In a divisive battle some compared to a rigged Latin American election, Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling saw his preferred slate of candidates elected to the local riding executive on Dec. 1.

Former Ontario Landowners Association president Jack MacLaren put forward 14 names for the riding association’s board, only to see Sterling’s slate of 14 names elected during the riding’s drawnout annual general meeting at Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Stittsville.

MacLaren is now preparing for the riding’s nomination meeting, expected in March or April. If MacLaren wins that vote, his name will be on the ballot as the PC party’s candidate in the provincial election next October.

Watson saves city $25,000 on first day (even the “opening of an envelope”), Watson said he takes pride in attending community events.

“Over the next four years, I will join you in your communities and church basements, at your farmers’ markets and fairs, doing the important job of going to where you are - and listening,” he said.

On a more serious note, Watson called himself a “lucky man” to be serving with a perfect mix of old and new councillors.

The council elected sends a message of what the people of Ottawa want, “and I get it,” Watson said.

He reiterated his campaign promise that openness and transparency will be priorities, and that his focus on thrift will not impact the city’s abil-

ity to provide services to residents, as illustrated by his commitment to not raise recreation facility fees in the new year.

Watson also highlighted his pledge to address homelessness, and properly prepare the city to celebrate Ottawa’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

and his supporters signed up as party members. He put the number of disputed members at 150.

Metroland Media spoke to multiple people who showed up to vote, only to find out their names weren’t on the list of eligible members. MacLaren said the disqualifications targeted only those people he or his supporters signed up as party members.

“The Progressive Conservative party thinks democracy isn’t important in this riding,” he said. “We didn’t even know the format of the meeting until we got here.

“We had to find out from (PC party headquarters) in Toronto when the meeting would be. They did everything they could to be unco-operative. It’s a God damn farce.”

Because the riding’s incumbent board members decided the meeting’s agenda, Sterling had a chance to speak to the roughly 700 party members before they voted. The riding association president, Steven Lewis, also spoke, thanking all the incumbents by name, while the challengers were not given a chance at the microphone.

When the voting process was explained, many people were confused and tried to yell out questions over the noise of those departing the auditorium to vote. Volunteers friendly to the incumbents handed out ballots bearing the names of the Sterling slate. Voters had to write in the names of the challengers or use a printed handout of the MacLaren slate as their ballot.

The MacLaren team’s printed handouts ended up being in short supply.

MacLaren said the uncertainty worked to Sterling’s advantage.

“I think a lot of people left (without voting) because they were confused by the ballot,” he said, adding that the important battle is still ahead. “We’re going to carry on, and we’ll be a little wiser. It’s interesting that (the incumbent board) got more votes than they have members.”

The riding executive didn’t release the exact vote count, but a number of scrutineers provided numbers that indicated Sterling’s preferred slate won by 356 to 203 votes.

Both camps will now have a few months to sell party memberships in an attempt to garner the majority of the votes at the

And while some people poke fun of his reputation for attending any event

Ottawa’s eyes could be bigger than its stomach From the bleachers, and the press box, it would appear to be an exciting time for sports in the nation’s capital.

Minto CEO Roger Greenberg announced on Nov. 30 that his Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) is likely to lock up a North American Soccer League Div. 2 team by the end of the calendar year for the 2013 season.

Ottawa’s latest Canadian Football League franchise – to be renamed Rough Riders if Greenberg has his way – is scheduled to attempt its third try that same year as well.

On top of that, the Toronto Blue Jays have even been rumoured to be bringing a minorleague affiliate team to town.

Throw in one-off events like the 2012 NHL All-Star Game and, to a lesser extent, the 2015 Canadian Little League Championships, and everything appears to be nice and rosy.

But has Ottawa bitten off more than it can chew?

Remember this is the same city that has already lost two CFL franchises – albeit more so for ownership reasons.

It is the same city that’s gone through three separate baseball franchises in as many years and doesn’t exactly pack Ottawa Stadium for games involving the Inter-County League’s Fat Cats.

But, most alarmingly, Ottawa is also the same city whose fans couldn’t sell out Scotiabank

Place for the return of Dany Heatley on Dec. 2. Sure those who did attend were a boisterous bunch, denouncing public enemy No. 1 every chance, but to have a reported 1,000 empty seats doesn’t exactly paint Ottawa as a strong sports town.

