The founder of a sports team that allows special needs children to play soccer in Dunrobin is looking to expand the program.

The pilot season of Special Needs Soccer wrapped up in Dunrobin on July 27 after an eight-week session.

Greg Patacairk, head coach of the team of 13 autistic children who took to the soccer pitch for the first time in their lives this year, said they are seeking “exuberant individuals who are willing to coach. You need coaches who really have a good energy and drive to them,” he said.

The Dunrobin special needs soccer team attracted children from West Carleton, Stittsville, Barrhaven, Nepean and Kanata to take part in the pilot program.

Patacairk said the idea for the team came about “really as more of a fluke than anything else,” following a conversation with his neighbours, the Taffinders.

“We got to talking about special needs kids,” said Tracy Taffinder, mother of a seven-year-old autistic girl named Laura. “Most of them have neuro-typical siblings who are playing soccer right now.”

Instead of simply watching their brothers or sisters from the sidelines, it would be nice to have the opportunity to participate themselves, she said.

“I thought, ‘Well wait a second,’” Patacairk said, “‘Perhaps there is something very simple we can do to remedy this.’”

“It gave them a taste of what it’s like to be on a team sport,” Thomas Wismer said. “The fact that it’s a team with very little rules allowed them to have fun with their peers in a sports activity.”

Wismer said his boys had a great time kicking the ball up and down the field, seeing people they had met from other programs that had always been indoor and in a more managed environment.

“There aren’t many opportunities for them and their parents to all assemble and partake in the same activity, and for it to be a physical one,” he said. “It was a pretty unique opportunity.”

Patacairk would like to expand the program to include a broader age range and children with various special needs beyond autism.

Discussions about a basketball team in the fall are developing, and Patacairk said that with enough people to help, the program could be expanded enormously.

The idea of special needs soccer was born.

Their league doesn’t play traditional soccer; there are no designated teams and anyone is allowed to score on either net, but it’s an opportunity for the kids to run around, get some exercise and be involved in a team sport – an opportunity they rarely get, said Taffinder.

The pilot program had a maximum capacity of 13, and an age range from five to eight years old.

Without much experience with special needs children, Patacairk said he turned to the parents for help.

“I said, ‘Look, I know about soccer. I don’t know about disabilities. I will need your help.’”

Taffinder and her husband Phil were quick to get involved, helping to establish adaptations to the traditional sport to make room for autistic children’s needs.

One variation requires each child to have a parent shadow them across the field as they play, to ensure safely and comfort for all involved. Siblings of any age are invited to run alongside as well, changing the game into a family sport.

“I honestly believe the parents have gotten just as much out of this as the children,” Taffinder said. “It’s a social thing also.”

Autism often includes many undesirable social behaviours, making it difficult for autistic children to participate in social events.

In a safe environment like this one, those behaviours are more easily managed and tolerated, Taffinder said.

When the idea first came about, it took only three days for the program to fill, with parents responding from as far away as Barrhaven.

“We didn’t really have to advertise, because by the time I’d spoken to a couple of people, it was full,” Taffinder said. “You can’t really advertise for a full class.”

It became immediately evident that there was a need for this program, Patacairk.

“I found out very quickly that there’s really not much out there for these kids,” Patacairk said. “More of this is heavily required, really needed.”

Janet and Thomas Wismer from Morgan’s Grant enrolled both of their sons in the program; eight-year-old Max and

portable nets, cones, and “everything we could possibly require to run a soccer program,” Patacairk said. “No charges, no questions asked. It was awesome.”

Another local company made trophies for each of the participants, which were presented to them on their final session of Wednesday night soccer games on July 27.

The sad part is that, for now, the league has come to an end, said Patacairk.

Patacairk said he heard stories of parents coming home to find their children already dressed in their soccer jerseys, ready and waiting hours in advance.

Laura will be sad to put her jersey away, Taffinder said.

“It was only eight weeks, and most of them are only getting into the swing of things and learning what is expected of them,” she said. “There’s nothing else like this out there right now.”

Offering autistic children an opportunity like this one was unlike anything Patacairk had ever done before.

“All these kids are so excited to be there, they just really want to run,” he said.

As for the Wismers, they are about to embark on a family vacation to Prince Edward Island, which will hopefully distract the boys from missing soccer too much.

“They’ll definitely be asking about why we’re not going to soccer next Wednesday,” Wismer said.

Calvin DeHaan moves up to the pros courtney.symons@metroland.com

Every aspiring professional hockey player hopes to attract the notice of an NHL club.

Carp local Calvin DeHaan achieved that goal when he was only 18 years old, when the defenseman was chosen as the 12th overall pick by the New York Islanders in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

“It was a dream come true,” he said.

“One of the best days of my life.”

