O
H YESSS, WE ARE BACK!
This is our SUMMER EDITION and I want to take the time to thank everyone who have partnered and supported us financially throughout the past years. Also, we want to thank those who have entrusting us with your life stories by submitting them for us to share with the world. We are truly grateful for our financial sponsors, prayer partners and supporters. Your prayers, partnership and financial support enable us to continually flood light in the dark places of the world. Together, we are giving HOPE to the hopeless; all while creating a platform to display hidden Gems; God’s amazing gifts that He has placed in the earth. Your support is literally allowing us to help their light shine even farther as we empower, inspire and encourage more lives globally. First of all I want to congratulate all the graduating students, from preschool, elementary middle school, high all the way up to our college graduates and to the proud parents, you did well, the best is yet to come! (I would love for you to send in some of your graduation pictures)Well, in this issue, we want to acknowledge and celebrate our Fathers, those who have taken their place of manhood being determined, that no matter if they had a role model or not, single or married, that they will be in their children’s lives and provide the best they have to offer, THEMSELVES. Also in this issue, I am honored to be trusted to share some testimonies by powerful women who authors, speakers, ministers,
singers, some have life changing organizations and are giving back to others who are walking where they have been. These powerful phenomenal women that I am sharing with you today and in our upcoming publications, have encouraged me and motivated me to dream bigger and to never give up. Many of these women I have only talked to on the phone or follow on Social Media. These are the women who inspire me and are the women who I sincerely believe are “Destined For Greatness”. For these women are using their past pain, unashamedly as fuel to empower others. They are speaking out, fearlessly telling their story and through their testimony; they are restoring hope to broken hearts as well as showing women that “ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE TO HIM THAT BELIEVE”. Yes, inside is loaded with so many encouraging and inspirational stories and as always is, it my prayer that YOU will be motivated and encouraged by them. No matter where you are in your faith, career, relationship or journey in life, know that God loves you and He has a great future planed for you! Always remember; You are Loved.. You are Beautiful…You are Powerful…But most of all, GOD HAS DESTINED YOU FOR GREATNESS!!!!We at weSPARKLE Magazine, would like to wish everyone a safe and fun summer. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, To my daddy, Walter Samuel Carter I love you, Forever and Ever and ALWAYS!
You are light for the world. A city cannot be hidden when it is located on a hill. Matthew 5:14 6 | SUMMER 2015

BE YOUR CHILD'S HERO "NO SUPER POWERS NEEDED"
A
hero, every child needs one, someone that they can look up to, mimic and brag about. Most of all, they need YOU to be their hero. The hero who can protect them, make them feel loved, important and safe from the uncertainty of this cruel world. Fathers, our sons and daughters need you to be daddy, to show them what true manhood looks like and what it is to truly be a super hero! Don’t let your sons down by forcing them to follow a counterfeit or have your daughters looking for you in the wrong faces and places. God forbid they grow up to become a super villain or perhaps hook up with YOUR Archenemy! Children will not think about the sacrifice you make to financially buy those special toys, but the memories that were created and the joys of togetherness you shared. No matter if you are short on time, not living with them in the home or whatever your financial situation looks like, all they truly want is YOU, THEIR FATHER, to be present, holding their hands when necessary, validating them, affirming YOUR acceptance. They crave your attention and NEED YOUR LOVE; to guide them in the right direction. And guess what? NO SUPER POWERS NEEDED! Just by being their dad is enough, revealing to them the greatest power of all, YOUR commitment to be present in their lives and giving them an opportunity, to become someone else’s HERO! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL THE SUPER HEROS AROUND THE WORLD!
Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

A Tribute to Fathers WILDFLOWER loved and cherished. At times we would request him to sing for us. He could also dance a gig as well. He taught me how to swing dance when I was young. I loved dancing with him. I will always cherish two special moments we shared, those memories I will hold forever in my heart. The first special moment occurred at my sister’s wedding reception, he took my hand and swing danced with me.
M
ost of the time, he would be in a polite mood, and entertain us with one of his favorite songs , “Wildflower” by Skylark, he would jokingly say that the Skylarks stole his lyrics out of his brain. We assumed he was joking, but his story never changed. He would sing that song with such grace and charisma. The song, Wildflower, became one of my favorite songs. I daydreamed that I was that flower that he sang about. “She’s a sweet and gentle flower, growing wild.” I wanted to be the delicate flower that was chosen from the garden to be
The second happened much later in life, this was a huge surprise. By this time he was using a cane to stand and walk as a result of the severity of his arthritis pain. Just when I thought his dancing days were over, he put down his cane and danced with me on my 50th Birthday. I truly felt like that beautiful Wildflower, with my tiara on my head, dressed in a beautiful yellow long Cinderella ballroom style gown. He danced with me one more time, maybe for the last time. These memories allowed me to take a glimpse of who he really is, this is the person I learned to protect. ~ Healing Angel

appy Father’s Day, to my Amazing Husband Grover Thomas, DADDY to our son’s. God knew what our son’s needed in their lives, actually, what WE needed. Only after ten months of meeting, we were married and you took them under your wing as your own. Never once did you call them Stepsons or Bianca’s children, they were always called “ours”. Thank you for being an AMAZING husband and DADDY to our sons. Love you ~Bianca SUMMER 2015

is name is Josh and he went on this infertility/ foster care/adoption ride with me! Did he probably think he would have kids of his own when he was growing up? Yes. Did he think he’d have to adopt? To that I would say, probably not, but he did and he is 100% a full time Father to them. He is the best dad to those kids; they’ve never had a male really love them. I love him for never complaining or saying anything about the adoption route we ended up needing to go. He works weird hours but still coaches’ sports and misses sleep to be with them. He has been along for the ride and now we have three beautiful children that are ours! We love him more than he’ll ever know! Jeni F ~ Matoaca, VA 10 | SUMMER 2015
To Kevin, Myles, and Dexter Robinson
I
am very happy for each of you and congratulate you both on being fathers. Kevin (Dad) Thank you for doing the best you could to raise me and guide me through this weird roller coaster called life. To my brothers, Myles and Dex, I know you two will do great with your Daughters. God Speed, Jordan T. Robinson
Happy Happy Father’s Day Daddy! My Dad is my Man of God I’m so thankful to have him in my life! I have not always been the most enjoyable to be around and have had my moments, but this Man of God has been with me through it all!! I remember one day when I was a young girl and my family had a blowout and my Dad walked out, I remember the fear that gripped me, thinking my Dad was going to leave I ran out of the house and up to his car and asked my Dad where he was going, he said he was just going to take a drive, but would be back. I went back inside the house and sure enough in the morning he was already back. It might seem strange to you, but that is one of my most treasured memories of my Dad, because when I came back to God, God help me to realize how privileged I was to have a Dad that would keep his word to me, how many girls can say that. I’m so thankful my father was there for me then and has never left me nor my family since. He would be the first person to say he did not do everything perfect, but in my book he is the Real MVP in our house beside our Mom and MOST IMPORTANTLY Jesus! Honored and privileged to have him as my earthly father! I don’t deserve him and never will! Just thankful God saw fit to bless me with him as a Dad. Happy, Happy Father’s Day Daddy ~Michelle S.

ften in life, we have many roles and are referred to by various titles. Larry answers to pastor, prison and police Chaplin, teacher, friend, brother and counselor to name a few. However, the most humble and honorable is to be called Dad. Yes, even with three adult sons, nothing is more cherished than seeing them serve the Lord. How we adore their amazing wives and there’s no words to express our love for our grandchildren. They still seek the wisdom and advice of their Dad. They still want his look of confidence and pride in their life’s accomplishments. Being Scott’s, Bryan’s and Robert’s Dad is a full reward. Happy Father’s Day Larry Briggs! ~ Jane B.
“Being a role model is the most powerful form of educating...too often fathers neglect it because they get so caught up in making a living they forget to make a life.” SUMMER 2015 11

