Now in its second year, the community parade will feature works depicting this year’s theme as interpreted by local artists and community members through My Own Two Hands’ Common Canvas Project.

My Own Two Hands Art Stroll Friday, April 9 • 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Stroll through the streets of downtown Sisters, enjoy musical performances at sponsor locations and see displayed art created by professionals and students of the Sisters School District. See the next page of this event guide for a map and a list of stroll locations.

Performing Arts Evening & Chili Feed Friday, April 9 • 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Benefit chili feed at Bronco Billy’s Ranch Grill and Saloon. Music will be provided by students of the Americana Project. Tickets, including entertainment, can be purchased at the door for $10.

My Own Two Hands Art Auction & Party Saturday, April 10 • Starts at 6 p.m.

Benefit art auction and party at Ponderosa Forge & Ironworks includes live and silent auctions for art by local artists and students of the Sisters School District.

The annual fundraising event bringing artists and the community together for the benefit of arts education in Sisters schools.

Central Oregon artists and musicians will be “Traveling Light” this year during the 2010 My Own Two Hands celebration, presented by Sisters Folk Festival. The event benefits the educational outreach program, the Americana Project, which supports all types of art programs within the Sisters School District.

My Own Two Hands will kick off with a community parade, art stroll and Performing Arts Evening and Chili Feed at Bronco Billy’s on Friday, April 9.

It will culminate with the much-anticipated Art Auction and Party on Saturday, April 10, held annually at Ponderosa Forge & Ironworks in Sisters.

Considered a “community-themed art project,” My Own Two Hands offers artists throughout Sisters and Central Oregon an opportunity to participate by creating and donating art pieces around a central theme.

This year’s theme, “Traveling Light,” challenges artists to create and donate work based on their interpretations of the theme, art that will be auctioned off through live and silent auctions during Saturday night’s Art Auction and Party.

According to Brad Tisdel, executive director of the Sisters Folk Festival and co-founder of the Americana Project, the outpouring of community support from the area’s vast arts community offers both stature and heart to My Own Two Hands.

“The generous outpouring of contributions by fantastic artists is humbling and appreciated, and helps us continue to build strong art and music programs in the Sisters Schools and community,” Tisdel said.

More than 100 artists have donated art pieces to My Own Two Hands this year.

“My Own Two Hands reminds us that we can make a difference by contributing, and in turn the whole community benefits with thoughtful, intelligent, inquisitive young people who are talented and connected to their community,” said Tisdel.

Funds raised by the My Own Two Hands event will be used by the Sisters Americana Project to award scholarships to all three Sisters schools, as well as to fund various workshops, after-school art classes, visiting visual and performing artists, materials, and training programs for art teachers.

MISSION: Sisters Americana Project The Sisters Americana Project is the youth educational outreach program of the Sisters Folk Festival. The Americana Project grew out of the belief that the arts can open new horizons for youth, fostering creativity, teaching discipline, improving self-esteem, and challenging students to think in new ways.

The Americana Project is a community and schoolbased program that combines music education, visual arts, and community involvement. Working with community members, the Project helps to foster a connection of local schools and local artists to provide a unique educational experience for students.

Sisters ‘traveling light’ community-wide As part of this year’s My Own Two Hands (MOTH) theme, “Traveling Light,” local artists and community members of all ages have constructed, altered and decorated items with the Common Canvas Project. During a Community Arts Day on March 13, dozens of Sisters residents gathered at Sisters Middle School to create their own masterpieces on a common canvas.

This year’s “canvas” is a tote bag, made by Sue Yocum of Black Crater Clothing in Sisters. The project, which has been part of MOTH for several years, has in the past used masks, mirrors, and even sock dolls as the project’s common canvas.

“This year they are literally on canvas,” said Kit Stafford, an organizer of the event. Stafford, who teaches art classes at Sisters Middle School, worked with other local artist-teachers during the Community Arts Day to help participants decorate their individual pieces. The free public event included all materials and instruction funded by MOTH.

