It was a weekend of tears and laughter, picture-taking and reminiscing at the Lighthouse Restaurant as Eli El-Chantiry put in his final hours as owner behind the counter.

“It was very emotional for us.

Don’t ask if I cried,” he said, managing a weak laugh. “Big men don’t cry.”

Eli and Maha have sold their Constance Bay lunch bar business they’ve run for 22 years to Mohammad (Mike) Saad, of Happy Times Pizzeria in Carp.

“I still love the Lighthouse and will continue to help out on Saturdays and Sundays (for the next five weeks),” he said.

“But I’m running for re-election.

But perhaps what he doesn’t like most of all is the silence that now pervades.

El-Chantiry agreed with a comment from one of the many well-wishers who stopped in: buying the Light-

house is not about buying a business, but buying a Constance Bay institution. He recalled many of the community meetings that were held there when he was on Constance Bay Action Team, the fundraisers such as the time his group raised $10,000 compared to the OPP’s $3,000 for a charity, and many more. “I was so overwhelmed with the people that came in,� he said. “I hope they continue with the commitment to the community because that’s what it is all about.

There are so many really great people in West Carleton who care about the community.�

El-Chantiry also expressed appreciation for the continuity he sees at the Lighthouse. He took a moment during the busy lunch hour to watch a child enjoy an ice cream. He remembers when the child’s father sat at the same table to enjoy a treat when he was little.

Then there are staff members like Allison Scheel who started when she was a teenager. “I remember when she was Miss Constance Bay. She was 16,� he said. “And now her 15-year-old son is working there.�

Then a pause: “I’m not comfortable talking about it.�

He wanted to thank, publicly, his long-time friends and employees Geannine Gaudett (who started in 1983 at his Ottawa restaurant) and cook Thia Tung. “Lots have come to work and forgot to leave,� ElChantiry said. “I take pride in all my staff, from the oldest ones to the youngest. I’m so glad the new owners decided to keep all the staff.�

Gaudett called El-Chantiry a fair boss who she could confide in. “He really listened when you had personal problems or whatever,� Gaudett said. “It won’t be the same without him. People came in just to see Eli. And it wasn’t just politics. If they had personal problems, they talked him. “He’s pretty choked up about it.�

Gaudett said El-Chantiry usually got the orders

right, and could make an over-medium as well as an over-easy.

But when conversations drew too much of his attention, as often happened, the results weren’t always stellar. “He got it right most of the time,� she said, laughing, “except when someone was talking to him. “And someone was always talking to him.�

El-Chantiry had a few simple words in closing. “Maha and I really want to say thank you to the community that has supported us.�

Three former schools remain for sale in West Carleton. But with each passing year, they fall further into disrepair, leaving neighbours to wonder about the negative impact on their property values.

Then there is the problem of a surplus of former schools in the area. A group of community organizations are considering a move to the former Torbolton school on Woodkilton Road. Little is being said about the former Fitzroy Centennial in nearby Kinburn.

“That building in Kinburn was in beautiful shape. It’s ludicrous how they trash these buildings,” Laframboise said.

He chalks it up to politicians who create legacy projects for themselves by building huge new schools

like Stonecrest in order to attach their names to the accomplishment. Yet, as in the case with some hospitals, there can be more bricks and mortar than staff and operational dollars to run the places, he said.

“They behave like Egyptians, these politicians,” he said.

Area Trustee Lynn Scott disagrees that the schools were in decent shape. The heating system at Fitzroy Centennial, for instance, needed to be replaced – during a time of declining enrollment. The provincial government wouldn’t have given money to build the mobiles at Stonecrest if it didn’t agree the other build-

ings were falling into disrepair, she added.

Scott said the school across from Laframboise’s home was designed as a oneroom schoolhouse. It was converted into three rooms, but with no gymnasium, proper kindergarten class and had a small yard.

“We expect more for our kids these days,” she said.

“The challenge is always making sure we can afford ongoing operating costs.”

Scott laments the opportunity missed to turn it into a public library, but says the board is ready to accept any reasonable offer.

“It’s a nice piece of property,” she said. “It would need a lot of work.”