Adesa Swan
desa Swan is a native Houstonian who has been acting since she was six years old. She has been permanent staple in the world of community theatre and script writing groups. While in high school, she was invited to attend a prestigious performing arts academy in New York City. This led her to grace the off Broadway stages of New York City and television and film in Los Angeles. She can be seen as Whitney Houston on SyFy’s Treasure Hunters and the feisty Laurita Matheson on NBC’s We The People. She is also a print model and can be seen in various trades such as Profiles of History. She is also an avid writer of non fiction motion picture scripts, faith inspired novels and biographies.“Writing has been my saving grace,” says Swan, At age five, she had so many vivid pictures in her mind but instead of talking about them, she put the pen to the paper to take the imagination level to any reader to a whole new level. “Imagination is a powerful tool that many must use when reading any story. You can have your own image of how the characters and places look which is priceless. Writing is an essential part of story telling.” She confidently states. In elementary school, she was
painstakingly shy and did not have a lot of friends so she began writing about different characters, towns and situations that did not always have a happy ending but it definitely told a story. “Everything is not always a fairy tale and I wanted to make magic by telling stories. That was my outlet to self expression and fulfillment. It was extremely therapeutic. I used to let my brother and sisters read my work and there jaws would drop because it would hit them right to the core. That’s when I began sharing my articles and stories with as many people as I could.” Says Swan confidently. Adesa believes that any reaction is better than no reaction because she feel that she has touched the reader in some way and that motivates her to keep writing which is her version of the ultimate form of story telling. She also believes that if any individual has a gift of storytelling they should not hesitate to share it. “When you share your gift, you are changing someone’s life. That in itself is a blessing because you never know what an individual was going through until you gave them a piece of your gift.” SUMMER 2015 13
FEATURED STORY
My Global Vision Women Ablaze International Ministry’s “SISTERHOOD EMPOWERMENT NETWORK” A NETWORK OF WOMEN SERVING WOMEN
“WE ARE CHANGING LIVES; BY BREATHING LIFE INTO ABORTED DREAMS AND RESTORING HOPE AND HEALING TO THEIR WOUNDED HEARTS”!
M
y Why...
Because of my past experience of secretly selling drugs out my mother’s home, suicide attempts, affiliation with gangs and being a victim of sexual, mental and physical abuse, I have encouraged many women to walk in forgiveness, loving themselves and believing that " God has destined them for greatness" just by sharing my story with them. I have had the privilege of helping women become liberated from their past abuse. After years ministering to many broken women and hearing about how they were not getting their emotional needs met in a regular church environment, I started feeling their hurts, burdens and pain. After seeking God for answers in 2011, He gave me the vision for Women Ablaze International Ministry and said,
“I SET YOU FREE TO SET OTHERS FREE” THROUGH WOMEN ABLAZE INTERNATIONAL MINISTRY, (SISTERHOOD EMPOWERMENT NETWORK) MY MISSION IS TO CHANGE WOMEN'S LIVES; BY BREATHING LIFE BACK INTO THEIR ABORTED DREAMS AND BY RESTORE HOPE AND HEALING TO THEIR WOUNDED HEARTS! Bianca

Ericka Ellis
Visionary and Founder of
Think. Love. Smart.
A beautiful woman inside and out, Ericka is definitely Destined for Greatness. 16 | SUMMER 2015
“Moving Foster Girls
Forward”
I
have not had the pleasure of meeting Ericka Ellis, personally YET, but I was introduced to her by my eldest son Terry about a year ago.
As a writer, She has blessed our past “weSPARKLE” readers with a personal devotion and we have decided to included another writing of hers in this issue as well, “The Heart Network”. From our very first phone conversation, our hearts connected and I knew she was one of God’s shining gems hidden; but MUST be known and seen all across the world. Believe me, I know good soil when I see it and if I have anything to do with making her light is seen even farther, I am determined to allow God to use me to make sure it does.
Ericka Ellis, a woman who is.......... DESTINED for GREATNESS! Marked by her own past as a foster child due to her mother’s former drug addiction, she understands the heart of those often dispirited girls. Through this connection, she is hopeful that she will help them discover their own gift is in forgiving, while combating the reckless thinking pattern many often adopt. Her mission is to “Move Foster Girls Forward” by preparing them to transition into the “real world,” equipped with the life skills they will need to be
productive citizens. She believes that when we reach out to our foster girls and help them succeed, we strengthen the very communities they originate from. Girls have an uncanny ability to share what they know with others so the circle of giving continues on and on. Think.Love.Smart’s mission is to use the organization to connect with foster girls across the nation to empower and educate them, and remind them that they are not alone in their journey into adulthood, no matter how bleak their circumstances. Many foster girls carry with them a sense of abandonment because of frequent transitions, as well as a lack of positive self-image. Think.Love.Smart’s mentoring programs help foster girls overcome the challenges of many transitions by providing consistent, caring support and modeling of important life skills. Think.Love.Smart mentors inspire and guide them to pursue a productive future and maximize their full potential. We aspire to motivate our foster youth who have been neglected and abused by promoting a healthier outlook on life and developing a stronger sense of self worth to become productive citizens in society. Think.Love.Smart will bridge the gap and assist in equipping our foster youth with the right tools to transition into quality productive, responsible, confident, and determined young adults, ready for positive participation in society.
Please visit her website to donate and learn more about Think.Love.Smart’s programs and about how you can partner with her to make a difference in some young girl’s life.

www.erickaellis.com he heart is powerful, not limited to its ability to sustain life or take it away; but its capacity to influence the very essence of who we are and the life we live. The way we live is often a translation of what we feel. This can be good or bad, depending on the condition of your heart. The heart is sensitive. That’s probably why the Bible warns us to, “Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” Proverbs 4:23.

WALKING IN MY Destiny
I
FULFILLING My Purpose!
want to Praise and Honor to Jesus Christ for loving me. I have had such a journey in my walk with the Lord. I was saved years ago and for a lot of years I was up and down, in and out, with my walk. I would do well for a few years and then the enemy would get control of me again. I had terrible and rough childhood of physical, mental, emotional, and sexual abuse. I didn’t know how to act. I didn’t know how to Love. I didn’t know how to live correctly. I was a total “wreck”. I think the one thing that kept me going was the prayers of my Mother and Grandmother. For years, I drank, drugged, partied and had all types of men in my life, men that used and abused me, physically and mentally. I thought I had to take it, because they “Loved” me, but this lifestyle landed me in BIG trouble with the Law. In 1995 I was arrested for promoting Prostitution. I was involved with a man that wanted me to put an “Escort Service” in my name as a business. I thought this was a legal business. I was blinded again to believe that the women that worked for such an establishment was doing “Legal” Massages. I believed they were going on “Dates” for money to just be companions. Boy was I wrong. I even went on “appointments” myself, and oh, how I soon found out the Life of a Prostitute. It was a good feeling to know that men wanted me and it felt good know I was getting “paid” for the 24 | SUMMER 2015
feeling. It was a lifestyle that involved “Power, Money, and Drugs”. You had to do the drug to do the job and that was the way the Devil was binding my life. Then a “Model” was arrested for Prostitution, but because the “Agency” was in my name as a business, I was arrested. Because of NO PREVIOUS record, I was given 5 years to be on probation on a State Level for the crime. So I am doing my Probation, doing what I was supposed to do as far as compliance with the State, working a legitimate job, but still not living for Jesus, YET. Two years later, in 1997, the FBI shows up on my job and arrested me this time on Federal charges that were associated from the State charge from 2 years previously. I was now charged with Money Laundering, Conspiracy and interstate trafficking across state lines to Promote Prostitution. Now I am facing charges that will have me in prison for a long time. The FBI considered the business that I had in my name, an “Organized” crime. I was considered a repeat offender, even though I wasn’t participating in the activities and an accomplice, because of association. Finally, God got my attention and began a real work in me. If I didn’t surrender to the Almighty God and what he had called me to do, I was going to Prison. This is when I said OK God, now what?
I knew that I had to repent of the sin’s that had landed me where I was now. I knew that what I had been doing was wrong, so I got down on my knees and cried out to God. “God please forgive me. I know I’ve strayed away from you, and been trying to do things the way I want to do them, But God, I know that you can change this situation, so I repent, I am sooo, so sorry for grieving you, Please forgive me and set me back on track” To God be the Glory, that is what he did. I knew that repentance would put me back on track. With repenting, acknowledging that I had done wrongs, and needed a Savior to pull me back into God’s fold. “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)
I was within hours of being transported to a Federal Facility. But, MY GOD intervened. I had prayed many nights asking God to intervene on my behalf, and HE did, God sent the Legal Angels to help me in my time of need. Through it all from 1997-1999, I told God I would serve Him no matter what happened and God knew my future, not me. In Oct. 1999, I started my Federal Probation along with State probation at the same time. After 9 months of the 30 month probation sentence, my Federal probation officer said, “Debbie, Let’s start working on getting you off probation”, You are a “model” probationer and I want the Judge to release you from Probation. So 11 months in, he sent a letter to request that I be released. Glory to God! My release was granted. I was sentenced with only 30 months of probation, yet, I Did Not go to Federal Prison, and then I was ‘Released’ from Federal Probation.
“I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:5) “God please forgive me. I know I’ve strayed away from you, and been trying to do things the way I Had I not gone through the “Those who are well have want to do them, But God, I know that you can consequences of my no need of a physician, but change this situation, so I repent, I am sooo, so sorry choices of sin, I wouldn’t be those who are sick. ope Askew, Virginia’s Sweetheart, seems to be everywhere! Whether acting in a play, managing her blog, ministering in song or visiting a nursing home, she’s doing it all. When it comes to this vessel of God, there are a few things you must know. She is one of the most compassionate, resilient, & unstoppable women in the business of gospel music. This wife and mother of three is Grace, Elegance and Class! With 3 full length projects under her belt, Hope Askew is no stranger to hard work. She has achieved Billboard’s, top 50 recognition and her music has been displayed on some of Gospel’s top charts. Her music was listed on the Most Added Gospel Song of the Week and Gospel Most New and Active Song of the Week charts; with Mary Mary, BeBe & CeCe Winans, The Sounds of Blackness, Jessica Reedy and more. The success of her music has catapulted Hope into being one of the Top 50 gospel artists in the country according to Billboard Charts at that time. She has shared the stage with Marvin Sapp, Andrae Crouch, Fred Hammond, Ty Tribbett, and Donald Lawrence to name a few. As if it was not hard enough to accomplish all of this and manage a family, Hope obtained a Master’s degree in Business from the University of Phoenix, AZ. She is also an Account Manager for the Daily Press Newspaper. In the midst of all the success, in 2012 Hope was dealt a devastating blow. She was awakened one morning in 2008 to numb feet with no understanding of why. Within the week, she was not able to feel anything from the chest down. She admits that this moment of uncertainty, was one of the scariest she had experienced. She could barely walk straight and could not feel anything with her hands. It took 4 years of pain and suffering to arrive at the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. She is currently in treatment, but declares that for the first time, she is confident and clear of her path. The diagnosis has totally changed her perception of life. 26 | SUMMER 2015
This path has produced the beginning of a true relationship with God. A relationship that is totally dependent on Him and His desire for her life. Of this experience, she says, “it taught me focus, how to totally depend on the Lord, and left me with a strength I never knew existed”. From day one, Hope explained that she knew this journey would not be over quickly. She says, “There are many people in the Kingdom of God who are physically ill and they just need to know that Jesus still loves them and has not forgotten them”. Hope goes on to say that, “It is never the intention for life’s pain to stop us in our tracks, instead we press toward the mark for the work we do in Christ is greater. Life moves on!” At the end of this summer, Hope will be releasing her new project, “Take This Love” in a venture with Kingdom Gate Music Group. The lead single, “Release Me” has done a masterful job at introducing Hope back into the industry and she is excited about where God will send her next! When it’s all said and done, there are no limits to where Hope Askew’s ministry will reach! She exclaims that after all the heartache and pain, “everything is falling into place!” With help from her PR and Marketing Strategist, Humility, Hope recently presented at the Radio Stellar Awards in Nashville, TN and had the honor of introducing with Brittani Tankard recording artist, Wes Morgan to a sea of national radio programmers. If there is one scripture that this sister lives by, it is; “This illness is not meant to end in death. It is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it”. John 11:4. The moral to her story, is to never let life get you down! Everything has its purpose and God still deserves your best! “He gets all the Glory!” teamhopeaskew@gmail.com