Undoubtedly, the price point for any new sporting business will cater more to families than those wearing suits and ties, but this is supposed to be Hockey Country.

And if your stomach is too full to enjoy bread and butter, dessert might not be the best option.

So while it certainly looks like Ottawa’s sporting scene is ballooning quickly, it could end up being just a lot of hot air.

A debate that keeps going around in circles The subject of roundabouts is moving up on the list of topics people in and around Ottawa like to fight about. Right now it trails the two leaders — lawn chairs at music festivals and pedestrians versus cyclists on bicycle paths. But, as a scan of the letters-to-the-editor pages shows, the roundabout is moving up and could soon hit the top.

The topic owes its current popularity to the introduction of a roundabout at St. Joseph and Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard in Orleans. Some are delighted by it.

Some are confused. Some may still be going around inside. All have an opinion.

As an example, check out the CBC and CTV news websites, where readers offer dozens of contradicting opinions.

Actually, the subject is not all that new. For years people have been offering their view that traffic congestion could be eased by replacing stop lights and four-way stops signs with the roundabout, which is said to work wonders in Europe.

Now these people have been joined by less enthusiastic citizens, who say that the roundabout system is too confusing to work here. Some have not driven the Orleans roundabout, some have.

To complicate matters still further, many have driven the Prince of Wales-

Only years of practice will determine whether the roundabout system will work here. Meanwhile, it is fun to ponder why we argue so hard about such matters.

My theory, which took a while to get to, is that Canadians are divided into two irreconcilable solitudes once again.

In this instance, the two solitudes are Euro Wannabes and North American Diehards.

The Wannabes want Canada to be more like Europe. Having people drive around in circles would be a step in that direction. Euro Wannabes also like the idea of having children drink wine at the age of 12. They can’t figure out why North Americans don’t vote for policies that work really well in Sweden. they can’t for the life of them figure out why soccer, which is such a beautiful game, has not displaced hockey and our version of football from the hearts of North Americans.

North American Diehards embrace the culture that has developed here — including baseball, drive-thru fast food, gigantic cars and loud music and eightlane intersections with turn arrows pointing in all directions. They complain about European countries having so many elections, although Diehards Canadians have stopped talking about that so much in recent years.

As you can see, there is a little bit of unreality in both positions. In a perfect world, North American cities would be full of pretty little squares, tiny cars and cute cafés where people actually sat down to drink coffee, rather than rushing along the street carrying it in a takeout cup. Mind you, in a perfect world, Europe would be a bit more welcoming to immigrants and have places to park.

Also comfortable chairs in restaurants.

Clearly it is not a perfect world. Still, the debate could be useful if people recognized that we are different and that elements of one culture don’t always transfer to another. Some North American free spirits think the permissive

drug policies of the Netherlands would be splendid here, but that will never happen. On a more basic level, the siesta is a wonderful feature of some European countries. But it will never happen here, and we know it.

As for baseball, a truly beautiful North American game, being adopted in Europe, forget it.

Now, it is not true that we, or they, are completely unable to change. Just think how little smoking there is now, compared with 30 years ago; think how many designated drivers there are now, compared with then.

This may give encouragement to those who think North Americans can learn to drive in circles. Belgians playing baseball might take a little longer.

Takeover would lose riding Directors don’t need re-training for Conservatives To the editor: The recent failed attempt by Jack MacLaren to take over sitting member Norm Sterling’s riding association is indicative of the mindset of those deeply involved in the landowners movement.

At a time when the potential to upset the Liberals in next year’s election is extremely viable, Hillier and people like MacLaren are prepared to sacrifice victory to push their own narrow-minded and antiquated view of what government should be.

MacLaren is on record as stating that he is “willing to fight for his culture and heritage and what his forefathers what for.”

At first reading you would have to wonder why this man would attempt to run, as his own words indicate that he is only interested in representing those who have his culture and his heritage.

What exactly these are, we don’t know, as he doesn’t explain, but it is obvious that his candidacy will not be one that will attempt to attract all.

Onus should be on pet owners To the editor: Re: Dog should have been accepted (West Carleton Review, Nov. 25).

I have volunteered with the Arnprior Humane Society for many years and a more dedicated, caring, effective board of directors and staff you could not find.

It is very misguided to think that all found animals should be admitted to humane societies.