“The kids used to walk by here yelling ‘Hello’ at me all the time,” Laframboise said.

“Now it’s empty.”

Empty and likely having a negative effect on Laframboise’s property value, a point he made in a letter to Ottawa-Carleton District School Board superintendent of facilities Michael Carson regarding the former Fitzroy Harbour Public School.

“Our neighbourhood has been to a certain extent ghettoized,” Laframboise said.

“And I think they should recognize that.”

Carson’s response letter was short and to the point. “(The school board) is not responsible for any devaluation that your property may have suffered,” Carson wrote, adding the board doesn’t intend to offer compensation. The board’s lawyers were cc’ed.

Schools compete for buyers in region

The fourth floor expansion at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC) got underway Monday.

The $3.6 million addition to the roof will allow downtown-based groups to deliver more health and social services for residents of western Ottawa, including Bells Corners, West Carleton and Stittsville. Most of the centre’s existing services will use a portion of the new 6,000 sq. foot of space, along with the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre, which will offer expanded services for children with physical disabilities, plus a new partnership with the Centretown Community Health Centre. It will open a diabetes clinic.

“The expansion is timely in terms of services it will provide,” communication officer Gail Smith said. “It means the centre will be able to meet the needs of the community, not that it was overcrowded before, but it will definitely help out with space.”

The cost will be split three ways between the centre, and federal and provincial governments. No services will halt because of the work, which is expected to be

completed by March 2011 before the stimulus funding ends, but many of the day programs are moved to neighbouring churches and other facilities.

Some of the programs WOCRC offers include: • Violence against women; • Chrysalis House emergency shelter; • Ontario Early Years Centres (Carleton); • Child Witness; • Confident Children’s; • Protecting Your Personal Information; • Counselling Services.

Smith welcomes residents to the annual general meeting at the Centrum Holiday Inn and Suites on Sept. 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The operating fund revenue, as of year-end March 31, totalled $6,363,587. Funding is from all three levels of government.

She also said the organization welcomes more volunteers.

“It’s good for people to know about the centre and come find out what’s going on,” Smith said.

The Queensway-Carleton Hospital (QCH) qualified to receive $1,055,400 in funding.

The Pay-for-Results program is an Ontario government initiative intended to reduce wait times in emergency rooms.

However, MPP Ottawa West-Nepean Bob Chiarelli said the wait times in question is not how long a patient is in the ER for, but how long the visit takes in total until the patient leaves, or is admitted.

“The program helps hospitals meet these specific ER wait time reduction targets,” Chiarelli said.

“In fact, if they fail to meet the targets then their funding for the next year is reduced. There’s real incentive for them to produce results.”

Champlain LHIN CEO Robert Cushman said the QCH is the busiest single campus in the network and have the busiest emergency room but it’s not the quality of care that had the hospital applying for the program.

A West Carleton teenager is among the first in Ontario to be charged under a new law that prohibits young drivers from consuming any amount of alcohol.

The 17-year-old from Kinburn crashed his vehicle into a tree on March Road near the Shell station at Highway 417 early Sunday morning.

The front passenger, a 16-year-old female from Toronto, was airlifted to hospital in critical condition after the 1:15 a.m. accident.

Her injuries were deemed serious at the time.

The backseat passenger, who lives on Bayview Drive, sustained minor injuries.

According to police, the accident occurred because the driver was enjoying a song at the time.

He told police that he began to swerve the 2000 grey Ford back and forth until he finally lost control and slammed into the tree.

He is charged with careless driving and with having a blood alcohol level above zero.

Starting last month, drivers under the age of 22 years old can’t have any alcohol in their system. Even a hint of booze could spell a fine and licence suspension.

The driver cannot be identified under the Young Offenders Act.

When friendship matters most

Hard to get message out to voters

T

are several terrific golf tournaments this summer in West Carleton. But one in particular this weekend has greatly moved us and all of those involved.

The Dunrobin Village Meats – Julie and Cindy Delahunt’s – seventh annual Golf Tournament is on Saturday at Irish Hills Golf Course. The format is a four-person scramble (best ball), with a shotgun start at noon.

