The City of Ottawa has named most of the West Carleton roads due for repair this summer. Compared to last year when the economic stimulus plan was in full swing, the city is planning to spend only about one third as much on capital improvements. West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry said the 2010 season saw about $105 million spent across the city on repairs and resurfacing. This year that number has dropped to $37 million. He isn’t happy with the scale-back, saying at almost every chance he gets that road work is the number one reason for calls to his office. However, the budget figure might increase a touch, he said. “We are trying our best to do a little bit more,” ElChantiry said. “We are spending a lot less than any other year. This is a good step in the
right direction, but clearly we have to do more.” He cautions that the list below is for projects that have already gone through the tender process. More could be coming. The roads to have work done this summer include: • The paving of Carp Road from Kinburn Side Road to Galetta Side Road is tentatively set to start in July and take about a month to complete. • The paving of Stonecrest Road from Thomas A Donald Parkway to Kilkenny Drive will tentatively begin in July with an estimated end date in August. • Hard surfacing of March Valley Road is set to start this summer – exact timing has yet to be determined. • The completion of Armitage Road from Greenland to the dead end section of the road. Residents have complained about numerous area roads, including Kinburn Side Road.

RAINY DAY PEOPLE Linda Ladouceur and Wendy Nethercote participate last Saturday morning, at the Constance Bay Community Centre, in the pink ladies eight-kilometre fundraising walk to raise funds for admission to this year’s Weekend to End Women’s Cancer in Ottawa. The two women have been walking the same route through Constance Bay, rain or shine, for 20 years together.