The policies of the Arnprior shelter work well and the staff do not need re-training. As difficult as it is, some animals will be turned away, and that is unfortunate. but the onus should be on responsible ownership not on bashing the people who work so hard to look after those in their care.

I congratulate and thank the Arnprior Humane Society for their good work and hope they will continue for many years to come.

It will be interesting to see how this kind of narrow-minded far right ideology plays in the more suburban parts of the riding. In fact it will be interesting to see how it plays at all, as the demographics of Carleton-Mississippi Mills, have changed drastically over the years.

If it hadn’t, Jack MacLaren’s initial foray into far right wing politics with his separation movement, in the formation of the Carleton Landowners Association, would have been successful, instead of on life support.

Hopefully Norm Sterling will beat back the challenge of those who hide under the banner of the Progressive Conservatives, but are anything but.

However, if MacLaren wins the nomination next year, expect Carleton-Mississippi Mills to go Liberal, as it seems unfathomable that conservatives could vote for a man with such extreme views.

Certainly, there will be no votes for him from this household.

To the editor: Re: D should have been accepted (West Carleton Review, Nov. 25).

For the past 3 ½ years, I have been an agent investigator with the Ontario Society for the Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals, and work from the Arnprior Humane Society.

My territory covers from Arnprior to east of Renfrew, Calabogie, White Lake and in between.

I make myself available 24/7, 365 days a year, and I do this as a volunteer.

Our Arnprior Humane Society is mandated to accept dogs and cats from this huge territory, but also accept animals received by my cruelty investigations.

Our Humane Society was built 15 years ago, to house 50 cats and four dogs. This has now doubled.

It is because of the dedicated and committed board members and a staff of compassionate and dedicated women, that this territory has a no-kill shelter.

They rely on the generosity of our township and the amazing people who reside here to operate and continue.

To the editor: Santa cannot sit still any longer!

The workshop is brimming with activity, and letters from children throughout Ontario are starting to arrive at the North Pole post office.

Lucky for Santa, he can count on the volunteer help of the Canada Post elves who replied to about 461,000 letters in Ontario last year, thereby giving Santa a huge helping hand. Across the country, they replied to more than one million letters in more than 26 languages, including French, English, Japanese, Spanish and even Esperanto and Braille.

A wonderful partnership has developed between Santa and the Canada Post elves who have been delivering his mail directly to the North Pole for more than 29 years. The elves also help him reply to his mail, so the magic of Christmas lives on in the eyes and hearts of children.

Santa Claus reminds all his little friends to include their return address so he can send them a reply. At his age, it’s quite normal for his memory to play tricks on him sometimes.

Santa’s address is easy to remember: Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H, 0H0.

When it comes to animals, especially dogs and cats, our emotions tend to overtake at times. With ‘Jake’ the wandering dog, Ottawa Bylaw should have been the first call. It is their job to respond to wandering, loose pets.

They could have gotten the same number on Jake’s collar, and by being in their own territory, might have been united sooner.

Yes, Arnprior might have been closer and more convenient for the person. However, as was explained, they are double capacity now, from mostly preventable reasons (spay/neuter) in this territory.

My point is that the policies of the Arnprior Humane Society Board of directors has kept our shelter running successfully for many years, and that the only ‘re-training’ their staff might need is how not to internalize a few un-informed public.

Despite a promise by the McGuinty government to divert 60 per cent of waste from landfill, Ontario has a weak diversion record with more than three quarters of all waste ending up in landfills. The Auditor General, James McCarter, released a report which tells of failure to achieve goals and mismanagement of existing landfill sites.

The auditor’s report follows a report by Ontario’s Environmental Commissioner which stated that the Ontario government doesn’t even know for sure how much available landfill capacity it has

Record float turnout for Constance Bay parade A record 16 floats participated in the Constance Bay Santa Claus Parade last Saturday, according to organizer Ian Glen.

“This is the best we’ve ever had,” he said while directing drivers from both Constance Bay Road and Baillie Avenue.

Meanwhile, the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association (CBBCA) played Santa Claus to the West Carleton Food Bank, donating $2,000 and many cases of food to this vital community service.

Santa Day was planned as a food and fundraiser for the food bank from the start.

“But a surprise cheque for $1,000 from the West Carleton Wild Cats old-timers hockey association really put things over the top,” said CBBCA president Andy Rapoch. “Many thanks to the Wildcats.”

