Garden idea grows Memorial Hall to boast new look this summer DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
A massive new retirement residence; a bronze sculpture of a soldier holding a letter; a new plaza in the village; and now a garden for the front of Memorial Hall: Carp has a busy summer ahead of itself. The West Carleton Garden Club is spearheading a community initiative to beautify the centre of the village, often the ďŹ rst building visitors take note of after crossing the train tracks on Carp Road. The plan is to landscape the property at the blue-coloured hall. “The landscape design includes a stone resurface to the front foundation, a retaining wall around the garden to level the soil, an interlock walkway up to a memorial bench, and, of course, perennial shrubs and groundcovers,â€? said Denise Burnham of the garden club.
“Eventually, a commemorative sculpture and plaque will also be placed in the memorial garden.â€? The hall is a busy meeting spot for area associations and groups, including monthly meetings of the garden club, which is donating its time and resources to plan and implement the project and to maintain the garden in the future. The club has met at the hall for more than two decades. The idea germinated when the club realized its $2,500 was “burning a hole in our pocket,â€? according to Burnham. The Carp library project, as beautiful as it is, is largely ďŹ nished. Club members were looking for a new challenge. The problem is, with the municipality insisting on insurance and other costs, the club can’t do the Memorial Hall project for under $20,000. See ‘Garden’ page 2

Near-even support for both Sterling and MacLaren as campaign closes Tory nomination battle looms DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
At roughly 1,000 supporters each, the March 31 ďŹ nal battle between Norm Sterling and Jack MacLaren is proving to be as exciting as any provincial election. The two have campaigned for several months for the right to represent the Progressive Conservative party in the riding of Carleton-Mississippi Mills in the lead-up to Ontario’s 40th general election Oct. 6. Sterling, a centrist, is the elder statesman with 33 years experience in provincial politics. MacLaren, on

the right side of the party, is a former president of the Ontario Landowners’ Association and a farmer and engineer living in MacLaren’s Landing. The campaign has been feisty, with some calling exposure of internal party politics a sign of a “robust democracyâ€? and others calling it a ďŹ ght that threatens to split the party to its core. Sterling counters the charge he is a career politician by talking up his days as a lawyer. Some say Sterling doesn’t do enough to solve constituents’ issues; he insists he has “helped a lot of people.â€? MacLaren answers every challenge to his libertarian values with assertions that today’s governments lack the moderate, middle-way they once held. Some say his

preoccupation with rural property rights issues puts him out of touch with suburban voters in Kanata and Stittsville, to which he responds with “property rights affects urban landowners as well.â€? Sterling says MacLaren is on the wrong side of major local issues such as the Carp LandďŹ ll expansion (which Sterling opposes) and the Nortel pension ďŹ asco. He said MacLaren has little interest in other issues such as providing more classroom spaces in Kanata. MacLaren, for his part, says Sterling can’t possibly stay fresh and offer new ideas after three decades in ofďŹ ce. See ‘Conservatives’ page 2
