WINTER FUN AT THE RANCH
Goal of ‘natural leader’ is to solve beach ownership issue NO SHADOW
DEREK DUNN
Contrary to Wednesday’s blizzard that blanketed the region with snow, the area’s furry weather prognosticators are predicting a quick end to winter. Neither the Galetta gopher nor Woodlawn Willie saw their shadows on Groundhog Day. That’s supposed to mean winter will be over in less than six weeks. But it has to stay around long enough for winter carnivals planned for Galetta this Sunday and Kinburn and Carp the following weekend. 4
WINTER FUN West Carleton residents and visitors to the area reveled in the joys of winter on the weekend at the Pinto Valley Ranch Winter Fun day and the Fitzroy Winter Carnival. 4, 5
The annual winter family fun day at Pinto Valley Ranch was another success with plenty to do for young and old, including a chance for visitors to get up close to some of the farm’s critters, left. For more on the event, see Page 5.

West Carleton’s largest community association elected a new president and executive with an unofficial mandate to solve the beach ownership issue and bring the community back together. Len Russell won Sunday’s election over Jane Currie, an outspoken member of Friends against Privatization of Constance and Buckham’s Bay Beaches (FAP). Russell’s speech to some 160 Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association (CBBCA) members at Len Purcell Community Centre before ballots were cast Sunday had to do with recognizing the “high emotions involved and finding “a different way to solve the problem. He said waterfront owners have the right to peace and quiet, and not having beach partiers cut through their property. However, he also talked about keeping the beach open for CBBCA members. He joked that winning the election isn’t like winning a prize, it’s more like winning a chance to solve the issue and save the association and its many programs. “The good thing is that a lot of people on both sides want this solved, he said. “Most people want it to be like it was 20 years ago. Twenty years ago you never knew who lived on the beach. Most people don’t care who owns it. They only care it gets used by the community. Past president Andy Rapoch said Russell, who was named 2009 Constance Bay Citizen of the Year, is the ideal person for the job. “Len Russell is the best possible choice for CBBCA president. Len is one of the most, if not the most, universally respected members of this community, Rapoch said. See ‘CONSTANCE BAY’ page 3
