The local PC party executive is in panic mode, sending a letter to party faithful about a “hostile takeover� in the works by a former Ontario Landowners Association (OLA) president.

The letter extols the abilities of 33-year veteran Norm Sterling, MPP for Carleton-Mississippi Mills, and links challenger Jack MacLaren to another former OLA president, the far right-wing MPP Randy Hillier.

Penned by riding association president Steven Lewis, the letter doesn’t break the party’s constitution, but MacLaren said his supporters intend to replace the existing executive. He is upset over the delay of the riding’s 2009 annual general meeting, among other stonewalling tactics. The association has been forced by provincial officials to hold its annual meeting next week. “We are not surprised we’d run into mild resistance. They haven’t been following the rules and we have,� MacLaren said. “It’s not appropriate what they are doing, but it just shows they’ve erred in their judgment by calling me a friend of Randy’s. He is pretty well thought of.�

MacLaren said he has signed up 700 members to the party, which if true would virtually ensure he wins the nomination for next fall’s provincial election. Sterling is privy to the numbers and said MacLaren has about 350. Sterling won’t say how many he has signed.

MacLaren said the PC party must move further to the right to embrace small ‘c’ conservative principles in both the social and economic realms.

He compares the local move to supplant the riding’s old guard with the Tea Party’s attempt to move the U.S. Republican party further to the right and the Wild Rose party’s attempt to pull Alberta politics in the same direction. “All across the western world countries are willing stand up a little more,� MacLaren said.

The kids – Tyler Nicholson, Cameron and Curtis Duhn, Nolan Wilson, Cole Ross, and goaltenders Jaimey Fulford and Jon Tovell – were beaming amidst the bright lights and cheering fans.

As the provincial police search coordinator for the last eight years, Webster said he’s seen good and bad outcomes when someone goes missing.

He said the successes outweigh the searches that end with the discovery of a dead body.

Even if there is a fatality, the family affected gets closure, he said, and evidence of any foul play can be crucial.

Webster recounted one case where it took about 10 weeks to locate the body of a murdered female in a landfill.

“We helped get the guy who killed her,” he said, adding that evidence gathered with the body was key to a conviction. “That meant a lot to me.”

Webster said the three most common calls for search teams, in order, are: • someone lost who may have been drinking or taken a shortcut; • despondent people; • people with dementia.

“With a child or elderly person, you have to get going fast,” he said.

Webster said he has a personality that doesn’t get dragged down by bad news.

“I’m usually upbeat, highly motivated and I never give up,” he said. “There aren’t many jobs where you can say, ‘I saved as life today.’”

If you’re lost in the woods without a GPS, hope that the search team out looking for you has satellite navigation units.

A training scenario for a large search-and-rescue team took place in Fitzroy Harbour last Sunday, with searchers on the ground and a Canadian Armed Forces helicopter in the air.

On foot were 42 volunteers with Search & Rescue Global 1, a not-forprofit organization that provides ground search in eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Many are retired police or military, while others are just volunteers who like to help in emergencies. They come from the city and across the region, travelling at their own cost to train in semi-annual scenarios and take part in real searchand-rescue operations when someone is reported missing.

Global 1 training co-ordinator Jack Ricou said the scenario in Fitzroy Harbour involved two mentally-challenged people who went to Fitzroy Provincial Park for a picnic and got lost after dark.

Teams of searchers departed the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre’s command centre, clad in fluorescent vests that made them look like a mobile construction zone. The searchers also carried GPS units; not to prevent them from getting lost, but to provide a clear map of where they walked.

“That way the search managers can see everywhere we’ve searched,”

Ricou said. “And they can even see the gaps.”

Ricou said the public may have an inaccurate impression of how a search is conducted. TV police dramas may show officers walking shoulder to shoulder across a field as they search for someone. In reality, Ricou said such a grid search is a last resort.

“Today it’s quite scientific,” he said.

“We have lost person profiles, whether they are hunters, despondents, or young children four to five, or six to seven.

“All of them do different things (when they become lost).”

As an example, he said despondent people who are reported missing – who may be at risk of suicide – often travel to somewhere they remember. They may also be found on a hilltop, where they have a view of the surrounding area.