aised in Kenya , Nancy Gathecha has been currently based in Germany for the last 15 years. She is also a published author, transformational speaker and lifelong learner. She boldly believes, with God all things are possible. She proves her faith and lives out her dreams weekly by hosting an inspirational podcast. Because of her passion to serve people, she has helped others achieve their potential, follow their big God-given dreams and enjoy the balanced success and abundant life that Jesus came to give us. Ms. Gathecha, love helping women and organizations achieve their personal and professional goals faster with her coaching and consulting services as well as counsel women spiritually by sharing her faith. I am so honored to have her take the time to share with us a little about her life and work. Nancy, what is the inspiration for the work you do? I had a Christian bookshop in Bonn Germany while attending Bible School. Little did I realize I was in ministry already and not just own a bookshop. Many people would come by just to talk and it was during that time I realized many of them have been told, what they could or can’t do so, they’ve forgotten their God-given dreams along with burying their talents, and gifts. I consider it a privilege and my mission to help someone see the seeds of greatness within them beneath all the junk life can pile up on them. Did you receive any formal training in your field? Yes, I am a certified life coach and faith-based counselor and a Rhema Bible School graduate. What do you enjoy most about the work you do and why? I love seeing the transformation that occurs when I work with people and they discover what was already inside them. The seeds of greatness, potential and 28 | SUMMER 2015
Tell us about any new projects that you have coming up or recently completed. My 2nd updated print of my book “7 Steps To Success - How To set and Achieve Your Goals” and I recently started the “Live By Design Radio”, A faith-based weekly podcast that entertains, educates, empowers and encourages listeners to follow their dreams and take their lives to the next level. We can live by design instead of existing by default. Goals are dreams with deadlines and one way we can design the lives we desire and dream of is, by setting and achieving goals. What are the biggest risk you ever took professionally and the biggest obstacle you have overcome pursuing your vision? My biggest risk was, going back and investing in my home country Kenya. I opened a boutique while partly living in Germany. You can’t do business on remote. That didn't go too well and I lost a lot of money, but gained valuable insights from the lessons of opening my second shop in my 2nd passion which is fashion. The biggest obstacle would be establishing a business in a foreign Country, Germany because of the language and culture barrier. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I see myself living a long awaited dream, in my home country, Kenya. Are there any people in your field you would like to meet or work with and have not yet had the opportunity? Yes, Les Brown, Keith Moore, Jack Canfield and Ali Brown. I guess almost everyone wants to meet Oprah :-) What do you do for fun, relaxation and entertainment? Go shoe-shopping and bonding with friends, read, and Bing-watch Netflix with ice cream. I also enjoy long walks along the Rhine River in Germany. What advice do you give to those who are afraid or thinking about pursuing their dreams? Just Do It.
Feel the fear and do it anyway!

i, everyone at weSPARKLE, thank you for the amazing opportunity to share with you my testimony! Remember What God has done for me HE WILL DO FOR YOU AND GREATER! For a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which has wings shall tell the matter. Ecc.10:20. When I was around eleven or twelve years old and even before that I came across porn no one knew but me (and God, of course) I became addicted. I’m SOOO thankful to God that one day I decided to read my one of the bibles we had around the house. Till this day it remains one of the BEST choices I have every made! (Glory to God!) I started reading in the psalms they were SO beautiful. I read my bible every day for three days at the end of the third night I gave my life to the Lord Jesus Christ!. I’m not gonna say I was delivered off of porn in one night but NOW thanks be unto God which always
causeth us to triumph in Christ 2 Cor.2:14 he give me the victory :) During that time I was also dealing with lesbian thoughts but today I’m so glad God made me a woman I rejoice in Gods choice for me! Not that I can’t be tempted in those areas but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make a way to escape that you may be able to bear up under it. 1Cor.10:13. Isn’t Jesus wonderful, today I am applying for Rhema bible training college in broken arrow, Oklahoma and will attend in the fall. Thanks SOOO much for this amazing opportunity to tell how God is up to His goodness as always. A special shout out to all my family, my father for always being a man of God and my mother for showing me His love! Also, a shout out to my brothers for supporting me and for still being my friends (even after knowing me for 19 years!) Glory to God! All my family at grace community church and at harvest church (thank God for these GREAT churches!) In Exodus 15 it talks about how the children of Israeli came to the bitter waters at Marah. In Exodus 15:25 So Moses cried out to God. God pointed him to a stick of wood. Moses threw it into the water and the water became sweet. God CAN, WILL AND DELIGHTS (Micah 6:18)IN TAKING the worst situation and turn it for his Glory and for our Good. Michele Spencer

