: Number one is that you simply don’t make an effort and leave him doing his thing. Number two is more challenging: you could make that effort and join him! What would the results of both choices be? The result of the first option is more profound than you might think at first. If your partner really has a passion, he is likely spending a considerable amount of his time on it.
LOUNGE 24
If you’re never joining him, this unfortunately means time away from you. We are all allowed, and should have, our own interests and passions, and that is why we need to allow our partners to spend time doing what they like. That is how they grow as persons and develop their personalities. Again, if he is always doing it alone, you are not growing together. You are not becoming more alike, more connected, you are not getting to know your partner’s unique characteristics better. A loving spouse though, will try to include his partner in his passions. If he is trying, you should be happy that he is so considerate, and not outright reject the invitation just because you find what he’s doing boring. Remember, by doing so, you are rejecting the possibility to spend time with him, to get to know him better, to grow together. The results of the second option, on the other hand, are very rewarding. In fact, if you do make an effort, you have a chance of experiencing all the good things in a relationship. Yes, you can feel excited
about what you are doing, because you are stepping out of your comfort zone; you can feel proud of yourself for doing this thus, boosting your self-confidence; you can feel happy because you are doing something loving for your partner. In return, your partner will be very grateful and will be more inclined to do things you like next time. Because you are doing things together, trying to please each other, your love will grow. Perhaps you will even find your partner’s hobby to be pretty cool after all. Sharing is a concept that brings couples together and creats a lasting relationship. Yes, it’s important to share your passion in a relationship by showing interest in your partner’s interests other than your love for each other. At first, passion may be enough to keep your love going, but once your relationship matures, it’s important to share your interests or activities so that your relationship stays fresh. You should work on sharing hobbies, whether you like to go to salsa classes, or find a TV
show that no one likes but you two. You don’t have to like everything he likes because that way you will turn into someone else, but rather learn to respect what he likes, and try to share it with him. Learn to take an interest in his interests. Remember what he likes to do and what he likes to talk about. You don’t have to act like you love his hobbies, but at least try to understand why he’s such a fan. If he loves a band, try to understand why. Just asking about his interests and talking about the things that matter to him can be enough. Share with him his hobbies be it watching football, playing music, going to the gym, reading or watching movies. Now that the World Cup is on, watch some of the matches with your partner. You can even invite some friends and prepare snacks to enjoy while watching. If he likes to go to the cinema, invite him to that movie he has been dying to watch. That way he will be more excited to share with you your hobbies and interests, and thus, enjoy a loving relationship that is based on understanding and compromising.

THE MAGICAL WORLD t
his holy month Youmna Gad shares with us her experience with teaching her kid to use the magical words. ‘Thanks,’ ‘sorry’ and ‘excuse me’ are words that vanished from our world these days, and so we give you tips on how to teach your little ones use these words more often, and how to raise in them the spirit of giving and sharing.
If you take a closer look at the upcoming generation, you will see that the magic words are already lost, my magic words are almost fading. I call” thank you,” “please” and “excuse me” as my magic words simply because whenever you use them they start acting like magic. I was raised by the kind of parents who did their best to pass to us the importance of magic words, they used to direct me telling me to say ‘hadratak,’ not ‘enty’ and ‘naam’ not ‘eh,’ and this is how I noticed the effect of magic words, the continuous repetition of these words in our daily conversations made it like an automatic full stop when writing a sentence. I understand that there are generation differences, we were different from our parents and our parents were different from our grandparents and so on, what I don’t get is what that has to do with the magic words, it’s the fundamental key to have a respected society where citizens respect one another. Who should be blamed for this? Is it the parents? Well, may be. Media also should be blamed, but again it’s a double responsibility. Seriously, talk to a 7 or 8 year old boy or a girl and you will see the difference. Kids should never be blamed for that, we should blame ourselves actually, yet its easy to teach them these magic words or so I believe, may be if we use them more in our daily conversations with our kids, words will stick to their minds and they will automatically use them at some point. Kids learn by repetition and examples so, be their role model and say ‘sorry’ when you miss something, say ‘thank you’ when they do something that needs praising, or to the guy at the supermarket who carries your goodies, and that’s how you will make them use the magic word. Also, don’t criticize; direct your kids saying we should say so or not say so. The best part about raising a toddler and trying to get
him to get used to the magic words is the pronunciation of words, its hilarious with my boy, I get a ‘tokran’ instead of ‘shokran,’ while ‘3afwan’ sounds cute when he says it, and ‘sorry’ is the cutest word he says with that sad look he has. Since he was a baby, I decided to repeat these magic words to make him use them, and it actually worked. When he forgets to say ‘thank you’ to someone I whisper in his ear: shouldn’t you say thank you? Almost 80% of the time it works. Yet, some behaviours are never fully comprehended by toddlers, I remember that one time when I decided that some of his toys are no longer suitable for his age, and must go to some other needy kid. We packed them in a huge bag and when it was the time to send them away, misery became his companion, he didn’t get why he should give his toys away, and regardless of the hundred times that I explained to him, it seemed like me talking to myself because he still didn’t accept it. We gave them away anyway, but it was my fault, I introduced him unfairly to the concept of sharing and he can’t get it yet, but I discovered with some parenting readings that one thing to enhance the sense of giving in him is to let him give. For example, if you are meeting friends who have kids too, buy small books and colours, and let him share them with the rest of the kids, and that’s how he learns to give to others given the fact that he is not giving away something of his own, I am still in that process of introducing the concept of giving; hopefully I will get there sometime.
PARENTAL TIPS This Ramadan, introduce the sharing spirit to your kids and toddlers, teach your kids to do the paper lanterns we used to do when we were kids, buy some papers and supplies, and start making shinny coloured lanterns for kids, friends and the doorman’s little kid, and let your kid be in charge of giving them. That’s an activity that will help them feel the Ramadan sharing spirit.

