2010-2011 Academic Competitions Study and Dedication Brings Success
Our students eagerly take part in the academic competitions scheduled each year. Although participation requires teams to devote long hours to after school preparation, WCS is represented yearly at the TAPPS Academic Meet, Texas Christian Schools Interscholastic Tournament (TCSIT), and Science Olympiad. Successfully qualifying in our district, six WCS high school students travelled to Concordia University, to compete in the TAPPS Academic Meet. Individual accomplishments include 4th in Number Sense and 1st in Advanced Math by WCS senior Jeffrey Guillot. Junior Andrea Guevara, placed 3rd in Spanish, junior Giselle Johnson secured 1st place in Poetry Interpretation and junior Michelle Fang claimed 1st in Mathematics. WCS placed 5th overall, out of twenty-one teams in attendance. TCSIT also offers competition in several sub-categories of speaking and writing events, however it is open to private schools of both Texas and Oklahoma, and includes Bible events. Over forty middle school and
high school students competed on behalf of WCS, with twenty-four members advancing to the final round of competition within their respective categories. Six of these students finished first in the state, with perhaps our most notable results coming from senior Jeffrey Guillot who placed among the top 6 in five events. Jeffrey finished 6th in Comprehensive Science, 5th in Calculator and 1st in Number Sense, Comprehensive Math and Team Math. Science Olympiad is the final academic competition attended by WCS students. Four students earned individual medals. Katherine Harper (8th grade) and Bailey Perez (6th grade) placed 3rd in Science Crime Busters while high schoolers Matthew Smith and Cody Rowe finished 2nd in Remote Sensing. “It is encouraging to consistently have so many students interested in representing Westbury Christian by participating in these competitions,” said Head of School, Mr. Greg Glenn. “I commend this year’s participants for the success they were able to achieve through diligence and hard work.”

Mrs. Turner, Mr. Zhao - Teachers of the Year Distinguished Teachers Recognized for Excellence
The faculty of Westbury Christian School is comprised of talented and faithfully committed teachers who strive to offer our students a top notch education in a Christian environment. Each year a lower school and upper school Teacher of the Year are selected to represent our gifted staff based upon their efforts and positive impact throughout the school year. The awards for the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year were presented to lower school teacher, Mrs. Annette Turner and to upper school teacher, Mr. Wen Zhao. Mrs. Turner has been a teacher at Westbury Christian for the past three years. Aside from her responsibilities in the classroom, teaching 6th grade Reading, she currently serves as the Director of lower school curriculum and instruction, the head of the WCS chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society, and the head coach of both the middle school and upper school varsity cheerleading squads. A graduate of Spellman College, Mrs. Turner has successfully mastered the ability to garner her student’s trust and respect while maintaining high expectations in the classroom and helping them foster an interest in education. She constantly displays her tremendous faith in Jesus Christ, and reinforces the WCS mission of Kingdom Education through her attitude and her actions. “I hope to inspire my students to develop a passion for learning about any and everything that interests them,” she
said. “I encourage my students to expand their minds and always strive for excellence using the special gifts God has blessed them with. They are all talented and I hope to help them recognize their strengths spiritually, academically, and socially. I pray this will help them believe in themselves and in their ability to learn.” In praise of Mrs. Turner and her accomplishments, Middle School Principal, Mr. Casey Farris stated, “we are blessed to have Mrs. Turner at WCS. She has an incredible passion for teaching and kids, and provides a Godly example to not only our students, but also our staff.”
Upper school teacher, Mr. Wen Zhao, teaches AP and Pre-AP Biology and Anatomy and Physiology. He has been a member of the Westbury Christian School faculty for two years. He holds a Bachelor of Sciences in Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of California, Davis, and earned a Masters of Sciences & Engineering in Engineering Biotechnology & Molecular Cell Biology from the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Zhao takes academics seriously, and continues to broaden his knowledge of Science and instruction. This summer he will participate in a Science and Engineering Program for teachers, at MIT. Out of over 1,000 applicants, he was selected to fill one of only 40 spots available in the program. When asked what is most fulfilling about his position, Mr. Zhao said he feels most rewarded when he gets to witness students grow, whether through positive or negative reinforcements. "To see students learn crucial lessons ought to be a teacher’s greatest joy,” he said. “For every complement or detention I give, I pray that becomes an opportunity for the student to learn an important lesson.” According to Mr. Greg Glenn, Head of School, “Mr. Zhao is a tremendous asset to WCS. He has played a large role in the transforming of our Science Department, heightening expectations and opportunities for our students. His willingness to continue expanding his knowledge of Science is an awesome example and will lend benefit to his growth as a teacher.”
Athletic Accomplishments
Individual and Team Efforts Set Record Highs Wildcat athletes have a lot to celebrate following the achievements earned in 20102011. Sixteen student athletes will continue their athletic careers on the collegiate level after receiving athletic scholarships in their respective sports. Eight sports, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, track, softball, golf, tennis, and baseball, were represented in the TAPPS 4A post-season playoffs. Our volleyball team marked their best finish in thirteen seasons, advancing to the Regional Semi-Finals. Golfers Christina Curtis, Alexis Fuller, Jayln Kuykendall, and Audrey Redd finished 2nd in the state team tournament. Audrey and Jayln also placed individually, with Jayln finishing 6th and Audrey securing 4th. Tyler Tolopka travelled to the state tennis tournament to represent WCS for the second year in a row. Both the girls and boys basketball teams played in the state final game. The boys fell to Arlington Grace Prep in the final minutes, but, Anthony Collins, Delvin Dickerson and Cody Glenn were named to the State AllTournament team. The girls also had three All-Tournament players in Fallon Ellis, Amber Orrange and Brianna Turner after defeating Concordia Lutheran, making them back-toback state champions. Wildcat baseball advanced the furthest
they have in WCS history. The boys fell to district rival Second Baptist in the State Semi-Finals, but 6 players were named to the All-District team and three earned AllState Tournament team honors. Cody Glenn and Dillon Thomas were also selected in the 2011 MLB Draft, a first for Westbury Christian School baseball. The track team took eight members to the state meet. Junior Gabe Simon tied his personal best by clearing 6'0 in the high jump to capture 4th place. William Washington finished as state champion in shot put. Just a sophomore, William beat several older, higher seeded opponents to set a personal record and claim the title. Individual accomplishments were also celebrated in 2011. Girls basketball standout, and 2011 WCS Valedictorian, Amber Orrange was selected to play on both the WBCA and McDonald’s All-America teams and was named the 2011 TAPPS Athlete of The Year, another first for Westbury Christian School athletics. “It has been a successful year,” said athletic director, Russell Carr. “The goal of our athletic program is to reach kids at a different level than can be achieved in the classroom or through bible classes. We are only getting better!”