This year, he will play pro-hockey – but whether it will be with the Islanders or their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in Bridgeport, Conn., is as yet undecided.

Regardless, DeHaan’s father Bill said that Calvin will likely get to play a few NHL games with the Islanders this year.

“There’s going to be injuries and trades, and they might need an extra player,” Bill said. “He’ll get his opportunity this year.”

Calvin, who is now 20 and six feet tall, can play up to nine games with the Islanders before his contract fully kicks in. On his tenth game, he officially begins his NHL career and that’s when the big pay cheques start rolling in.

Calvin started playing hockey when he was around five-years-old in West Carleton.

“I spent countless hours on the outdoor rink when I was a kid,” he said.

Even before he discovered that hockey was his specialty, he showed athleticism in everything he did.

“Calvin’s hand-eye coordination was always really good when he was a baby,” Bill said. “No matter what ball or racket or stick he picked up, he always excelled.”

Calvin played on the only West Carleton team that has ever won an International Silver Stick – the peewee equivalent to the Stanley Cup. In 2001, Calvin helped lead the West Carleton Warriors to victory in the championship tournament held in Detroit, Mich.

From there, his resume exploded with a stint on the Kemptville 73’s team, followed by three years with the Oshawa Generals, becoming team captain this past season.

For two years in a row, Calvin has

played in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships for Team Canada, winning silver medals in both 2010 and 2011.

Bill couldn’t be more proud.

“It’s hard to even describe it when you see your child on a world stage like that, playing in front of such big crowds,” Bill said.

As thrilling as it is to see your child in action, however, it is equally difficult to see them get hurt, he said.

In a game against Switzerland during Calvin’s first World Junior tournament, he suffered a head injury. Most news agencies reported that he had a concussion, which fortunately was untrue. Regardless, it was hard to watch as a parent, said Bill.

“Your heart stops,” he said. “You know your own kids, and when you see them go down and stay down, you know something’s really wrong.”

Although Calvin’s head injury wasn’t too serious, he suffered a shoulder injury shortly after while playing for the Generals.

The injury happened on a Sunday evening, and by the following Tuesday morning the Islanders had flown him down to New York City to their team hospital; a few days later, he had an operation to fix the damaged cartilage.

Calvin hadn’t even signed his entry level contract at that point, but the Islanders still wanted to make sure he was given the best care possible, and quickly.

“That injury was a wakeup call to tell him how much stronger he needed to become,” Bill said.

That strength comes from training, which Calvin has been doing in spades.

He just returned from a training camp in New York.

“The days are long, but not too strenuous,” Calvin said. “We work out and skate in the morning, have some lunch, then get some downtime in the afternoon.”

Some team bonding experiences for the 40 Islanders prospects at the camp included a trip to a New York Mets game and some deep sea fishing.

Now, Calvin will spend a little time at home before heading back down to New York to continue training in August.

“I’m trying to be the best player I can be,” Calvin said. “I spend lots of

Perhaps some of his time in West Carleton will be spent training with his younger brother, Evan, who is also on track to become a professional hockey player.

The 16-year-old was drafted 40th overall in the Ontario Hockey League draft by the Sudbury Wolves, which was a higher draft pick than Calvin had been for the same league – he was 50th overall.

“Evan has some bragging rights there,” Bill said.

“They’re both very talented, similar players, but they seem to see the ice differently,” he said of his two sons who both play defense.

Hopefully, said Bill, Evan will play for the Nepean Raiders Junior A team this year, as he most likely won’t be called onto the ice in Sudbury anytime soon.

“It’s pretty tough for 16-year-olds to be getting ice time,” Bill said, “And it’s not so good to be just sitting there watching the game. He needs to be playing.”

As for Calvin, he will continue to live his childhood dream.

“I can’t explain why I love hockey so much,” he said. “Words can’t describe the feelings I have for the sport. I just have a blast on the ice.”

Calvin will likely find out whether or not he will be on the Islander’s lineup for this coming season by mid-October.

The Arnprior Solar Farm on Galetta Side Road is hard to miss.

An army of 312,000 bluishblack panels glisten in the sun, sitting on 81 hectares of land and collectively providing energy for up to 7,000 households in Ontario with its 23.4 megawatt capacity.

When the solar-powered system was built in 2009, it was the largest of its kind in Canada, and one of the largest in North America. It has since been surpassed in size, but still stands as a shimmering reminder of Ontario’s commitment to green energy.

Jon Kiernan is the solar director for Electricite de France: Energies Nouvelles Canada (EDF EN Canada), the company that developed the solar system in West Carleton. He said that the project has been a great success, especially on sunny days during the summer.

“On a day like today, we’re not only happier for the sunshine, but we’re in the money,” he said.

But it doesn’t take a hot sum-

mer’s day to generate solar energy.

