But all three have different ideas about the potential for public transit in the rural ward.

Incumbent councillor Eli El-Chantiry and challengers Alexander Aronec and James Parsons spoke Monday at the Corkery Community Centre, the final all-candidates debate before next Monday’s election.

If you were brushing your teeth, shaving, applying makeup or just drinking a cup of coffee while cruising down the road at a fair clip, then how much of your attention is focused on what is happening around you?

Definitely less than 100 per cent, that’s for sure, says Ottawa Police Service West Carleton Constable Peter Jeon after a recent incident on Highway 417.

Driving does require full attention and anything less can quickly put a driver into a hazardous situation, he says.

In addition to reminding motorists about the Ontario distracted driving law that prohibits drivers from using hand-held devices to talk, text and email, police strongly advise drivers not to use hand-held curling iron devices while driving.

In order to safely curl your hair and avoid getting burned, pull over to the side of the road and come to a full stop before texting, talking, emailing and curling on your hand-held devices.

At around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, a complainant called 911 after he observed a female driver weaving all over the highway as she attempted to curl her

hair with a hand-held (wireless) curling iron device.

Before police could stop the vehicle, the curler exited the Highway 417 and headed into Stittsville.

With a licence plate number in hand, OPS officers continue the search for the hair-curling, vehicle-weaving driver.

Tunnel, taxes divide West Carleton candidates The choices are becoming clearer in the council race in West Carleton-March.

The three candidates – Alexander Aronec, James Parsons and incumbent Eli El-Chantiry – failed to agree on many of the issues raised during a debate at the Oct. 13 March Rural Association meeting.

Although only a small portion of the ward is served by OC Transpo, the city’s transit plans were a contentious topic, in part because a proposed downtown rail tunnel comes with a hefty $2.1 -billion price tag.

Parsons proposed light rail from all corners of the city to downtown, but won’t back Ottawa’s Big Dig. “Light rail: yes. Tunnel: no,�

Parsons said. “One hundred per cent of the people in West Carleton get in their cars and drive if they want to go somewhere.

We can spend all this money and get nobody from West Carleton out of their car.�

A seemingly-innocuous question from a March Rural Association board member prompted a heated response from El-Chantiry. The candidates were asked where they live in the ward and if they attend the neighbourhood’s community association meetings.

Both Aronec and Parsons listed examples of their local involvement, but also said they do not regularly attend community association meetings.

SPORTS FEES One question from a resident asked for support for less expensive access to sports facilities.

Reduced fees struck a chord with Parsons. “We all pay to build (a new rink), then why do we charge a fee to use it?� Parsons asked.

El-Chantiry said council must try and strike a balance, and must also pay costs such as liability insurance. He criticized Parsons for being willing to cut fees. “My opponent wants a zero tax increase and then says we don’t want to pay user fees,� ElChantiry said. “I’m sorry, but that doesn’t add up.�

Parsons – who opposes a downtown transit tunnel and its estimated $2.1 billion price tag – said there’s an easy solution: “With no tunnel there lots of money available,� he said.

The candidates also fielded questions about paving the shoulders of rural roads, the possibility of contracting out road maintenance, and how much experience they have with municipal government.

The municipal election is Monday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The councillor predicted commuter rail through the ward will happen. “It’s just a matter of time,� he said. “You see this (existing rail) before you see light rail from downtown.�

Aronec said the ward doesn’t need bus service, but he does support lowering fees for ParaTranspo in the rural parts of the city to the rates paid in urban areas. He’d also like to see unused rails between Carp and downtown Ottawa put to good use for commuters.

Aronec also suggested a weekly shuttle bus run for seniors to shop in the city would be wellused. Parsons is taken by the possibilities of a covered monorail system, possibly located in the median of Highway 417. He said riders could use such a system to reach downtown Ottawa from the suburbs as well as other eastern Ontario towns.

El-Chantiry, who lives in Kanata, not in West Carleton-March, was put off by the question. He was able to list many organizations he joined while operating a business within West Carleton – the Lighthouse Restaurant in Constance Bay – but took affront at any inquiry into his home address.

After accusing his opponents of making his Kanata home an issue during the campaign, El-Chantiry said he is very involved in West Carleton. “It’s not about where you live,� he said, “but about what you do for your community.�

El-Chantiry challenged the congestion charge idea, suggesting that earlier in the campaign, Aronec supported a congestion charge for all drivers headed into Ottawa’s downtown. “We can no longer rest and reset,� El-Chantiry said, alluding to the present council’s cancellation of northsouth light rail plans.

El-Chantiry said charging a toll for driving downtown isn’t possible. “Everyone has the right to drive their car,� he said.

CPR training offered The Ottawa Paramedic Service is offering residents free CPR and Automated External Defibrillator training.

The four-hour class includes a short lecture on patient assessment, followed by group breakouts for clinical training. Participants who complete the course will receive valid CPR C ‘Basic Rescuer’ and AED certifications.

Topics to be covered include: scene management and patient assessment; adult, child and infant CPR; adult, child and infant choking; automated External Defibrillation (AED); and cardiovascular emergencies – heart attack and stroke.

Queensway Carleton begins final phase of expansion The Queensway Carleton Hospital is growing again.

