Escalator has been supporting performing artists and companies from the East of England since 2003 to investigate their practice and undertake a creative journey. The programme identifies nurtures and invests in talented practitioners across art-forms who want to develop artistically and establish a market place for their work. Escalator Performing Arts provides artists with time and space to play, test ideas and explore new directions. The emphasis is not on a final ‘product’ but the ‘process’ encouraging artists to collaborate, take risks and embrace mistakes. The programme responds to the individual; offering learning plans, one-on-one mentoring from practicing artists, artist led training, links to useful networks and platform opportunities to present ideas and work in progress. Highlights include live artist Holly Darton making the shift to become a solo practitioner and urban dance artist and Tom Dale, trying a series of ‘happenings’ in club spaces. Escalator East to Edinburgh prepares artists and companies for the Edinburgh Festivals and beyond. It aims to make the exhausting Edinburgh experience more enjoyable and less isolating by providing press and PR, promoter liaison, marketing and a creative community of support up at the Fringe. The programme has previously championed Hoipolloi, NIE and Gecko and in 2010 we are delighted to be taking 20 diverse shows up to the Festival, 8 of which you can see in PULSE - look for this logo on the following pages:
Escalator East to Edinburgh and Escalator Performing Arts is managed by The Junction in partnership with Colchester Arts Centre. The development scheme is supported by Arts Council England, East.
“Escalator is an excellent scheme that has enabled Hoipolloi to develop our creativity, hone our producing skills and, perhaps most importantly, share our knowledge and experience with emerging talent in the region.” Simon Bedford, Producer: Hoipolloi For more info contact: kate@junction.co.uk www.junction.co.uk www.easttoedinburgh.co.uk

Not one for looking back, Bryony was faced with the arduous task of re-tracing her sexual footsteps to see where she may have contracted her little problem. This performance is about her journey… along the way she will reminisce, tell the forbidden truths and in some cases apologise wholeheartedly for the things she has done in the name of sexual conquest and love. In 1976, the best ever Polish football team played against arguably the best ever Iranian football team in the Montreal Olympics. This match featured the world renowned players Tomaszewski, Lato and Deyna for Poland as well as the great Ali Parvin for Iran, nicknamed ‘The Sultan’. Such a clash of talent led to a memorable game with Poland edging to a 3-2 win against Iran and going on to gain the Silver medal. Handheld Arts Collective presents
A work in development One thousand origami birds can grant a soul one wish. Or so it is said. A story told can be traded for food. A newspaper can be made into clothes. And a man who fought for his nation can return to find he no longer fits his old life - he has grown too big, too small, too creased for the smoothness of his old routines. But where do you go when you slip between the folds? Through a blend of visual media, animation, object manipulation and original music, Handheld Arts tells the story of Paper Tom – a homeless man who clothed himself in the stories of other people’s lives and traded tales for food. Taking the audience by the hand on a journey spanning time and place, we explore the space between spaces, and the moments of transformation where a single piece of paper can become a bird, or a memory can become a reality…

Certain Dark Things is an intimate and powerful family drama set under Franco’s religious dictatorship of the 1950s, featuring the company’s trademark ‘in the round’ performance, beautiful live music, and magically inventive storytelling. Two hundred years ago, twenty-two miles out to sea, two men live and work in a wooden box fifteen feet across, seventy feet above the dark ocean‌ Using little more than a ladder and a pair of creaky chairs, two performers and a musician conjure up the confines of the infamous Smalls Lighthouse, and the remarkable true-story it guards. A tale of companionship and loss unfolds over the slow passing of days, and in the sweeping flashes of the lamp that the keepers tend each and every night. The Plasticine Men are a collective of theatre-smiths, scouring the land for stories that beg to be told onstage. They challenge themselves to simply create the extraordinary worlds that lurk on the edge of hearsay and history. This revival of Keefe’s 1979 classic coincides with the general election of 2010. “Police forces face threat of racist label over stop and searches” Guardian, March 2010. What’s changed? Barrie Keefe’s highly praised works include the cult classic film The Long Good Friday as well as the much performed plays Gotcha, Gimme Shelter and Barbarians. First seen at the Young Vic in 2009, SUS is the first co-production between Young Vic and eclipse theatre (The Hounding of David Oluwale, Angel House), a company with a national reputation for producing high quality, culturally diverse theatre productions and projects across the country.