The panels are skilled at grabbing what is called “grey light” as well as direct sunlight, allowing them to soak up solar power even when the sun is hidden behind clouds.

“I think most people would be quite astounded at the power that is generated on a day that looks pretty dull and grey,” Kiernan said. “There were several days in March when Arnprior was producing at its peak.”

Arnprior construction company M. Sullivan & Son Ltd. built the expansive system, with Tom Hughes as project manager. At its peak, the project employed around 150 workers.

“None of us had ever done something of that scale,” Hughes said.

Construction took place during the summer of 2009, which, as luck would have it, was one of the rainiest summers on record.

Seeing as every bit of work was done outside, the weather provided a bit of a challenge.

The project was breaking ground across the board, resulting in a lot of people coming to inspect and check their progress, and a slow-down in produc-

“As arduous as it sounds,” Hughes said, “It was a fantastic job to do. It put a feather in the cap of Sullivan & Sons,” which has thrived for almost 100 years in Arnprior.

Hughes is currently working on three different solar projects in Ontario; in St. Eugene, Edwards, and Beachburg.

As of this year, green energy projects need to complete a checklist required by FIT, including a renewable energy audit, making sure the construction will take place on approved land, and promising that 60 per cent of materials used are from Ontario.

All three projects have been in the works for a few years – before the new FIT regulations came into place.

The feed-in tariff (FIT) program is a policy designed for renewable energy technology. The program is the first of its kind in North America, and offers stable prices under long-term contracts for green energy projects.

Before the FIT program was implemented, the Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) stood in its place.

First initiated in 2007, RESOP was Ontario’s first “kick at the can at renewable energy,” Hughes said, with less stringent guidelines surrounding green energy construction.

“Right now, it’s hindering us,” Hughes said of the FIT program.

“It’s creating a bottleneck in the system.”

Currently, most applications to the FIT program are in the approval process. Companies operating under contracts from the previous RESOP rule are scrambling to complete their projects before being subjected to FIT’s guidelines. If construction isn’t complete by March of 2012, Hughes said, their contracts under RESOP will expire.

If the Conservatives win the upcoming provincial election, party leader Tim Hudak has already announced that he will axe the FIT program. The uncertainty of the project’s future is another reason why developers are hesitant to invest in green energy right now.

Regardless, Ontario is still proving to be a nation, and even world, leader in renewable energy production. $4.6 billion has been invested into the cause since 2003 in Ontario alone, bringing 1,200 megawatts of renewable energy onto the grid.

Coal burned to produce traditional energy is the single largest source of air pollution in Ontario, so any alternative energy reduces pollution accordingly.

The reason why Ontario, and particularly eastern-Ontario, is such a boon for green energy developers is threefold, Kiernan said.

Firstly, Eastern Ontario is less affected by what is known as the lake effect. Regions close to large bodies of water tend to have more cloud cover, meaning that the farther you are from lakes and oceans, the less clouds there tend to be.

Southerly areas, which are the more populated regions of Ontario, are more conducive to solar power because the sun rises higher in the sky.

Thirdly, solar energy is easier to capture in locations that are higher up, not because they’re closer to the sun but because

Ottawa to host fundraising polo tournament The Polo for Heart Tournament will mark the first polo competition that Ottawa has seen in over 20 years.

Five professional polo teams will travel to Huntingford Farm in Almonte on Aug. 6-7 to compete in the all-weekend event to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.

“If you’ve never seen polo live, it’s definitely something to see,” said George Bezak, polo coach and captain of one of the competing teams. “You’re going to see fast, very high-caliber games.”

The event will run Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m, with the championship game taking place at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

General admission tickets can be purchased for $10 per day, and groups of eight can sponsor the event by purchasing a table that includes beer and wine tickets, a fire-grilled lunch, and the perfect vantage point to watch the games.

The event is part of a three-city tour.

Competing teams have already played in London on July 10, and will travel to Ottawa for the second part of the tournament.

The finals will take place in Toronto on Sept. 4.

Huntingford Farm, owned by Alfonse and Pia Reiss, is considered a world-class facility for polo and equestrian events, and their stables and grounds will be put to the test during this tournament, as the 20 competing players will each bring with them around four horses.

“You have the potential of seeing between 80-100 horses,” Bezak said. “There’s going to be a lot of activity.”

the field on horseback is Laura Willson, a professional polo player from Florida who is training in Canada this summer.

When asked about the dangers of the sport, she laughed.

“Oh, I’ve fallen off my horse a ton,” she said. “I’ve broken three bones in five years, and all of them were polo accidents.”

The only major rule of polo is called “the line of the ball.” When a player hits the ball with their mallet, an imaginary line is created in front and behind it that no player can cross.

