Banff National Park
It all started with an argument... Once British Columbia joined Canada, the 10-year construction of the transcontinental railroad began in 1875. Construction reached the Bow Valley, and more specifically Sulphur Mountain, in 1883. It was there that Canadian Pacific Railway workers discovered natural (Cave and Basin) hot springs. Immediately recognizing the tourism potential of the springs, an argument ensued among the railway workers regarding ownership rights to develop the property. To protect the springs from commercial exploitation, Prime Minister John A. Macdonald in 1885 established a 10-square-mile reserve area around them. Two years later, the reserve became Canada’s first national park under the Rocky Mountains Park Act. The park was later expanded to include 260 square miles, and in 1930 the area was renamed Banff National Park after the Banffshire region of Scotland. In 1984, the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, of which Banff is a part, were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, Banff inspires more than 3,000,000 visitors each year.
Indigenous Peoples For more than 10,000 years, Indigenous Peoples have lived in and enhanced the Banff area. Three groups of indigenous people are recognized in Canada: First Nations, the Inuit, and Métis. 630 First Nation communities, eight main Inuit groups, and more than 290,000 Métis People call Canada home.

Johnston Canyon This canyon is carved from bright, silvery limestone. Its relatively easy trail winds along roaring waterfalls, rushing creek waters, and under rugged stone bridges and tunnels. The scenery from both the lower and upper views of the falls is truly picturesque. Be one of the few who hike beyond the upper trail see the phenomenal “Ink Pots,” circular pools within blue and green ponds that are created by bubbling underground springs.

Check it out! Alberta has loved ice hockey since 1895. The sport originated just 20 years prior in Montréal in 1875 and since then, its popularity has grown faster than a puck sliding on smooth ice! In 1919, the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association (AAHA) reorganized the province’s hockey into the Big-4 League: two teams from Calgary — the Canadians and Tigers, and two teams from Edmonton — the Eskimos and Dominions. Today, Banff is represented in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) by its Hockey Academy Bears. Since the modern NHL era began in 1967, Alberta has been represented by the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers. The Flames won the Stanley Cup in the 1988–89 season. The Edmonton Oilers, went on to become five-time Cup winners between 1983 and 1990, with “the Great One,” Wayne Gretzky, playing for them during the first four wins.