PARADE BEGINS: 4 p.m., Friday, April 9 Many of the participants in the Common Canvas Project will carry their artistic canvas bags during the My Own Two Hands parade on Friday, April 9 at 4 p.m. starting at West Hood Avenue and South Pine Street.

“It’s really a way to celebrate our community and give people a way to participate in the (MOTH) event,” said Stafford.

“There aren’t that many opportunities for different generations to come together,” she said.

The tote bags used as an artistic canvas this year were conceived because they are a utilitarian item and they fit with the “Traveling Light” theme. “The bags go with the theme in the sense that they are environmentally friendly,” said Stafford. “It’s a piece that (participants) can use, reuse and reuse again.”

The Common Canvas Project, added Stafford, “is just another stream that goes into the river that is My Own Two Hands.”

The eight-piece ensemble, founded by Pink Martini trumpet player Gavin Bondy, swings in the magical sounds of Duke Ellington, the big band swing of Benny Goodman and the orchestral soundscapes of Paul Whiteman.

Vocalist and songwriter Melanie Kubik is the centerpiece of each performance.

HONORING BEN WESTLUND: Ben Westlund was an original, a pioneer, a real friend and a lifelong advocate of the Arts and everything good in Oregon.

He and his wife, Libby, worked tirelessly as steadfast supporters of My Own Two Hands, The Americana Project and the music and arts education it provides.

We will miss Ben’s presence and are forever grateful for his encouragement, humor and giving spirit.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Steve Mathews & Roger White, “Rainbow Trout”

TRAVELING the ELECTRIC RAINBOW Sisters artists create stunning piece, merging two unlikely artistic genres.

Who knew such a commonplace name would shroud a collaborative masterpiece?

Steve Mathews and Roger White have been friends for half a decade. Mathews, a fine artist and volunteer art instructor at Sisters High School, and White, who owns the Camp Sherman Store with wife Kathy, had been kicking around the idea of creating a collaborative art piece together for the last few years.

After creating a 5-foot-long cribbage table with carved pelicans that he donated to My

Own Two Hands last year, Mathews decided the time had come.

“We wanted to do something together because we’re both half crazy,” Mathews says.

“The final piece was a 7-foot-long trout with a multi-colored neon rainbow arching over it, backlit with purple neon. It’s pretty hard to miss.”

“Rainbow Trout,” donated to the Americana Project fundraiser, is on display at Sisters Art Works. Mathews has at least 60 hours of time invested in its creation, and White, who has been working in neon for at least 25 years, took five weeks to complete his part of the piece, from concept to completion—interlaced with

“One of my neighbors was taking down a Tamarack tree, so Steve began working with three slabs of wood,” says White. “I had no idea what was coming when he brought his fish by my house in early January. The piece was hanging out of the back of his truck, perfectly symmetrical with multi-technique carvings, colors and designs that interacted with each other. I’d never seen anything like it in my life.”

For his part, White created a rainbow that emerged from the back of the fish’s head to the top of the dorsal fin, morphing into a “windswept” mode with twisted bands of color.

“It’s like the fish hit the rainbow and kept on swimming,” White says.

Resplendent with a neon rainbow and soft purple glow that outlines the entire fish, glass is sandwiched between the art piece and the wall that supports its weight.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Mathews went on to create a larger replica for White’s home and is in the process of crafting another for his own collection.

Describing the collaboration as a “kind of bizarre combination,” Mathews admits there is nothing out there quite like “Rainbow Trout.”

White agrees.

“This is definitely a fish you haven’t seen before,” he said. “It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever worked on with anyone.”

Here’s to a successful marriage of unlikely artistic genres. Opposites do attract.

Sisters to host first Pet Parade

What better day to launch the first Sisters Pet Parade than on Saturday, May, 1 in collaboration with the Sisters May Day Celebration?

Pet lovers will be on hand at 11 a.m. that day along Hood Avenue to show off their furry, fuzzy or funny friends. The parade will end at Village Green Park.

“We’re hoping for between 40 and 45 entries this first year,” said Jeri Buckmann, event director for the Sisters Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re open to any kind of pet, from turtles to giraffes, and are planning on awarding prizes for each category of pet.”

