Loss of highlands ‘devastating’ ‘Losing these woods is losing a part of this history:’ resident JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

The loss of the South March Highlands will mean more than losing a natural habitat for endangered species; more than the loss of trails to walk, run and bike on. For one family it will be a very personal loss if the developers go ahead and build the 3,200-home subdivision in the highlands, on the southern edge of West Carleton-March. The Gibbons’ son, Christopher, has autism. The family takes walks in the woods four to six times a week to help Christopher with his anxiety levels. “It has the pond, and streams, the water; it’s very calming for him, wrote Diana, his mother in an email. “It is for people who have autism. Autism can affect an individual’s nervous system, making them much more sensitive to day-today stimuli. “Chris’ nervous system is much more sensitive to stimuli than a neurotypical individual, said Diana. “The woods are a place he can go away from artificial lighting, technological auditory stimuli, and the confusing sounds of crowds. He is much calmer there, he unwinds, and it allows him to get the cardiovascular exercise that he requires. “This is something not only an individual who has autism benefits from, but all individuals; something in our fast-paced world that people do not do enough of. See ‘GREAT LOSS’ page 4

Carp Airport stages mock disaster NEVIL HUNT nevil.hunt@metroland.com

“Collision on the runway. It’s not what any airport controller wants to hear, but it’s the kind of real-life situation that requires preparation and practice, just in case. On the evening of Oct. 27, Carp Airport and Ottawa’s emergency services put their capabilities to the test with an airplane-car collision scenario on a pitch-black runway.

The night’s hard work was then reviewed with an eye to improving response to any real incident at the airport. In the scenario, a two-seat light plane carrying the pilot and a passenger hit a small car that had wandered onto one of the airport’s runways. The result: two people trapped in the crushed car, an injured pilot in the plane’s cockpit and the plane’s passenger ejected and unconscious. See ‘COLLISION’ page 10