Ricou said profiling has improved international search efforts, and Canadian search teams deserve some of that credit. He said profiling has reduced search times considerably.

In the Fitzroy exercise, a Canadian Forces Griffon helicopter assisted with the search, clattering over the village and the provincial park for more than 20 minutes. Ricou said dogs could have been used too, but the purpose of the scenario was to get ground searchers practising their skills, so the dogs stayed behind.

After locating the two “lost” people, searchers exited the woods to retrieve stretchers, including one from a former ambulance located on Canon Smith Drive that is specially equipped as a mobile command post.

Ricou said Global 1 would be happy to return to Fitzroy for a training exercise in the future. He said the hospitality was great and the park is nicely contained for training. In addition, the proximity of the community centre,

TPR inks deal to acquire rail line CN and Transport Pontiac-Renfrew (TPR) have signed an Agreement-in-Principle to start the process enabling TPR to acquire a railway line known as the Beachburg Subdivision.

The line runs from Pembroke east through the Pontiac and into Ottawa by way of West Carleton.

“This initial agreement is a big step in the acquisition process,” says Transport Pontiac-Renfrew director Louise Donaldson. “Some specifics of the deal still need to be worked out, but the parties are eager to complete the transaction.”

Formed in 2009, Transport Pontiac-Renfrew is a not-for-profit corporation with a mission to acquire the line and develop and operate increasing levels of freight service.

Following launch of the freight operation, TPR plans to introduce commuter / passenger service along with possible tourist excursions.

The initiatives will help bolster the economies of local communities and improve the economic livelihood of their residents.

Those at the ceremony were still in shock by Daron’s death, including members of the Ottawa Senators. “It’s just the type of thing where you’re never going to get an explanation on,� team president Cyril Leeder said. “You can only try to do something positive with a difficult situation. I think the Richardsons have done what they can to make the best out of a bad, bad situation.�

Nicholson called the Richardsons’ handling of the circumstances “commendable.�

While suicide rates among the 15-to19 and 20-to-24 demographics have decreased from 2003 to 2007, rates among 10-to-14-year-olds have risen, Nicholson said. “The more we talk about mental health and mental health issues openly, and the more we acknowledge that they exist and affect us, the better we’re going to be at reducing the stigma surrounding them,� she said.

In memory of Daron, the Richardsons asked that donations be made to the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health – Youth Program.

Communications spokesperson Karen Monaghan could not release figures, but said “there has been a huge outpouring of support for the Richardson family.�

In the wake of a suicide death by Ottawa Senators assistant coach Luke Richardson’s 14-year-old daughter, medical experts are urging parents to monitor their children carefully in their teenage years.

Daron Richardson died on Nov. 13 after trying to take her own life the day before, the NHL team stated in a press release. She was pronounced dead at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

A Grade 9 student at Ashbury College, Daron was great athlete, talented artist and stage presenter, and beloved friend to many.

But even with all those positives, a child can still be depressed, said Annmarie Nicholson, director of applied suicide intervention skills training at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. “People can be very good at hiding what they don’t want you to see,� she said. “We become quite good masters of disguise at times.�

A lot of children can be.

Dr. Ian Manion, executive director of the provincial centre of excellence for child and youth mental health at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, said 17.3 per cent of the total deaths among young people nationally are by suicide. That number represents the second highest rate behind accidents.

Manion said part of the problem is that there is a strong negative stigma attached to feeling vulnerable and asking for help. The decision to stay silent causes a vicious cycle. “They stay stuck in that place longer and in pain longer and have few personal resources or coping skills to deal with it,� Manion said. “That is a very dangerous situation because then they can resort to more unhealthy ways of coping. “Sometimes a young person can find a permanent solution to what is a temporary problem. They don’t have the insight to see that things will be better

The drama club faced a major hurdle off the top in September. The staging had to be completely rebuilt.

But thanks to a donation of wood from DEKA Home Hardware, the answer was less about generating funds than it was sheer sweat and hard work. Donations also came from Darvesh Auto Repair in Kinburn, West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry and Music for Young Children’s Wendy Knapp.

LAURA MUELLER City council has tasked the new council with finding a plan to acquire of 29.5 hectares of land in the South March Highlands.