Just weeks from its 36th anniversary, the hospital has officially announced the final phase of their expansion.

“In four short years we will be looking out that window and seeing a whole new building,” Andrew Falconer QCH chief of staff said. “In the past 36 years we have really grown from a community hospital to one that serves the whole region.”

The centrepiece of the hospital’s plan includes a new four-storey building that will add 13,006 square metres.

Another 6,503 square metres will be

renovated.

In the future, another two floors — including one that could accommodate an extra 34 beds — could be added to the new building.

“Ottawa’s west end is one of the fastest growing communities in the country,” Ottawa-West Nepean MPP Bob Chiarelli said.

The expansion will mean a 40 per cent increase in the number of operating rooms, bringing the number from seven to 10. It will also add 15 kidney dialysis stations, and a second MRI and CT scanner. Ambulatory care, diagnostic imaging, administration, laboratory and pharmacy services will also see upgrades.

The $126-million project is expected

to be completed by early 2014.

In addition to the new 18,580 square metres of space in the first two phases of the expansion, a number of the Queensway Carleton programs have now partnered with other hospitals in the region to expand and increase access.

Seemingly always under construction, the hospital has already opened the doors to the new $96-million Irving Greenberg Cancer Centre earlier this year.

“I know when we did the first part of the expansion staff were just delighted,” June Lemmex, past chair of the QCH Foundation said. “They told me, ‘now we are able to provide the kind of care we want to’.”

Water report to be unveiled at Carp meeting New report to protect local drinking water A new draft report that shows where local drinking water comes from and special areas where it needs protection will be the subject of an information meeting Tuesday, Oct. 26 in Carp.

Learn more and provide comments on the report at any one of four public meetings, including the first session at the Carp Fairgrounds. It will run from 4 to 8 p.m. with a presentation of the key findings at 6:30 p.m.

There will be follow-up meetings in Perth Oct. 28, Kemptville Nov.1 and Carleton Place Nov. 2.

The assessment report was prepared by the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee as a requirement under Ontario’s Clean Water Act. The committee is made up of 15 local people who represent municipalities, agriculture, industry, small business, environment, First Nations and the general public. They work closely with local municipalities to implement drinking water source protection at the local level.

Ontario’s Clean Water Act is part of the Ontario government’s commitment to implement the recommendations from the Walkerton drinking water tragedy.

KEY FINDINGS Key findings from this new report include: • There is enough water in the local region to supply water needs, including future growth projections. However, it is always important people never waste water because it is such a vital resource and we can face seasonal shortages in certain areas depending on weather conditions.

• There are key areas where municipalities draw water out of lakes, rivers or underground aquifers to test and treat for municipal drinking water. In these areas, we need to ensure we are not undertaking risky land use activities that could release bacteria or a chemical, because that could contaminate a source of municipal drinking water.

• It is known what types of land use activities could pose a contamination risk and about how many of them are currently taking place in local vulnerable drinking water areas. Policies will be drafted next year to reduce the level of risk posed by these land uses. Policies could include safeguards that minimize the potential of a contaminant being released or limitations on certain landuse activities.

FEEDBACK ENCOURAGED The committee invites the public to review the draft report and provide comments and feedback by Nov. 5.

Input will help shape the final report.

There will be two flu vaccine clinics in West Carleton in the last week of October.

Ottawa Public Health kicks off a series of 31 immunization clinics in West Carleton.

The first shipment of vaccine has arrived and the first flu shots will be given Tuesday, Oct. 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the West Carleton Community Complex, at the corner of Carp and Kinburn Side roads.

There will also be a flu shot clinic Saturday, Nov. 13 at All Saints High School in Kanata, also from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The West Carleton Family Health Team will host a Flu Shot Clinic and Health Fair in Carp Thursday, Oct. 28, The event will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Carp Agricultural Hall.

The clinic returns after a one-year hiatus in 2009 because of the H1N1 epidemic.

With many ‘flu bugs’ circulating, it is even more important this year, says the health team.

To mark the season, the exhibition hall will be decorated with a Halloween theme and staff will dress accordingly.

There will also be flu shots available at some work places as well as at doctor and health care practitioner offices.

Airport needs proper regulations

The power of a single vote

To the editor:

One ballot may not seem very powerful. It’s a small slip of paper, or in today’s tech-wise world, it’s not even that – just a mere click of the mouse.

But if everyone voted responsibly, our politicians would have no choice but to listen.

Everyone lives his or her life based on a a set of personal experiences and beliefs that can’t help but colour the way we view our world.

But personal bias can also tarnish our view.

It can strip away that most precious attribute of humanity – empathy.

The secret to creating strong government – whether federal, provincial or municipal – is to understand the simple concept of common good.

Life is not an individual endeavour. It is human nature to want, and to need, interaction with others.

When hard times befall us, we want the support of our community. We should be prepared to give the same.

But sometimes we get tainted by the politics of fear. Desperate politicians know it will have impact. It is in their best interest to prod us to operate on fear: fear of losing one’s job, home, loved ones, material possessions from guns to land, or freedom itself.

But the minute you fall for that manic message, that is when you have truly lost your freedom.

That is when you are controlled.

Voters can’t always be experts on broad provincial or federal matters.

