Through the fire Station, village celebrates firefighter’s 50 years of service; day job was carpenter at Rideau Hall DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com
Anton Reitsma was in his late teens when the hotel burned to the ground behind St. Michael’s school in Fitzroy Harbour. He, along with many people in the village, watched from the roadside as volunteer firefighters dashed back and forth in a kind of controlled chaos. It was sad to watch the threestorey structure succumb to flames, he said. But it was also impressive to see how hard the firefighters worked to save it, and the teamwork they displayed. He decided there and then to join the fire department. Now, 50 years later, this Saturday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a party will be thrown in his honour at Fire Station 62. “It’s been good, I’ve enjoyed it,” Reitsma said Tuesday, sitting in a swivel
chair in the empty station’s front office. “It was sad to see the old building burned. They tried hard, but sometimes nothing can be done.” The scanner behind him crackles and hisses out a few words while Reitsma, a fit and affable 70 year old, stops talking and perks up to listen. A few more hisses and the swivel chair is still again. A false alarm. Within an hour, at the scene of a junk fire, Captain Stu Penny would chime in that Reitsma never misses a call. “He goes to every call. He’s always at the end of my driveway waiting,” Penny said. “A great guy and a great neighbour. You couldn’t get a better neighbour.” Reitsma has been on scene at many of the most dramatic and tragic fires Anton Reitsma has helped people at the worst moments of their lives, in car accidents and house fires. But he has also helped others during the best moments of theirs, while working as a and car accidents in the region. handyman in the governor general’s residence. His advice? Treat everyone the same. City loses battle to reign in sprawl Council’s next challenge: decide what areas will be included in the urban boundary An Ontario Municipal Board decision to expand the urban boundary has left some wondering which rural areas will be added to the city’s urban limits. The city fought a losing battle at the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to defend its decision to limit the expansion of the city’s urban boundary to 230 hectares over the next 15 years. Instead, the boundary will increase by 850 hectares over the next 20 years – a figure that city staff had originally recommended and city council rejected in June of 2009.
The 15-year timeframe was aimed at promoting intensified development in the city’s urban core, and council said the boundary could be expanded after that as needed. Essentially, city council’s decision recognized that more sprawl would be necessary eventually – but that decision could be put off in the short term as the city focuses on building up the lands already available for development. A group of about 20 developers promptly appealed that decision to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). Some of those developers want to see the boundary expanded by between 2,500 and 3,000 hectares – a far cry
from the 230 the city approved, or even the 850 hectares the OMB decided to support. The urban boundary restricts where development can occur and where city services, such as water and sewer, are offered. The OMB’s written decision calls the city’s move “clever,” but added that it does not follow the province’s policy statement on how growth should be projected. For one thing, the city’s other policies include that same 20-year timeline, the OMB decision states. The city also ran into some trouble when it included a 15year timeline for residential growth.