Councillors voted 13-8 in favour of pursuing a strategy to purchase the land or exchange it during a special council meeting on Nov. 22.

In the meantime, Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson was also successful in getting council to support her motion to swap four hectares (10 acres) of that land. (While she originally negotiated with the developer to swap just under five hectares, it was determined that part of that was road allowances the city already owns).

Recent public outcry over plans to development on the environmentally sensitive wetlands and forest prompted the councillor to look into ways to protect it, including the land swap.

“This is something you can do for the community right now,” Wilkinson told her fellow councillors.

“It’s a very important first step.”

Wilkinson said the developer, KNL, was “agreeable to this one particular part of the exchange,” alluding to the fact that the developer doesn’t want to part with any more land than that.

But it’s still not clear how much the city and residents would be paying. The city has already spent $16 million on land acquisitions at the site, both through purchases and land swaps.

Tickets are on sale for Stonecrest Public Elementary School’s massive Beauty and the Beast junior production.

Some 90 students and staff are participating in this year’s biannual musical, a long way up from when the theatre group started with just 25 students at the former Fitzroy Harbour public school.

Grade 7-8 teacher and director Craig Gibson has nurtured the group since its inception, and said the one-act Beauty and the Beast will be the biggest and best to date.

“We started auditions last April, so we’ll be well prepared. But we’re still panicking the closer it gets to opening night,” he said. “Everyone’s having lots of fun.”

Along with the fun are a number of life lessons students are drawing from the story. Both the beauty, Belle, and the Beast are outcasts. They suffer all the same anxieties and feelings of alienation some youths in intense social situations do.

However, participants in the play get to practice teamwork, learn empathy and hear anti-bullying messages.

“This gives kids who maybe have a tough time academically or at sports to shine and help promote school spirit,” Gibson said. “Some kids who don’t think they fit in get to hear about bullying issues and if – like Belle and the Beast – they are different, that it’s OK.”

“For the kids, it gives them an opportunity to skate on the same ice as their Ottawa Senator heroes.”

“I learned how to be a volunteer from Helen (Dean),” says Debbie Elliott.

So it was no surprise that Elliott volunteered to organize a benefit for the Dean family when a large silo collapsed on their Galetta farm Oct. 4, crushing one of their barns.

Elliott said the Deans, being the self-sufficient types, didn’t want a benefit. But when it was explained to them the community wanted to help in recognition of all the community endeavours the family has been involved in over the years, the party was on.

A large crowd of friends and neighbours, young and old, jammed into the Carp Agricultural Hall Saturday to enjoy each others company and raise money for a family much respected in the area.

Among the crowd were at least a dozen members of the Dean family, including Bill and Helen and their sons Dale and Glen, who now play principal roles in

running the farm.

It once again shows the community spirit in West Carleton, said West Carleton-March councillor, Eli El-Chantiry, who was on hand for the celebration.

“It’s a great turnout … we look after our own.”

Elliot was delighted by the response. A number of local musicians took turns on stage, about 100 silent auction items were donated and 4-H members donated proceeds from milk sales, she noted.

John O’Neill and Carson Hill were volunteer auctioneers and Local Traffic, Mike Ryan and number of other entertainments provided the music.

While purposely not even asking how much was raised, “I think it went very well,” Elliott said.

Editorial

Starting tough conversations with your children For a parent, having to bury a child is one of the worst things imaginable.

The reality that a father will not have the opportunity to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding or that a mother will not get to hold her first grandchild in her arms are moments that are instantly robbed from those left behind upon an offspring’s death.

That’s exactly what happened to Stephanie and Luke Richardson – Ottawa Senators assistant coach – when their 14-year-old daughter Daron died from complications from a suicide attempt on Nov. 13.

In what would normally be a very private and sombre time for most families, the Richardsons decided to go against the grain and grieve publicly.

They should be commended for doing so.

The Richardsons held a large memorial service at Scotiabank Place on Nov. 17 to remember their daughter’s life.

It was an event that drew people from Daron’s school, the hockey community and across the city, and exposed some of the private moments of the Richardson family.

But it’s not how they chose to say their final respects to their daughter that was so honourable. It was the message they were trying to relay; a message every teen should hear.