But municipally, we, the citizens, are indeed the experts. We know the services we use and need.

But too often we’re just too darn lazy to vote.

It’s far easier to let the election slide by and then gripe afterwards. It clears us of blame because we simply aren’t accountable.

But don’t be fooled. You will pay. You will pay taxes. You will pay water bills. You will pay user fees. And you and your family will always hurt when the broader community hurts.

So care enough to care.

Care enough to vote.

Stop smoking in parks and on patios To the editor: The Canadian Cancer Society is calling on municipal election candidates in Ottawa to support a bylaw prohibiting smoking on restaurant patios and in parks and playgrounds.

I do not understand why “you don’t have an answer that will satisfy Prior or others holding the same opinion.’ (West Carleton Review, Oct. 14).

The answer is simply, give West Carleton the same zoning and bylaw protection that the citizens of Ottawa have beside the other airports. We are part of the City of Ottawa and should be given the same respect and security of bylaws as others in the city. If this is now a major airport facility, it should become a regulated one.

Does Mr. Phillips think that pilots and their families will want to buy lots and build luxury homes where they too will be bombarded by helicopters night and day.

Planes are not like helicopters and I have wintered near the world’s busiest private airport (Scottsdale), and so I know that no matter how busy it gets it is not something that that drives one crazy.

You barely notice the noise of the modern private jet. Swoosh and it is gone; the same for air traffic in the flight path of Ottawa airport.

One further matter. In all the conversations with Coun. Eli ElChantiry’s office that I have had and with all my calls to the airport office during and after hours (which are answered elsewhere), not one person has ever mentioned the construction of a new Helicopter Transport Services Facility.

The response has always been to get the number off the rear fuselage (at night?) so they can identify the craft and figure out where it has come from.

I welcome hi-tech industries to the neighbourhood and I think that every aspect of this development has positives for West Carleton, except for uncontrolled “hell e copters” and the increased risk of fire/chemical spills in an area without a major fire station, and very poor ambulance response times.

A perfect day to say goodbye to Larry After a few days of cold rain and harsh winds, we were blessed with warm sunshine and a cool breeze on Oct. 16, the day we chose to bury Dad’s ashes.

The sun shone through yellow leaves onto the black tombstone that Mom had so carefully chosen to mark Dad’s final resting place. It has been engraved with a waterside scene of two Adirondack chairs on a dock, with two loons floating near the shore. Dad was happiest near the water.

For the past two and a half years, Dad’s resting place has been various locations of prominence in the house where he spent the last 24 years of his life.

It became a bit of a game for me, every time I dropped in at the house on Beach Road, to find Dad. Mom liked to move him around once in a while and I couldn’t settle in until I found him. When I discovered the polished mahogany box I always put my hand on it and whispered, “There you are. I love you.”

Dad’s pancreatic cancer revealed itself as more than just a persistent back pain in August of 2007. By Sept. 11, despite surgery, it had spread and he was diagnosed terminal.

We lost him just four months later, on Jan. 14, 2008. Maybe we held onto his ashes for another two and a half years because we weren’t ready to say goodbye yet.

Dad was never much of a church-goer, but he had formed a friendship with Lynda at our farm wedding and during his illness. She knew the type of ceremony he would want: nothing too formal.

Anastasia read the lyrics from a country song, “I’m already there: take a look around, I’m the sunshine in your hair, I’m the shadow on the ground ...” and she almost got through it without crying.

Wish I could say the same for me.

Reverend Lynda helped me out by starting the reading on Death from The Prophet, but I barely made it through my four lines. The last two, “... when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance,” were delivered in a falsetto, I’m afraid. Those words are so perfect for Dad, who loved so much to dance.

Milena read an email in which she detailed a dream she had about her grandfather. A few of us have had really vivid dreams about him, and they have been similar in

their tone and very, very comforting.

After the urn was placed into the ground, we each took turns putting a rose on the grave.

I touched the velvet bag holding Dad’s remains one last time, and allowed myself one more good cry.

I’m sure he would prefer we suck it up, but I’ve never been one to hold back emotions. Must be the Black Irish in me.

Anyway, no need to hire professional wailers at our funeral (as is the custom in Asia). We do our own wailing here, thank you.

After the ceremony, Mom explained that when she told Dad she had chosen a spot for them to be buried together in Oxford Mills, his reply was, “Oh. I thought you were going to keep me.”

Well, I guess she did both. She couldn’t keep him forever – what if something happened to the ashes? His remains are in a much safer place now, and we all have a place to visit.

I live right around the corner from Dad’s resting place, and although I’m sure I’ll check on it every once in a while, I don’t imagine I will feel closest to Dad there. I feel his presence when I am enjoying the breeze coming off the water, or admiring the fresh beauty of the first snowfall.

I can almost hear him when I’m facing a personal challenge or even when something strikes me as incredibly funny. He has instilled in me a love of nature, a sense of humour, a belief in myself and, hopefully, strength of character.

Thanks, Dad, for everything. You will always be remembered.

In total, patrol officers in the West Carleton area responded to 66 general calls for service from the public for the reporting period of Oct. 8-14.