The CBBCA topped-up the proceeds from Breakfast with Santa and the post-parade warm-up party to match the Wildcat’s generosity. The Grinch who stole Christmas lights Weekly activity report for Nov. 26 to Dec. 2.

You’re a mean one Mr. Whomever you are. A complainant on Celtic Ridge Crescent, in South March, reported that unidentified persons stole her Christmas lights, which were strung with care in front of her house.

The theft occurred sometime between Nov. 27 and 28.

BAD VIBES A complainant called the OPS call center to offload the bad vibes he got from witnessing a road rage experience. He told the call-taker that while travelling along March Road he watched a driver of a black Pontiac Vibe struggle with a very adamant motorist who was trying his ‘darnedest’ to stop the Vibe from merging into his lane.

After managing to

squeeze himself in by forcing the motorist’s hand, the Vibe driver stopped his car right in the middle of traffic and confronted the “offending” motorist by blasting him with a few choice words and slamming his door shut. Storming back to his Vibe, the driver continued to vent his frustrations out into the world by disrupting the flow of traffic. After several tense moments, the Vibe driver sped off at a high rate of speed to chill out at home on Sixth Line Road.

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL An 18-year-old driver was suddenly jolted out of La La Land when his vehicle carved its way down the side of an oncoming motor vehicle as it was making its way down Carp Road. It was shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 when the northbound motor-

ist spotted the oncoming vehicle drifting into her lane and head straight for her car. Pulling onto the shoulder of the road in hopes of avoiding a headon collision, the motorist held her breath as the oncoming vehicle scraped its way down the side of her car.

Briefly speaking with the driver, the motorist did not detect any signs of impairment and was told by the driver that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

With safety and security of the accident scene under control, officers started the investigation process by asking the driver to explain what happened.

“I was guarding my lane,” the driver responded. Puzzled by the explanation the officer asked for clarification but only got an echoed response from the driver.

Quickly realizing that his tack wasn’t making

much headway, the officer opted for the factual approach by laying out his findings. Perhaps, in his alternate reality the driver really was guarding his lane. However, in the officer’s reality, the same one that nearly killed the passing motorist, the driver definitely wasn’t guarding his lane.

Realizing the truth of the matter, the driver admitted to the officer that he had fallen asleep after driving his girlfriend home and that he hadn’t been drinking.

After weighing all of the facts and evidence, the officer charged the young driver with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police track down pellet gunners Continued from page 11 Locating the youths, police found a sniper-type pellet gun concealed in the jacket of one boy and a bunch of pellets on the other. When asked to explain what they were up to the boys told the officers that they were new to the area and were playing in their backyard when they got lost in the woods. Satisfied with their explanation, the officers transported the boys’ home and provided them with an education session about the dangers of walking around with a concealed gun.

First up is seven-month-old Tia, who was found in August on the Macnamara nature trail in Arnprior. She was badly injured with a broken leg and tail. After much TLC she has now healed, been spayed and needs a loving home.

Tia has lots of personality - she is a sweet and affectionate little girl. She is a curious, playful and social kitten who loves everyone she meets.

Tia gets along great with other cats, including best friend Phoebe. She will need to be kept as an indoor only cat.

Phoebe was left in a box at the shelter door one morning in September. This best friend of Tia is an affectionate little girl who loves attention and is very outgoing. She is a quiet kitten who likes to play. Phoebe is gentle and she gets along well with other cats. Please consider giving this sweet kitten a home for Christmas.

Supplies the shelter needs are: non-clumping cat litter, liquid laundry soap, paper towels and bleach.

Kids in Fitzroy love their Wednesdays But school’s hot lunch program faces policy challenge NEVIL HUNT nevil.hunt@metroland.com

No one can be sure when, but someday soon, St. Michael School in Fitzroy Harbour will likely serve its 100,000th chicken finger.

For about 15 years, students at St. Michael have had the option of a hot lunch each Wednesday, thanks to parent volunteers. The meals – in rotation – include hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, pizza, and chicken fingers with a side of fries. The hot dogs are prepared in a kitchen at the school, while the other meals are picked up by hot lunch co-ordinator Jo-Ann Campbell.

“It started as hot dog

days,” said Campbell, who has two children at St. Michael. “We’re the hot lunch team and all the proceeds go to the school council to decide how it’s spent.”