Don’t trouble yourself to become one of the 144 participants; it sells out every year. This year in particular – the Delahunts are donating the proceeds to the Cameron Harvey Scholarship Fund.

“Every year we choose a local charity. This year it is the young boy killed on Kerwin Road,” Julie said. “It was an easy decision. The parents are in the community. The family is very supportive of this community, as well.”

On Oct. 21, 2009, at about 7:45 a.m., 18-year-old Dale Cameron Harvey lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree on the winding stretch of road, between Berry Side Road and Mowbray Street.

Hundreds of friends and family gathered days later at the Kinburn Community Centre to remember the popular student of West Carleton Secondary School.

At this year’s graduation, a $2,000 scholarship fund in his name was awarded for the first time. It goes to a graduate showing promise in the technology field, not just construction, which was a passion of his.

The Dunrobin Village Meats tournament will more than likely ensure the scholarship is handed out for many years to come. Golfers and the generous business that donate items to it result in a cheque being presented in the range of $5,000 to $8,000.

“Julie and Cindy are really, really good friends,” said Maureen, Cameron’s mother. “The appreciation for them to do this is huge. And the support from the Dunrobin community is ... well, there really isn’t words for it.”

It has been said that truth and tears clear the way for a lasting friendship. Friendships have taken a deeper and richer meaning in Dunrobin this year.

Runners Stay in the Bay for fundraiser despite pouring rain To the editor: I would love to be able to say that last Sunday’s inaugural Stay in the Bay 5K all-terrain run came off without a hitch. It was to have been a laid-back tour highlighting the unique combination of road, trail and beach that this community offers runners.

Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans, and the “storm of the decade” turned what should have been a leisurely morning jaunt into a truly “extreme” event.

ing up. Barrie and Laurie Ashworth made the trip from Armitage Avenue and topped the men’s and women’s classes finishing in 21:25 and 24:20 respectively. The rest of the field sloshed in behind them.

Notwithstanding the weather, most seemed to love the course and wanted to do it all over again on a day when they weren’t dodging puddles or lightning strikes.

A special note of thanks to the crew of volunteers who stood out there and got as wet as the runners.

I like to read, especially the National /Canadian Geographic and outdoor magazines. When I can, the newspapers get a read.

Walter Robinson wrote an article on Wednesday, Aug. 4 about campaigning for council positions. Being that I, James Parsons, am running for a seat on council in Ward 5 (West Carleton), it definitely was read.

This ward is huge. Knocking on doors is not practical, Internet at my house only available on dial up or satellite - too slow or too expensive.

Not having 14k and nobody contributing donations, I am hoping people read the free local papers and want a change in the council this fall.

The elections office in not putting out the phone list of the residents in each ward until Sept. 10 and, therefore, it seems the campaigning will only begin after the nominations close.

Looking forward to talking to the people at the debates on Sept 14.

Hopefully there will be a better turnout at the polls this October.

Remember folks, you have to live with the people you vote in for the next four years.

Candidates should agree: no signs To the editor: With the middle of August upon us, the city will soon be engulfed with a vibrant multi colour display lasting until the end of October. It isn’t the maples that I refer to but the upcoming display of election signs. As of Aug. 26, candidates will be allowed to display signs on private property and as of Sept. 25 they can be placed on public property.

Most if not all of the signs have some form of adverse environmental impact.

What are election signs? Fundamentally the signs are comprised of what holds the sign up, what presents the message and what the message is written with.

What holds the sign up is either a metal, plastic or wood support.

The media can be anything from plastic film, hard plastic, a milk carton type of material, other types of paper based stock on to wood or even metal. The message is printed with paint or inks primarily and these vary from toxic to

biodegradable in “greenness.” The signs are often attached to the supports with metal or plastic.

Election signs also are, at least in my opinion, environmentally unfriendly and in 2010, slightly outdated.

They obscure the beauty of the Ward, are a distraction for drivers, an easy target for idle hands and for what purpose?

In this day and age, with all of the other methods available to get a message out to voters such as TV, radio, the internet and print (you are reading this), why do we need to put signs up?