In addition to the calls for service, patrol officers are also proactively enforced Highway Traffic laws, responded to false 9-1-1 and alarm calls, and assisted the Ottawa fire, paramedics and bylaw services.

Tansley Drive, Carp Business District: Unidentified culprits broke into a commercial van sometime after 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, by forcing the lock to a rear passenger door and stole about $5,000 worth of machinery and tools. The theft was discovered at 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14.

In addition, the culprits attempted to pry open a mechanics box, which was attached to a second vehicle, but failed and caused $3,000 in damage.

Lane Street in Constance Bay Oct. 8: A complainant called police to report a suspicious looking male sitting about 20 feet offshore in a boat, possible casing his house. The male had reportedly been observed on several different occasions during the day and night.

Upon speaking with the boater, police learned he had lost his house to foreclosure about a year ago and was now living on a boat in the Constance Bay area.

Armitage Avenue, West Carleton Oct. 8: Homeowners from around the Armitage Avenue and Farm Lane area have reported incidents of young people hanging out and building fires along the access lane to the water. The latest suspicious call was received Friday at around 2:30 p.m. after a complainant observed an unidentified vehicle parked on the access lane near the water.

Ottawa Police found a suspected impaired driver wasn’t impaired by alcohol or drugs.

But her driving was impaired, nevertheless.

At around 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, a complainant called 911 to report a suspected impaired driver.

The 911-caller explained that the vehicle she was following along Dunrobin Road was weaving back and forth from the pavement to the gravel shoulder. Before losing her cell phone connection with the operator, the caller was able to pass on the vehicle’s last known direction of travel and license plate number. After a short search, patrol units located and stopped the suspect vehicle as it was heading eastbound along Highway 417.

On speaking with the driver, it was discovered her ability to drive wasn’t impaired by alcohol or drugs, but by a cellular phone.

As a reminder to all drivers, Ontario’s distracted driving law prohibits drivers to talk, text type, dial or email using handheld devices. Calls to 911 are an exception.

It is also illegal for drivers to use electronic devices such as a laptop or a portable DVD player while driving. Since coming into effect Feb. 1, there has been a marked decline in the number of drivers using hand-held devices in Ottawa. With fines ranging from $60 to $500, the new law seems to be having a positive impact on many drivers.

However, as this call demonstrates, there are still drivers out there who are still unaware of the distracted driving law or choose to ignore it.

Gee Side Road at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 for a report of a single motor vehicle crash.

The driver told the officer that about 10 hours before, while driving along McGee Side Road, a deer came out of the woods and forced him to swerve into the ditch.

When asked why he didn’t call police right away, the driver just shrugged his shoulders.

Unable to detect any trace of alcohol on his breath and in his car, the officer turned to the driver and told him that even though there wasn’t any evidence to support an impaired driving change, it was highly suspected that alcohol played a role in his accident.

It was at this point that the driver broke down and admitted to the officer that he had consumed alcohol and that he made up the whole deer story to cover his tracks.

The CD is accompanied by an 84-page book, The Canadian Infantry Soldier in Korea, and contains a photo of the battlefield, along with profiles of soldiers and vignettes from the front. The book details the average soldier’s daily life in frontline trenches.

Korea was the last war in which singing was a major part of a soldier’s existence. The book and CD combine to give an inside look into that existence.

A series of three concerts over the next two weeks and an accompanying CD will highlight the songs sung by Canadian soldiers in Korea.

Veterans Publications of Kemptville, with the support of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Korea Veterans Association, will stage the shows in Kemptville, Perth and Kanata.

Some of the songs are from the First World War, others from the Second World War, but many are Korean War vintage and have never been published or sung to a Canadian public before.

As much as possible the historical authenticity and original songs have been preserved, along with the robustness of soldiers singing around a fire or in a tent.

Most of the songs beckon the listener to sing along.

The three concerts are scheduled for the Kemptville Legion, Oct. 24, Perth Legion Oct. 31 and Kanata Legion Nov. 6.

The songs are sung by serving soldiers and veterans backed by professional musicians who have volunteered their services.

Find hidden treasures at Fall Give Away Weekend The City of Ottawa has declared this Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 23-24) Fall Give Away Weekend.

The annual put-items-out-at-the-curb event coincides with the end of Waste Reduction Week. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. So don’t put your unwanted bounty pieces in the garbage, says a city news release.

“Set them out at the curb on Give Away Weekend. For you treasure hunters, tour your neighbourhood, community and city to find those hidden gems.”

Treasures could include: • books, CDs and DVDs; • old furniture and small appliances; • construction materials - including drywall and hardware such as nails, bolts and screws; • kitchen gadgets, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans; • unwanted gifts and more.

Please consider safety when deciding which items to set out to the curb, urges the City. The Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health Canada advises that used children’s items such as baby walkers, yo-yo balls, cribs, car seats, strollers, playpens, bath seats, mattresses, blinds, toys and other child-related items should not be placed out at the curb.

Rules for setting out the treasures: • place items at the curb; • place stickers or signs on items with the word ‘free’; • ensure any items that you want to keep are away from your setout treasures are tucked away safely in your garage;

• at the end of the day, bring any uncollected gems back to your home.