The hot lunch money has helped the school afford art programs, a music program for primary grades, school sports uniforms and equipment, and a Smartboard.

“It’s been little things and big things,” Campbell said. “(The money) fills in the gaps.”

One of the more important projects has been the purchase of early literacy materials that have helped interest children in reading.

Helen Mandy started the hot lunch program, and Campbell has been coordinator for the last six years. There are three parents who help out.

“On hot dog day all four of us are in here,” Campbell said. “It takes a while to stuff all the dogs.”

The meals are popular with kids. Campbell esti-

Kanata Volunteer Fire Department takes on the Kanata Food Cupboard On Sunday November 28th Hazeldean Mall hosted a chili taste off event between the Kanata Food Cupboard and the Kanata Volunteer Fire Department. Layaway, a shopping tool popularized in years past, is now available again through many retailers. Shoppers who are making every cent count are turning to the pay-over-time method of purchase to avoid mounting debt after the holidays.

With layaway, shoppers can pay over time, interest-free and pick up their merchandise when it is paid off. For people looking to avoid a whopping credit card bill or those who simply do not have the cash up-front for holiday purchases, layaway can be the ideal holiday shopping method.

Although layaway is not available in every store, big-name retailers like Kmart, Sears and TJ Maxx do offer layaway in some locations. More than 1,000 retailers have teamed up with the Web site eLayaway.com to offer consumers an online layaway option hooked up to customers’ bank accounts. Once the item is paid for, it ships directly to the buyer’s home.

Layaway is a concept first started during the Great Depression. For decades customers relied on layaway to fund purchases they couldn’t make all at once. Although layaway was a standard in many stores for years, lack of interest in the financing option caused many retailers to give it up. However, thanks to the recession and high unemployment rates of recent years, many stores have reinstituted layaway based on customer request.

For those unfamiliar with layaway, here’s how it works.

- A shopper picks out merchandise from store shelves (or online).

- The layaway department adds up the total purchase and asks for a deposit on the merchandise and usually a nominal transaction fee.

- The store holds the merchandise in a special layaway area, marked with the purchaser’s information.

- The customer can return on his or her timetable to make payments toward the purchase total. Some stores may set a deadline for which the balance must be paid, such as December 23 for Christmas purchases.

- Once the merchandise is paid in full, the shopper is able to take it home.

- If the layaway order is cancelled or cannot be paid, the store may refund what has already been paid, charging a cancellation fee to restock the items.

Because there are no bills to pay after the holidays, layaway enables customers to enjoy Christmas without the stress of looming payments. Also, failure to pay the layaway purchase does not result in damage to one’s personal credit rating, another boon in an era of stricter banking regulations.

In mid-November, students and staff at All Saints Catholic High School lit the halls with the glow of pink.

Everyone wore pink and carried neon pencils to mark Bullying Awareness Week.

The idea came from two teenage students in the Maritimes who took a stand against bullies in their school. In the fall of 2007, it was reported that David Shepherd and Travis Price, after hearing that a student was called a homosexual and threatened for wearing pink, went to a nearby store and bought 50 pink shirts including tank tops, and were seen wearing them at school the next day.

They were able to spread the word about wearing pink in support of the student, and to take a stand against bullying. All Saints is also spreading the message.

School board tops up United Way The Ottawa Catholic School Board raised $555,505 for the United Way of Ottawa campaign this year, exceeding the board’s goal of $500,000.

Cassie Doyle, campaign chairwoman from the United Way Ottawa, was presented with the ceremonial cheque recently and congratulated the board for its superb achievement.

Doyle said that one of the goals of this year’s campaign was to ensure that every child in the city could arrive at school ready to learn.

Julian Hanlon, the board’s director of education, thanked the United Way steering committee and all the volunteer canvassers who contributed to the board’s campaign. This year, over 70 per cent of the board’s employees donated to the United Way. Many board employees give all or part of their donation to the Catholic Education Foundation of Ottawa. This year, of the total monies raised for the United Way, over $315,000 is directed to the foundation that uses the funds to help alleviate the effects of poverty in the board’s schools.

Much of the money contributed to the United Way Ottawa directly benefits young people in the community. The United Way helps fund the School Breakfast Program and Success by 6 – programs designed to support children so they arrive at school healthy, fed, and ready-to-learn. Also the United Way funds programs for youth facing addiction, mental illness and violence. Improved contributions by organizations like the Ottawa Catholic School Board means many similar programs can be enhanced to help more of the city’s citizens and children.

