From the President

Dear Wesleyan Alumnae,

Since the day I set foot on campus, I have felt nothing but welcome by Wesleyan Alumnae. You are a truly incredible group, and your bond is nothing short of amazing.

In the months since I began my role as this College’s 26th president, I have been working hard to assess all aspects of the institution. What’s clear is that our alumnae network is one of our greatest assets. As I work to recruit new students, expand our capacity, and build our brand both at home and internationally, I know that our alumnae will be a key part of the story we have to tell.

I know many of you have questions about the strategic direction of Wesleyan College. In order for you to be part of this journey, we need to tell you about where we are going. Throughout this edition of WESmag, you’ll hear about our bold new direction for the College and what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last few months. I hope you’ll also find places where you can contribute.

In the coming months, I look forward to meeting many of you at Alumnae Weekend, at Alumnae Night at the Macon Bacon game, or at one of the countless events we have scheduled across the country.

Thank you for your continued dedication and support, and for making Wesleyan College proud.

Sincerely,

Meet Wesleyan’s 26th president

Meaghan Blight

President Meaghan Blight credits her grandmother with getting her to the position she holds today.

“My grandmother used to sit me at the dinner table with a full place setting laid out in front of me,” she says. Despite the fact that our family didn’t have much, she told me I needed to learn how to be comfortable at a fancy dinner.

She said she didn’t want me to be embarrassed, not if, but when I found myself with a seat at the table.”

This is the mentality Blight hopes to impart to the students who attend Wesleyan College during her tenure as our 26th president.

WESmag 2023

Blight grew up in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, a largely working class community about 50 miles north of Toronto, the country’s largest city. Meaghan's family regarded education as a considerable expense for lower-income folks like them. However, her grandmother continually emphasized academic achievement as a means to scholarships and postsecondary education as a path to success.

“She would show me viewbooks from Canadian universities and tell me this was my way out,” says Blight.

Blight went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in political science from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from the Lang School of Business and Economics at Ontario’s University of Guelph. Her commitment to higher education as a means of changing lives continued in advancement roles at the University of Calgary and as Vice President, University Growth and Chief of Staff at Huron University College where she honed her views on the value of education in a small, engaged community.

"OUR MISSION IS CLEAR.

WE ARE INTENTIONAL ABOUT RECRUITING WOMEN FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE WHO ARE GOING TO ACCELERATE EQUALITY. WE SUPPORT, NURTURE, AND DEVELOP WOMEN WHO GRADUATE TO LEAD IN THE BOARDROOM, IN THE CLASSROOM, IN THE OPERATING ROOM, AND EVERYWHERE IN BETWEEN. THESE WOMEN ARE GOING TO MOVE THE NEEDLE ON GENDER PARITY AROUND THE WORLD.”

WESmag 2023
-

This idea is what brought her to Wesleyan College. The appeal of a women's college with strategically small class sizes is that it allows young women to hone their skills as leaders while earning a world class education, providing an opportunity to change the economic landscape for women of all backgrounds.

“Education is a game changer in a woman’s life,” she says. “The women we are attracting are committed to the pursuit of gender equality and know that the best way to reach parity is through the advancement of uniquely female spaces and places that make room for their perspectives and autonomy.”

"As an undergraduate, I spent four years in the back of a 400-person lecture hall acting as a passive receptacle for information and not really engaging in my learning," she says. "What if we could propel young women into leadership positions by building their confidence and their competencies with intentionality and individual attention?"
6

Blight is a newcomer to Middle Georgia, having moved to the region in July 2022 with her husband Kyle, her sons Jake and Cole, and her dogs, Ruby and Walter. While her oldest has traded hockey skates for football cleats, the Canadian-born family has still managed to find rinks close to home.

“Kyle has started a youth hockey/learn to skate program in Macon and has already joined a men’s hockey league up in Atlanta, and the boys love sitting in the stands at the Macon Mayhem,” she says. “You can take the family out of Canada, but you can never take Canada out of the family.”

Still, Blight and her family are embracing the life and culture in Georgia, and she is looking forward to attending as many Wolves games as she can and connecting with Wesleyan students and alumnae.

"I EXTEND MY SINCEREST GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION TO MY PREDECESSORS, WHOSE DEDICATION AND LEADERSHIP HAVE SET THE FOUNDATION FOR OUR CONTINUED SUCCESS." - Meaghan Blight

8

Moment

WHETHER YOU’RE TALKING TO THE CLASS OF 1973 OR THE CLASS OF 2023, EVERYONE HAS THE SAME QUESTIONS – “WHERE IS WESLEYAN COLLEGE GOING? WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?”

As Wesleyan enters its 187th year, what’s clear is that everyone – alumnae, students, and community members alike – is excited about the future of our school. This is a pivotal year for us. Through a new agenda that embraces our history and makes it relevant to our present, we believe we are at the forefront of another two centuries of success.