What do you see when you look in the mirror? A shadow of your former self. Lines, angles, shadows and features all working together to form a face. A satisfied smile. A misunderstood figure. Unfulfilled potential.

Did you enjoy the last book you read? I haven’t finished a decent book in ages, but I read an incredible book years ago that I can tell you about endlessly if you want. Slowly and surely, I made it to the end I found it both informative and entertaining. Everyone recommended it, but I hated it. I didn’t finish it. Which of these bands do you prefer? The Shadows The White Stripes Dire Straits Stone Roses The Jimi Hendrix Experience What is your dream job? Footballer. University professor. CEO of a large company. Hotshot lawyer. President of a small country.
What is your favourite West End show? Phantom of the Opera War Horse Les Misérables Blood Brothers Being Shakespeare Who is your favourite philosopher? Robert Nozick, the libertarian who valued freedom over equality. Socrates, the man with a method. Karl Marx, who put the team first. Chrysippus, who died from laughing excessively at one of his own jokes (apparently). Diogenes, who mocked Plato, Socrates and Alexander the Great but ended up less famous and influential than all of them. What is your favourite political quote? “A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward.” Franklin D. Roosevelt
Results Mostly A Oh dear, you are ENGLAND. You were once a creator, an innovator and a contender, but now you are content to just turn up. If someone were to mumble your praises, they would use words like “dependable,” “honest” and “hardworking.” You need to loosen up a bit and regain some of your mojo. To your credit, you are admired at home and your efficiency is generally respected at work, but a little more flair could bring back your glory days. You are well paid and you have hit heights that others will never achieve, but your star is fading. Mostly B If you were a World Cup team, you

You were erratic and unpredictable in your younger years, but that flakiness has been replaced with a newfound mental sturdiness. You are confident, you know who you are and you have strong ideas about the meaning of life. You are a winner. If people are too jealous to appreciate you for who you are, that’s their problem. Mostly C Congratulations. If you were a World Cup team, you would be GERMANY. You are a winner. You are powerful, successful and you rarely fail at anything. You are not afraid of confrontation, but you are smart enough to hold your tongue and keep the peace when required. You have too many strengths to mention in one short paragraph: you move with the times, you get things done, and people respect and fear you in equal measure. Perhaps you could work on being a

Your charm is famous and, while you might not have fulfilled your potential, you have lived a full and true life. Winning is over-rated, conflict is necessary and you were right all along. Mostly E If you were a World Cup team, you would be PORTUGAL. Well, aren’t you interesting. You’re not that successful; you’re not that rich; and you have never really had any power, but you are capable of producing a kind of magic that is immensely attractive. NOT ALL OF US WILL RUN FOR PRESIDENT
BUT ALL OF US CAN RUN FOR OUR LIVES!

his month Mony Helal asks Lounge’s readers to think and reflect, go beyond party, go beyond fashion and go beyond the obvious; If they could be the Egyptian president for one day, what would they change?
IBRAHIM WAGDY
(Coca Cola Company) I will invest in wind, solar and even nuclear energy. I will also remove governmental support on some certain products, and give away free agricultural land outside the major cities. I will not allow free amenities for third child and put a fine on the fourth. And, I will build metal plate separators on u turns so that lanes don’t pile up and block other traffic.