Baird said the extension would also mean the continuation of construction work, keeping people employed longer.

“Once these projects are done, we will be very close to the beginning of the start of the work for light rail in Ottawa,” he said.

Baird said he was really impressed with the way Ottawa stepped up to the plate.

“They really responded to the challenge,” he said.

While all three levels of government are pleased with the announcement, the fate of the projects was still undecided as late as late week, when federal Minister of Infrastructure Chuck Strahl announced that the deadline wouldn’t be extended.

Nearly a third of the projects under the nation-wide, $4billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund will not be wrapped up by the end of 2010.

“The dialogue really began in August, when Premier Dalton McGuinty attended a Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting in August,” Chiarelli said. “He said ‘We don’t want people to be driving through Ontario towns and seeing buildings with four walls and no roof ’.”

Chiarelli said the riding of Ottawa West-Nepean alone benefitted by more than 7,500 jobs alone thanks to the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

“That’s 7,500 breadwinners that wouldn’t have been able to bring home a pay cheque had we not had been able to work together on this,” he said. “It makes sense to see the projects to completion.”

An extension of the deadline for federally-funded infrastructure stimulus projects will save the city about $5 million, according to provincial Minister of Infrastructure Bob Chiarelli.

Eight million dollars is the total cost of the projects that aren’t yet completed, which includes the city’s portion. The total cost to Ottawa should the federal funding have been pulled would likely have been about $2.7 million.

The new deadline will give the projects another full construction season — to Oct. 1, 2011 — to complete the work.

There were 8,800 stimulus projects done in Ontario and Chiarelli said about 98.5 per cent of them would be completed under budget and on time.

“There are only about 166 projects in the whole province that won’t be completed on time and they have very good reasons, like soil conditions and the like,” he said.

In Ottawa, the Terry Fox and Hazeldean Road extensions will benefit from the new deadline, as well as the Wellspring Ottawa Cancer Survivorship Centre off of Alta Vista Drive.

“I know that for the Alta Vista project, they were talking about bringing in a tent and a heater for the ground so they could work through the winter, so now they have a little more breathing room,” John Baird, Leader of the of the Government in the House of Commons and MP for Ottawa West-Nepean, said.

Carp Road corridor gets its BIA Business Improvement Area allows firms to speak with one voice

“A big part of what a BIA does is go back and bring the voice of 250 businesses to city hall,” said Roddy Bolivar, a local consultant who has led the charge to form the BIA.

The BIA is not only interested in helping existing businesses, Bolivar said – it wants to have a dual focus and tackle opportunities to bring new businesses to vacant properties in the area.

It will also be important for the BIA to stress the importance of the light industry sector in Ottawa’s economy, Bolivar said.

Mistaken tree cutting riles greenspace advocates

Some mistaken tree-cutting turned a mundane city committee meeting into fertile ground for conspiracy theorists on Nov. 18 in Kinburn.

The city’s agricultural and rural affairs committee heard that crews working for R.W. Tomlinson Limited clear-cut trees from a city road allowance in Goulbourn, bordering Highway 7.

The company owned up to the error, informed the city of the cutting and then requested the city sell the unopened road allowance to the company, referred to as a part of Jinkinson Road.

An unopened road allowance is a corridor owned by the city that could one day be used for a road. In the case of the Jinkinson Road property, the land in question is 20 metres wide and will never be opened and put to use by the city because it dead-ends at Highway 7.

Vigil held in honour of abused, murdered women JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

Fifteen candles were lit at the Kanata Baptist Church on Monday, Dec. 6, while Christina Aguilera’s song Beautiful played through the silence.

Fourteen of the flames honoured the women killed in 1989 by Marc Lépine at École Polytechnique, the last represented all the nameless women who have suffered violence at the hands of others.

“We need to stand up and not let this happen anymore,” said Cathleen Lavoie from her wheelchair.

Lavoie was shot in the neck in 2008 by her boyfriend, Alvin Persaud, who she had broken up with earlier that same day.

“The doctors said I shouldn’t have lived,” she said.

“It’s a miracle.”

Lavoie and her boyfriend were together for five months, she said. During that time she saw warning signs but didn’t heed them.

“It’s not until he has a gun in his hand that you’ll know if he’s a psychopath.”

