The stars of local businesses came out to celebrate the Chamber of Commerce People’s Choice Business Awards at the Brookstreet Hotel on Feb. 24.

Greeted with a red carpet entrance and a paparazzi photo opportunity, thanks to All Saints Catholic High School students, the evening was modeled on a Hollywood Awards-style night.

Over 300 people from the business communities in Kanata, West Carleton and Goulbourn attended the sold-out gala event. Attendees were dressed to the nines in redcarpet worthy gowns, tuxedoes and suits.

Television broadcaster Kurt Stoodley, of the A Channel’s A Morning, emceed the event in place of Angie Poirier who was unable to make the ceremony.

Councillors Marianne Wilkinson, Allan Hubley and Eli El-Chantiry were in attendance. Shad Qadri and Mayor Jim Watson were unable to attend the event but sent their best wishes.

Fire melts nets, cause unknown

Continued from front The two-storey commercial building suffered an estimated $2 million in damages and an additional $500,000 in damages to the contents.

The flames were brought under control around 8:33 a.m.

The fire was believed to have started in the kitchen area of the restaurant and lounge area and extended to the roof. There was heavy heat and smoke damage throughout the building, which had insurance.

The Thunderbird houses two indoor soccer fields, a nine-hold golf course and other sports facilities. Fire crews and building staff were able to isolate electrical power to the dome, which didn’t suffer any damage, preventing it from deflating.

The heat was so intense, said fire Chief Gerry Pingitore, that balls on the soccer fields were crumpled and the tops of nets were melted.

“The firefighters did everything they could to prevent it from spreading into the office area. Many of the business files were saved,” Pingitore said. “It was very dangerous because of the possibility of backdraft.

They did a very good job.”

The cause of the fire was still under investigation by the fire marshal as of Wednesday afternoon.

West Carleton Secondary School was abuzz with activity Feb. 26 as Sparks Taekwondo hosted its annual tournament. “We’ve got competitors aged four to probably 64,â€? said Sparks owner and ďŹ fth degree black belt Ron Sparks.

And it was a good day for students of the Constance Bay-based school. “As the host school, we certainly dominated in numbers as well as on the score

board,� said Sparks.

More often than not, it was Sparks students picking up gold medals.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to winners in each of several different divisions, explained Sparks.

More than 100 competitors of all ages were on hand for the event and more than 100 spectators came out to cheer on the competitors.

Sparks Taekwondo, established 18 years ago, holds classes Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the Constance Bay Community Centre.

Reports of eagles keep soaring in Nature’s Way

When I was young, one of the birds I most wanted to see was a bald eagle.

I admired their portraits in books and dreamt about them.

But they were rare back then, and resided on the U.S. Endangered Species List (since 1963).

In 1973 they gained additional protection when President Richard Nixon signed the U.S. Endangered Species Act into law, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources declared the bald eagle a provincially endangered species.

Eagles were rare because of habitat loss, human persecution, and DDT, the poison that also nearly wiped out the eastern race of peregrine falcon. DDT was banned in 1972 and eventually falcons and eagles began to produce healthy eggs and repopulate their former range.

In the United States, bald eagles increased from 417 nesting pairs in 1963 to more than 11,000 pairs in 2007. In southern Ontario there were virtually no nesting birds in the late 1970s; currently more than 60 territories are now occupied. As a result, in August 2009 the status of

bald eagles in southern Ontario was revised from Endangered to “Special Concern.”

Recent studies on Ontario bald eagles have provided some fascinating insights into their movements. In 2006, two Kingston eaglets harnessed with radio transmitters did something unexpected. After fledging, one headed north to Hudson Bay while its sibling flew south to Virginia. At year’s end they reunited back at their Kingston nest! Thanks to Sloan Watters and Bill Moore, I eventually met a bald eagle below the Mountain Chute Dam on the Madawaska River. Years later Donnie Gordon and I discovered a nest on an island below the dam, and even later Mark Stabb and I located a second nest farther downstream in the Madawaska.

Bald eagles are now commonly encountered on the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers, and they make regular winter appearances in Arnprior, Pakenham, and Galetta. Recent sightings come from PakenReal Estate

We are fortunate that these magnificent birds are now regularly encountered. They are huge – their wingspan approaches seven feet – and as adults (a stage that takes five years to reach) they are unmistakable.

