The Westbury Christian School Athletic Program is one part of the three dimensional model which is the foundation for our school. Our programs help to strengthen students physically, academically, and spiritually. Christian coaches make an impact as they train athletes in their sport and also in the development of a Christ-like attitude and spirit. The key to success in our athletic programs lies in the quality of our coaches, who I believe to be some of the best in Texas. Students participating in athletics will be affected and changed by the development and instruction received from their coaches. The wide diversity of sports we offer allows every student the opportunity to be involved outside of the classroom. All students are encouraged to compete and be involved in athletics. I am proud of our school, our programs, and our coaches. Everyone has been working hard and it shows in the development of our student athletes.

“In his second year as the Head Football Coach, Charlie Ward has opened new doors to the football ministry at Westbury Christian. With the diminishment of a high school junior varsity team, replaced with an opening of a middle school team, the roaring motto of the Wildcat’s ‘One Heart, One Mind, One Spirit,’ has moved along the halls of the middle school kids on campus. The middle school football team was opened not only for the physical exercise and competitive battle, but also for the increasing growth in brotherhood and fellow-
ship with other Christian athletes. With new pads, equipment, jerseys, and coaches these young men will have access to what senior tight-end Jon Scott calls ‘life lessons taught on the gridiron.’ Quarterback Nicholas Leonard reflects, ‘I have enjoyed playing under Coach Ward and the football ministry that he has developed. I know that with hard work and determination the middle school team will have a good season. I look forward to seeing them play WCS varsity football in the future’.” - ASHTON FONTENOT, RB/FS
“There are basically three major areas I want to focus on and teach to the middle school team this year. I expect each player to learn the fundamentals of offense, defense and special teams. I want each player to learn to work as a team, thinking of their teammates before themselves. I want to teach the students how to win no matter what the score board says.”

“The challenge for this year’s team is to build upon the foundation that was laid last year by our Senior Class that gave their best effort to uphold the slogan of “We Are One.” As we look forward to this year, we have great potential to exceed last year’s mark but it won’t be easy. Our guys have worked hard this summer to improve their bodies so they can become stronger and faster athletes. Our summer saw us compete in the Second Baptist 7 on 7 Summer League which we won four out of seven contests. We also scrimmaged a few public schools which was a step up and our guys held their own and then some. We
competed against Westbury HS, Bush HS and Westside HS. We were able to kick-off this season with a lock-in that had 21 players attend and they enjoyed being around each other because they were all laughing and joking during bed time, dinner and fellowship time. We had great participation from our parents on this event. Some of the parents provided a financial contribution and others came out to cook the meals and prepare midnight snacks. We have established an attitude that we are believers with no compromise and we aren’t going to let anything stop us from reaching our goals. There will be challenges
along the way this year but nonetheless, we will believe in the God that has created us to give us the strength to meet each and every challenge head on and not give up until we win. Even though our numbers are down from last year, we are looking for a great year in our quest to win our District and make the playoffs, achieve academically, and please God in whatever we do.”

“The 2009 season should be a very exciting season for the Lady ‘Cats. The volleyball team returns all members from last year’s team, and adds freshman Autumn Arnold. Autumn is an outstanding Freshman addition, who led her team to an undefeated season as an 8th grader and helped lead the middle school team to a conference title. With a freshman on the varsity team, leadership will be a key to unity and cohesion. The ‘Cats will look to seniors Courtney Eagleton, Victoria Apenteng, Cami Olson, and Gina Rosolino. All four players are letter winners
and have gained experience competing in a tough TAPPS 4-A district. The district includes final four finalist Lutheran North, and is rounded out by the tough Second Baptist, and Fort Bend Baptist teams. When you add sophomore Emma Hulsey and junior Rachael Strom, the Lady ’Cats have a great chance to improve and will definitely be making some noise in district and state play.”