he was only 18, a freshmen in college, her entire life in front of her; and with one, life-altering choice, it changed. The campus views and the liberating spirit she had just about grown accustomed to were replaced by the dull images of gray cement floors, painted yellow lines, and the removal of her freedom. Her poor choice, one that she fully accepts as her responsibility, landed her in the federal pen for four-and-a-half years. Since that time, she had been on-fire to inspire, encourage, and uplift women; to teach them how to learn from their experience, tap into their gifts, and greatness, and build a business that makes a difference to them and to others. Even though I have not had the pleasure of physically meeting her “YET”, just by following her Facebook page, her tips and postings has impacted my life in so many ways. Periodically, when I get the chance to briefly glance across her time line, those small peeks is enough for her energy to, Motivate and Inspire ME; to DREAM BIGGER and not to allow other’s “seemingly” success discourage me from fulfilling my purpose. Through her page, she has also helped me understand the importance of being consistent with my brand, the power of being authentic, valuing my time and gifts, but most importantly, even when others don’t believe in me, BELIEVE IN ME! As an energetic, dynamic, straight forward and no nonsense speaker, she continues to motivate and inspire women through her BOOKS, ACTIVATE CONFERENCES and VISION BOARD WORKSHOPS around the world. WHO WAS REALLY IN CONTROL? BY JASMINE CLARK
A
fter only of 4 ½ years of marriage today, it was over, actually it was on June 11, 2014 when my marriage fell completely apart and ended. On July 25, 2014, I filed for my divorce and on July 31, I decided to take a much needed miniature vacation from work. Refreshed, I returned to work on Monday, August 4, 2014 to hear the words that I was suspended until further notice for something that I had absolutely nothing to do with. Statements were written, cell phone records were provided, both agents and supervisors all doing everything in their power to clear my name and to ensure that I return to work. August 7, 2014, I received a phone call from my boss informing me that, I was being terminated from employment. She said that it pained her to have to fire me because she knew within her heart that I did not do what I was being accused of. Yet that day, I was let go, immediately my benefits ended and I was ineligible to receive a payout for the time I had accrued over the years of my employment. Not even a week later, I came home to a notice on my door, informing me that my rent would be going up $100.00. So let me get this straight, my marriage was over, I was wrongfully terminated from my job, no income, my livelihood was gone and NOW, I am in jeopardy of not having a roof over my head? Why was I losing everything? I had to stop and realize that I was looking at it all wrong. Nothing that truly belongs to me can be taken from me! If it is, then it wasn't mine to begin with. I had to remember WHO
WAS REALLY IN CONTROL, I wasn't losing a thing! One thing God does tremendously well is turn it all around for your good! Yes, I'm divorced but it turned for my good. You see, I’m a good woman and I deserve a good man, a man that will love me unconditionally one that will love me as Christ loved the church! I deserve a man that is so committed to God, that his commitment to me will not waiver. Baby, I deserve the world, not someone who doesn't know whether or not he even wants to give me the surface! Yes, I was fired from my job and I discovered, that too was for my good, because had I still been employed, my business would be nonexistent and I would not be walking in my purpose! Why did I share my story with you? Because I want you to also, find comfort in knowing that God is in control of your life, when things began to shift around. I’m a living witness that it’s only for your elevation! Jasmine Clark is Certified Professional Life Coach, Speaker and Entrepreneur. I Encountered JESUS, on a Walk to EMMAUS!
hat, no phones, watches or television? I think it was around 1999, I went on walk #50, I had the most life changing Experience ever, I attended a women’s retreat called, Emmaus. For three days, I was a roommate with a total stranger, received selfless love from women who I did not know, worshiped God and I was given the amazing opportunity to actually see,
HURTING WORLD and hopefully, be used as a vessel to provoke others who are called by HIS name, to become CIA, CHRIST IN ACTION! GOD LOVES US, AND HE IS JUST WAITING FOR US TO BE STILL ENOUGH TO ENCOUNTER HIM! NEVER HEARD OF EMMAUS? Overview of The Emmaus Story
“CHRIST IN ACTION”. This was very overwhelming to say the least, to feel God’s tangible love poured out towards me through complete strangers. At that time of my life, I needed peace and that was the group, they preassigned me to, or should I say God preordained, because no one knew what I had just came through or needed but Him! I had been saved and going to church for 13yrs and had never seen or experienced this kind of love, even among those I fellowshipped with weekly on Sundays. Out of 30 plus women, I was the only person of color, but it didn’t matter, I was in the presence of LOVE. On the third night, as I lay unclothed on the operating table, entered “The Great Physician”, it was there my eyes where opened and I saw HIM, “I ENCOUNTERED GOD” and my heart was forever marked by HIS Love. Well, all I can say is, that feeling and experience has remained with me until this day, in fact, this is what motivated me to do what I do, which is, TO BE A VESSEL THAT GOD CAN USE TO REVEAL HIS LOVE TO A 32 | SUMMER 2015
Luke 24:13-35 (NRSV)
Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all the things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took
place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, the came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us, while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Here is a brief overview. The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God’s grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church. The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion. The “Emmaus community,” made up of those who have attended an Emmaus weekend, support the 72-hour experience with a prayer vigil, by preparing and serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving. any years had passed since my experience with Emmaus; when my Sponsor/Sister in Christ/ Best friend, once again asked me to team with her at Kairos. She had mentioned about teaming years earlier, but my children were younger and I knew my husband would not be too happy with me leaving them. Well, it’s now thirteen years later, what would be my excuse? Well before she actually got around to asking me, again, she was talking about how frustrating she was with us, (People of Color) “Every time we so call Christians are asked to do something outside of our comfort zone, we make excuses and the sad part about it is, the prison is filled with us” Ok, how did she know I was about to share my excuse about why I couldn’t serve this time? Lord knows my plate is already full. I have my magazine to run and my own women’s ministry, but I had already to quickly agreed how ashamed we should be! (ouch) So, when she asked me to team with her, I without hesitation said, sure. Oh Lord what did I say? What will my husband say? (He was not too happy) :( Well to make a long story short, I went determined to be a blessing to the prisoners, but boy was I in for a BIG surprise. I was blessed

even greater than I could ever imaged; as I stood serving alongside some of my Emmaus sisters praying for each other and for our incarcerated sisters; while they each received their breakthrough. Throughout the week we were reminded “why we were there”, to be instruments of God, allowing Jesus to be seen and heard. We were God’s handmaidens, servants of the Most High God called to be selfless instruments of His love; so we stuck to our Kairos Motto and “Listened listened, loved loved” as well as drank coffee and ate cookies. Oh! Did I say lots and lots of cookies, yes, all day for three days. We sat at our assigned tables listening to our teammates share their stories and I even got the privilege to share mine, it was then I realized the only difference between them and I was, they got caught and I didn’t! It was only by the mercy of God that I was not dead or behind those bars. Thank You Jesus!!! We listened to the inmates talk about how much they miss their children, their regrets and their pain. Many of them talked through streams of tears while asking why, why would we sacrifice time spent with our families to come to prison to spend time with them, a stranger? During that weekend, we laughed together, we prayed together, we became family and our lives were
forever changed. We came together from different churches and cities, some as far as 5-6 hours away. We did not talk about our personal beliefs or denomination it didn’t matter, we loved Jesus. Nor did we talked about the inmates sins, because that didn’t matter either, we were there for one purpose only, to be the reflection of Jesus, and to listen listen, love love. Yes these women came to eat some homemade cookies, but they received a greater treat. They received unconditional Love, Forgiveness, Freedom, a community of support and a new family in Christ. Indeed Jesus turned their lives upside down and mines too! ~ Bianca Here are some of the questions and the answers given by the women who completed Kairos walk #38 Testimonies as a group #1 – In what spiritual state did you arrive at Kairos? brokenhearted, suicidal, nothing to live for, and thought that peace could only be found through death. My eyes and heart were opened with purpose to believe God adopted me even when I felt before he didn’t. I felt so much love – Kairos saved my life. 4. I feel so peaceful. All I believed in before was the hurt in my life. I never experienced such peace - so happy, calm. 5. Before I came, I was very angry, but I let go and let God. Ain’t no party like a Holy Ghost party! 6. I found something wonderful I
didn’t realize I was missing unexpected love and support from people who are not judging me, joy, peace, love, going back to the hall with such a high, I have goose bumps from joy, peace, love all around me. 7. I was lucky to be on Kairos because I was on cell restriction, but thank God, I am going through things and have figured out what I now need to do. I did a lot of soul-searching this weekend. 8. Time allowed me to open my heart and find Jesus; I have tried everything but God, and it’s God’s time now. 9. Before when facing troubles, I would turn to God to find a way
but not until this weekend had I felt His presence and love. 10. I love Jesus with all my heart, soul, and mind - hard things were in my past but God sent me here for a reason. 11. I made a big transformation. I was practicing witchcraft since 1995, but I have now turned to the Lord. The devil is real and I am a sinner. I need prayer for my son who is following dark spirits. My husband is a warlock and my son is following in his footsteps. I am thankful for God’s love, and I am sorry for the friends I have hurt. I can’t wait to call my mom and tell her that her daughter is out of witchcraft. I was signed up for Kairos for two years, and God says I am ready now and I have rededicated my life to God. 12. I came back home where I belong, no longer victim but victorious. A seed is planted in me for a purpose. God loves me unconditionally, and I submit and surrender to God. God used His sheep to be with us and motivate us. I have the mind to do right – I can do all things through Christ Jesus. 13. One way to describe me now - like Tony the Tiger, GRRRRREAT! 14. I came thinking God could not speak to me anymore, and I had hardened my heart. This weekend I forgave and asked for forgiveness, gave it all away. I had not spoken to my daughter in a year and had not seen my newborn grandson who is now home from the hospital,
but God gave me Kairos and when I went back to the hall, I called her and she spoke to me. 15. I was angry, frustrated, and unforgiving. I received the message to let it go, and I forgave others and praise God. 16. Since I was 8 years old, I was teased about my hair, but now I know I am fearfully and wonderfully made; no weapon formed against me shall prosper. I will continue to walk in grace. 17. I was in the emergency room this week with an allergic reaction that I believe was the enemy trying to keep me from going to Kairos; I received forgiveness.