WESmag 2023

ACCELERATING EQUALITY

SINCE 1836

This starts by leaning into the rich history and the tenets on which we were founded. Wesleyan College has always been at the forefront of accelerating equality for women. We are the first institution in the world chartered to grant degrees to women – a distinction that is uniquely ours. At the time, our College was considered quite radical in its ideas, offering the women who attended courses in foreign languages, philosophy, religion, and science. Over the years, our demographics and our offerings have changed as we pushed to see women in more significant leadership roles, and our graduates have always excelled. Wesleyan has graduated doctors, lawyers, scientists, artists, and teachers who have made their mark on their professions. We have continuously educated women to be leaders in whatever fields they pursue.

10

NOW IS THE TIME

TO DOUBLE DOWN ON THAT MISSION.

Right now, the world is emerging from a pandemic that deeply and disproportionately affected women. According to research, between February and August 2020, American mothers of children aged 12 and under lost 2.2 million jobs compared to 870,000 lost by fathers. At the same time, working mothers reported seeing their daily work increase significantly more than fathers, as women bore extra childcare responsibilities when schools shut down.

The result:

This is far too long. At Wesleyan, we want to see gender parity in our lifetimes. To make this happen, the world needs the expertise of an educational institution that has specialized in accelerating equality for women for nearly 200 years.

FINDING Willing LEADERS

In order to move the needle on gender parity, Wesleyan College is choosing to focus on the young women who demonstrate potential but need that extra level of support to find their voices. We’re looking for willing leaders – the students who want to lead and who will genuinely benefit from the specialized attention of a women’s college.

These students will benefit from individualized attention and mentorship that builds confidence. By seeing successful women in top administrative roles, learning from innovative, educated female faculty at the front of the classroom, and getting guidance from our impressive alumnae network, our students will graduate with the knowledge that they can lead in any industry across the globe.

According to the World Economic Forum, it will take 136 years to achieve gender parity in the workforce, a number that has increased since the pandemic.
WESmag 2023

A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN HISTORY

Not only do we recognize this moment in our history, but 2023 is also a pivotal year for our hometown. As Macon enters its bicentennial year and the impact of downtown revitalization brings a new vibrancy to the city, it’s abundantly clear there is excitement across the region.

12

It’s important that our students feel pride in the role the women before them played in shaping this city in order for them to strive to become leaders in its future. As an institution, we need to lead by example. That’s why Wesleyan is recommitting to our presence in the Heart of Georgia.

Throughout the year, you will see Wesleyan at significant events like the Cherry Blossom Festival and the Christmas light display. At the same time, we’re thrilled to be making new partnerships and refreshing old ones across our Macon community.

Wesleyan College will host numerous events celebrating Macon’s bicentennial and the city’s history. We’re also working with the Macon Transit Authority to increase transit options between our campus and the downtown to allow our students better access to all the city offers.

Finally, we are launching a new partnership with the Macon Bacon baseball team to connect with families, highlight our own Wesleyan Wolves, and give our alumnae and friends a fun place to come together.

Join us for a Macon Bacon game at Luther Williams Field on June 24, 2023, for Wesleyan Alumnae Night. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends and find out what's new at Wesleyan College.

A newly renovatedCANDLER ALUMNAE

Those attending Alumnae Weekend in April will have an opportunity to see firsthand the newly renovated Candler Alumnae Building. Work began in May of 2022 by Spillers Design and Construction LLC and is now complete. A rededication service will take place during Alumnae Weekend at 2:30 Saturday, April 22nd, in Oval Hall, now the Katharine Payne Carnes Oval Hall, newly renamed for Wesleyan’s legendary librarian, a 1913 graduate of Wesleyan, who served in that position from 1919-1959. Special guests will include donors whose designated gifts made the renovation possible. All interested alumnae are invited to attend the event and will have an opportunity to tour the building.

18

ALUMNAE BUILDING

The Candler Building is part of the Wesleyan College Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places, which includes the entire 200-plus acre campus and arboretum. Part of the 1928 campus, the Candler Memorial Library was a gift to Wesleyan College by Judge John Slaughter Candler in memory of his parents, Samuel Charles Candler and Martha Beall Candler. Noted Atlanta architect Philip Trammell Shutze designed the library to be compatible with the Georgian Revivalstyle architecture of the new campus.

The two-story Candler Building has a portico with four Ionic columns. Curving stairs on either side provide entry to the upper story main level. The lower level of the portico has three arches; a doorway through the central one accesses the lower level.