ALAA SALEH
(Political Science Graduate) First of all, I would change the most of the body of executives and replace them with expert young minds in the specialized fields. I would direct Egypt’s foreign policy more towards Africa and establish well founded cooperation. I would enhance women’s participation in politics not by quotas, but by granting them equal rights and by conducting state lead campaigns and workshops to enhance the society’s views of women. I can go on and on about education, security, the economy, and unemployment.
YARA TAMBASHAWY
(PR & Marketing Manager) I will form a mandatory political correctness classes for everybody, as well as basic etiquette and shower police with smell detectors.
MOHAMED FARAG
KARIM ZANANIRI
(Brand Manager of OR Fashion) Get rid of all Islamists by any means, severe traffic and discipline rules, as well as upgrade education and lifestyle.
(Al Arabia Real Estate Development) If I were the president, the first thing I would do is make education a must as we offer free education. I think that a system should be implemented so that if you are a student in preparatory school and you score below 70%, you automatically go to a military school, where you do your secondary as a military student. When these students score over 70% in their secondary scores, they get offered a full scholarship by the army to study in good universities, and if not they are placed in military institutes, where they will learn a decent craft and make a living out of it.
YOUSSEF AL SPAHI
(Owner of Face to Face Modeling Agency) I would separate completely religion from politics, dissolve all religious parties, and focus on the tourism industry since it could be the number one source for the growth of the Egyptian economy. I would encourage all international festivals and concerts to take place in Egypt. I will also apply severe fines to those litter, work on cleaning all cities in Egypt and of course work on eliminate terrorism. I would forbid Nekab since it reflects uncivilized image and facilitate terrorism, and work on the improvement of education because it is the source of real progress of youth and we are far behind in this major sector. And last but not least, I would apply severe fines to those who don’t respect traffic rules.

Tell us more about your role in ‘El Sabaa Wasaya’? I play the role of Bosy, a sister to six other siblings from a very poor background. She had to sacrifice her personal life and became a spinster to take care of her sick father, which forced her to work as a maid until she discovers that her father owns 28 million pounds, which made her convince her siblings to participate in killing the father in order to take the money, some of her siblings will agree and others won’t. We also know through the serial that the father wrote seven commandments for each brother and sister that had to be accomplished in order for them to be able to take the money. Some of them are doable, while others are impossible to be accomplished; the serial is full of suspense and surprises. The atmosphere of the serial is somehow similar to the idea of last Ramadan’s hit ‘Neran Sadeeka,’ especially that it’s written by the same author and director… The suspense is close but the story is totally different, ‘Neran Sadeka’ was a bit complicated as it contained a lot of flash backs and was tracing 25 years plus, the mysteriousness that surrounded the incidents, unlike ‘El Sabaa Wasaya,’ which tackles a very common class of the Egyptian society so people will identify more with it, the incidents might be full of surprises and suspense but realistic. It shows the insecurity Egypt witnessed after the revolution in the past three years.
e
gyptian actress Rania Youssef reveals in an exclusive interview with Amira Tharwat all about her most anticipated role in this Ramadan’s TV serial ‘El Sabaa Wasaya,’ how she sees Egypt in the future and who she supports this World Cup…
You appear in a lot of scenes without makeup on unlike last Ramadan’s role as the famous actress, did you feel comfortable doing that? I appear all through the serial in a one or two galabya and khemar, without any makeup or any accessories. Actually, I really like being in a role that doesn’t require any accessories or makeup; its easier and I liked that because I will be different from all the stars who will appear this Ramadan. How far are you willing to go with your looks for a role? As far as it gets me, I can appear without makeup or accessories, and I can even add wrinkles to my skin to appear older, which I’ve done before in my beginnings because I was playing various stages of a character’s life. I don’t have a problem with sacrificing my look at all, on the contrary; I enjoy playing with my features more than appearing in an ordinary role. After almost a year of marriage, how do you feel your life have changed over the past year? It was a big challenge for me especially that I am married to an engineer who has nothing to do at all with the field. My previous marriage was from producer Mohamed Mokhtar who knows everything about our job, but my current husband like any other man won’t understand that shooting might start in the morning and last for 24 hours nonstop. This was the hardest challenge, which was to convince him that one should expect anything in our job and it’s totally unpredictable. Any plans for extending the family? No at all, he has three kids and I have two so we both are totally satisfied. Describe to us a typical day of you in Ramadan… Unfortunately, I work, if I take a break, I go to the gym for couple of hours and meet friends if possible, nothing special really.