The Richardson attempted to squash the taboo that talking about suicide is wrong.

Issues concerning positive

mental health have long been pushed to the background in society – as the public’s yearning for physical wellbeing tends to be priority No. 1 – but with Daron’s death, Stephanie and Luke made sure that didn’t happen.

Coming weeks will certainly not be easy ones for Stephanie, Luke, and their eldest daughter Morgan.

Coming to grips with such a seemingly shocking event will never fully make sense, especially, as Ottawa Senators president Cyril Leeder said, an explanation is unlikely to ever come.

While it may be too late to help Daron, being able to discuss the topic openly might help save someone else in the future.

The 21st century, whether you like it or not Is the 21st century different from the 20th? Yup. Try this: the winner of the Giller Prize for literature is published by a small press that can only print a small number of copies. There is an immediate outcry, probably from people who only read books when they win prizes. Quick, they say, print more books.

After a few days of that, one of those know-it-all Toronto columnists pronounces: What’s all the fuss, she says. You can order it online for your Kindle.

Of course. And welcome to the 21st century. As in the previous century, new technology continues its onslaught on an innocent public. The technology is different: eBooks, iPhones, Facebook, Twitter, iPads, Blu-ray, GPS. But the message is the same: Buy or be hopelessly out of date.

As in the previous century – wasn’t life so much sweeter then? – most of us ask the question: Do I need this?

For some it is not a problem. They are early-adopters, gadget freaks and they buy and try anything that is new, standing in line for it before the sun is up. For others, it is a problem of different sort. They have

The rest of us dither, waiting for a push. In the early ’80s, the kids may have persuaded us that we needed a VCR. Then the technology did its own pushing.

Videotapes were no longer available at the video store, blank tape was hard to find, new VCRs even harder.

So it was on to the DVD player. And now, should it be Blu-ray or not? Soon the decision will be made for us, as the nonBlu-ray technology, whatever you call it, dies off.

None of this was clear to us when we made that first investment in a VCR. Nor was it clear to people who invested in cable that some day they would need to invest in still newer equipment and extra

charges to watch the sports they wanted, the games being moved further and further up the digital dial by canny cable operators.

The same thing happened with the switch from LPs to CDs. Die-hard traditionalists swore that they’d never desert vinyl, until vinyl deserted them. They couldn’t buy records, so the CD player entered the house in the late ’80s. Now the CD player is gathering dust, replaced by digital recordings downloaded from the Internet.

Downloading from the Internet is something many people swore they’d never do, and are being forced to as more and more CD outlets disappear.

An interesting thing is that we are irritated by all this, but not made sad.

There may be sentimental value attached to books and, for people of a certain age, LPs, but no one feels sentimental about CDs or DVDs. This makes it easier for us to get rid of them as we enter new technologies, thereby feeding the technological beast.

Which continues to bully us. A mid-’80s home computer, still functioning perfectly, has to be replaced in the early ’90s be-

cause it can no longer communicate with newer computers.

Meanwhile, we have to make our decisions. Is the printed book really obsolete?

Can we find our way without a GPS in the car? Must we Twitter? Do we need Facebook?

And always the key question: Do I need this?

We’ve seen in recent weeks some of horrible things that can happen on Facebook. We’ve read the stories about people who drove into a swamp because the GPS told them to. And we’ve read Twitter accounts that make the Twitterers look like twits. Do we need it?

Do we get a choice?

Dog should have been accepted To the editor: I am appalled by the refusal of the Arnprior Humane Society to accept the dog, Jake, after he was found wandering.

Perhaps, he was not quite within their boundaries, but he was certainly a long way from Ottawa.

This is the problem with humane societies – often their staff and sometimes their boards of directors are not what they should be. It is not always easy to get the calibre of staff you would prefer nor the directors on your board you would wish. Also, everyone becomes overworked and

tired and makes mistakes.

Nevertheless, I think not admitting Jake was disgraceful. All found animals should be admitted to humane shelters.

Jake should have been taken in – his telephone number would have then been noted and he would have been all that more quickly reunited with his owners.

On the subject of boards of directors, I sat on the board of a nearby animal welfare society a few years ago. It was a bad board with many members having ulterior motives other than the welfare of the

animals.