The Kairos program incorporates curriculum designed to build and encourage pro-social character and behavior. Society spends over $60 billion/yr. to keep more than 2.1 million inmates incarcerated men and women with nearly 650,000 people released annually, whereas the Kairos program is offered at no cost to State and Federal Institutions. It’s been said that it cost the government $1 million to keep “me” locked up and a $100 program from Kairos set “me” free.

A MESSAGE from Co Editor, Terry Briggs
Hello Friends,
I
am so glad to connect with you again in this issue of weSHINE. I’m even more excited that this issue is coming out on Father’s Day. Father’s Rock! So to all the fathers out there...Happy Father’s Day! I can honestly say I never knew my biological father as young teenager; however my step father, Grover, stepped in my life around the age of 13 and has been an amazing father. He’s shown me and has exemplified how to provide for your family, take responsibility for your actions (good or bad), and why it’s not good to put off tomorrow what we can do today (ole man procrastination). Since my teenage years, I’ve had amazing male mentors, father figures, and role models who have impacted me in some way. Now being a father myself, those lessons and time spent helping to develop my potential as young man has truly benefited my parenting with my two boys, Terry and Joseph.
time, the women are looking at the men like, “Boo...YOU WERE NEVER REALLY IN.” Many men get so caught up in the providing aspect of parenting; they totally overlook the developmental side and miss out on valuable internal lessons on character, a healthy positive self-image, respect, Manners, etc. Many father’s forget that giving a simple warm embrace (hugs...remember those?) to both their sons and daughters go a long way. Needless to say giving them an “I love you” or “I’m very proud of you” goes just as far if not further; yes, even further than the gifts you give them. I know men who because their father never hugged them as a child, now struggle with hugging their children or in reverse some struggle with being hugged by their children. Not to mention, they may miss out on how to show affection to the women in their lives. Father’s, I implore you, if that’s you, make the necessary adjustments and begin to create a balance and memorable moments in your Fathership. Men, as fathers, we can always strive to be just a little bit better.
Friends, It’s my desire, that as you read this issue of weSHINE, you’ll discover stories of I’ve come to grasp and believe that being a father goes beyond providing, playing hope, inspiration, success, achievement, and for those who need it, find the recharge you with , and involving our children in sports were searching for; So, once again...Happy and other activities. Father’s Day to all the fathers out there. Being a father encompasses being involved in their development emotionally, spiritually, mentally, academically, financially, etc. So many aspects of parenting gets passed over to the mother like a fun game of “Tag you’re now it”, when most of the 38 | SUMMER 2015
FATHERS REALLY DO ROCK! Fight For Your Dreams, Terry
I
n public, my dad was one of the great pastors of his generation. He served most notably for 20 fruitful years at Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena, where John and Noel Piper worshiped during their Fuller Seminary days. Dad and John were dear friends. In private, my dad was the same man. There was only one Ray Ortlund, Sr.—an authentic Christian man. The distance between what I saw in the New Testament and what I saw in my dad was slight. He was the most Christ like man I’ve ever known: the kind of man, the kind of father, I long to be. In no particular order, here are 10 lessons on fatherhood I learned from watching him, each lesson living on in my life from memories of his care for me. 1. He was never too busy. My dad was a busy pastor, but he was never too busy for me. When he felt he hadn’t had enough time with me, he’d say, “Hey Bud, want to skip school tomorrow and go down to the beach?” It didn’t take me long to agree to that! So off we went. We surfed and talked and had fun together. The next day he’d write a note to the school to explain my absence, and when I took it to the principal’s office they always marked my absence “Unexcused.” I guess the reason didn’t count with them—a father wanting to catch up with his son. But dad didn’t care. I mattered to him. And I knew it. 2. He was a Bible man. My dad was wholeheartedly devoted to Jesus. On my 17th birthday, he and
Author: Ray Ortlund my mom gave me a new Bible. In the front he wrote the following: Bud, Nothing could be greater than to have a son—a son who loves the Lord and walks with Him. Your mother and I have found this Book our dearest treasure. We give it to you and doing so can give nothing greater. Be a student of the Bible and your life will be full of blessing. We love you. Dad 9/7/66 Philippians 1:6 When I read that, I knew my dad meant every word of it. He was a Bible man, and the blessing he wrote about was obvious in his own life. 3. He praised God. As a kid growing up, I didn’t need an alarm clock most mornings. I woke up to the sound of my dad singing in the shower down the hallway. Every morning he sang heartily and cheerfully this hymn: When morning gilds the skies, My heart awaking cries, May Jesus Christ be praised, Alike at work or prayer, To Jesus I repair, May Jesus Christ be praised Many men are hard to read. I have no idea what they stand for. But I never wondered about my dad— what he cared most about, what he was living for. Never once. At all. Not even a little. He did not take a keep-a-low-profile approach to life. Jesus was too wonderful to him. He praised the Lord throughout his life, in public, in private, in a clear and winsome way that could not be ignored. 4. He cheered me on. My dad set me free to pursue God’s call on my life. He guided me in appropriate ways, of course, but he did
not fearfully cling to me or hope I would always live nearby. Just the opposite. He urged me to follow Christ anywhere. Now and then he’d make this speech: “Listen, son. Half-hearted Christians are the most miserable people of all. They know enough about God to feel guilty, but they haven’t gone far enough with Christ to be happy. Be all-out for him! I don’t care if you’re a ditch-digger, as long as you love the Lord with all your heart.” He was not impressed with worldly success and going to the right schools and all that pretense and bluff. He wanted something better for me, something I had to find on my own. But I never doubted how urgently he desired for me a clear call from God on my life. And I did receive it, partly because my dad didn’t intrude himself into it but cheered me on as I followed the Lord myself. 5. He had a real walk with God. I remember going downstairs early one morning and walking in on my dad in the living room. There he was, on his knees, his face buried in his hands, absorbed in silent prayer. He didn’t know anyone else was up. It wasn’t for show. It was real. My dad had a real walk with God. It never occurred to me to wonder if Jesus was the Lord of his heart and of our home. Dad loved the gospel. He served the church. He witnessed to our neighbors. He even tithed when he couldn’t afford it. He set the tone of our home, and our home was a place of joy, honesty and comfort. Jesus was there. SUMMER 2015 39

7. He loved us when it wasn’t easy. My mom told me once that dad had a practice as he came home at the end of each day. He worked hard throughout the day and he came home tired. So as he walked up the back steps, before he reached out to open the back door, he would lift a simple prayer to God, “Lord, I need some extra energy right now.” And God answered that prayer. I never saw my dad walk in with no positive emotion to give. Instead, he’d walk over to my mom, kiss her with a huge kiss, and then turn to me and say, “Come on, Skip, let’s wrestle!” And we’d go out to the front room and wrestle on the floor and tickle and laugh and have a blast. The moment-by-moment reality of God in my dad’s heart gave him energy to love his family when it wasn’t easy. 8. He helped me love the church. The fact that dad was a pastor made me “the preacher’s kid,” obviously. Every now and then, well-meaning church people said foolish things to me, as if I had to be perfect or superior or something they expected. So dad said to me once, “Son, when people say things like that, they don’t mean 40 | SUMMER 2015
any harm. But it isn’t fair. They don’t realize that. I want you to know, you can ignore it.” Dad had high standards for Christian living. But he was wise enough to know that a 10-year-old follows Christ in a way different from a 40-year-old. He was realistic and compassionate. He made allowances for me to be a Christian kid. And he is the primary earthly reason why I love the church today. He wisely showed me how church life does not need to be oppressive. 9. He lived his faith simply and practically. Dad showed me how to walk with the Lord in practical ways. For example, here is a statement he settled on as his own daily path: My Morning Statement of Faith I believe that today: God is sovereignly directing my life as I yield myself to him, and that he loves me unconditionally, and I love him and put him first in my life. Christ is my Lord and Master, and I seek to abide in him and do his will immediately and exactly. The Holy Spirit is my friend, teacher and guide, who will open and close doors today and fill me with himself to make me an effective servant. I now commit my wife and family to the Lord, who loves them as well as others I love. They too are in his sovereign care. I step out in bold faith and relax in the Lord, and enjoy this day given to me by him. I trust him to use me today. It’s simple, but valid. Dad exemplified how to make daily Christianity accessible and practical. 10. He told me ministry isn’t everything. Being a “preacher’s kid” was sometimes difficult, as I
mentioned. But more than offsetting this difficulty was my dad’s love for me and my admiration for him. I adored him. I still do. Even as I write this, I choke up. I miss him so. Being the son of a godly pastor was a sacred privilege given to me as a gift from God himself. My respect for my dad and his personal attractiveness—the real Christianity I saw in him, the beauty with which he served as a pastor even when he suffered—the personal impact of it all was that I grew to revere the pastoral ministry. And today I am rejoicing to be a pastor myself. Which brings me to my final scenario. Early on Sunday, July 22, 2007, my dad woke up in his hospital room in Newport Beach. He knew it was finally his day of release from this life. He had the nurse call the family in. My wife, Jani, and I were far away in Ireland for ministry that day. We didn’t know what was happening back home. But the family gathered at dad’s bedside. They read Scripture. They sang hymns. Dad spoke a word of patriarchal blessing and admonition to each one, a message suited to encourage and guide. He pronounced over them all the blessing of Aaron: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24–26). And then, quietly, he fell asleep. Later I asked my sister about dad’s message to me. It was this: “Tell Bud ministry isn’t everything. Jesus is.” My dad’s dying words summed up his parenting and his whole life. Ray Ortlund Ortlund.net

