Dear Bend Brewfest Enthusiasts: For the last 106 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been making a significant impact in the lives of children across the nation. The mission of BBBS is to empower youth to achieve their highest potential through meaningful one-to-one relationships with caring mentors. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon has been providing mentoring services for 16 years. The simple act of mentoring a child can have long-lasting benefits. We are in the business of “Changing how our Children grow up in our Community.” A Big Brother or Big Sister match is carefully administered and supported by rigorous standards and trained personnel. Professional agency staff strive for matches that are not only safe and well suited to each child’s needs, but also harmonious and built to last. That is why so much care is taken in screening and orienting volunteers, and then in matching them with children. In 2009, we served 450 matches throughout the tri-county area. However, there are many more children who could benefit. Big Brothers Big Sisters’ recipe for success is quite simple. We need “Bigs” and “Bucks.” These two elements are critical in sustaining our current program and paramount in order to help vulnerable children beat the odds. We partner with the Bend Brewfest each year to create awareness and utilize the event to recruit potential Big Brothers and Big Sisters to join our organization. Big Brothers Big Sisters is very appreciative to the Bend Brewfest event crew and organizers for selecting us to be a part of this community-wide event. The inaugural Deschutes Brewery Twilight 5K run/walk will take place on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. This will be Bend’s first midweek race and will capitalize on the long days and warm temperatures of August. The course

will be an all-pavement affair that takes you through two of the premier parks along the beautiful Deschutes River. The race starts and finishes at the Deschutes Brewery off ShevlinHixon Drive in the Old Mill District. The Twilight 5k will be a great time and a unique event here in Bend, Oregon because after you get done putting the hurt on this course, you’ll be treated to a beer garden featuring Deschutes Brewery’s Twilight Summer Ale, great post race food, and some music to shake

your booty to if you have any energy left. The race will also kick off the Bend Brewfest. There is nothing like a little run to help earn those calories that those tasty beverages contain. I know you think this can’t get any better — a run, beer, food, music — but wait, it does. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Central Oregon. MT. SHASTA BREWING COMPANY Weed, California • www.weedales.com Mt. Shasta opened in 2004 in a building that originally housed the Medo-Bel Creamery in Weed, CA on the I-5 corridor. DEFINING ABV

ABV stands for “alcohol by volume.” It is a standard measure of how much alcohol (ethanol) is contained in an alcoholic beverage, like beer.

DEFINING IBU

IBU stands for “International Bittering Units.” This is a measurement of the actual bitterness of a beer as contributed by the alpha acid from hops. Generally speaking, beers with IBUs of less than 20 have little to no apparent hops presence, IBUs from 20-45 offer a mild to pronounced hops presence, and IBUs greater than 45 — while still considered mild by many Northwest brewers’ standards — offer a more pronounced hops flavor and bitterness.