“Wildcat Cross Country had a good season last year despite being a first for the coach and for most of the runners. All of the athletes improved over the course of the season and the team finished 14th at the State. This year has brought a more structured Summer schedule as well as a more organized start to the season. More meets have been scheduled which will provide more race opportunities for our runners. I expect to see times continue to drop. I’d like for each of the runners to PR (personal record) and break into the Top 10 at the State Cross Country Meet. Luke Aschermann, De André Beadle, Elvan
Young and junior Nicholas Hall all had strong track seasons last Spring which should put us in good position for this Fall. Nicholas is probably the one to look out for at this point in the season, but all are dedicated, hard workers. Devin Munoz returns as the sole girl from last year. “As plans were being made this year, student leaders from the WCS band took one of their summer days to visit the Texas Bandmasters Convention in San Antonio and participate in a day of activities focused on developing great leaders in the band program. Band members had an exciting day of listening to professionals on their instrument and visiting various booths in the convention center. This experience gave the students a glimpse of what is happening in high school band music across the state and the directors had an
opportunity to view new and exciting music for this school year. School started with a lot of new music and high expectations to play more music. Each week we are looking forward to adding tunes for the enjoyment of those coming to the games. The directors are particularly pleased to see the individual attention to detail taken by students this year to play songs correctly. We are excited to see the band take the necessary steps forward to continue the success of all organizations rooted in the fantastic tradition of Wildcat Pride!
As we look forward to a great year in the band, we are also looking forward to the time we can spend supporting the success of all WCS athletes as they travel the path of champions. “Wildcat Varsity cheerleading is in full swing this season. After having tryouts in March, we took our 14 squad members to camp at SAGU. While at camp, we won many awards and ended up placing third in overall competition with a bid to nationals. Starting the school year off, the squad was joined by our ever loveable Wildcat mascot. They have all been working diligently to provide better cheers and encourage school spirit. We have added a ton of new stunts and routines to our répertoire.
Westbury Christian has also enhanced our mini-cheerleading program and we added a middle school cheer squad. You might notice the number of girls in cheerleading uniforms on campus has greatly increased. As our season is the longest of any athletic activity, the squad is ready to persevere and help cheer our teams to victory. Go Wildcats!”

“Last year we finished the season 33-6, and won the TAPPS 4A State Basketball Championship. Led by Seniors Kevin Perry and Adam Boyd the boy’s team came together and worked hard to achieve the goals and standards they set for themselves at the beginning of the year. After graduating two extremely talented players, we return eight lettermen of which five are Seniors, so we have a great core group of players returning. Senior leadership will be expected from Justin Foreman, Ashton Fontenot, Anthony Brancato, Nicholas Leonard, Nick Shepherd and the newest addition, senior Lante Phillips. Junior ballers Anthony Collins,
Langstyn Williams, and Cody Glenn also return from the ‘08-’09 State Championship team. There is very little inexperience on this team and their strong leadership will be a definite strength. This year Tyler Guidry, Vasquez Haynes, Saro Ntagha, and Hasani Sumbry will be new to the Varsity team. We are expecting them to bring added depth to an already experienced roster. It should be a fun year for Wildcat Basketball. The 2009-2010 ‘Cats are playing a tough non-conference schedule which includes Beaumont Westbrook, Lamar, Bellaire, St. Thomas, and Westside to prepare them for their district. We are also scheduled
to appear in several prestigious local and out-of-state tournaments like the HISD Tournament, Antonian Tip-Off, Elite Jamboree, YMBL Tournament, and MLK Dream Classic in Chicago, IL. These tough games and tournaments will help strengthen the Wildcats as they make another run at a State title.”

“Don’t underestimate that Lady Wildcat tradition! After the dream season we enjoyed last year, the question could be asked, ‘How do you duplicate that success with this year’s team?’ The answer may lie in the Senior leadership that the 2009-10 squad will enjoy. Despite losing five outstanding seniors, our team will have seven returning letter-winners with valuable championship experience and we are adding five new teammates through transfer and call up from the JV team. Our nine seniors will be relied upon to understand their
roles, play team basketball, and make the necessary sacrifices to be the best team in the country. We should be one of the most poised teams in the country that can play any style of team and have a chance to compete. The strengths of the team start with speed and the ability to shoot the ball well. We will be a guard dominated team that likes to run, press, and set up teammates for open perimeter shots. So, how do we duplicate last year’s Championship season? We don’t have to duplicate it. This
team is completely different but equally as lethal. We must focus on this year and not what was done well last year. We have a much more challenging schedule locally, state-wide, and nationally and we are grateful that past teams have put us in that position. We need to trust each other and come ready to work every day so that we can meet the challenges that we have in front of us. It is a privilege to be a part of Lady Wildcat basketball.”

