What a year 2017 was! First off, we know without a doubt, we cannot do this without all of our AMAZING VOLUNTEERS and DONORS - Thank you, Thank You, Thank You! We hope you are highly encouraged and stoked to scroll through this magazine as we highlight all of the events. You can literally see the impact just by looking at the photos. We are constantly reminded that these simple water therapy sessions have the ability to break barriers for both the youth we serve and our amazing volunteers that are serving them. Check out the impact we were able to have on both the East Coast and West Coast! Florida Chapter: 231 Foster Youth Served by a total of 222 Volunteers! 3 Youth enrolled in our Hanai Program San Diego Chapter 407 Foster Youth Served by a total of 717 Volunteers! 9 Youth taken to Hawaii through “Dreaming of Aloha” program In 2017 our San Diego chapter lead by both Craig Jenkins and Saya Nodera, who’s passion and love for our youth has raised the bar in several areas: • Fully functioning and highly engaged US4K Board • Established incredible Corporate relationships lead by Reef and Board and Brew. • Applied and received several grants • Developed Hanai Mentoring and training program to empower volunteer base. In 2017 our Central Florida lead by program director Jake Broderick in addition to my incredible wife and myself, were able to solidify our program within the community. Highlights include:
2
• Expanding the awareness of our program across Central Florida. • 2nd annual Surf with Cop sponsored by local top cop’s including Sheriff Michael Chitwood. • Launched our “Dreaming of Puerto Rico” achievement program. It was indeed an amazing year with a record number of youth served. As we paddle into 2018, we are looking to push further and further into both the foster care circle and the surfing community. Our goal is for water therapy to become a viable option for EVERY SINGLE FOSTER YOUTH! As always we encourage you to get involved and help us change the lives of our youth through water therapy and mentoring. Check out our calendar of events and look forward to seeing you in the water!
Mahalo Stay stoked my friends!

Uncorked event: We couldn’t feel more blessed to have been chosen as the beneficiary again for this year’s Uncorked Wine Festival. We were able to raise 10k in donations to continue to support our programs and surf camp. We had over 30 volunteers donate their time to Urban Surf 4 Kids at the wine festival. Needless to say, we are so happy and lucky to have such an incredible Ohana. Big thanks to Michelle from Uncorked for supporting local foster youth! 20

We are always so humbled by the amount of support and STOKE that is shown at our surf camps. We had over 50 foster youth join us and over 70 volunteers! The day was filled with fun, waves, sunshine, Board and Brew sandwiches, and lots of OHANA love. We can’t wait for our next camp on June 17th! 24

WARM WATER, TROPICAL ADVENTURE, UNCROWDED WAVES. THIS IS SURFER PARADISE. Open since 1998 and located on a small private island off the coast of Panama (Central America), it is a paradise worth discovering! The Surfer Paradise Surf Camp is actually two islands. One being the big island and then a smaller outer island. The big island has the living accommodations. Private cabanas are located on the side of a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, each with your very own hammock
for that afternoon siesta. Water is supplied by a fresh water spring that is used for drinking and showering. There are left breaks, and right breaks. Beginner breaks, experienced breaks, and advanced surfer breaks. If your looking for adventure, fun, and SURF, this is the place to visit.

International Surfing Day was established in 2004 by Surfing Magazine and The Surfrider Foundation. It is a global event that celebrates surfing, the surfing lifestyle as well as the sustainability of ocean resources. The day also helps to attract new participants in surfing and all the joy it brings. This year International Surfing Day was on June 17th and US4K held three events, two in California and one in Florida. This was a first for us and it is only possible because of our incredible Ohana. San Diego hosted Socal Surf with a dog day at the OB Dog Beach with the SOCAL Surf Dogs. This unique opportunity allowed the youth to not only surf but to share the ride with a dog on the nose of the board.
l Surfing Day-6/17 By Jake Broderick
Newport Beach US4K partnered with Surfrider Foundation, Hurley and Erik Nelson Surf Camps after the youth were given surf lessons and tips from professional surfer Brett Simpson they showed their appreciation by cleaning up the very beaches they rode the waves on. In Orlando US4K partnered with Orlando Watersports Complex to give the youth a day of Stand Up Paddleboarding, laughs, games, fun and of course, the belly flop contest. The US4K volunteers and donors make sacrifices whether it is a Saturday afternoon, financial sacrifices or donating food, all for the same purpose, the youth. The look on their faces when they stand up on the board makes everything worth it. At the SUP Day in Orlando I had a group of boys who have been to almost every event in Florida come up and ask me “When’s the next surf day?” I answered “in a couple months’” this was not close enough for them and one of the boys said “Jake, let’s do one in July.” Seeing how stoked they were, I went back to the Ohana Center on Monday morning and began to plan an event that would be sooner. No matter the event or where it takes place our Ohana continues to grow. People who are sunburnt, exhausted, sore and really tired still have a smile that runs ear to ear always ask the same question as they leave an event, how can we continue to have this feeling? The answer is simple come back again. You may have thought you were coming to give back to the youth but as you leave you realize how much more you have received from them as well as the fact you are now a part of a new Ohana made up of like minded just like you.. US4K can not wait to see what is in store for next International Surfing Day. Thank you Ohana!

