Reviewing rural life Development shouldn’t disrupt rural charm: residents JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

Dunrobin and Kinburn residents agree their communities should welcome development but only if it doesn’t destroy the area’s rural charm. Residents also suggested commuter rail service could benefit their communities. Dunrobin and Kinburn citizens were among 50 people participating in a rural review discussion about the future of their villages at the West Carleton Community Complex April 2. Residents from Galetta and Fitzroy Harbour also attended. (See story in the April 7 Review). DUNROBIN

Dunrobin residents “really like their village” and welcome newcomers in limited amounts. Summing up the Dunrobin input at the rural review meeting, city staffer Cheryl Brouillard said they accept

slight higher density as long as it has proper infrastructure. Increasing traffic congestion could become a concern with new growth, said residents, noting that already there are intersections that are dangerous because of speeding cars. Making use of the rail corridor (building a Dunrobin train station) and setting up a park and ride could help, they suggested. They want to control residential sprawl, but don’t want “city overregulation,” Brouillard said. The problems of a Dunrobin caterer with city regulations was mentioned. “How can you get a local business going without encouragement,” said one woman. Dunrobin people value their small businesses, historic buildings (especially the churches) parks and dark skies at night (no light pollution), said Brouillard.