“I have high expectations for the team this year and hope that we can accomplish a lot throughout our season. I want my players to believe in themselves, each other, and in their coaches. I will be looking for strong senior leadership from our returning starters Cameron Braun, Philip Zamora, and Andrew Fitzpatrick. If the boys come together and gel both on the field and off before the season begins, I feel we can pick up where last year’s team left off and earn a playoff berth. Last year’s soccer squad really surprised themselves with how close they came to
making the playoffs. The team finished sixth in our district. We narrowly missed the playoffs by only one game. We have lost several key members of last year’s group, but I think there is a nucleus of strong returning players who can help us have an exciting season. The skill and experience of players from last year and the freshness of the new players added this year give me confidence that we are heading toward a great 2009-2010 soccer season.”

“Last year’s Soccer season was difficult in the terms of wins and losses. Scoring was low, but the defense could hang with any team in the district. This season brings about a fresh start and hopefully a deeper roster. I plan on working on overall fitness and sport specific skills. “We are looking forward to a great 20092010 swim season. Last year our swimmers were very strong and represented our school in an outstanding way. Several of our student athletes qualified for the State Swim Meet and we even won a few medals. The team graduated only one senior so our returning participants are experienced and eager to improve on the times and performances of last season. We will have strong senior leaders who will help our team pull together and will be really encouraging to the less experienced swimmers.
Our new swimmers look promising as well. I think they will add a lot to our team, both in speed and in character. We have a strong schedule this year and each meet should be a challenge which will help us grow stronger. I am excited to see what our individual and team groupings will accomplish. Westbury Christian School strives for high academic success among their students in all subjects. Whether they are teaching English or Math, History or Science, Spanish or Literature, teachers at WCS present their materials from a Christian perspective while preparing students for their future. Through molded classroom instruction, assignments, and tests, college preparation is stressed in the curriculum as WCS guides each student to recognize the importance of academic preparation for college. The College Board, whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity through a commitment to excellence and equity in education, has recommended that high school students have a rigorous upper school curriculum to be well prepared for college. Because WCS is committed to the development and success of its students, both while they walk the halls of its southwest Houston campus and throughout the rest of their educational careers and professional lives, WCS offers each of its students a rigorous curriculum to prepare them for college and life. Two studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education found that the academic intensity of a student’s high school curriculum (including the taking of AP classes) is highly predictive of college graduation. The diploma awarded to each student who completes the requirements for graduation at Westbury Christian reflects the standards recommended by the State of Texas for college preparation, making each WCS graduate a Texas Scholar. In addition, students at WCS can enhance their education by taking one or more of the Advanced Placement classes offered.

This program provides students and their families with age appropriate information to plan for college and to inspire students to think beyond the present. The College Board also prepares and administers the PSAT and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). WCS makes the College Board’s Official SAT Online Prep Course available to all WCS high school students to help them prepare to perform their best on the standardized test that plays a major role in the college admissions process. Almost all WCS graduates attend college. Some choose to stay in Houston and attend one of the area’s local universities: Houston Baptist University, Rice University, University of Houston, and University of St. Thomas. Others attend private universities associated with the church of Christ or other religious organizations. Still others attend universities in Texas, including Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UT-Austin, or schools from the Ivy League, the PAC Ten, the Big Ten, or the SEC.

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:8 This year Westbury Christian has been blessed by the addition of Coach Kenneth Okwuonu and Mrs. Kelly Edmiston. As campus ministers and mentors, these two have been working hard to build an engaging and meaningful spiritual climate at our school. Their daily activities include mentoring students, planning service projects, and organizing chapel services. Senior Syundai Johnson comments, “As new editions to the school Coach O and Mrs. Kelly have really gone the extra mile when preparing chapel. Not only are they getting students involved through singing, but they have started a new voluntary skit group. Their efforts help boost the spiritual mind set of the student body and make chapel more exciting.” Chapel, as a significant part of the spiritual life on campus, has a theme this year of “Leadership” specifically focused on looking at what it means to live as a servant leader in our world. This year WCS has been blessed to see an increase in student leadership and participation in chapel already. Students are involved weekly in skits, scripture reading, prayers, and sharing testimonies. In addition to students taking a more public leadership role, there is also a student chapel planning team that meets frequently to discuss, evaluate, pray for and plan chapel. These elements are giving students ownership and responsibility over chapel as well as giving them opportunities to act on what they are learning
about leadership on a day to day basis. This approach to chapel planning works for student Devin Munoz who states that “with this student involvement, chapels are designed to meet the liking of students. Students are able to take the message from their peers and apply it to their lives.” The spiritual dimension at Westbury Christian provides each student with the opportunity to acknowledge and respond through faith to the Word of God while participating in activities beyond chapel including Dr. Farrar’s daily devotionals, engaging daily Bible classes, and various service opportunities. These service opportunities range from working at the Houston Food Bank, to volunteering at Impact church of Christ, to collecting Magi Boxes for needy children, as well as the “Pennies for Honduras” campaign. Thanks to Mr. Steve Hawley, WCS Bible teacher, students don’t have to leave the campus to do mission work. Each year WCS students are given a plastic bottle to save their pennies and change. At the end of the year, students bring in their bottle filled with coins and empty them into a large collection bin. This effort raises about $10,000 per year that goes to support the Jovenes en Camino Children’s Home in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27