A concrete stringcourse and keystones over the windows provide additional decorative elements. The oval hall on the main floor originally served as the library’s reading room and was furnished with sixteen reading tables, each seating eight students, and four individual tables, all equipped with specially selected reading lamps. A smaller reading room seated 65 students, and a study room seated 30 girls. Miss Carnes, Class of 1913, served as Wesleyan’s librarian from 1919 until her retirement in 1959.

When the Willet Library was constructed in 1968, the Candler Building became the alumnae center. In addition to serving as the alumnae center and venue for Wesleyan events, the building today houses Wesleyan’s Office of Institutional Advancement.

Wesleyan College 1836 - 2022:

186 Years in 186 Artifacts

For 186 years, Wesleyan College has been accelerating equality for women. Now, we are telling the story of the College through its history in our latest project: Wesleyan College 1836 - 2022: 186 Years in 186 Artifacts.

Wesleyan College's Archives and Special Collections Archivist Virginia Blake and Library Director Kristina Peavy have curated this project over the course of almost two years. This project showcases 186 artifacts representing significant events and time periods in Wesleyan's

history. Through this exhibit, Wesleyan's story of race, advocacy, class names, traditions, and student experiences comes to life.

In 2020, Wesleyan College was granted a “Reframing the Institutional Saga” grant from the Network of Vocational Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) through the Council of Independent Colleges. In addition to exploring the racial history of Wesleyan College, this project connects who we are today as an institution with who we were and

explores all the ways we have evolved. It builds upon an earlier publication by Dr. Samuel Akers, The First Hundred Years of Wesleyan College

Artifacts include Catherine Brewer Benson’s diploma, the Soong Sisters’ cap and gown and collection, student publications including yearbooks, magazines, and newspapers, Class of 1926 class rings, and many other Wesleyan treasures.

STUNT is back!

Singing, dancing, class cheers, inside jokes, and lots of belly laughs were had during this year’s 2023 STUNT. It’s the first time since 2020 that the classes were able to come together for this fun-filled night of laughter and sisterhood.

“This was the first time since COVID-19 that I have experienced bonding and sisterhood like this at Wesleyan,” said Wesleyan junior and 2023 STUNT Chair Jessie Hurst.

“I grew up watching STUNT so I’ve known

This year, the Red and Golden Classes and Purple and Green Classes paired up to compete against their fellow sisters. Faculty and staff were also hands on this year, assisting students throughout the process and taking part in the “Staff Scotts,” formerly known as the “Faculty Follies.” Highlights of the night included a performance featuring President Blight and her dog Ruby, as well as the faculty and staff rendition of “Wild, Wild, Wesleyan,” written by former Wesleyan English professor, Darlene Mettler.

The 2023 “Most Class Spirit” winners were the Red Class. The 2023 “Stunt Cup” winners were the Red (Senior) and Golden (Sophomore) Classes.

STUNT PR Chair and Green Class Junior Brandi Underwood says that the turnout and participation were even better than expected.

“School spirit is a big thing. I wanted to make sure that we got the momentum up and that students will want to continue this again,” Underwood said.

“Keeping up the tradition and excitement, but also modernizing it…” is what Underwood wanted to focus on this year. She was also in charge of the shirt design, sales, distribution, and the advertisements and sponsorships that came from alumnae and local businesses.

The entire STUNT Committee would like to thank all of this year’s donors and participating businesses for their support. Local businesses include: The Macon Baking Company, Apparel Authority, Women’s Health Institute and Take Flight Performing Arts.

Plan to attend Wesleyan’s next STUNT event on February 24, 2024.

GEORGIA WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT 2023 HALL OF FAME HONORS EDUCATOR AND ACTIVIST, DOROTHY ROGERS TILLY, CLASS OF 1901.

At the suggestion of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Georgia Women of Achievement was organized in 1988 to honor women who have made significant contributions to the State of Georgia. The organization’s first induction ceremony was held at Wesleyan College in 1992 and since then more than 100 exceptional women have been honored.

On March 8, 2023, during Women's History Month, Georgia Women of Achievement inducted Wesleyan alumna Dorothy Rogers Tilly, Class of 1901, into the Georgia Women of Achievement Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in Pierce Chapel. Nominated by the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association, Dorothy Tilly was recognized for her work as an activist and educator who advocated for educational, social, and racial equality and justice not only in Georgia but also across the country. She was a trailblazer of the Civil Rights Movement. During her career, two Presidents of the United States, Harry Truman and John Kennedy, tapped her to serve on civil rights committees during their administrations. Her story is an important one. Wesleyan College is proud to call her an alumna.