Arnprior needs to take a close look at its policies and re-train its staff.

Also, a word of advice for Mr. and Mrs. Martin.

From their letter, I suspect that Jake was neither licensed nor microchipped – the Arnprior Humane Society holds a microchip clinic annually. Had he been, Arnprior or Ottawa could have identified him far more quickly.

In closing – welcome home, Jake. I’m so glad you are safe.

A controversial OttawaCarleton District School Board survey looking for information on students’ sexual orientation, religion and family background has been delayed due to a complaint to the Ontario Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.

The survey, which has received mixed reviews from parents, aims to find out important demographic information about students to better target school programs.

“The bottom line is we want to be better able to meet the needs of our kids,” said director of education for the OCDSB, Barrie Hammond.

at Merivale High School and a parent of three, had criticized the survey in an earlier interview with Ottawa This Week-Nepean Edition, saying that schools should know their students.

“We (the staff) know the kids, they could have asked us,” she said.

Hammond said what while the board has a general knowledge of the city’s demographics, information about languages spoken at home and ethnic origins can help educators tailor their lessons.

The board announced the postponement on Nov. 17. It was due to start on Nov. 22. Hammond said that he was confident that the commissioner would find the plans to be sufficient to protect the students’ identity – but the board will follow any recommendations that may be in the final report.

Hammond said that he did find people tended to focus on “one of the questions” when there are over 40. “We really think this

is necessary and we have worked hard for the last year to develop the questions,” he said.

The survey is part of the board’s plan for equity and diversity and follows the lead of the Toronto District Board of Education. The Toronto board says 92 per cent of its students and parents filled it out, with few complaints.

The board promises to keep results confidential, but each survey is numbered, and the number can identify the students’ names. Hammond said the board’s own teachers and other staff will not have access to this identification.

“We have been working with in-house legal and the example of the Toronto board,” he said. “I think we have done the best we can.”

There would be one questionnaire for parents of children up to Grade 6, and a different set to be answered by the students themselves from Grade 7 and older.

But there is hope for one day eliminating such discomfort. By using the body’s natural openings to access tumours or damaged organs, some surgeons can successfully operate through the mouths, noses, ears (and other openings perhaps too awkward to mention) of patients.

The Ottawa Hospital recently recruited just such a physician.

He was cool. He got good grades. He excelled at every sport. He was close friends with my secret “crush”.

He intimidated me in every way, and I got to know him only from a distance.

Until, one day, I learned that he would be away for a while because he had a mass growing in his brain.

I was terrified – if it could happen to him, it could happen to me. Thankfully, after not too long, he came back. The growth had been benign.

Dr. Amin Kassam, a neurosurgeon trained at the University of Toronto and the University of Ottawa, is a pioneer of the Expanded Endonasal Approach (EEA), which uses nostrils as portals to access tumors in the brain and skull base, rather than a surgical opening at the top of the skull.

When we finally spoke, he told me his fear of having a malignant tumour, and how painful it would have been to be operated on through an opening in his skull. The thought made me wince.

While there is nothing routine about EEA surgery – or other techniques that use natural openings as portals to the rest of the body – the new approach begs an important question: how did God, or nature, actually intend for our ears, noses and mouths to be used?

It’s a technique still used for some forms of surgery.

Other procedures, just as scary and invasive, permeate hospitals around the world. Pain is still part and parcel of medical treatment.

Intruder given Snowball’s chance to flee home Ottawa Police Service

BREAK-IN Would you find it unsettling to think that some stranger was sneaking around inside of your home while you slept?

A key component to a good night’s sleep is security. It is something we usually practice unconsciously, to varying degrees, but only become aware of its presence, again, when something jolts us from our comfort zone. Question, who locks their vehicles in the city but leaves it unlocked at home (rural homes that is)?

Entering the Oak Creek house through an unlocked garage door, at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, the unidentified culprit made his way into the garage.

After stealing some change and a Garmin GPS unit from inside of the two vehicles the culprit quietly made his way into the house through an unlocked inner garage door.

Quickly making his way around the house the culprit grabbed several sets of keys that hung near the doorway, a Dell laptop that sat on a living room coffee table, a digital camera, and $200 in cash.

Unbeknownst to the intruder was a dog named Snowball.