6. He taught me theology in the backyard. One day when I was 11 or 12, while we were doing yard work outside—I can’t remember the context—my dad stopped, looked me in the eyes, and said, “You know, Bud, before time began, God chose you.” I was floored. Almighty God thought of tiny me? Way back then? I felt so loved by God. Years later, when I became aware of the doctrine of election as such, I had no problem with it. I loved it. My dad had begun my theological education in my boyhood in the course of everyday conversation.

started my journey weighing around 400lbs. I was a very happy, large young man dealing with internal health issues. I used to be and sometimes I still am, the sweets king. I ate everything sweet in sight and the fact that my dad owned a store and I had free access to snacks didn’t help. After losing several family members and a really close friend to health issues, I decided to change my lifestyle and body especially, when the doctor told me I was in danger of having a stroke. It was then I decided not to be a statistic but an inspiration to myself and others. With no medical intervention, I committed to changing my eating habits and my lifestyle by starting with food portion control, eating in moderation which included proper diet and exercise. 42 | SUMMER 2015
Since April of 2012, with the help of family and friends and using tools such as P90X, My local gym classes, apps like myfitnesspal and weightloss manager, I have had major success. You don’t have to do anything drastic, just learn how to eat the correct portions and in moderation. I was always a happy person but I can honestly say I'm happier being healthy. Deciding to be healthy and live the life I want to live has been exhilarating!! My journey is far from complete but my road to Health success is making me want to keep pushing myself. I have to Faith it forward. I am very blessed and thank God for what he's done so far and continuing to do with and through me. Henry McCrea

n the year of December 2012, while I was home, thinking and talking with the Lord. I asked him; Lord, what other business would you have me to do for you? (Seeing that, we had started raising some chickens on the farm at home prior to this). While I was thinking and looking around, the Lord showed me instantaneously that I had the music and he had given it to me for his glory. So in the nick of time he said, DO AN ALBUM. Interestingly, as this occurred, It was in this same period that I was still in my third (3rd) year at school (The Jamaica Theological Seminary) studying for my Bachelors degree in Guidance & Counseling. Without any options or ideas of where this money was going to come from to finance this album, I can proudly say, God did good. I completed the album just before I completed my degree in school; my graduation was on the 28 of June 2014 at the Jamaica Theological Seminary in Kingston Jamaica. Also to add, the theme that comes
with the album is to minister to children right across the world. Because God showed me that if we want to change the world and rid it of crime, violence, immorality among others we then have to first reach the minds of our children with GODLY GOOD MUSIC. Plus, this was one of the ultimate reason why the Lord wanted GODLY GOOD to come about to reach out to persons and make disciples for his Kingdom. Currently, I am journeying and promoting Godly Good in some of our primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions in Jamaica and various churches. In some of these promotions that I have done so far I used the opportunity to implore parents, guardians, and people in general to get a copy of Godly Good for their children. For I am of the view, that music is a powerful instrument, with a powerful channel, which is found in every language, culture and race. It seeks to influence human behavior both positively and negatively. In addition, society embraces and lauds good music, (like
those of Bob Marley, Michael Jackson etc) while at the same time, embraces raunchy and disparage music. Sadly, not much attention and appreciation is given to Godly Good Music, music that is God inspired and Christ orientated. Moreover, Godly good is not just music, but it’s a cultural awareness and embellishment of Jamaican music, and appreciation of the many heart forms and cultural gifts to always bless and glorify the Lord. Godly Good will not just be “today’s music” but it is for a lifetime. It will always bring about change in our children to have them acquire good behavior, requisite skills, and knowledge to help them see God’s Music (Godly Good Music) as the preferred and acceptable choice of music to always listen to. Thank you; Keep doing God for He’s always doing good for us. ~ Shelmoy “Shello” Samuels www.godlygoodmusic.com SUMMER 2015 43

am a chosen vessel and a kingdom ambassador of Christ. Gospel music has been my joy ever since I can remember. The house of the Lord has always been my place of dwelling. I must confess it has not always been easy. If you are in this gospel industry, know that the Devil will fight hard against you, for he does not like people who are working for Gods Kingdom. He does this to discourage us. (Like black men don’t have enough challenges already) It has been very tough for me since I have been working to spread the Gospel, but God has sustained me through it all. 44 | SUMMER 2015
I’ve been mocked by people and asked, “Why don’t you switch to R&B or Pop?” I’ve slept in the church for a whole year when I was a praise and worship leader, but I had to make sure that church members didn’t find out or know that I was sleeping there. I promised myself that I would never give up. During that time, I was working odd jobs to sustain myself and put myself through school. It took me a long while before I was able to buy a car. I walked to many of my church gigs.
There was one particular day when I received a phone call from a pastor who invited me for a program, I said to him Pastor, he said “yes” I said to him pastor, I have not enough money to bring me down to your church and he said to me “don’t worry, you can borrow money to make it here I will reimburse you the money”. When the program was over and it was time for me to get paid, brethren, All I got from the Pastor was a “God Bless You, we will call you during the week” I had to borrowed money from a stranger at the church, He then asked me, if I was the one who just finished leading the praise and worship? I said yes, then he just shook his head and left. When I got home I couldn't pay the person back whom I borrowed money from. He asked me if I was truly serving God. I could only receive nothing but embarrassment, but, I never stop trusting God. I also still believe that there are a lot of real men of God, but there are many men who are fake, men who pretend to be of God. Everything I went through I saw it as a training ground for my purpose which God had predestined for me.
through Christ and manliness... No matter how hard it might get or how long it takes you to climb, put all your trust in God and one day you will finally climb to the top, for God will direct your path. God brought me out from being a nobody, to being somebody, from non-entity to an entity, from grass to grace, from poverty to prosperity and from foolishness to a follower of Christ. Today, I am like a city set upon a hill that can never be hidden...not because I deserve it but because He is good and his mercies endureth forever. I never regretted serving God. Don't give up because our God is better than the best, greater than the greatest and richer than the richest and forever he will be God. He will never bend down for anyone and He never changes. We have to be Christ like and work according to his will. My testimony is that God has sustained me, He did it for me by helping me in launching out a single album debut titled, "Let me see your face” and now all the people that mocked me by the grace of God, I have been able to be a helper to them. To all my brothers, it is not easy, we have much to deal with, whether it’s Racism, Finances, Family issues, whatever it may be, and with God all things are possible! Nevertheless, I know He that calls me and He has promised me that He will always be there for me, even though it might tarry.
Yes, with God, all things are possible; and that’s MY TESTIMONY!
Life is a learning curve whereby it creates synergy after ones experience... In the beginning my life was not all good stories, but it has a happy ending. I use to beg so I could get food to eat, beg for clothes and shoes to wear but, I never gave up. No matter what you go through believe it or not it will expire one day. If you don't go through stuff as a Christian, how can you appreciate Christ and all that he endured for us at Calvary?
If only you would believe in God, He will never let you down and His promises will surely come to pass...
The bible says with God all things are possible, I can attest that it’s very true. With the human mentality it’s like many years, but with God it’s only a second. I encourage you to truly trust in God with everything, I mean wholeheartedly, not partially.
Today I'm a living testimony. Years back, I use to borrow money to move from one place to another, but today I can fly in a plane to anywhere in the world, and that's why my album is titled “My Testimony”.. No matter what you're going through hold on don't give up!
There’s No Glory without a story. Within my core being no matter what my mind says, I know that the objective of my life is for the advancement of Gods kingdom among men, for promotion of godly habits, reverence, obedience, discipline and self-respect
Only by the grace of God here I am still here, standing as a Pastor and founder of "The Street Of Gold Church" starting very soon, according to the will of God in Atlanta GA. ~ Moses Abiodun SUMMER 2015 45