“As the new head baseball coach at WCS, I like the changes that have already started to take place on campus. Our big goals for this season include contending for a district championship and making a run in the TAPPS State Playoffs. I would also like to instill a new mindset here in WCS Baseball. We want to come ready to work everyday. If every individual player and coach works hard, the wins and losses will take care of themselves. Our players have been working very hard this fall, as we have implemented an off season conditioning program. The Wildcat baseball team went 9-9 last season, which was a big improvement from the year before. This year
we will see even bigger improvements. We will still have a very youthful team on the field, but they will be an experienced team. The goal is to get everybody on the same page going into the year instead of finding our stride half way through district play. We have the chance to be very successful. We are taking things one day at a time, and we will do the same thing as the Spring approaches.�

“The 2010 Lady Wildcat softball team is looking to build off of last year’s season. “The ‘08-’09 Golf Season was the most productive in WCS history. The Lady’s Varsity produced a 5th Place finish in the ‘09 TAPPS 4A State Championship (just a few shots out of 4th place), 3rd at Regionals, and brought home 2nd at District. Our all-underclassmen team, led by phenom captain Kelsey Haynie, shot a team best 443 in the final round at State. Our Boy‘s Varsity had a growing season and several new players were added to the roster. Our MS players progressed well and brought home their own share of tournament ‘hardware’ in three tournaments. As a group, our MS and HS programs competed in 14
spring tournaments, hosting the inaugural Wildcat Shootout and Wildcat Invitational Tournaments, and again hosted the 4-4A District Championship. In all, we had another extraordinary, recordsetting year. In 2009-2010, we are setting our sights on even higher finishes, lower scores, better golf swings, and more practical golf knowledge. With the return of our entire roster of Lady Wildcats, the addition of Titlest Performance Institute fitness screening and training programs, high-speed video instruction, access to additional courses, and the possible addition of a third golf coach to our staff, we believe we
will have another record-setting year in Wildcat Golf Country! WCS Golf is a Christ-centered golf program, founded upon fundamental principles of golf, leading methods in golf training and teaching, and emphasis on a lifelong commitment to goal setting, maintaining emotional and intellectual perspective, and plain old ‘hard work.’ We welcome all MS and HS students, from beginners to ‘scratch’ handicaps, to join the team and grow with us in this ‘Game for a Lifetime!’”

“This past Spring went well for the boys team as a whole due to the talented and large senior class. They finished 4th at State, including a 4X400 State Championship relay team. Several underclassmen will have the opportunity to step up and perform in the vacancies left by the Seniors. I have full confidence that those student leaders will set high expectations and work hard to fulfill them. The girls also did well last year and lost only a couple of seniors. I expect this year’s seniors, led by Victoria Apenteng and Kassie Gurnell, to turn up the heat. I believe they have the potential this year
to do what the boys did last Spring. Jarrick Jack should come on strong to lead the field events this Spring. Kassie Gurnell has shattered records left and right and is in position to have an incredible senior season, along with Victoria Apenteng. Nicholas Hall and Cameron Thomas will also look to lead the team in their events. Several other underclassmen will also have an opportunity to step up and fill roles.”