Treasure hunting etiquette: • respect other people's property, don't walk on people's lawns and gardens; • take only the treasures marked free at the curb; • don’t discard previously picked-up treasures on another person’s lawn.

“We wish you best of luck in finding those treasures. It’s another way to rethink garbage, protecting our most precious treasure - our environment.”

Unfound treasures can be donated to charitable organizations, advises the city.

Besides Give Away Weekend, city initiatives to maximize landfill space include the Take it Back! Program and oneday household hazardous waste depots, including one this Sunday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Tunney’s Pasture. There was also a depot at Waste Management on Carp Road last Saturday.

Anyone wishing for a week-long party this Halloween season should come to Pinhey’s Point Historic Site to celebrate with the museum’s resident ghosts and goblins.

The heritage museum located in Dunrobin will be extending the celebration of All Hallows Eve this year with games, ghouls and tales that will make your hair stand on end.

This Saturday, Oct. 23, brave visitors can enter the Pinhey’s home in search of spirits during the museum’s Ghost Hunt.

Built in the 1820s, the Horaceville estate has been occupying the rolling hills along the Ottawa River for almost two centuries, and has been home to many generations of the Pinhey family.

Barbershop chorus looks for new members The Valley Harmonizers Senior Barbershop Chorus, centered in Renfrew, is looking forward to a busy year singing those ‘old songs’.

Their 18 current members come from as far away as Deep River and West Carleton, Calabogie and Ladysmith, Quebec.

They are looking for other senior men who would like to sing with them.

How to Drive in Dangerous Conditions (MC) - Individuals who live in areas of the country where the temperature and weather changes throughout the seasons have to adapt their driving to meet the road conditions. Weather-related accidents are some of the most prevalent but can be largely prevented if the proper driving techniques are followed.

Some of the more dangerous driving conditions include heavy rain that causes hydroplaning, driving on ice and driving in heavy snow.

HYDROPLANING Hydroplaning occurs when water on the roadway accumulates in front of a vehicle’s tires faster than the weight of the vehicle can push it out of the way. The water pressure can push the vehicle up on a thin layer of water, essentially breaking the tires’ contact with the road. In a matter of seconds, a driver can lose control and end up swerving out of his or her lane.

It is important to follow a few guidelines to prevent hydroplaning. First, keep tires well maintained. Wornout tread can contribute to hydroplaning, as can inadequately inflated tires. Certain tread patterns are more capable of diverting water away from the tires.

Ask a professional about which tire tread to choose.

Next, realize that the higher the speed, the higher the propensity to hydroplane. At lower speeds, it is generally rare to hydroplane, unless the water puddles driven through are exceptionally deep. Reduce speeds when it is raining.

Also, lighter vehicles are more prone to hydroplaning.

Again, if driving a compact or lightweight vehicle, slow down when water is on the road.

Should hydroplaning occur, let off the gas and do not apply the brake or turn the wheels. Once the car slows down and retains traction once more, steer and brake accordingly.

Individuals who want even more protection should consider switching to snow tires for the winter. These tires are made from a softer rubber so they can better grip the road. They may also feature a different tire tread for even more traction. Snow chains can be used to offer greater grip. However, speeds will have to be greatly reduced when chains are in place.

Reducing speed is helpful when driving in an inclement condition, including on ice. It helps a driver to better correct a situation and react. If skidding is experienced, gently steer in the direction of the skid without applying the brakes. When traction is resumed, slow down and correct the car.

ICE

HEAVY SNOW

Ice is a problem that plagues drivers when the temperature drops. While some ice can be detected on the roadway, thin sheets of ice blend in with the asphalt and are known as “black ice.” Black ice can be undetectable until a car begins to skid.

Many people have trouble driving on icy roads. In fact, winter conditions often lead to accidents.

It is important to make some modifications to a vehicle if driving on ice will be commonplace this season. At the least, proper tire inflation is important to maintain traction. Tires should also be checked for tread, as bald tires will do little to grip the road.

Driving in snow is different from driving on ice, but they share some similarities. Snow can be melting and freezing on roads simultaneously, depending on whether salt and sand have been applied by road service personnel. Therefore skidding from hydroplaning and ice may occur.

Another hazard from snow is reduced visibility. Driving under blizzard conditions is very dangerous. Wind and snow can cause white-out situations, essentially wiping out any visibility. In these instances, a driver should pull over to a safe area and wait out the storm.

This can prove dangerous if the car stalls in the middle of a road where visibility is poor.

The best advice for driving in snow is to assess the situation. If it is falling heavily, it can be safer to stay home. If a person must drive, reduce speed and leave a very large buffer zone between the vehicles to allow for emergency stopping. When approaching intersections or stop signs, begin braking early to prevent skidding through. Also, be extremely cautious of other vehicles, as they may be experiencing trouble stopping as well.