For centuries bald eagles have been an American symbol of freedom and will. However, I wonder if the proponents of this iconic status were aware that bald eagles, in addition to being scavengers, are bullies and thieves (they rob fish from ospreys). Some might think their designation even more appropriate!

The latter is not surprising.

While fish are favoured meals, eagles readily scavenge animal carcasses, especially in winter.

Thus, wolves and coyotes play essential roles in the survival of eagles. Bald eagles also have a penchant for ducks.

They are drawn to large flocks, especially at freeze-up.

In late fall eagles are often seen pursuing common mergansers in White Lake.

I left the girls in charge of the farm with a list of reminders: 1. Feed the barn cats more than they need. When they are full, another bunch will emerge from the rafters. 2. Cody and Chelsea need fresh water and food everyday. Remember that Chelsea bites females and Cody eats everything that you don’t put out of his reach, including butter. 3.

Check the cow and sheep feeders every day; when they are empty call the neighbour. He will reďŹ ll them. ReďŹ ll the water; they are big drinkers - especially the lactating mama cows. 4. Don’t forget my New Years lambs in the barn. Don’t overdo the sweetfeed in the creep though. They will eat until they are paralyzed. 5.

Sheila the housecat will remind you she is in the basement. You will hear her singing when she hears your footsteps. She needs fresh water and food daily and lots of attention too. 6. If you have friends over, no smoking in the house or barn! We want them standing when we return. Have fun, be safe.

Big government, bigger problems The Harper government’s current challenge of sidestepping the Oda affair is an especially difficult one to manage. It has all the basic ingredients of a good story. It has conflict, hidden agendas, mysterious omissions and apparent misinformation.

The opposition parties are all excited about finally having something tangible to use to go after the government, despite their own lack of success in offering themselves to voters as any more noble or trustworthy than the government they are criticizing.

International Cooperation Minister Oda and Prime Minister Harper are certainly in a mess of their own making. How they will resolve it will tell us a great deal about the kind of respect they have for Canadians in general. The lesson here might be that bigger government breeds opportunities for bigger problems regardless of how honest or earnest politicians may be.

Our local councils, at least not in recent memory, have not had to deal with issues as silly and as blatantly demoralizing as the Oda affair. Rural populations still have a tremendous amount of control over what happens where they live.

When the local council wrestles with an issue, everyone knows about it. Quite often, in full public view. The smallness of a rural government guarantees its effectiveness.

Local councils have operated in a setting where voters could always come and watch how they worked and listen to their decision-making debates. Councillors would later have to deal with their critics right in the middle of the local grocery store.

Transparency and accountability are difficult to maintain in the big government arena, but they are necessary goals to strive for. With smaller government comes an expectation for decisions to be practical and effective.

The scope of issues that face a federal government is naturally more complicated and diverse than those of our local government. However, you cannot help but appreciate the ability and determination of local politicians to make good decisions in an honest way.

Perhaps the leaders in big government should, from time to time, make an effort to remind themselves about where they came from and how they got where they are today. Misleading Parliament and changing the rules and realities of government to accommodate a political agenda would never be allowed anywhere else. Our leaders have to set an example for the rest of us.

The rules are all there for everyone to see and respect. We follow them every time we interact with our neighbour or our employer.

We should expect our leaders to do the same.

The aging demographic: hear it roar Watching people break out in revolt all over the Middle East, Canadians wonder when it will happen here. The answer is, it won’t, because, relative to other parts of the world, we don’t have that much to revolt about.

On the other hand, we could speak up a bit more than we do now.

Take, for example, seniors. We have been hearing for years about the coming power of the over-65 demographic. And suddenly it is here. The first wave of the baby boomers has turned 65. Those who got there first have been patiently waiting for reinforcements. Now they are here and many more are coming.

The power is here. It just hasn’t been used yet. But there are issues where the voice of the over-65s could be raised. A nice test of the power of seniors would be the question of whatever it is that’s happening to buses in Ottawa these days.

The specific are a bit hard to follow but the generalities follow a pattern that has been familiar for decades. It goes like this: OC Transpo faces declining ridership and revenues so it increases fares and cuts routes. For decades people have been telling OC Transpo that cutting service and raising fares is not the way

Everybody recognizes that having more people ride the buses is a public good. It reduces traffic, cuts pollution and so on. But more people will only ride the buses if the buses are there. It sounds like the likelihood of them being there is decreasing.