xcuse me for how I talk about my Heavenly Father but it is what it is! A beautiful woman of God asked me to write about my experiences with God. I really don't know where to begin & I really don't wanna bore you. God has really changed my life! If you know your bible you know about Legion, Peter, & Jacob. I can identify with all three. Like Jacob,(Genesis 27, Genesis 30) I was a trifling, sneaky, hustler always looking for a way to scheme & rob and or get over on whoever including my own family! But then I had an encounter with God and my walk ain't been the same since YA DIG! Like Legion, (Mark 5:1-20, Luke 8:26-39) I was a tormented, angry, and violent individual, infested with demons and issues. Lol! I was so angry & violent that chains got put on me too! But then I met this dude named Jesus while I was in chains & now people don't believe I was who I was when I say I was how I was YA DIG! And like Peter, (John 18:10-11) even after I

walked and talked with Jesus, I got violent and tried to dismember someone. I even turned my back on Him out of disbelief, guilt, and shame! But this dude named Jesus kept on sending people to tell me to come on back home YA DIG! Basically, regardless of your issues, what you've done, how bad you know you were, or how bad you think you've messed up, God can change you! God can heal you of whatever issues or bad habits you struggle with no matter how long you've had them or what they are (Luke 8:43- 48). And regardless of how violent you were or are, God can change you! But it can only happen through Jesus YA DIG! (John 14:6) He can even heal & restore (Luke 22:51) the hurt, the pain, the loss, and the damage you've caused someone or people!!! Jesus is that dude! Holler at Him! Even if He doesn't pick up on the first ring, He always call back and answer voicemails YA DIG!! Sex ADDICTION 101 P2 In the last issue we briefly touched on the subject, but in THIS article we will take a more in depth look at sexual addiction as it relates to women, the impact as partner/spouse as well as when the woman is the one with the struggle.
S
Sexual Addiction Defined….
exual addiction is about so much more than a person having sex. It knows no boundaries. Sexual addiction is nondiscriminatory. It cares not about race, socioeconomic background, denomination or religious affiliation or gender. Sexual addiction impacts people of all ages. Through the use of media, we have witnessed the stories of prominent leaders politicians, clergy, as well as celebrities, who have been entangled by this addiction. Despite what the media portrays regarding sexual addiction and the minimalistic way in which it attempts to downplay the effects, sexual addiction impacts everyone connected to the one with the struggle. It destroys families, ends relationships, it can even split churches. The truth of the matter is that we don’t have to look to the media to identify someone who is possibly struggling with sexual addiction. It may be that they have not confided in us that they are dealing with it. It could even be that we are in denial, as are they, regarding their behaviors. That someone may even be us. I’ve heard it said time and time again by countless women, “Oh, 48 | SUMMER 2015
I know my husband or boyfriend watches a little bit of porn. All men do!” The world system would love to have us believe this. But despite what the media would want to portray, the truth is NO, ALL MEN DON’T! Dr. Patrick Carnes, Founder of the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction, and one of the nation’s leading authorities on sexual addiction, defines sexual addiction as any sexually-related, compulsive behavior which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family, friends, loved ones, and one’s work environment. In its simplest form, sexual addiction is a progressive, compulsive pattern of sexually acting out behaviors. It manifests itself as a loss of control over one’s sexual behaviors, where one is powerless to independently stop their sexual acting out, despite adverse consequences, as well as a sincere desire and efforts to stop. There are triggers which lead to the acting out behaviors. These triggers can be such things as stress, fear of abandonment, experiencing a loss, anxiety, etc. Understanding the addiction… It is important to know and understand that sexual addiction is not one single pattern of behavior. For example, some are of the belief that one who is guilty of infidelity is a sex addict. Sexual addiction is not the same thing as
an isolated incident of infidelity. Sexual addiction exhibits a pattern of behavior that take over one’s life and these behaviors become unmanageable. Examples of behaviors that can be an indicator of sexual addiction can include compulsive sexual episodes with multiple partners, compulsive masturbation, engaging in pornography (which is a gateway to sexual addiction), or engaging in chronic affairs, just to name a few. As mentioned in the definition, sexual addiction negatively interferes with one’s life. Because the sexually addicted person is unable to manage their behaviors, the addictive behavior impacts one’s job, finances, relationships, self-esteem and sense of self worth. A person’s need to engage in or act out consumes them and thus overrides their ability to delay the behavior or even to cease the behavior due to the possible consequences.... Consider if you will a person who has been terminated from their place of employment for downloading and viewing pornography on their computer while at work. They were fully aware that their work computers are monitored, but the urge to satisfy the triggered emotion outweighed the thought of the possible consequences.
Now, with the termination of their job, they face additional consequences such as loss of income, possible legal action from their place of employment, having to disclose to their spouse the reason for termination, the list could continue. Understanding the entrapment… How does one become caught up in sexual addiction? The truth is, there are many ways in which a person can become ensnared. For one, there has been a correlation made between those who have been victims of sexual abuse and sexual addiction. This doesn’t mean that just because one was sexually abused that they are or will become a sex addict. When the effects of the abuse as well as the beliefs the person has regarding the abuse not properly worked through, there is potential for the individual to resort to dysfunctional behavior as a way of coping with the emotional and even psychological effects of the abuse.
a cycle in which she engages in time and time again. It is actually her false sense of love that is leading her to behaviors which result in the cycle of addictive behaviors. The effects of sexual addiction… Sexual addiction has devastating effects. Not only does it continually foster a myriad of false beliefs, but it robs a person of their identity, naturally and spiritually. A person entangled in the bondage of sexual addiction comes to believe that they are what they engage in. THERE IS NOTHING FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH. Sexual addiction gives a false sense of identity-a false sense of femininity/masculinity. It enables one to present a facade, a false sense of self.
Sexual addiction robs one of true intimacy. It doesn’t allow a person to connect spiritually, relationally or even emotionally with another. Intimacy involves the exposure of the authentic self; who one really is, their fears, their likes, dislikes, dreams, aspirations, etc. Intimacy Sexual addiction provides one is not the absence of fear of with a false sense of intimacy. It does not provide one with a sense exposure, but rather the of emotional attachment or securi- willingness to expose with your ty. presented in this article; the person who lost their job. The disclosure of the addiction is now made known to their spouse. Now not only is their spouse emotionally impacted experiencing feelings of shock, disbelief, disappointment, hurt, etc, but additional stressors such as guilt, confusion and experiencing fear of what the discovery will mean to the relationship must be dealt with. If untreated, sexual addiction, just as any other addiction, can destroy lives. It can bring an end to careers, to relationships. Sexual addiction can also have devastating physical effects. For those who engage in such activities multiple sex partners, there is the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. There is also a safety risk. There are some sexually addicted individuals who find people to engage with online, or via the telephone, and meet or “hook up.” This type of danger has the potential to place one in harmful situations as well. Emotionally, sexual addiction takes a toll on the individual and those connected to them. For the one struggling with the addiction, the secrecy, feelings, of shame, guilt, and even disgust, often times leads to additional emotional stressors such as depression and anxiety. For the one connected, they can experience such emotional turmoil, that they too can exhibit signs of depression and anxiety. It is not uncommon for spouses or partners to experience symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder as a s result of the cycle of addictive behaviors. How to Overcome Habitual Sins and Addictions with Christ
C
an you relate to these words, “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing” (Rom 7:19)?
sinner free. The Scriptures affirm, “For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted” (Heb 2:18).
However, “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted” (Heb 2:18). He is “one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Heb 4:15). Jesus revealed that sin enslaves those who commit sin, and the Truth will set all free (John 8:31–36). God’s Word is Truth and the Spirit is Truth (John 17:17; 1 John 5:6). The Spirit revealed all Truth to His Apostles, and He speaks to everyone through the words of Scripture (John 16:13; 2 Pet 1:20–21). Many Christians have overcome temptations by the Truth, and yet for others, the Truth appears unfinished within them.
To begin walking in the Spirit, one must believe to become obedient to the Gospel (Rom 6:17; 2 Thess 1:7–9). The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the Gospel that saves believers (1 Cor 15:1–4). Each confessing believer must die with Christ repenting of their sins, be buried with Christ by baptism in His name, and be raised with Christ into the newness of life (Rom 6:1–7, Col 2:11– 13). This is when God raises the believer with Christ and saves the
The Scriptures foretell the enslavement, guilt, and devastation when people sin. However, Christ is able to help everyone overcome temptations, habitual sin, and addictions. God transforms Christians by the renewing of the mind (Rom 12:1–2). Christians overcome slavery to fleshly desires and passions by focusing on the Spirit (Rom 8:5–6). Furthermore, “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Gal 5:16). What does walking in the Spirit mean? Walking by the Spirit is living that produces the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal 5:22–24). Note that the lust of the flesh consist of more than sexual immorality. Works of the flesh include jealousy, rage, divisiveness, drunkenness, sinful partying, and more (Rom 13:13–14; Gal 5:19–21). Walking in the Spirit is the way of escape. There is always a way to escape from temptation (1 Cor 10:12–13). Christ can set the 50 | SUMMER 2015
believer by His grace (Eph 2:4–6). Only after this can someone put to death sin (Col 3:1–5). This faith is essential to start putting to death sin. (1) Become aware what separates you from God. Questions: **How do you feel about repeatedly giving into the same temptations? **Do you feel sorrow for your sin? **Do you feel shame, guilt, stress and selfish after giving into sin? **Will giving into temptations help you stop sinning and grow closer to God and Christ? **Do you know how to stop these desires from dominating your mind and body (Rom 6:12; 8:5–6)? **Do you believe that your behavior is separating you from God? **How does this behavior change you? **How regularly do you allow sin to live in you and rule over you? Scriptures:
“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts” (Rom 6:12). “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear” (Isa 59:2). “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled” (Col 1:21; cf. Eph 4:17–19). “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:1–4). “Therefore subordinate to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (Jas 4:7–10; cf. Acts 17:26–27). (2) Realize the devastating results of what enslaves you. Questions: **Can you see through temptations that result in stress and shame? “What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed?” (Rom 6:20–23) In other words, what comes from giving into sinful temptations? **Do you see regret and ruin on the other side of this behavior? **What is the result of even imagining giving into sinful temptations? **What parts of your behavior do you regret? Are there parts that you do not regret?
http://godsbreath.net/2012/12/12/how-to-overcome-addictions-with-christ/
**What parts of your actions will ruin you? **Do you consider that your behavior may hurt others?**What will happen if you continue this sinful behavior until you stand before God? **Do you want God to help you change and live a holy life? Scriptures: “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (Jas 1:14–15). “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,” (Heb 10:26, cf. 1 John 3:4–9). “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,” (Rom 2:5, cf. 2:6–11). Jesus declared, “Fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast into Gehenna; yes, I say to you, fear this One” (Luke 12:5, cf. Matt 10:26–28, Rev 19:20, 20:10). Christ taught, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matt 7:21). “What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death” (Rom 6:21). (3) Embrace your way of escape. Questions: **Are you willing to change your heart and mind to overcome these temptations (Rom 8:5–6; 12:2; Gal 5:16)? **How aware are you of the guilt, ruin, and devastation that these sins will produce before giving into the temptations? **Are temptations common to
everyone (1 Cor 10:12–13)? Will desires tempt you again (Jas 1:14–15)? **Do you really believe that God is faithful not to allow sin to tempt you beyond what you are able (1 Cor 10:13)? **Will giving into the same temptations help decrease temptations and help you to escape sin? **Will enduring temptations help you overcome them (1 Cor 10:13)? *Will you have to bear certain urges for some time to overcome them (1 Cor 10:13)? **If you obey sinful desires, will these continue to denominate you (Rom 6:12)? **What good and joyful things can replace your temptations (Gal 5:16–24)? **Will surrounding yourself with temptations help you escape them? (Rom 13:13–14, 1 Cor 15:33) **What must you do to avoid temptations to prevent giving into them? Will you have to end some friendships and disconnect other influences? Scriptures: “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Gal 5:16). “And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof ” (Gal 5:24). Jesus said, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. […] Jesus answered them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin’” (John 8:31–34). “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it” (1 Cor 10:13). “Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for
the flesh, to gratify its desires” (Rom 13:14). “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’” (1 Cor 15:33). “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Rom 8:5–6, cf. 12:2). (4) Believe in a better life in God with Christ. Questions: *What are some ways that life will improve when you stop giving into these temptations? *How do you feel about living without sin — no longer doing evil? *How clear will your conscience feel to end these sins? *How pure will your heart and mind become without giving into sin? *How would you describe God’s blessings when you are able to stop this sin? *How much closer will you be to God? *Will you be able to encourage and help others? *How much will your confidence increase when you walk in the light knowing that Christ’s blood washes away all of your sins (1 John 1:7)? Scriptures: “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,” (Titus 2:11–12). (2 Cor 5:14–15).(Gal 5:22–25). (Phil 4:8)(Rom 8:14–15)Rom 8:31–32).(Rom 8:37). Other Scriptures: Matt 11:28–30; Rom 8:1–39; Eph 1:3; Heb 2:16– 18; 4:15–16; 2 Pet 2:9. *Prayerfully study these Scriptures daily, set your mind on the Spirit, and thus walk by the Spirit. May God bless everyone reading this and struggling with an addictive sin to allow the Word of God to overcome this sin from within the heart. SUMMER 2015 51