Snow, sleet and ice can make for difficult driving, even for experienced people behind the wheel. For example, from 2004-06, the Ohio State Highway Patrol recorded 105 fatalities on snowy or icy Ohio roads and there were nearly 15,000 injury accidents. As we prepare to once again enter the season of tricky road conditions, it may pay for drivers of all ages to undergo a refresher course in safe winter driving techniques. * Before you leave the building, check the latest weather report. It will help you anticipate any approaching storms and plan accordingly. Keep the radio tuned to a traffic and weather station to keep abreast of any changing situations, accidents or weather warnings. * Prepare your vehicle by stocking it with winter survival necessities. Winter weather can often mean breakdowns. Getting caught on the side of the road for a few hours can be treacherous in subzero weather. Make sure that you have certain supplies in your trunk for such emergencies. Stock up on road flares, a warm blanket, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, bottled water, extra windshield washer fluid, sand or cat litter (this can be used to provide traction if your wheels are slipping trying to get in and out of a parking spot or ditch), a first aid kit, and a cell phone. * Try to keep a full tank of gas during cold weather so that the fuel lines won’t freeze.

Snowy road conditions can make for treacherous driving conditions.

Use caution and common sense when traveling the roads this winter. * Winter driving requires different tactics. One of the best tips is to slow down. Also leave much more space between your vehicle and others on the road; winter road conditions often require longer stopping times. Start braking very early on as you approach any intersections to compensate for skidding. Avoid abrupt actions while operating the vehicle. Sudden stopping, steering or accelerating can cause you to lose control of the car. * Many people purchase SUVs because they think that 4-wheel-drive vehicles will enable them to drive in snowy conditions without making any changes to their driving behavior. This is not the case. It’s important to note that SUVs do not provide invincibility in winter conditions. They may offer a bit more traction on snowy roads, but all bets are off for any vehicle when there is ice underfoot.

Every driver should be cautious and slow down. * Impaired visibility from slush and salt being

kicked up on the windshield can make driving dangerous. Keep windshield washer reservoirs topped off. Also, it may pay to purchase windshield wipers that are geared toward the winter and can clear snow and ice more easily. * Pay attention and don’t take your eyes off of the road. Look further ahead in traffic so that you’ll be able to determine conditions and anticipate what moves you’ll have to make based on the behaviors of drivers up ahead. Staying alive in a winter accident could require split-second decisions. * Remember that trucks are heavier than cars and will require even more time for stopping. Don’t cut off a truck -- or any vehicle -- in snowy conditions. * Use your brakes correctly. If you have anti-lock brakes, you should simply apply slow, steady pressure. Pumping the brakes is only for older vehicles without ABS systems.

So many good trail choices Hiking in the national capital region and beyond, with author Michael Haynes STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

“I’ve hiked all over North America.”

The words come from Michael Haynes, a former marathon runner who now prefers to hike, and has done so for years while crafting a few books bent on getting hikers out and about.

The author of Hiking Trails of Cape Breton, Trails of Halifax Regional Municipality, and Hiking Trails of Nova Scotia, also spent time in Newfoundland last year helping establish a bicycle-route plan for the city of Corner Brook.

And he has worked for numerous national and regional trail organizations, such as Go for Green, the Nova Scotia Trails Federation, and is the director of TransActive Solutions, a company dedicated to improving walkability and bikeability in Canadian communities.

The Ottawa-based author is not a stay-at-home kind of guy.

Nor is he trying to be, by hiking here, there and practically everywhere, trying to define everyone’s hiking utopia.

His latest book, released this month by Goose Lane Editions, is Hiking Trails of Ottawa: The National Capital Region and Beyond, isn’t supposed to be the region’s walking bible.

“It attempts to be representative.

“This isn’t a book for experienced outdoor people, but for people not that experienced,” says Haynes of the 292-page book, whose five- by seven-inch format features numerous maps and colour photographs of paths, wildlife and vistas in western Quebec and eastern Ontario.

With a scale of one to five, he ranks the difficulty of each of 50 trails.

There are 10 in each of the chapters − Ottawa and the Greenbelt; Gatineau Park; beyond Gatineau Park in western Quebec; beyond the Greenbelt in eastern On-

tario; and the Frontenac Arch of eastern Ontario.

All are located within about 100 kilometres of Ottawa.

Whatever the trail selected, Haynes says his fervent hope is readers are encouraged to “get out hiking and walking. We live in a society where the average North American walks 400 metres a day.

“It’s very sad. More than 57 per cent of adult people get less than five minutes of exercise each day.

“Essentially, they are sedentary.”

And there’s little excuse to be like that, insists Haynes.

“One of the great advantages of living in Canada is we have so much of the natural world “We’re blessed and spoiled, and don’t realize how spoiled we are.”

GPS COORDINATES For all trails, he provides GPS coordinates to trailheads and the cellular phone coverage gaps on each trail.

His Trails at a Glance section highlights each route’s length, suggested completion time, permitted uses, entry fee (if any), degree of difficulty, and whether or not pets are permitted.

Haynes is particularly impressed by Manitou Mountain, a trail that opened near Calabogie Peaks Resort in June 2009.

“It’s a lovely trail, it’s an advanced trail,” says Haynes, confessing he dropped another trail from his list to include this one.

“I like Manitou Mountain very much. I give it a very high recommendation.”

“This is most definitely not a hike for beginners,” he writes.

His 5 out of 5 rating includes reference to navigation and steep climbs.

“Signage is minimal, the cleared treadway is sometimes virtually indistinguishable from the surrounding forest, and you are far from easy assistance. Map and compass are essential for this route.”