Her three children are still adjusting, she said. All three were home at the time of the shooting.

“He blames himself,” said Lavoie about her middle son.

Christian, who is now 15, let Persaud into the house.

“He didn’t know,” said Lavoie. “He asked (Persaud) what he had in his hand. He just answered, ‘Something for your mother.’ And it was.”

Christian, who was 13 at the time of the incident, helped save her life by alerting their neighbour.

During her recovery, Lavoie couldn’t speak or move. Today, she is only paralyzed from the waist down.

“I hope to walk again one day,” she told the crowd of around 50 people who came out for the vigil.

Lavoie said she is hoping to speak at schools, to tell her story and save others from having to experience what she did.

“I’m not worried about me,” she said. “I’m worried about the teenagers. Guys out there, it’s not cool to carry a gun. They hurt, they kill people. It doesn’t just hurt one person, it hurts the whole family.”

‘IT’S FOR THE NAMELESS ONES’ On Dec. 6 1989, Marc Lépine walked into engineering school École Polytechnique in Montreal.

He entered a classroom, separated the men from the women, then shot the females, claiming he was “fighting feminism.”

He shot 28 people, killing 14, before turning the gun on himself.

In 1991, parliament recognized the tragic event by declaring Dec. 6 the National Day of Mourning and a National Day to End Violence Against Women.

“It’s not just for them even though the day is for them,” said Phyl Powell, who lives in Stittsville and works with the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC). “It’s for the nameless ones.”

Powell said she goes into schools in the area and talks to students about healthy relationships and how to see the signs of unhealthy ones.

“We want to think everything’s OK,” she said. “If it’s not happening to me then it’s not going on.”

But violence against women isn’t going away, said Lynn Clouthier, who also works with the WOCRC. “You get to a certain age and realize some things will never change but it doesn’t mean you stop trying,” said the West Carleton resident. “(The vigil) it’s important to observe, it’s important to stop and remember and find the meaning in it.”

Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson spoke to the crowd gathered at the vigil.

“We need to not forget,” she said. “We need to remember, because violence has not gone away. We’ll come back each year just to refresh our minds and

remember.

“Our community really doesn’t need any violence.”

The WOCRC’s Terry Longhorn said violence against women is something we need to be aware of in our society.

“As long as the word gets out, if you get the message to even just one woman, it helps break that cycle,” she said.

One of Councillor Wilkinson’s stated goals, during her last campaign, was to see the completion of Kanata’s new Recreational Centre by 2012 (KanataRec 2012). The new facility is about to go under tender. One of the unusual features of the massive building is an eight lane swimming pool.

“The City has a policy to support the building of six lanes for our pools.” Wilkinson said. “We knew before we started building that six lanes would not accommodate our community’s needs.”

The Community Steering Committee, Chaired by Steve Hulaj presented a plan to add two extra lanes to the building. The City agreed as long as the community raised the extra 1.75 Million dollars the extra lanes will cost.

Terry Sheldon, Chair of the KanataRec 2012 Fund Raising Committee, is spearheading an ambitious, multi-staged campaign (see ad this page) to raise “those necessary bucks!”

“This is nothing if not a worthwhile cause,” Sheldon said. “Our burgeoning Kanata community has long outgrown its once generous recreational facilities. KanataRec 2012 is designed to meet community needs for today and well into the future.

“Community is key. The idea behind KanataRec 2012 is that it will be a facility created, in no small part, by the people and for the people.”

As Sheldon tells it, community involvement at every stage is key to the project’s success. “Steve Hulaj, a community pheom, well known for his active, continuing, leadership in spearheading the move to save Kanata’s South March Highlands and Beaver Pond, Chaired the Steering Committee. Now they have turned the next stage over to the Fund-Raising Committee.

“I believe that with the support and involvement of Kanata residents, we will see the ribbon cut, the facility opened, and the first swimmers into the pool in 2012. But to do that we need the Community’s help.”

Buy-A-Tile, a fund-raising incentive kicking off today, just in time for Christmas, will allow individuals, families and, ultimately corporations, to “buy into the future,” in Sheldon’s words.

Theoretically, the pool is composed of 32,000 individual tiles of which 10,000 are being made available, on a one-time basis, to buy in support of the new Centre.

“We’re going to start releasing those first 10,000 tiles to the public immediately – just in time for Christmas,” explains Sheldon. “But it’s a limited unique opportunity. Once they’re gone they’re gone!