Dr. Robert K. Ackerman

(October 26, 1933 – October 3, 2022)

Wesleyan College mourns the passing on October 3rd of Robert K. Ackerman, Wesleyan’s 22nd president (1984-1997). Dr. Ackerman’s tenure was marked by his calm, strong, steady leadership, which brought stability to the campus, strengthened the College’s relationship with the United Methodist Church, and created a focused academic program. Under his direction, alumnae of the College through the “Tradition and Vision” campaign raised significant funds to establish several new academic chairs. The College also renewed the annual baccalaureate service preceding commencement, including the traditional march by graduating seniors and faculty from the College’s original site on College Street to Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. Dr. Ackerman encouraged an emphasis on technology with a program that provided every Wesleyan student

her own computer. He strengthened the academic program with the establishment of the first-year seminar, still a hallmark of the Wesleyan experience. In recognition of his role in expanding Wesleyan’s ties with the United Methodist Church, the Board of Trustees named the chaplaincy chair in his honor upon his retirement. Later the name of legendary chaplain Bill Hurdle was added, creating the Robert K. Ackerman/William Hurdle Chaplaincy Chair. Following his retirement, Dr. Ackerman and his wife May continued to be enthusiastic supporters of the College, including as Friends of Pierce Chapel. Dr. Ackerman often returned to the Wesleyan campus, participating in the inaugurations of the next three Wesleyan presidents. We extend our deepest sympathy to May, who is an honorary alumna of Wesleyan, and to their family.

Eleanor Adams Scott Lane, Class of 1958

(August 29, 1936 – July 31, 2022)

Council of World Affairs, Georgia Women of Achievement, Career Women’s Network, Macon Food Bank and many other worthy groups. She was committed to her church, Vineville United Methodist, serving in a variety of capacities. As a Wesleyan alumna, Eleanor held a number of positions with her alma mater including class liaison, reunion co-chair, and chair of the Wesleyan Sesquicentennial Observance committee. She served two stints as a Trustee, chairing both the Buildings and Grounds and Academic Affairs committees. In 2006, Wesleyan’s Center for Community Engagement and Service was named for the Lane family, whose members have served and supported Wesleyan for more than a century. Eleanor herself embodied the ideals of the Center and was an active participant for years with the children of Aunt Maggie’s Kitchen Table, the signature program of the Center. Later, Eleanor happily supported the use of the family name when the

Center’s purpose was re-envisioned as the Lane Center for Social and Racial Equity. Honored by the Wesleyan College Alumnae Association with the Distinguished Service Award (1980) and the Valeria McCullough Murphey Award (2008), Eleanor also received the first Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award given by Wesleyan College for outstanding community service at a special dinner on Benefactors’ Day in 2016. On that occasion, President Ruth Knox expressed the feelings of Eleanor’s Wesleyan family when she said: “In recognition of your lifetime of leadership and service to the community and your continuous expressions of exemplary character and spiritual values, we are delighted to honor you this evening as the Wesleyan Benefactor of 2016 and to present to you Wesleyan’s first Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. We thank you for being a model Wesleyan Woman and for sharing yourself so generously with us all. We love and admire you and are so very grateful that you are ours!”

WESmag 2023
“As a Society member, I reflect upon Wesleyan as a period in my life where I was given needed direction and a safe place to explore new concepts and abstract thinking all within a supportive extended family. Wesleyan nourished my thoughts, fed my soul, and heightened my aspirations. My hope is that this gift, along with the gifts of other members, will help to continue this legacy for more women.”

Wesleyan Star

Established in 2014 to recognize those alumnae just beginning to support Wesleyan in consecutive years, the Wesleyan Star honors alumnae who have given for two, three, or four consecutive years. Special recognition of Wesleyan Stars includes a M following their names in the alumnae Class Giving section and special recognition during Alumnae Weekend.

Love X 5

For the past 26 years, the Love X 5 program has been recognizing our faithful alumnae who have made a gift to Wesleyan for five or more consecutive years. In recognition of their loyalty to Wesleyan, these faithful donors are honored with a ❤ following their names in the alumnae Class Giving section. When attending Alumnae Weekend, Love X 5 faithful are also presented with a special pin honoring their continued support of their alma mater.

Winner’s Circle

A 2014 addition to our recognition of consecutiveyear donors includes the Winner’s Circle. These faithful alumnae have supported Wesleyan with gifts for ten to nineteen consecutive years. To recognize this loyalty, Winner’s Circle faithful are honored with a following their name in the alumnae Class Giving section, as well as special recognition during Alumnae Weekend.

Stanback Society

Established in 2001, the Stanback Society recognizes alumnae who have given to Wesleyan for twenty or more consecutive years. These faithful donors are honored with a following their names in the alumnae Class Giving Section. The Stanback Society is named in honor of Florence Elizabeth Cawthon Stanback who contributed to the Annual Fund faithfully, giving every year from her graduation in 1925 until her death in 2002.

Forever First Society

Because we are forever grateful for those who remember Wesleyan with a planned gift, these alumnae are now recognized in the Class Giving section. The names of current Society members will appear in bold typeface and those from whom we have received a legacy gift will appear in italics.