May 3, WCS Lower School students and faculty participated in Rodeo Day. The students came dressed in Western attire and were entertained by representatives from The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Students learned the purpose of certain ‘cowboy’ gear, including lassos, chaps, and horseshoes, and explained the history and significance behind the world’s largest rodeo.
WCS Librarian, Mrs. Diane King, arranged for Houston’s Main Street Theater to entertain the Lower School with a performance of ‘Hank the Cowdog and the Incredible Corncob.’ The story provided lessons in friendship and encouraged students not to rely on material possessions in the hopes of obtaining happiness.
This May, K3-1st graders learned about life cycles through an interactive butterfly exhibit. Select students were invited in front of the audience and then outfitted in a butterfly costume to learn the special features of the bugs. There were live caterpillars, in and out of cocoons, and of course live butterflies, which willing participants were able to hold on the tips of their fingers and even let land on their nose.
Field Day 2011 was a big success! A section of the parking lot, the football field, and the driveway outside of Mundy Hall set the stage for several activities that Lower School students were invited to play. Some of the games included a balloon toss, scooter races, hula hoops, and an enormous parachute.

WCS Class of 2011 The Senior Experience
Senior Experience is in the second year of building a new tradition for the senior classes at Westbury Christian. This is a great opportunity for all of the seniors to be together and make shared memories in the few weeks prior to graduation day. In just two years, we have established some favorites of the trip like the ropes course, the male vs. female water balloon/shaving cream fight, capture the flag in the dark, and canoeing. We also take time for three devotionals, really better described as times of reflection in an effort to refocus on God and make preparations for the future. According to Senior Sponsor, Mrs. Catherine Tinkler, "this is a great tradition that really allows the seniors to let loose and have fun with each other before graduation. The time brings everyone closer together and it's exciting to see how the seniors interact with their classmates.”
An integral component within our approach to education comes from student involvement in community service. Throughout each school year we offer students several opportunities to aid those in need, both within our community and abroad, in an effort to help them develop a servant-minded attitude and recognize the value in assisting others. Since 1998, WCS Bible teacher Steve Hawley has visited Honduras eleven times, working with both TORCH Missions

and SHINE Missions. In conjunction with his trips, Coach Hawley spearheads the annual WCS Penny Drive, and calls upon the student body and faculty/staff to collect spare change. This year was no different, and our students truly answered the call collecting $9,800 to be divided between Jovenes en Camino and Mission Lazarus, two Honduran orphanages sponsored by Christians. Hawley stated, “After thirteen years of helping underprivileged children in Central America, it’s fair to say our Honduras project has become part of the fabric and culture of Westbury Christian School." Since 1998, WCS has collected in excess of $120,000 for this endeavor. To assist with the Honduras coin collection, WCS fourth grader Cana Matthys enlisted the help of her parents and held a garage sale with all proceeds going to Mission Lazarus. Her efforts raised $175.45, which she presented to Coach Hawley during chapel. According to Cana’s mom, Mrs. Rachel Matthys, “Cana collected all kinds of stuff to sell - everything from clothes to toys to furniture. She made signs and coordinated her helpers all on her own. It is a blessing as a parent to see her understand the benefit of serving others, it really meant a lot to her.”