Probably alerted to the faint and unusual sounds coming from darkness, the

dog started barking out a warning and chased after the intruder as he fled from the house.

Even though police reports did not indicate the size of the Snowball, there is no doubt that the dog had the heart of a lion that night and a keen sense of security.

WHAT A VIEW Homeowners on Barlow Crescent called 911 at around 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, after a small float plane crashed in the Ottawa River.

One caller stated that he could see the pilot and hear him yelling for help. Another looked on through binoculars and provided the dispatcher with updates of the incident.

Working in unison with Gatineau PD, Ottawa emergency services descended into the area and executed a rescue.

By 4:17 p.m. fire rescue boats were in the water and pulling the occupants of the downed aircraft to safety.

BIG BANG THEORY A homeowner on Bayview Drive expressed his frustrations with an ongoing

mischief problem around the bay.

He theorized that the mischief is the fall-out from the ongoing bush parties that occur in behind the Community Center on Len Purcell.

At around 4:30 a.m. on Sat., Nov. 13, the complainant recalls hearing a big bang; sounding something like a gunshot, but didn’t consider investigating the noise or calling the police.

When he went out later that morning he discovered that someone had trespassed onto his property and destroyed his mailbox.

Rather than theorizing the big bang, how about calling police right away and letting them figure out the cause of the noise.

Better still, switch on a light, as if you were going to the kitchen or bathroom for a midnight run, and then call police.

OH DEER Deer collisions are on the rise again, but only in West Carleton district. This week, drivers in the West Carleton area reported six deer related collisions while Rideau-Goulbourn went deer accident free. So, the total score for the past month now stands at 20 to 12 in favor of RideauGoulbourn.

Keep in mind that we are in pursuit of a collision free deer-year—continue on steering clear of the deer by: slowing down on rural roads and setting your headlights to high beam.

Take extra care on roads that cross creeks, rivers, wooded areas, or run alongside of open fields; and avoid driving at dusk and dawn when possible.

If you see an animal on the road honk your horn a few times and use four-way flashers headlights to warn other drivers.

4-H is alive and well in West Carleton.

The local club is one of the bigger ones around and going strong, says leader Bruce Hudson.

The Kinburn Community Centre was certainly full of proud family and friends for the West Carleton 4-H awards banquet Nov. 19.

Ward 5 Ottawa Coun.

Eli El-Chantiry and representatives from the club’s partners and sponsors were among the evening’s special guests.

Representatives from 4H’s various clubs presented their annual reports before the awards presentation got underway.

New this year was the small engines club and it proved to be a successful endeavour, said member Shane Carroll, who delivered the club’s report.

Glenn Byrne was on hand to present the club with $600 raised at the sixth annual Carp Show and Shine. The donation was an expression of thanks for 4-H club members who volunteered at the event.

Coun.

El-Chantiry praised the club for its ongoing success and said the City of Ottawa will continue to support 4-H. “It’s a small investment but a big result at the end of the day,” he said.

“They’re good kids and they’re doing a good job.”

Club representatives thanked all community partners.

An historic Kinburn home was approved for an addition and other alterations at a recent City of Ottawa committee meeting.

West Carleton-March Coun. Eli ElChantiry and his colleagues on the agriculture and rural affairs committee accepted a staff report detailing changes to The Savery House, at 3856 Loggers Way. The house, protected under the Ontario Heritage Act, is one of the earliest farmhouses in the village, built about 1833.

A typical one-storey addition, likely for a kitchen, was added sometime in the 19th century. The house is associat-

ed with Captain John Fraser, a veteran of the War of 1812 and a local Member of Parliament.

The main alteration is an addition located perpendicular to the rear of the house. It will consist of a music room, workshop, master bedroom suite and a garage at the rear.

According to the staff report, architect Richard White of Arnprior went to great lengths to preserve the integrity of the building.

“The architect has made significant efforts to minimize the impact of the addition on the Savery House,” reads the report. “Overall, the addition will be sympathetic, subordinate and distinPhoto courtesy of City of Ottawa guishable from the original building.”

Mischief Nov. 14 Opeongo Road, West Carleton: A complainant called police to report a mischief to property that occurred sometime between Sun. Nov. 7 and 14.