WILDCAT S in the SPOTLIGHT KYLE CRAGLE Gymnastics
Kyle Cragle, a WCS 8th grader, brought home two Junior National Championship gold medals and one silver medal this past June from the U.S. Junior Olympic National Tumble and Trampoline Championships, which were held in San Jose, California. Kyle, formerly a multiple Junior State Champion in Levels 5-7 men’s artistic gymnastics, moved to the Tumble and Trampoline disciplines in May 2008. In his first competition season, he won the Texas (South) State Jr. Championship in all three events: Trampoline and Double-Mini Trampoline (levels 8) and Tumbling (level 7) as well as the USAG Region III Junior Championship in Trampoline (level 8) and Tumbling (level 7). Kyle also brought home 2nd Place finishes in the USAG Region III event in Tumbling and the Double-Mini Trampoline, as well as a 2nd Place at the Junior Olympic Nationals in Trampoline (level 8). He recently moved his training from Houston Gymnastics Academy, home to the Head Coach of the U.S. Men’s Olympic Gymnastics team, Kevin Mazeika, to the Gymnast Factory, in West University. Kyle has been promoted to level 9 for the 2009-2010 season, and his new coaches believe he will continue to make great strides toward his ultimate goal of becoming an Olympian and Cirque du Soleil performer!
KASSIE GURNELL Track and Field
Senior Kassie Gurnell is making a name for herself as she competes in WCS and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) events during the school year and summer. After a successful sophomore appearance at the 2008 TAPPS State Track Meet with medals in the high jump (6th), the 200 meter (3rd), and the 400 meter (3rd) Kassie worked hard to return to the State her junior year. Finishes at the state meet in 2009 included 2nd in the 200 meter (00:25.87), 2nd in the 400 meter (00:59.22), 2nd in the high jump (5’3”) and a 1st place finish in the triple jump (37’ 08.25”). These four event stats were also recorded as WCS school records. Kassie also holds a fifth school record in the 300 meter hurdles (00:52.54). Concentrating on running during the summer, Kassie placed in two AAU district qualifiers in the 200 meter (5th and 6th) and 400 meter (both 3rd place) which made her eligible to participate in the 400 meter at the AAU National Junior Olympics at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. Kassie trains with WCS Cross Country and Track Coach Nathan Wagner. Her best Cross Country finish this season is 8th in district with an opportunity to run in the state meet on October 17th, 2009. She is also under the training of Coach Allen Ingrahem a former U.S. Olympic runner in the 400 meter dash and Coach Alexa Orrange a former U.S. Olympic triple jumper. Kassie is thankful not only to these coaches but also to her parents whom she calls her support system for her track goals as well as the major influence in keeping her focused on academics. Kassie states that “they are the ones who encourage me to train to reach my full potential in athletics and academics.” As a senior, Kassie is considering the Air Force Academy and Rice University as possible higher education and competitive track options.
Kelsey Haynie Golf
Kelsey Haynie, a senior at WCS, finished 6th last year at the 4A State Golf Tournament after playing for only 14 months full time. Since then, she has worked hard on her golf game and entered more than 21 golf tournaments in Texas. These tournaments are sponsored by the Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT.com), the Houston Golf Association (HGA), the Texas Junior Legends Tour (TJLT), and the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA.com). All of these tournaments lead to both a state and national ranking as posted on the Golfweek.com web page - the same organization that ranks the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and Ladies Professional Golfers Association (LPGA) tours. After the TAPPS 4A State Championship, Kelsey played enough TJGT tournaments to be ranked 15th in Texas. The points earned in these tournaments were used to qualify entry in the AJGA tour tournaments. All of these points gave Kelsey a national Junior Women’s ranking of 459th place. Kelsey believes that a key component to this success has been the constant interest, belief, and support from Coach Cragle and Coach Tinkler as well as the entire school’s support in her bid to win a college scholarship and go on to play on the LPGA tour. No athlete ever achieves greatness without support from the most unlikely of sources. She states “that in my case at WCS, Dr. Lacey supplies support to my demanding schedule, Mr. White supports my curriculum, and my friends all understand that after school is spent on golf, and not hanging around.” These things are important, and we all wish Kelsey well on achieving her goals in golf and representing WCS this year at State and beyond.

The WCS Athletic Association is an organization for parent volunteers who want to enhance the school’s athletic programs and build school spirit. The primary activity is fundraising to provide for top-notch equipment and facilities which also helps to keep tuition and athletic fees as reasonable as possible. Fundraising activities used in past years have included the annual membership drive, operating all concession stands at athletic events, a holiday fruit and poinsettia sale, and the annual golf tournament as well as seeking grants and donations from area businesses and foundations.