NEW WOLSEY THEATRE DATE: Fri 4 June TIME: 8pm TICKETS: £8
Das (ist) ein… is inspired by Tractatus Logicophilosophicus by the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. This work is the second part of the S series a trilogy investigating paths of connection between philosophy and the body.
44
Focusing on the body within a philosophical and a choreographic context, this work asks questions about dance, language and articulation of content. At the same time the solos ask questions about the self: testing languages in order to express its self, about being, about becoming... How does thought become movement? The body arrives at a landscape where desire of articulating thought resembles a silent cry, like a figure out of Francis Bacon. Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent. “Mariela Nestora’ s work shows invention, risk and humour, but perhaps most important of all, a rare originality.” www.yelpdanceco.gr Please note that Das (ist) ein… is recommended for ages 13+

Isn’t there in all of us that need to be nurtured, to be reassured, to know that there is someone whose love is unconditional? This piece depicts the switch-over point: when a mother who has given all her life now needs care and love herself. It’s often upsetting and untimely, but also very frustrating for those around. At the heart of this play is the life of 85 year old Nora Giddings. Her daughter, Caroline, the once lively, creative woman has been slowly disappearing for the past couple of years, but her decline has become now more worrying. Caroline now suspects that her mother is not coping well with day to day living. Up until now, she has been only too willing to be convinced that Nora is managing.

Hydrocracker presents
By: Neil Fleming “Do you have the slightest idea how hard it is to change something?… Really change it? A plan, a company, a human soul?” Meet James Brown. Charismatic, foul-mouthed, brilliant. Meet Leif, wunderkind of statistics and stochastics. Meet Nicola, precocious, attractive, ambitious as hell. They are the Consultants. Invisible and unaccountable, consultants are everywhere, whispering in the ear of corporations, banks, governments. Once they move in, they never leave. Rain from a Dry Sky is the story of a weak man who wants to be strong, a chief executive who gambles everything – his business, his marriage, his happiness – on a deal with the devil. Faced with corporate and personal disaster, Hugo Shackleton brings in Brown and his team to transform his fortunes. But will he survive a move to the most dangerous strategy of all? Hydrocracker’s work is “an alliance between formal experiment and rich content” Michael Billington, The Guardian “The clever Hydrocracker company... brilliantly bullies its audience into hilarious subjection.” Susannah Clap, The Observer on The Erpingham Camp www.hydrocracker.co.uk Performed reading. Katherine May and Nimble Fish present
“Last night, I dreamed of a room that overlooked the sea. I’d never been there before, but I knew it well…” In Burning Out, Katherine May guides us through a dream-like landscape, immersing us in the story of two women linked by an invisible thread. We are invited to peer inside the author’s world as she creates and manipulates her characters. Burning Out challenges the traditional author reading, drawing in bespoke sound (designed by Tim Blazdell) and live video performance. It invites new audiences into literary performance, including those who will never read the book. Burning Out is the first production by The Re:Authoring Project, a collective set up by Katherine May and cultural producers Nimble Fish to develop more engaging ways to bring books to a live audience. Part musical, part dream play, Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls is a magical realist story of forbidden love, criminality and the possibility of finding redemption in the unlikeliest of places. Exquisitely designed by Laura Hopkins, the audience watch the action through the bar’s window, as a carnival of unsavoury characters reveal themselves and haunting tales of murder, love and forgiveness unfold. Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls is a new theatre show and workshop project made as a collaboration between The National Theatre of Greece, Cyprus Theatre Organisation and imitating the dog as part of the British Council Creative Collaboration programme. “imitating the dog, a company at the forefront of testing the nature of theatre” The Guardian imitating the dog experiment with the role of story-telling and narrative in contemporary theatre. They make innovative use of digital media, design and physical performance to create offkilter worlds in which to explore public and private obsessions. www.imitatingthedog.co.uk www.talesfromthebaroflostsouls.com

Dafydd James and Ben Lewis in association with Notebook presents
The cult hit of last year’s Edinburgh Festival, My Name Is Sue tells the story of the piano-wielding prophet from Wales who has so far kept her thoughts to herself. But now she has cleared her throat and is ready to sing. She cordially invites you into her lounge to sing you through her life from finishing school to doomsday. With virtuosic piano skill, a soaring falsetto and her faithful backing band, Sue brings to life tales of economic bus travel, tragic schoolgirl longing, a Cardiff-based Armageddon and the work of Julia Roberts. An unforgettable hour of comedy/tragedy/music/theatre/cabaret. “Pleasingly daft, inconsequential and brilliant” The Guardian “Hysterically funny and beautifully played” Time Out “Certainly one of the most unusual, remarkable and memorable hours on the fringe” The Stage “Funny, tragic, insane and endearing all at the same time” The Metro Winner of the Total Theatre Award 2009 for Theatre & Music Recommended for ages 13+