The starting point is Barrett Chute Road, as he takes the reader along the 11.5-kilometre route with cautions, criticisms and compliments.

the trees. Turn left and follow this more distinguishable route as it works its way along the slope of the mountain …

After 500 m/yd you reach the Manitou Mountain Lookout, perched high above Manitou Lake, overlooking the lower ridge line opposite.

“This is a wonderful view, with almost no evidence of human habitation to be seen.

“You might notice a painted zigzag pattern on a rock at ground level, or a small First Nation’s totem hanging on a branch.”

Haynes’ cautionary notes come after each trail description. In the case of Manitou Mountain, they are listed as animals, cliffs and poison ivy.

K&P TRAIL Haynes, who ranks Calabogie’s K&P Trail 3 out of 5 in difficulty, walks 13 kilometres, but notes the trail is longer

(if continued farther north to Renfrew).

As with his other trail descriptions, he offers plenty of details.

For example, just over five kilometres into the walk, near Appel Lane, he notes the cultivated fields and first presence of houses near the trail.

“As with all the road crossings, there are metal gates and numerous regulatory and informational signs, usually for snowmobiles.

“Now the terrain becomes much gentler, fewer softwoods, no more wetlands, and nearly level … There is even a cluster of abandoned farm buildings … At this point several buildings, including some attractive old brick farmhouses, dot the far edge of the fields.

“The K&P noticeably descends, dropping until it reaches an intersection with the Ashdad Road at 6.5 km (4.l m.) beside several homes.”

The region’s third trail to be included in Haynes’ book is Cycloparc PPJ, which receives a 5 of 5 for distance. It’s a 92kilometre trail, but he actually takes the hiker out 13 kilometres, before returning on the same route.

He notes facilities include benches, garbage cans, interpretive panels, outhouses and picnic tables.

He identifies it as a 92km trail located entirely within the Pontiac County, with a starting point at Wyman, Que., near Alumette Island.

“This former rail bed,” he writes, “is raised and dry, and usually tree lined.

Markers at each kilometre indicate your progress along a trail that is as straight as the railway could make it over the low, level ground.

A woman who grew up in the Pakenham area is making a big splash in the world of quilts.

Sue Bradley Carmichael has been chosen to have her Uxbridge Ontario Quilt Shop featured in the Better Homes and Gardens ‘Quilt Sampler’ magazine. Her store is one of 11 shops from across U.S. and Canada to be featured.

The daughter of Carol and Delmar Bradley attended Kinburn Centennial School, then Arnprior District High School in the late 1970s. She was active in the 4-H movement.

Carmichael is a well-known designer and the owner of Quilters Cupboard, a warm and welcoming quilt shop in Uxbridge, Ontario. It fosters both traditional and modern quilting projects.

Quilt Sampler, published twice a year, has been profiling North America’s top quilt shops for the past 13 years. Carmichael is very proud to have her shop chosen for a multi-page feature in the fall 2010 issue.

The article includes a photograph of the original quilt designed for the magazine with the full-sized pattern for Autumn Nights. The original Autumn Nights quilt is on display at Carmicheal’s store.

Two days earlier I had watched a pair of beautiful Black-throated Blue Warblers devour Gray Dogwood berries at Batawa, just north of Napanee. And a few weeks prior to that I observed three Red-eyed Vireos plucking Virginia Creeper berries on Amherst Island near Kingston.

These three species are known for gleaning insects from under leaves and twigs. Obviously at some times of year, perhaps most importantly fall migration, fruit provides them with essential carbohydrates.

and the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists, based in Almonte, are home to kindred spirits.

Today as the club prepares for its Fall Banquet Nov. 6, it has about 250 members up and down the Valley from Petawawa all the way to Ottawa.

They have been showing up to hear presentations by experts in wildlife and all aspects of the natural world and saddle up for field trips to get close to everything from mushrooms to dragonflies to birds to the geology underneath it all.

A Young Macs program has been launched for children hankering for nature in a world of video games and computer screens, and a website, www. mfnc.ca was launched.

The club has grown so much that it recently had to change its meeting place from the Arnprior Public Library to Arnprior District High School.

It was a tough decision, coming as it did after years of support and help from library staff hard pressed to find more and more extra chairs for the club’s monthly meetings and worried about the hazards of overcrowding. The club decided on a fall banquet to mark these successes.

It’s open to the public as well as club members and takes place at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre Saturday, Nov. 6.

Folksinger and environmentalist Terry Tufts will entertain before dinner, and Runtz has planned a talk called “The Bear Who Ate Me Almost,” and other misadventures in the wild.

MFNC to hold fall banquet It’s beginning to look like Ottawa Valley residents were ripe for a boost in their knowledge and enjoyment of the natural world – the evidence is in the recent surge of activity in the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club based in Arnprior.

When Ontario’s Trillium Foundation granted $41,800 to the club for public outreach back in 2005, it had seen a membership decline to somewhere around 80 paid-up registrants, with few young people among them.

At that point the club used the Trillium money to establish a youth program and attract more residents of the Ottawa Valley, a natural world bonanza, according to one of the club founders, and current club president Michael Runtz.

“Thousands of species of plants and animals – some transient but many resident – enrich the Ottawa Valley, making it one of the best regions in Ontario for natural history,” Runtz says.

