WELCOME It gives me great pleasure to introduce our programme for spring 2012, following our highly successful 10th anniversary year in 2011 where highlights included sell out productions of Guys and Dolls and a brand new musical 20th Century Boy which broke all Box Office records and played to near capacity throughout. This new season promises to be just as exciting, including the return of Reasons To Be Cheerful, our co-production with Graeae Theatre Company, based around the songs of Ian Dury, prior to a national tour; a new show from our Associate Company, Gecko, titled Missing, which is also touring nationally and a revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s classic Bedroom Farce. As always we are grateful for your support and I hope that you will find a number of things in this seasons programme to excite and entice you. Maybe you will be the one to purchase our 1,000,000th ticket! I look forward to seeing you here again in spring 2012. Peter Rowe Artistic Director

NEW VERSION BY / Stephen Lowe
 DIRECTED BY / Louise Townsend

This adaptation of Robert Tressell’s famous novel is a hilarious fast-paced show that shares with its audience a year in the life of a group of painters and decorators, as they renovate a three-storey town house for Mayor Sweater. It traces their struggle for survival in a complacent and stagnating Edwardian England. These workers are the ‘philanthropists’ who throw themselves into back-breaking work for poverty wages in order to generate profit for their masters. This vibrant, lively story is brought to life by two hugely talented and experienced performers using comedy routines, entertaining songs and live music from the Music Hall and uplifting hymns from the chapel sung in graceful harmony. “The decorators are brought to life in a dazzling array of characters and presented with theatrical skill and good humour.” The Stage www.townsendproductions.org.uk TIME / 7.45pm POST-SHOW TALK / Fri

Automated doors installed at the NEW WOLSEY THEATRE The New Wolsey Theatre’s commitment to access was further realised this autumn with the installation of automated front doors. ‘Access for all’ is one of the New Wolsey Theatre’s principle objectives and significant improvements have been made to and around the building in recent years including additional companion seating, the installation of a lift, external ramps and a greater variety of accessible performances. The introduction of automated doors was funded by the Ipswich Borough Council's Local Strategic Partnership. Councillor David Ellesmere, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council and Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership, said:

“We want to make sure that as many people as possible can enjoy the great shows at the New Wolsey. This is a positive move and we are very happy to support it.”

Access Officer Kelly Kirkbride, Ipswich Borough Councillor Bryony Rudkin, Patron Stevie Francis with ILF Worker Charles Mugleston and New Wolsey Chief Executive Sarah Holmes

Chief Executive Sarah Holmes (pictured) is proud of the theatre’s achievements to date but eager to point out that access at the rear of the building is still severely restricted.

“Audience access has been a priority but improving access at the rear of the building for staff, performers and visitors is next on the agenda. We have made some headway and plans have been drawn up but we need to raise the funds to realise them. If anyone can suggest ways to do this, or wishes to support this project, we would be very pleased to hear from you.”

Audience Feedback We welcome your feedback on any aspect of our service and here we share some of the comments we have received:

“I wish other sectors of entertainment took a leaf out of your book…The touch tours of the set give a real sense of picturing the scene, it puts an image into your mind and makes you a part of what is going on all around you.” Maggie Davy, Hadleigh “…the interpreter does such an excellent job, she has my greatest admiration and this is a tremendous asset to deaf and hard of hearing people. Without this being available we would have to travel miles to find an excellent facility like this.” Mrs Janice Scott, Great Blakenham “Although most television programmes are now subtitled and also DVDs nothing can beat a live performance that she could follow word for word. Absolutely brilliant!.” Mr D Godbold, Ipswich

WAITING FOR GODOT BY / Samuel

Beckett

"To-morrow, when I wake, or think I do, what shall I say of to-day?" Two homeless men, Vladimir and Estragon, wait on a bare road with a single tree. Over two days they argue, get bored, clown around, repeat themselves, contemplate death and wait. They are waiting for the one who never comes.

E S D AY S

They are waiting for Godot. Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot is one of the most significant English language plays of the 20th Century. The play gently and intelligently speaks about what it is to be human. Its brilliance lies in its subtly; it is endlessly elusive and yet universal. THU 19 APRIL to SAT 12 MAY THE NEW WOLSEY THEATRE presents

BEDROOM FARCE BY / Alan Ayckbourn

Mining the same rich comic vein as A Chorus Of Disapproval and Noises Off, Ayckbourn's classic farce shows how four couples into three bedrooms simply won't go. Trevor and Susannah are having marital problems - again. Rowing, making up, sulking, shouting, flirting, fighting - and always in other people's bedrooms. Their friends, their parents, their ex'es, and their in-laws all have their cosy bedrooms and their comfortable relationships thrown into turmoil by this tempestuous relationship. During one chaotic night we see the action unfold in three separate bedrooms, as Trevor and Susannah wreak havoc on the sleep, security and soft furnishings of all those around them. And of course, the only ones who end up in harmony and in bed are - Trevor and Susannah. Ingenious, inventive and incredibly funny. “He [Ayckbourn] has an acute observation of people and their multiple vulnerable points, an uncanny ear for the subtleties of conversation. Yet even when he is showing us foolishness, he is humorously aware of the inadequacies of man and woman, and above all else his characters are warm and lovable human beings.