The complainant stated that an unidentified vehicle drove into her sign post, Ottawa Citizen post box and plastic planter at a very low speed.

Suspicious Nov. 18 Jesse Street, Marathon Village: A complainant called the OPS Call Center to report an ongoing problem with teens or young adults driving into the park and hanging out; the latest incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Thurs., Nov. 18.

The complainant stated that the vehicles show up a couple of nights a week and she is unable to get a description of the vehicles and its occupants because of the distance.

Theft Nov. 12 200 block of Bayview Drive, Constance Bay: Sometime between Oct. and Nov. 5th, unidentified thieves entered into a shed located at the complainant’s cottage and stole a variety of electric tools.

Nov. 16 Oak Creek Road, West Carleton: Two unlocked vehicles that were left parked in a complainant’s laneway were rummaged through sometime between 6 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 15 and 6 a.m. on Tue., Nov. 16.

The unidentified culprits stole a Blackberry cell phone and a wallet containing personal identification and credit cards.

The complainant also mentioned that her neighbour’s vehicle was entered into some at around 3 a.m.—when the family’s dogs started barking.

Nov. 16 R i v e r w o o d Drive, Woodlawn: At around 3 a.m. on Tue., Nov. 16, an unidentified person rifled through a complainant’s two unlocked vehicles and stole a lady’s necklace.

The complainant believes that the subject was scared off when her husband awoke and switched on a washroom light.

The necklace was later lrecovered at the end of the complainant’s driveway.

Nov. 18 Jiulia Lake Private, West Carleton: Unidentified persons broke into a locked shipping container by cutting off the padlock and stole approx. $5000 worth of construction tools.

The theft occurred sometime between 5 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 29 and 7 a.m. on Mon., Nov. 1 at a residential construction site.

Traffic Complaint Nov. 14 2800 Dunrobin Road, Dunrobin Village: A passerby called 911 at around 3 p.m. on Sunday after eight scooter riding youths, 12-13 yrs-of-age, started tossing cans and other things onto the road.

The caller noted that the kids were placing the objects on the road to get the passing vehicles to run over them.

Police located the youths and spoke to their parents about the incident.

(NC)—It’s at this time of year, we often ponder what to give a client, neighbour, teacher or friend. While gift ideas abound, Canadians are becoming more environmentally- conscious and socially responsible, so gifts of charity are becoming ever more popular.

But how does one choose which charities to support to illustrate the value of their generosity when bestowing a charitable gift? With more than 78,000 registered charities across Canada, choosing the one or two that best reflect your values, and one that uses donations to the greatest benefit of those it supports, can be a challenge.

In recent years, a variety of investigative journalism efforts have documented that some Canadian registered charities are paying a high price to third-party fundraisers. For others, it’s administrative costs that are eating into donations and taking away from the ability to enact meaningful benefits to those who are in need.

As a result, donors are becoming ever more diligent in deciding where to place their hardearned dollars.

Over the past few decades, many corporations have emerged with their own branded charities to illustrate their commitment to a better society. Often times these companies pick up the administrative costs associated with running the charities. In one such example, Royal LePage Canada, a Canadian real-estate company, established its own charitable foundation -- The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. It is the largest corporate foundation dedicated exclusively to supporting women’s shelters and preventing family violence through education.

New Hazeldean Road nears completion JOHN CURRY john.curry@metroland.com

Hazeldean Road reconstruction should be largely done by the second week of December.

Four lanes, two in each direction, from Carp Road east to the Kevin Haime driving range, should be completed and newly paved by that time.

The only part of the project which will remain unfinished will be the bridge over the Carp River.

A decision on whether to open up all of the lanes to traffic or not at that time will be made soon. The problem is that the two eastbound lanes will narrow down to one lane for the bypass around the bridge construction.

This may cause a traffic bottleneck and present some safety hazards.

Construction on the new bridge over the Carp River will continue through the winter if weather permits. It is projected that the paving of the traffic lanes on the bridge will happen next April or May. The reconstruction project from Terry Fox Drive west to Carp Road is costing $65 million, funded thanks to infrastructure

and economic stimulus programs from the federal and provincial governments, with the City of Ottawa also picking up its share.