He explains that this biodiversity in our backyard rests on a rich mix of habitats.

Water is a strong presence in the Valley, forests still cover much of the region – hardwoods on rolling hills and farm woodlots, spruces and firs mingle with birches and poplars on the Canadian Shield, and cedars dot limestone flats.

The Valley is also part of a migratory path for birds. In the right season shorebirds swarm muddy shores and waterfowl spill out from local wetlands as flocks of songbirds move to distant destinations.

Runtz is quick to point out that the Macnamara club is not alone in enjoying this bounty – other local groups such as the Pembroke Area Field Naturalists

What’s up (animal) doc?

The more we study animals, the more we know about what is good for them. The better we are to our animals, the better they are for us.

These are the messages of Ottawa’s second annual Mini-Veterinary School at Algonquin College beginning Oct. 22 and running for five Friday evenings. At a cost of $100 for adults (with senior and student discounts available), Mini-Veterinary School 2010 is for all ages, says organizer Dr Michelle Lem. There’s a lot to know about pets from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail and during this five-week program everyone can feel like a veterinarian – albeit a mini-one every Friday evening.

Leading veterinarian professionals will lead participants through lectures on the food that should be fed dogs and cats and how to care for an animal’s teeth. Learn about worms and germs that make owners and pets ill and how to get them back on their paws again through physical rehabilitation.

There is plenty for large animal lovers to learn, including what it is like to horse around for a living as an equine veterinarian and how to improve the welfare of food-producing animals like dairy cows.

Participants will also learn about the ever-expanding field of veterinary medicine and its specialties with a talk given by an animal cancer surgeon, as well as the laws that protect animal welfare.

Animal therapy for humans is touching to all and participants will learn about horses that enhance the lives of people with disabilities.

But the firefighters need help to set up and run the popular attraction.

Fire Station 84 will hold its annual Halloween Haunted House Sunday, Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Treats will be given to visiting ghosts, goblins, witches, vampires and Harry Potters.

Volunteers are needed to help set up on Saturday, Oct. 30, as well as during the event Sunday, Oct. 31.

Volunteers should be at least 12 years old.

Students can put volunteer hours towards their high school requirements.

All work will be carried out at the fire station.

Herrick, a Grade 12 student at ADHS, is playing for the Ottawa Capitals.

She has been involved in basketball since she was a young girl, playing in many competitive leagues and travelling all over the province.

Fergy Neves, a coach of teen basketball for over 25 years, started an elite girls’ basketball league in Ontario to give female players a better chance at earning spots on university or college teams.

Neves created the league so the country’s basketball officials can get a look at the province’s best junior and senior girls, to help them chose a team for international and Olympic play.

The league is broken up into four sections, so teams have only a short drive to meet their opponents.

Most children and adults look forward to Halloween fun, costumes and trick-or-treating.

But this particular holiday can prove to be a stressful and potentially hazardous time for your beloved pets.

Here are some tips to keep your animals safe and sound during this Halloween season.

Loud noises can easily excite and frighten pets. Dogs in particular can often feel threatened by strangers appearing at the door in strange costumes.

If possible, keep your pets secured in a separate room in your house while young trick-or-treaters are ringing your doorbell.

If you decide to let your pets participate, keep a close eye on them so they don’t suddenly make a break for the open door and slip out into the great outdoors.

Don’t leave your pets outside on Halloween night. Cats especially should be kept indoors several days prior to and on the night of Halloween.

Pranksters can tease or hurt your pet and we’ve all heard the horror stories of cats being tortured by sadistic people on this particular night, especially black cats.

If dressing your pet up in costume, make sure it is lightweight and nonconstricting. It should be loose enough that an animal can easily get out of it.

There will be clinics at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior from 2 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays Nov. 9 and Nov. 23.

This week (Oct. 18 to 22) is National Infection Control Week. Arnprior District Memorial Hospital and the Grove work to keep the spread of infection to a minimum and promotes people doing the same at home.

The best way to protect yourself is by frequent hand washing, keeping immunization status up-to-date, covering coughs/sneezes with your sleeve and by staying home if you are sick, says a hospital news release.

“If you are out in a public place, a school, an area and even a hospital, use the hand sanitizers provided.

They do work.

At the Grove and ADHS, current infection control measures are based upon up-to-date best practices.

The practices include having all patients, staff and visitors self-screen upon entering the building. This means wearing a mask and using hand sanitizers if you are ill (cough, temperature or flu-like symptoms).

It’s the one that got away!

Every fisherman is well acquainted with ‘The One That Got Away’.

Well, this year after the 2010 Expressions of Art show, West Carleton Arts Society (WCAS) artist Catherine Gutsche knows exactly how the fishermen feels.

In advance of this year’s exhibition, a few of the artists volunteered to paint some Carp fish to embellish the signs directing visitors to their show on the Thanksgiving weekend. Each sandwich board got a colourful fish mounted to the top of the sign.

This year someone thought that they would help themselves to one of those one-of-a-kind handpainted fish.

Should any honest fishermen hook this fish while out fishing, the WCAS would enjoy having it back for next yea’s’ signs.

Note to the thief: you could have bought a better Carp at the show.