Let’s welcome Jordan Robinson
Graphic Artist & weSPARKLES’S Layout Designer
W
hat makes life interesting, for many, is the element of surprise; there is a fascination and a fear associated with the unknown. Jordan Robertson is an artist who has recently became involved with our magazine; currently, he designs the layouts and edits the overall space for the magazine. The first thing to know about him is his consistent inconsistency. Duality, believe it or not, is very similar to the unknown, and this is his inspiration for his work. A fine artist Duality is his current focus for many reasons. For most of his life, conflict coming from two, or more, sides has been on the fore-front of his mind. It began as a conflict between neighborhood friends, breaking up fights and mediating between arguing parties. Later, his understanding of conflict grew from his exposure to the ism’s” regarding race, sex, color, lgbt, and so on. By his pre-teens, conflict had become this cancerous notion; an endless problem that seemed solvable. Using this as motivation, Jordan incorporates ideas and possible solutions to the problem that he sees. One example is a campaign titled “yours” which is a series of designs, with the Overall message “we are here for each other”. This message becomes more specific in
the various designs he makes. In his painting, he experiments with conflict between two “forces”: Thought and Feeling. He explained at his last exhibition, “Originally, I had imagined my paintings to be this ‘clash’, this battle between feeling, the impulsive and instinctual aspect of our choices and thought, the technicality and logistic side. Although I saw the tension and conflict in my first painting, the second one surprised me, as my process changed. Using this idea, Jordan has been working on this notion for the past two years and is writing about it on the blog and in other content on his website. He is planning a relaunch of his website. As an artist, he has been trained in using both “traditional” artmaking, such ass his paintings and illustrations, and digital artwork. In most of his work, he tries to incorporate both every time, or relate them to each other in some way.
and it would make sense that consistent actions are reflections of his, or her, character. However, it can also be argued that people take action based on their character. So when a person contradicts him, or her, self, does this destroy their character? This is one of a few ideas, Jordan explores and is searching for ways to express this conversation in his work.
Lately, his projects have been slow, since he plans to relaunch everything, but he states he is excited about the projects to come and has given them thought for a while. In September, he will be making his presence known in Midtown Atlanta area, as he is currently a student at Savannah’s College of Art and Design for his M.A. in Arts Administration. The team of weSparkle, and weShine, are excited to see more of his work, and he is excited to share in the near future. More information about his work, and him as an artist, can be found at jordanthomasrobinson. Other themes about his work wordpress.com and the relaunch relate to identity. As stated before, is scheduled for the 7th of August. the unknown is both feared and desired. After going to her Facebook page, stalking it for a while and checking out her website, I discovered this woman was an entrepreneur and an author as well as very multitalented. She gave me her book to read, which I could not put down until I finished it, so I decided to meet her. After doing a face to face interview, which I wish we had on camera, she became our first beautiful face on our very first issue of weSPARKLE magazine for her book; Unbreakable Destiny: This Broken Vessel ; and now, she has done it again. Body Detox
I was introduced to this product a few months ago by a very good friend of mine, Dr. Stacey Johnson. She is a chiropractor and an amazing woman of God. Years ago we stumbled upon some weight-loss products that really worked, but they was soon taken off of the market. Because of the visible success of this product, it was very hard to find any thing comparable. Even though Iaso tea is not just for weightloss, it is an added bonus. Why do I like this product? Because it works! Not only did I lose 5lbs in one week, I just felt better and didn’t miss a day of elimination. How do I know it was the product? I am a vegetarian and I normally eat a lot of greens and drink green juice and smoothies daily but I still don’t eliminate daily and have the overall feeling of wellness like I did when I was drinking this product. (I also ran out so I really can tell the difference.) According to the website here are the Main Benefits of Drinking TLC Iaso Detox Tea Significantly Improves irregularity and constipation. Increases digestion of nutrients consumed and their absorption. *Makes people lose weight. *Provides a natural yet calm energy boost! *Increases cognitive function(brain function), allowing you to think better! *Improves systems of Allergies and Hayfever . *Cleanses out toxins from drugs, pollution and other harmful toxins. *Cleanses and keeps healthy your Colon, Kidneys, Lungs and Liver. *Destroys Parasites and Candida, it also is an anti-bacterial which destroys harmful bacteria’s in your body. Now I know everyones body is different and what works for one person may not work for everyone, but for me, this is one of my favorites.