Mr. El-Chantiry has not engaged in the campaign as of yet but has been registered since the first week of June and does use this paper to get his council information distributed.

As it is well in advance of the sign display date and it seems that the West Carleton Review is a common venue which both Mr. Parsons and myself have had the privilege to have our letters to the editor be published, I

believe it is the single and best channel to issue the following position on 2010 municipal election signs: “I commit not to order, issue, authorize, install or display any ward 5 election sign with my name or campaign related information until and unless one of the other Ward 5 candidates does so for themselves. Once informed of this, I will confirm the fact myself and photograph myself with the front page of the Citizen that day. I will submit the photograph to the other candidates in the ward as well as the media on that day.”

After all this, if I decide to orders signs, I will display the dated order on my website. The most eco friendly signs can be done and installed in days if needed so I am not concerned about that issue.

The best thing for the environment is not to create the disposable material in the first place.

We ate dinner on the Galley patio in Portland that night, and watched as the big boats pulled into the marina, one by one. Some guy I will call Guido the pimp narrowly missed taking out one of the boathouse posts as he backed his cruiser into the parking spot, with the “help” of his equally inebriated idiot friend. Just as they settled themselves and quieted down, the boat carrying their female counterparts showed up. They were no less impaired, and the restaurant guests on the elevated patio held their collective breath as the boat glided into place directly beneath us.

Luckily, the revellers were sufficiently tired out from their day of partying and didn’t keep us up all night.

I slept like a rock on our boat.

The next day, we cruised up the opposite shore of the lake toward the Narrows locks. We

As we stepped up onto the dock, I noticed a leather-tanned, shirtless older man wearing well-worn shorts, boat shoes and a gold chain. “That’s what Dad would look like if he had lived another ten years,” I mused.

That was his perennial summer outfit. The man was just sitting and watching the boats, and talking to the lock staff as if he knew them well.

Just as the locks opened and the boaters readied themselves to leave, the tanned man

On the long weekend, the Farmer and I decided to escape the farm with the boat overnight. We were heading for the wide open water of the Big Rideau.

Mom offered us Dad’s old charts – the very charts that I bought him for his birthday back in the ‘80s. I carefully unfolded the weathered maps and watched as Mom pointed out various locations that I would remember.

“Here is where we rented that cottage when you were sixteen,” she said. “And here is a nice spot to stay overnight in your boat.”

Mom had written personal notes all over the map in her perfect script. And in the bottom right hand corner, Dad had written “Larry A. Leeson” in his familiar scrawl.

“Thanks, Mom,” I said, giving her a hug. I thought of how many times she must have pored over those maps with Dad in summers past.

The Farmer and I hit the road, our little 19-foot cutty trailering behind us. In a short time we were in the village of Portland, at the public ramp.

We launched the boat successfully and were booting along toward Rideau Ferry so I decided to make us each a sandwich. I put the maps down for a moment and started slicing kielbasa.

“Hey! What the…” the Farmer yelled, yanking on the throttle.

Suddenly we were coasting over a shoal, and the water was just three feet deep. I guess that’s what happens if you put the maps down for a minute and you aren’t familiar with the area.

“Oops, sorry. I wasn’t paying attention. So that’s what those white markers are. They sure aren’t very big, are they?”

Charity golf tournament teeing off for final time this weekend JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

A golf tournament that has raised more that $80,000 for charity is wrapping up with one last teeoff Saturday, Sept. 11.

The 4-Putters tournament, first organized by four Fitzroy golfing buddies in 1985, has been held on the second Saturday in September at the Madawaska Golf Club ever since. With only two of the four originators still available to organize the event, they have decided the 25th annual event will be the last.

Wayne Harris and Bert Reitsma are urging all those who have participated in the tournament over the years to come out one last time for a day of golfing fun and to support two good causes.

The pair hope to have Murray Bowes, who is ailing with kidney problems, back for the last tournament. However, the fourth Putter, Jim Dolan, died of cancer a couple of years ago.

Harris said the four friends used to head to the Madawaska Golf Course every Sunday at 7:30 a.m. during the season. One Sunday in 1985 they decided they should hold a charity event and the 4-Putters tournament was born.