“Talk about getting the perfect present for the person who has everything! From grandmothers to toddlers, to that difficult friend ... spend ten bucks, yes just ten dollars, and you not only get a personalized, numbered certificate but your name (or the name of the person for whom you buy the tile) will be spelled out on the walls of the centre.”

Furthermore, “Your name, or the name of that special person as well as their tile number, is immortalized. It’s there from the time the pool opens and remains there for the life of the pool; the owner’s own particular future footprint.”

But this will only happen with the first ten thousand tiles. “These will never, ever be re-sold,” Sheldon stated categorically, adding “and if people are inspired to dive down and see their tile site, a map showing the numbered placements will be displayed on the wall.”

The rule is one tile per name. If a family of four buy four tiles “they’ll obviously be in a block of four tiles,” explained Sheldon – and as for buying, “we’re making it easy and – most important at this time of year – affordable.”

After payment (credit cards and cheques are accepted: see ad this page) the donor receives an attractive certificate with an area left blank for the name of the individual receiving the gift. Each certificate also bears the number of a tile that matches the legend on the wall of the Centre where every tile is identified.

“Affordability is very important,” said Sheldon. “We want as many people as possible to get involved and to know that through their investment, they take ownership in an important facility that Kanata has needed for some time.

Life got a little brighter for children undergoing treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario on Dec. 2 with the arrival of the latest video gaming gadget, the Kinect for Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Child Life Interactive Computers for Kids (CLICK) program, Microsoft Canada announced the donation of more than 200 Kinect devices, which allow players to use their body and voice to play games.

The CLICK program provides patients and their families access to technology, helping to provide a sense of normalcy for the children while staying at the hospital.

It allows them to stay in touch with family and friends, to explore the Internet or keep up with school work.

“I think kids continue to be kids while they’re in hospital,” said Maureen Jones, Child Life specialist at CHEO. “The fact that they can (use technology) to keep up with their friends while they’re here and continue to increase their level of proficiency with the gaming is a big thing.”

“I never cease to be amazed how stoic the children are,” Harper said. “But even the bravest youngsters find illness and hospitals a little scary. The CLICK program goes a long way to easing their anxiety.”

The donation was an expansion of the CLICK program, a partnership between Microsoft and Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.

In addition to CHEO, 13 other Miracle Network hospitals across Canada, including SickKids in Toronto and the Montreal Children’s Hospital, will benefit from the program.

DINNER IN DUNROBIN Pam Dillon, left, along with Bruce and Marilyn Butler said lunch at St. Paul’s Anglican in Dunrobin last Saturday was “excellent.” Organizers said the same was true for the annual Christmas sale, taking place at the same time.

Members of Ottawa’s business community gathered downtown on Nov. 29 for the 13th annual Trees of Hope contest to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

“The Trees of Hope event is the beginning of the holiday season for us,” said Norma Lamont, vice president of community development for the CHEO Foundation.

“When you see the trees, all lit up, hear the choir singing, see the kids faces who attend the event – that sparkle in their eyes, and hear the adults talking about the holidays and looking for gifts for loved ones, it is all so magical,” The large crowd gathered in the ballroom at the Chateau

Laurier for the tree decoration competition and to bid in a silent auction to raise funds for CHEO. The Elmwood School Choir also performed at the event.

The event attempts to capture the spirit of the season by combining the beauty and imagination of tree decorating, seasonal music, and the essence of giving.

At the end of the night, the decorated trees are displayed throughout the halls of the hotel for all to enjoy throughout the upcoming holiday season.

The hotel expects approximately 8,000 visitors during the holiday season, all of whom will have the opportunity to cast a vote in the people’s choice awards until Jan. 2, 2011.

Money from the corporate

entry fees and donations from the people’s choice award will be combined with the proceeds from the silent auction and donated to CHEO. “The funds raised will fund equipment needs and research projects. It also supports certain programs like the therapeutic clowning program and buys games, books, toys, videos,” said Lamont.

She added that although the final count is not in, it looks like money raised from the Trees of Hope event will exceed $50,000.

This is a signature event for a hotel, said Deneen Perrin from the Château Laurier.

“We are so lucky to have a state of the art hospital in our community, our children are our future and we must ensure they receive the best care possible,” said Perrin.