During the May Day Celebration, kids can craft flower May Day baskets or dance around a Maypole, with the option of picnicking in Village Green Park afterward.

Pet Parade enthusiasts will need to call the Chamber in advance to register their pets. Call 541-549-0251 for more information.

The Bus to Success Angeline’s Bakery and Café a Sisters staple

by Kathy Oxborrow, for The Bulletin Angeline Rhett, who owns Angeline’s Bakery and Café, a Sisters staple offering healthy and tasty treats, has just taken her first small-business management class after operating the flourishing business for 13 years.

You know how all those self-help books tell you all you have to do to be successful is follow your passion? Well, Angeline could be the poster woman for that advice.

“I’ve just always had a comfort level with food,” she said. “I like making food for people; it’s fun and it’s a way to socialize.”

The 28-year-old Angeline came to Sisters in the summer of 1995 to fight fires after earning a degree in geography at Portland State University and traveling internationally. At summer’s end she found herself a little strapped for cash so she filled a little red wagon with sandwiches and cookies and pulled it through Sisters selling her creations to merchants, customers and locals.

She noticed a “little hole in the wall” space for rent and decided it was time to go for it and open her bakery.

“It was tiny, you couldn’t get four people to turn around in there, it was so small,” she recalled.

Angeline eventually enlarged the bakery to its current size and it has become the place to go if you want delicious organic, vegan and sugar- and gluten-free food. The bakery also sells items made with dairy, eggs and wheat, but about 90 percent of the baked goods are vegan and gluten free.

A lot of customers don’t even know how healthy they’re eating. They just patronize

the place because everything tastes so good.

The demand for her gluten-free bread began to grow, and places like Whole Foods and Fred Meyer came calling. “The people who owned the fish company in town would haul my stuff to Portland for me. Then I would drive to Portland in my mother-in-law’s Honda and get there at five in the morning and load as much as I could and drive around Portland and deliver it.”

During one of her Portland deliveries she spotted a building with a “for lease” sign. That’s where all the gluten-free bread is now made. She spends part of her week in Portland overseeing bread making.

Angeline says having the Portland operation has made her more disciplined because the bread has to be made the same way every time.

“I can’t follow a recipe to save my life,” she said. “The food here is consistent in spite of me.”

Giving back to the Sisters community is important to Angeline. One of the ways she does that is opening the garden area behind the bakery for a summer concert series called “Festive Fridays.” Sisters Folk Festival performers also use the space. The idea behind Festive Fridays is to create a space where people can bring their kids, enjoy the music, dance and have fun.

What Angeline says she learned in that small business management class was that “I can really steer my bus where I want it. I have the steering power.”

Seems she has been quite adept at doing just that since that January day in 1997 when Angeline’s Bakery and Café first opened its doors.

National Geographic Society honors Sisters by highlighting events The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and the Sisters Folk Festival were among highlighted, “sustainable” locations and attractions featured in National Geographic Society’s newest Geotourism MapGuide showcasing the Central Cascades.

The MapGuide is based on the recommendations of local residents and business owners and showcases more than 200 geotourism sites that feature the culture, landscape and recreational amenities of the Central Cascade areas in Oregon and Washington.

Additionally, the map spotlights outstanding photography from Northwest photographers and cartography for which National Geographic is so well known.

“It is much more than a map,” said Todd Davidson, CEO of Travel Oregon. “Reading the MapGuide, a visitor gains a sense of the Central Cascades area as unique to any other place on Earth. Not only does it inspire travel, but it also instills a desire to celebrate and preserve our singular landscape, culture and regional identity.”

“This is an incredible honor for Sisters and Central Oregon to be included in such a widely read publication,” said Erin Borla, executive director of the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce.

Pulitzer to Present... Cambodia Revisited Sisters Photographer, Jay Mather, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for International Reporting for his coverage with Joel Brinkley (son of acclaimed news broadcaster David Brinkley) of the refugee camps in Cambodia.

The two reporters returned to Cambodia in 2009 to document the changes over the past 30 years.

Jay Mather will present a lecture at Sisters Art Works on April 23rd at 7pm. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