Apart from ‘El Sabaa Wasaya,’ what is the TV serial you are keen to watch this Ramadan? ‘Segn El Nesa’ and ‘Saraya Abdeen.’ Nelly Karim is a very close friend of mine and I enjoy watching her acting. I also love director Kamla Abou Zekry’s works and Amr Arafa so, I really can’t wait to watch both serials this Ramadan. Are you a good cook? Which recipe do you cook best? Actually, I am a very good cook and what I am really good at is Mesakaa. Tell us more about the conflict behind the TV serial El Amalya Messi… I signed to participate in the TV serial ‘El Amalya Messi’ for three years starting from the last year, but the production witnessed some complications so, they asked me to postpone the serial for this year, which was fine with me. However, they asked me to reduce my payment from last year, which I refused to do as I told them I won’t increase it, but I can’t also reduce it. The production company told me that they will see what they can do about it, and then, I suddenly realized that they already started shooting, but with actress Bushra playing my role. It was really unacceptable. Now that President Sisi won the presidential elections, how do you see Egypt’s future? I am extremely happy as I was keen on voting to president Sisi. I am also very optimistic about the future; I see it as a beautiful Egypt heading to the better. Are you into soccer? Who do you support this World Cup? I am not a big fan of football in general, however; when it comes to the World Cup I love watching it especially to support my husband’s enthusiasm about it. I support Brazil and Holland whom I believe that they will make it to the finals. Tell us more about your coming movie ‘El Walad’… I don’t want to talk much about it because it was already postponed for several times, all I can say is that it will be staring Khaled Saleh and I. Also, I am working on another TV serial called ‘El Sandok El Aswad,’ which was supposed to be aired this Ramadan, but we couldn’t finish shooting it so, it will be aired after the holy month.