It would, under normal circumstances, take a number of years to complete a project of this magnitude but it is being done in less than a year and a half due to deadlines associated with the funding.

BOULEVARD FEEL Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri told the Stittsville Village Association executive at its meeting on Nov. 11, that the newly reconstructed Hazeldean Road will not be a typical four lane road.

“It’s...to have a boulevard feel to it,” he said, pointing out that there will be public artwork on both sides of the road from Terry Fox Drive through to Stittsville Main Street.

He said that some of the commercial buildings – such as the new Bushtukah outdoor gear store that will be at the front of the Grant Crossing shopping area – will be close to the road and thus will contribute to a feeling of community rather than of a big box retail area.

The City of Ottawa’s Integrated Road Safety Program (IRSP), through its Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), issued 419 tickets to vehicle occupants for failing to use a seatbelt or ensure the use of required child car seats, and laid 147 charges for improper lane changing last month.

As part of the seatbelt/child car seat initiative, Ottawa Police and Ottawa Public

Health nurses conducted roadside spot-checks to ensure that vehicle occupant restraints were being used, child passengers were sitting in appropriate restraints and that child car seats were properly installed.

Of the 89 child passengers observed, 49 were using or sitting in the appropriate restraint for their height, weight and age.

Of the 37 child car seats checked, 16 ap-

peared to be properly installed.

Each month since 2004, STEP has been

profiling and enforcing two initiatives that target specific traffic safety priorities.

The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in Almonte is presenting A Tribute to Canada’s Military – Textiles and Artifacts from Members of the Ottawa Valley Guild of Stitchery through Dec. 18.

The museum invites the public to that exhibit, which opened Nov. 6.

It is a tribute to the men and women of the Canadian military in war and peace, with the focus on remembrance of the two world wars.

The textiles include the sampler on loan from the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada Heritage Collection, samplers and other stitching with a patriotic theme from members of the Ottawa Valley Guild of Stitchery, and other textiles, such as cigarette silks and other printed textiles included in tobacco products a time, all owned by the Ottawa Valley Guild of Stitchery members.

To provide context, there are also a number of other items owned by Guild members and their families such as artwork, military helmets, china, books, commemorative plates, photographs and much more.

The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs $5, free to children under 12.

Glenn Brooks raised a niggling issue at his final agricultural and rural affairs committee meeting which was held on Nov. 18 in Kinburn.

Brooks said a bylaw officer told a rural resident they cannot park their car on their lawn.

“This bylaw says I cannot park my own car under my own tree in the heat of summer,” he said, adding the bylaw shouldn’t apply

in the city’s rural areas, “especially outside the villages.”

The rest of the committee agreed to a motion to have city staff review the bylaw for city council’s consideration.

The committee is chaired

by Osgoode Coun. Doug Thompson, who before the meeting thanked Brooks and two other outgoing councillors – Gord Hunter and Rob Jellett – for their service.

“Glenn, you have been a tremendous advocate for rural residents,” Thompson said, “and I’ve enjoyed working with you for more than three decades.”

The Queensway Carleton Hospital is taking charge in the prevention of ventilator-acquired pneumonia (VAP).

As part of the Safer Healthcare Now initiative in 2007, staff at the hospital began to look at ways to control the pneumonia outbreaks in their intensive care unit.

The third part involves taking the patients off ventilation spontaneously to see if they can breathe on their own. Staff keeps the ventilator on with the settings off. If the experiment is successful then it expedites the process of getting people out of the hospital and into their homes.

Within the first six months the team had managed to reduce cases by 50 per cent and reach 95 per cent compliance with the bundle of actions required as part of the plan.

SAFETY CAMERAS According to the Ontario Road Safety annual report over 4,899 pedestrians were killed or hurt in collisions in 2007. That’s up slightly from 4,855 in 2006.

As in previous years, speed and aggressive driving were a factor in almost half of Ontario traffic fatalities in 2007. Over the last seven years, more than 2,500 peo-

ple have been killed in speed related collisions (from 2001 to 2007). (ORSAR) An October 2010 report on Quebec’s experience with safety cameras found the percentage of vehicles exceeding posted limits decreased by 63 per cent. (Montreal Gazette, Oct. 21, 2010.)
