Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay

Curious about bioluminescence? Puerto Rico’s Vieques Island is home to the “Brightest Bio Bay in the World” (Guinness Book of World Records 2008). Its nighttime luminescence is caused by microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates that glow bright blue when they physically contact another object. Their bay effects are best seen during a new moon phase.