This is where seniors could test their newly arrived political clout. The latest proposal nixes the idea of a half-price fare for seniors. It adds a couple of free days, Monday and Friday, providing seniors travel after noon, an idea that has rightly been criticized as social engineering of a most condescending sort.

cillor about, or stage a protest at city hall, some Monday or Friday after noon?

Maybe not. The cost issue is a good one, but it may not be paramount to many seniors. Not all are impoverished, nor do they want to be treated as if they are.

More crucial is the question of route cuts. The Transpo planners want, as usual, to cut some routes, and those would not be the ones zooming from the outer ’burbs along the Transitway to downtown. No, the routes we will lose will be the ones that meander through residential neighbourhoods, the ones that take a while to get downtown but stop close to where you live and, incidentally, take a lot of the neighbourhood kids to school and back.

Those routes are the most vulnerable because they are the least cost-efficient, and you know what that means. It means efficiency first, you second.

Another proposed efficiency is to reduce the number of stops for those routes that survive. The upshot is a longer walk to the bus, maybe a nice bit of exercise in the spring and summer, but not so great in the winter, and not great at all for those who don’t move as easily

as they used to.

All this produces a great occasion for seniors to do some roaring and frighten a few city councillors and bureaucrats.

The changes, as they have been outlined, are irrational, as usual, and seniors will feel it more than most.

The idea of public transit is to get people out of their cars. That’s always a good idea. In the case of some seniors, it’s a very good idea. But people need to be given a reason to get out of their cars.

So far, Transpo isn’t doing it. But the decision-makers should know that seniors, unlike younger folk, always vote. As long as they can get to the polls.

The question I have is what can we do to stop this barbaric practice around the world.

Would education help (in schools) to create an understanding and sensitivity, so people have a better understanding of the wild species that share our planet, or do we just lack the intelligence to step back and set our shallow emotions for entertainment aside and learn to appreciate the wildlife.

Have we become so removed from nature that the average person will never again understand and respect wild animals. Why this hatred and fear?

The government of the day, through the Minister of Veterans Affairs has made several announcements and promises on Bills C-55 (New Veterans Charter), which has received first reading in the House of Commons but has not progressed to the committee level.

Similar announcements and promises have been made on Bill480 by the Minister of Finance (removal of GST from poppies and wreath purchases) for which no legislation has yet been tabled.

As your readers know, the tabling and passage of these bills with Royal Assent will not be possible should the government decide to call an election.

The Royal Canadian Legion has written to both ministers on the matters of legislative procedure and has received assurances that these matters are being looked into.

These bills, however, may die on the order paper if an election is called and leave Canada’s disabled veterans, their families and The Royal Canadian Legion without the legislation they all need.

The West Carleton Health Access Foundation (WCHAF) has received its charitable designation after many months of anticipation, and is moving forward with the campaign to raise funds to replace the aging xray equipment located on the lower level of the West Carleton Family Medical Centre Building in Carp.

The Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, is now the owner/ operator of the X-ray diagnostic office.

With the support of the community the X-ray diagnostic office will remain open.

The X-ray service provides easy access to a wide geographic area, serving patients in Stittsville, Kanata, Carp and the large rural area of western Ottawa.

Currently almost 4,000 patients per year use the facility. With new state-of-the-art digital equipment the X-ray is sent by computer to a radiologist, read by the radiologist and the results sent back to the patient’s family physician, all by computer, often in a matter of hours, and in minutes if necessary.

For many, the new equipment will provide a ‘one stop shop’ for X-ray services. For others it will provide easy access to high quality X-ray services just an easy drive away.

Starting this year, a separate lower-cost, mini soccer program is being offered for U6 boys and girls: the U7 House League program will cover only a one-year age group.

The club is making an increased effort this year to provide all-girls teams wherever possible. The older girls’ divisions will cover three-year age groups (mixed house divisions are generally two-year age groups) and the club will monitor registrations carefully and look for every opportunity to form girls teams by combining

The change to using club-purchased jerseys has allowed the club and the Community Associations to help out some people less fortunate than us. In partnership with SchoolBOX (www. schoolbox.ca), a few dozen team sets of used (but still perfectly useable) soccer jerseys are on their way to Nicaragua. So later this year, the six colours of West Carleton community soccer teams will also be seen competing on the soccer fields of Central America.