july 21st Surf with a Cop Day is one of our most treasured events. This day enables foster youth to interact with local law enforcement in a completely different way. Most of our youth grew up with their last memory with law enforcement being the time they were taken from their homes or separated from their siblings. This day enables both our youth and law enforcement to see beyond the uniform and get to know each other in more of a personal way. We can’t thank all of our volunteers enough for showing their support and donating their time for our youth. Our days at the beach together make it very evident that it is definitely not...”just a surf camp”. We thank you for helping to impact the lives of your local foster youth. Special thanks to the Coast Guards, Border Patrol, San Diego Sheriffs and Police Department for coming out to our event. Many of our youth who grew up saying the phrase, “I hate cops” were found to be playing on the beach and surfing with a smile with all of the “cops”. Thank you for making the day extra special. We truly can’t thank our sponsors Board & Brew, Reef, Nature’s Bakery, Shore Buddies, and Love on a Leash - San Diego North County Coastal Chapter for enough supporting Urban Surf 4 Kids. How incredible are those sandwiches though?! Thank you Board and Brew for always feeding our youth and volunteers!
Surf With a Cop was an amazing opportunity to get kids interacting with members of our Law Enforcement community here in San Diego. Our amazing speaker, Jason Philpot from San Diego County Sheriff Department’s SWAT Team, spoke about growing up in the inner city and getting bullied by guys in his neighborhood and seeing a lot of wrong happening there which helped him in deciding what he wanted to do in his life, help others and clean up the streets. Hearing him talk about just being a person had to connect with our youth that may just see him and officers and deputies like him as cops, the law. That’s what our event is all about. We had over a hundred volunteers on land and in the water and had an absolute blast. Our paddle out that honored members of the law enforcement community who passed in the last year was a nice gesture that allowed many of our volunteers to honor a friend or colleague in a unique way.
“This day enables both our youth and law enforcement to see beyond the uniform.”

untington Beach Our surf camp in Huntington Beach on July 29th was full of smiles, lots of Aloha, and pure stoke! We started off as strangers, but left as an OHANA! Special thanks to the US Open of Surfing and the World Surf League for inviting our youth to your event. The VIP tour given by ChloĂŠ Kojima made each one of them feel so special! We provided each youth their very own US4K Passport and spent lunch discussing values and our code of conduct.

November 4th
Our 2nd annual Surf with a Cop Day was EPIC! We participated in a Hawaiian tradition to honor our fallen local law enforcement with a reading of names lost in 2017, a prayer, a moment of silence and a paddle out! We took time together to discuss the importance of this event in helping bridge the gap between our local law enforcement and our children in need! This event was a community collaboration starting with our local enforcement from Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety and Volusia County Beach Safety team. Our sponsors all helped make this a day to remember. Special thanks to: Alphagraphics Daytona Beach, One Voice for Volusia, Coastal Family Church, Maui Nix Surf Shop, Daytona Board Store, Jay Todd, Gnarly Charley’s Grom Surf Series, Christian Surfers Daytona Beach, Ryan Ragan, Flagler Chiropractic (Adam), The Home Depot, Madden’s Ace Hardware FL, Lowe Orthodontics, All Aboard Properties, The Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Tijuana Flats, Pizza Hut, Hope Scouts, and Perego! Our Dreaming of Aloha Achievement Program is a chance for our youth to experience and be engulfed in the surf mecca of the world. Hawaii is a magical place that we get to share with a group of kids that earn an opportunity to participate in this unique program through community service, good behavior in their programs, maintaining good grades, and more. It’s not just a trip to Hawaii, it’s a chance of a lifetime to connect with youth in similar situations and similar life challenges, an opportunity to volunteer with Mauli Ola Foundationfor a day, a non-profit dedicated to serving youth with Cystic Fibrosis. It’s a chance to participate in the opening of the Eddie Aikau ceremonies, learn more about Hawaiian culture, and so many things that can’t be put into words.