What are hops anyway? For nearly 1,000 years, hops have been used in the beer brewing process. Hops are the flower clusters on the fast-growing herbaceous perennial hop plants, which are used as a flavoring, preservative and stability agents in the brewing process. These handy little flowers also balance the flavors of the beer, contributing a bitterness that complements the sweetness of the malts. “Deschutes Brewery has used whole leaf hops (and have invested heavily behind them) from day one because we believe they yield a better beer with better flavor,” said Larry Sidor, brewmaster for Deschutes Brewery. “We’re big fans of Mother Nature and keeping our brewing ingredients as close as possible as to what she provides.” In addition to a healthy dose of bitter, hops contribute floral, citrus and herbal aromas, while also aiding in the retention of the beer’s “head,” or the length of time that the foamy head on the beer (created by carbonation) will last. Hops are the main factors in a beer’s “IBU” rating – or International Bittering Units. The higher this rating, generally, the more hops were used during the brewing process. For example, a more “mainstream” beer like Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale has an IBU rating of 37. Women in Brewing Although men dominate the brewing industry, history tells us that brewing was traditionally a woman’s job. Women are returning to brewing and making significant strides (not to mention good beer) in the process. In fact, both Full Sail Brewing Company and New Belgium Brewing are owned by women. Irene Firmat, who founded Full Sail in 1987, was recently named Woman Executive of the Year by the Portland Business Journal. New Belgium was started by couple Kim and Jeff Jordan in the late 80s. One of the newest beers to hit the can is Pyramid Breweries summer seasonal “Haywire Hefeweizen,” which is available in 16-ounce cans in the Seattle and southern California markets only. California’s 21st Amendment Brewery cans all of its beers, which sport fun names like “Hell or High Watermelon Wheat Beer” and “Brew Free or Die IPA.” “We chose cans for three main reasons. They are better for the beer because they keep it fresher; better for the environment because of their recyclability and lightweight; and better for the craft beer drinkers’ lifestyle because they are more portable,” said Nico Freccia, owner of 21st Amendment. The tradition of the Old Mill District limited edition posters and pint glasses continue with new designs this year. For the third year in a row, shoppers and concert-goers can add to their collections by redeeming receipts to receive a FREE signature poster or pint glass. Visitors can bring a Les Schwab Amphitheater concert ticket, along with $50 in receipts from any of the Old Mill District shops, restaurants, galleries or cinemas to qualify. Didn’t go to a concert? How sad. A cool free pint glass or poster can still be yours by bringing in receipts totaling $100 or more to the Ticket Mill or the Oregon Duck Store. Go home happy! In 2008, pint glass designs

included art dedicated to the Old Mill District, Mt. Bachelor, the Les Schwab Amphitheater and Mirror Pond. Last year, a new colorful Old Mill District design, Smith Rock, Nordeen Nordic ski Shelter and the Deschutes River graced the shelves of patrons. Paul Leighton at Steller Design has done it again in 2010, with more nods to area landmarks, including Sparks Lake, The Badlands and the Cascade Mountain Range. A special glass dedicated to the National Cyclocross Championships, held in Bend for 2009 and 2010, will also be available this year. The Low-Down on Nitro

Recently I was asked to write a piece about what makes Nitro beer so tasty. What better excuse to partake in “research.” I mean, do I have a tough job or what? With thirst in hand and an eye for nitro, the wife and I hit five local brewpubs to see what we could learn. All in all we found three local nitros (two stouts and a black ale) and a nitro IPA from Colorado (at one of Bend’s finer restaurants). Were our search in winter, we’d likely have found even more. Right or wrong, a lot of folks equate nitro with dark beers which are consumed more in the colder months. So the question remains: why is nitro beer so tasty? I’d say there are two main reasons. First, nitro creates a slow pour. It takes time to fill the glass. At first the entire beer appears creamy. Then the cream cascades upwards until one to two inches of super dense foam condenses on top. This cascading effect is also known as fallout and, when witnessed in good light, is visually stunning. Oh sweet anticipation! Second, nitro beer is smoother, creamier and softer. Every sip must pass through that dense foam curtain which serves to hold back the bitter elements while permitting the chocolate, coffee and in the case of the IPA, citrus flavor to filter through. Creative Faceout Studio / Faceout After moving our design studio to Bend this winter, our first order of business was to seek out some interesting local projects to sink our teeth into. The downside to having a national client base outside of Bend is the lack of day-to-day personal interaction with those we work with every day. So, we began our quest looking for the best clients and the best projects here in Bend. Sounds greedy. One night, after working through several finely crafted beers at Deschutes, we realized that Bend really is an amazing craft brewing town. If we could combine our love of beer with our passion for design, we were on board. Soon thereafter, the wonderful folks at the Old Mill District brought us on board to help re-launch the Bend Brewfest after a one-year hiatus. As a team, we worked on many new logo options, but along with the Old Mill crew felt the mark that said Beer and Bend the best was the beer bottle, smoke stack logo. It was important to establish Bend as a beer destination and to lay the groundwork for a festival that has big plans for the future. In addition to an all new look for this year’s festival, there will be some great merchandise made available. Yeah, stuff you’ll actually want to wear. And as for next year, several ambitious plans are in the works that will bring some unique recognition to the beer industry in this town and, more importantly, the great and colorful characters who are brewing the beers we all love.