“We have a strong base of long-standing volunteers from all the communities in West Carleton with many years experience of running our local soccer program,” Bazley said. “But, as in any organization, there is some turnover each year. Right now is a good time for new volunteers to step forward, because the majority of the board from last year have returned, so there is a wealth of experience available to help new volunteers learn the ropes.”

The West Carleton Soccer Club (WCSC) held its AGM last week and elected a board of directors for 2011/12.

For the coming year, the club president is Simon Bazley, vice president is Len Russell, Secretary is Karen Wilson and treasurer is Nancy Scully.

“The club is healthy,” Bazley said. “It’s well managed, financially ad administratively, for many years now.”

WCSC is not running a youth competitive soccer program in 2011: all youth competitive soccer in the area is now provided by the West Ottawa Soccer (WOS) Club. This means that all WCSC’s efforts can be focussed on recreational soccer and the club has a great set of programs lined up for 2011: something for boys and girls of all ages from pre-schoolers through teenagers.

Full details of all the programs and complete information on age requirements, fees, season dates, etc., are available on the club’s website www.wcsc.ca.

A Kinburn hunter received a special prize recently from the Renfrew Fish & Game Club for his bear-hunting prowess.

Dale Cavanagh’s award for bagging a 265-lb. bear was one of 27 trophies given out at the club’s annual awards banquet in Dacre.

At the meeting, guest speakers Liz Marshall and Nick Vandergragt of the Ontario Landowners Association stressed the importance of Ontario Crown land grant patents to landowners.

Marshall said it is time landowners reclaim their property rights, and that obtaining valid Crown land patent grants is part of that process.

Lois was predeceased by her 9 brothers: Johnny, Hugh, Cecil, Bunny, Garnet, Walter, her twin Lloyd, Mac, and Howard Lyon, as well as her only sister Irene Frappier. She was a cherished and proud “Grandma” of Chris Levesque, Chantelle (Dave) Cartman, Quentin (Tricia) Levesque, Lance (Sarah) Levesque, Jennie Levesque, Stacey (Candice) Levesque and Lindsay (Bob) Firestone and affectionate “Great-Grandma” to Jondavid, Tierney, Tyson, Austin, Corisa, Jack, Lola and Ellie. Lois also had a special place in her heart for Dianne Levesque and Teri Leech. Family and friends were invited to the Pilon Family Funeral Home, 50 John Street North, in Arnprior for visitation on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. A Funeral service was conducted at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Arnprior on Saturday, February 27th at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Milton Fraser officiating. Cremation followed.

In memory of Lois, donations made to the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Building Fund would be appreciated by her family.

Marilyn left this world on Thursday morning, February 24th, 2011. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Werry; two sons: Jerome Lemon (Nancy) and Jeffrey Lemon (Deb); two stepdaughters: Tricia Werry (Darryl Waddell) and Ellen Werry (late Freddy Castro); five grandchildren: Jean Castro Werry (Grandma’s Shining Light), Erik Lemon (Grandma’s Special Fisherman), Kirsten Lemon (Grandma’s Angel), Katherine Castro Werry (Grandma’s Brown Eyes) and Jessica Waddell (Grandma’s Little Helper and Playmate); two sisters: Georgia Veysey and Janett Kieley.

Predeceased by her parents Gordon and Greta (Colpitts) Sharpe; brother Gerald Sharpe and sisters: Muriel Smith and Mildred McFawn. Marilyn was a member and past president of the Arnprior Hospital Auxiliary; member of the Bridge Broads; Red Hats; Dochart Book Club; Arnprior and District Breast Cancer Support Group and FACT M-B. Family and friends were invited to the Pilon Family Funeral Home, 50 John Street North, Arnprior for visitation on Monday afternoon, February 28th from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Marilyn Werry was conducted in the Pilon Family Chapel on Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Dr. Richard Hollingsworth officiating. Cremation followed. In memory of Marilyn, a donation made to The Partners in Caring Foundation of the Arnprior Hospital, the Arnprior and District Breast Cancer Support Group of CHEO would be appreciated by her family.