AL SAYDA EL OLA
Ghada Abdel Razik’s serials are always controversial and usually never pass by without causing debate. This year Ghada chose to make it even spicier by choosing to depict the personality of Egypt’s first lady. SADEEK EL OMR
One of the most controversial serials this Ramadan, ‘Sadeek El Omr’ passed by various battles with the censorship in order to gain the approval for it to be aired. The story that discusses the relationship between late President Gamal Abdel Nasser and General Abdel Hakeem Amer was going to be a movie, and after conflicts with the authorities it will finally see the light but as a TV serial. SEGN EL NESAA
After last Ramadan’s huge success of TV serial ‘Zat,’ director Kamla Abou Zekry and actress Nelly Karim introduce us this year to ‘Segn El Nesaa’ starring Dorra and Ruby. The serial tackles the lives of female prisoners, and the reasons that led them to be in that place reflecting the fact that they are not criminals by nature and questions the reasons that made them go to prison and end with such miserable destiny. The serial is produced by El Adl Group who brought us last Ramadan the successful serial ‘Al Dayaa’ starring Hany Salama and Basma.
AL EXCELLENCE
After long absence from TV, both Ahmed Ezz and Nour surprise us this year with their coming TV serial Al Excellence. Ezz plays in the serial the role of Seif, a businessman who gets involved in corruption and a murder case. The serial is directed by Wael Abdallah and written by Ayman Salama. Along with Ezz and Nour, the serial will be starring Salah Abdallah, Menna Fadaly & Entesar.
EMBRATORYT MEEN
KALAM ALA WARAK
After the huge success of last year’s TV serial ‘Hekayt Haya’ directed by Mohamed Samy and starring Ghada Abdel Razik, and the huge disagreement between Ghada and Samy that reached courts, this Ramadan the director decided to replace Ghada with non less than the Lebanese diva Haifa Wahby in his coming TV serial ‘Kalam Ala Warak.’ The serial is shot between Lebanon and Egypt, where it tackles the involvement of an Egyptian businessman in a murder case while he was in Lebanon. ‘Kalam Ala Warak’ is the last TV serial to be shot by the late actor Hussien El Imam and starring along with Haifa, Maged El Masry, Rougina and most of ‘Hekayt Hayah’s’ team.
After her bestselling book ‘Ayza Atgawez’ that won huge success and was turned to a TV serial starring Hend Sabry, writer Ghada Abdel Al tried this year to bring us another comedy yet, away from the marriage zone through this Ramadan’s TV serial ‘Embratoryt Meen.’ The serial tells the story of an Egyptian family living in London, who decided to move back to Cairo after the revolution hoping things will get better and that’s where the comedy starts. The serial is starring Hend Sabry, Mohamed Shahin and directed by Mariam Abou Ouf.
SAHEB EL SAADA
One of the stars that we always wait with passion for his TV serial is the legendary actor Adel Imam, and this Ramadan Imam plays the role of Bahgat, a retired governor who devotes his time and life for raising his grandchildren because their parents are too busy to take care of. He also tries to make everyone around him happy including his demanding wife played by Lebliba. Capricorn Dec.23 - Jan.20 Relationships will be for you the common point at which all the paths of July 2014 will meet. Love, marriage or steady relationships will be in the foreground. The person besides you will become the main character of the period and if there’s nobody by your side, this will become the number-one problem to be solved. You will aso be able to end a cycle started last month that has to do with the communication between partners, with assigning tasks or with the way in which work and private life interweave. Some Capricorn people find love at the workplace, at the gym or in the waiting room of some doctor. Relationships will have considerable influence on the professional life as well. July 2014 will be important for contracts, collaborations and teamwork. No matter how lonely you are, there will be no other way now but to connect to the others, to integrate.
Aquarius Jan.21 - Feb.19 Although the air is impregnated with the sweet scent of romanticism, the impulse of the flesh will prevail and your body will be much more sensitive, much more receptive to stimuli. It’s a perfect period to explore your erotic potential and to improve your private life. This month will be excellent for promoting your image and talents. July 2014 will put you in the best light and will create favorable circumstances. People will like you, will appreciate your joyful and friendly style and will be ready to applaud your performance. The first two decans of July 2014 will particularly favour artistic expressiveness and creativity, but also administration, organization and leadership skills. Fortunately, success will mirror accordingly in the bank account. The area that represents hygiene and medicine will be very active, it’ll be active in quite a beneficial way, as it seems.
Pisces Sandra Bullock, July 26, 1964
Feb.20 - Mar.21 There’s a very romantic month in store for you. July 2014 will be the month of enjoyment, a feast for the body and soul. This month would be more appropriate for holiday and fun than for work. However, if you need to work, you must necessarily boost your efficiency so that you have as much time for non-professional activities - or combine the useful with the pleasant. Success will top off especially creative-artistic activities, (re)presentation actions and pedagogical work. The date of July 16th will bring a significant event. Also, you’ll be in an excellent shape, especially in the first two decans. You’ll have a lot of physical energy, and the morale will be at its best. Excellent for dance, sport, sex, and any other physical activity. Have as much fun as you can! It’ll be the perfect period for it.

May.22 - Jun.21
Your love will now need certainty and tangible means of persuasion, becoming more receptive to a stuffed wallet than to a walk in the moonlight, more sensitive to a nice present than to a love song. No sooner than the last decan of July 2014 will your sensitivity to love whispers and notes (including the electronic ones, of course) grow. It will then be the time of walks taken together and of sharing feelings during long private conversations. It is still in the last decan of July 2014 that you might take a trip with sentimental connotations or meet a person that could come to mean something special for you. The end of the month will be the beginning of a period that will energize the couple, but it might also favor conflicts. July 2014 will be a lively and effervescent month, which will keep you busy almost all the time. You’ll be on the move, you’ll meet a lot of people, discuss, negotiate, calculate, set things out.
The first two decans in July 2014 will be a delight: love will easily find its way to you and the universe will conspire to fill your heart with joy. July 2014 will bring optimism and sweetness, will give you charm and elegance, will surround your gestures and body with a silky veil of sensuality, will make you able to gain popularity and give birth to desires. Your couple life will have high chances to fall under the sign of passion hence onward, being nurtured with communication and mentalspiritual harmony. Also, this month will be a period with important financial connotations for you. You’ll be in for higher income than usual, for financial decisions and actions, but there will also be risks of higher expenses than the ordinary ones. At the professional level, ambitions will grow, projects will become bolder, accomplishments greater, prestige will amplify and/or will consolidate.