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario has always been the tournament’s main charity, but each year the four also pick a secondary cause to support. Other beneficiaries of the tournament have included Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (twice), the Arnprior and West Car-

This year a donation will go to the Fitzroy Community Association, an organization that has been asked to take over the tournament.

Harris said the tournament’s first year was rather traumatic for the four because it poured rain. “Here we were with no rain date and the rain pouring down,” he said.

However, all but five of the 254 golfers showed up with raincoats, umbrellas and galoshes to brave the rain, he said.

“It shows there was a lot of community support (for the causes),” he added.

“We really lucked out.”

For most years since, the weather has been much kinder to the organizers.

Harris said many people deserve to be thanked for making the tournament such a success, including all those who played in it. He issued as special thank you to Madawaska Golf Club owner Rick Munro and his staff “for all the hospitality over the years.”

He also thanked the many businesses and individuals who donated the prizes, all the volunteers who helped them run the tournament, and the Fitzroy Community Association for providing the hall for the banquet.

and Bowes were replaced

by Ron Delahunt and Joe Larkin, also of Fitzroy, as main organizers. They only missed holding the tournament once, the year Dolan died.

Harris said the emphasis, as always, will be on enjoying the game and the course, as participants don’t have to be expert golfers. “We have a heckva lot of fun,” he said.

The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. As in the past, the golf will be followed by a banquet and awards at the Fitzroy Community Centre about 6:30 p.m.

Ride with Rendall seeks volunteers, participants for annual bike race in Dunrobin on Aug. 29 Special to WCR

The annual Ride with Rendall Crazy Train bike race will take place in Dunrobin Sunday, Aug 29.

Teams of two to four cyclists (or more in family category) compete to see who can complete the distance in the fastest possible time. A 21-kilometre loop course runs parallel to the Ottawa River (north of Kanata).

The course is run in a rural setting passing several farms and large estate homes. This is a course that will test a team’s ability to work together. Several rolling climbs and two relatively tight turns add to the techni-

cal challenge, while one long eastbound straight stretch adds to the team speed.

There is also a newly added family category to get ‘novice racers’ out on the road.

The organizers are requesting more local volunteers (and participants).

And, it would be great to tap into any students needing community hours of service.

Organizers are also looking for a community group to run a barbecue to raise funds for a local cause. If interested, contact Mike Nash at mike.nash@signiant.com.

Gather ’round the roaring fire at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site for tales of Ottawa’s past.

The Ottawa Storytellers will share local lore, myths and legends by the shore of the Ottawa River with visitors to the 88acre estate, as they enjoy snacks around the campfire.

The next Campfire and Storytelling is Saturday, Aug. 28 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Visitors are advised to bring bug spray, a blanket and lawn chairs.

The Dunrobin site is a perfect backdrop for the tales, since it has its own rich history, beginning in the 19th century when the original owner Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey first settled there.

Visitors can warm up to the folklore as they roast hot dogs and marshmallows before they settle down for an evening of enjoyment. And for some young story lovers, this may be the perfect opportunity to take part in such a rustic family activity for the first time.

“There’s been multiple times when I saw parents with their young children explaining how to roast marshmallows,”

said Ruthanne Edwards, a member of the Ottawa Storytellers. “They would say, ‘When I was your age, this is what we did on warm summer nights,’” said Edwards.

Although the fire will be glowing all night, some stories will still give you the chills.

“People always ask for ghost stories,” said Edwards, who’s been a storyteller for six years.

Whether she tells funny or scary ghost stories depends on the age group of the audience, she said.

Edwards said her stories are interactive, and involve lots of participation.

“The point is to have fun,” she said. “People seem to connect to this a lot better than traditional history.”

Ashley Moores, the museum’s education and interpretation officer, said that although storytelling is seen as an oldfashioned pastime, it has never gone out of fashion.

This is the second of three editions of Campfire and Storytelling at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site. Each month, the Ottawa Storytellers will drum up a new batch of stories to entertain their audiences.

Admission to Campfire and Storytelling is $6 per person, $10 per pair, or $15 per family.