“It’s kind of like the line down the middle of a road,” Bezak said. “You have people going down both sides of the line, but you can’t cross or else you’ll run into each other. The difficult part, though, is that the line is always changing.”

Players who unintentionally break this golden rule can cause injuries like Willson’s.

“Somebody crossed me and I didn’t have time to stop so we just t-boned each other,” Willson said. “Both of our horses went down. My helmet fell off before I hit the ground. I was lucky to just break a rib.”

Lucky might not be the word, but it certainly could have been worse.

Bumps like these aren’t uncommon to the sport of polo, which is referred to as “hockey on horseback” by its players.

“There’s a lot of contact in the sport,” Bezak said. “A lot of people will purposely bump into each other to get a better jump on the ball.”

Each polo match is broken up into four periods, or “chukkers” as they call them, seven-and-a-half minutes each. Play stops when someone crosses the line of the ball, but not when someone scores. There are no goalies in polo.

The small, hard plastic balls used in the sport have been known to travel up to 100 km/h if whacked hard enough.

Teams consist of four players, labeled 1 through 4. Player 1 is the most offensive; player 4 the most defensive. Two umpires on horse track the players across a field that is as big as 10 football fields.

Bezak said the sport isn’t as scary as it sounds.

“It’s a really fun sport on horseback. If you’re involved with

horses, I think it’s something you should definitely try,” he said, adding that some beginners who’ve never ridden a horse are the ones who pick it up the most quickly.

“There’s nothing like going 40 kilometres per hour on a horse with people chasing you down the field while dodging balls,” he said.

The best way to ensure success as a polo player is to find the right horse.

“The horses make up to 70 to 80 per cent of the game,” Bezak said.

New players will often steer the horse in the wrong direction, but trained horses will instinctively know to follow the ball, and will lead their rider in the right direc-

Special kids need special coaches

I

t all started with a simple conversation between a soccer coach and the mother of a seven-year-old girl with autism.

Most of the kids in Dunrobin spend their springs and summers playing organized sports like soccer, noticed the coach.

But what about children with autism and other mental health issues, asked the pair?

Greg Patacairk, a longtime children’s soccer coach, had a simple solution.

Recruit a team of special needs children and allow them to play the Beautiful Game with slight modifications. There’s no organized teams and kids are allowed to score on either net.

But the children can run around, get some exercise and participate in a team sport — a rare experience for them, said Tracy Taffinder, mother of a seven-year-old autistic daughter.

Patacairk relied on the help of parent volunteers, who acted as shadows for the children as they played on the field.

The parent volunteers helped Patacairk make adjustments to the game to fit the needs of the children. The pilot program was a great success.

The first-ever West Carleton soccer team for

special needs kids filled its roster quickly with 13 children who have autism.

And not just West Carleton kids.

Parents from as far as Barrhaven signed their kids up for the program.

The sad part is the season had to end in July.

Patacairk heard stories of parents arriving home to find their kids dressed in their jersies waiting to play soccer.

The Dunrobin man said he wants to expand the program -- both geographically and by offering more programs, such as basketball.

But he needs a lot more volunteers.

That’s where the public can help.

Volunteers are needed to help coach the teams, to shadow the players and organize the games.

Teens looking for a rewarding way to fulfill their volunteer hours graduation requirement would make great volunteer coaches.

Patacairk has latched onto a great idea, one that can gather steam with the support of a caring community.

Hopefully this idea will catch on across Ottawa.

How to kill your intuition D

espite and because of claims that we make the bulk of our decisions intuitively and within a matter of milliseconds, I am on a purposeful quest to quash my intuition.

It hasn’t served me well, it’s expensive, and it needs to be put in its place.

The thing is I’m a notorious joiner.

Nothing gets my blood going like signing up for things.

Oh, the sweet thrill of the registration process!

In the past three years I have forked over hundreds of dollars for the following: French classes (twice); cooking classes; teacher’s college application fees (three times); ashtanga yoga; swimming lessons; boot camp; gymnastics boot camp; and several trial gym memberships.

Sadly, I have yet to see the inside of a GoodLife Fitness, I have plateaued at an intermediate level in French since 1999, I am not a qualified teacher, and I still don’t know how to cook or swim proficiently.

My husband, the more reflective within our spousal unit, always attempts to curb my impulsivity. But I am too quick to fork over my non-refundable registration fee, which is inevitably followed by

I’ve decided to change my extemporaneous ways once and for all. Yes, I’ve become a list-maker.

– at the back of the cupboard – and pull out the oatmeal or protein-packed muesli instead.

The absence of temerity has also given my bank balance a boost. First, I’ve come to realize that camp showers are expensive and more often than not unnecessary. Second, instead of succumbing to daily Rogers-On-Demand movie requests and fee-per-use swims at the public pool, I’ve discovered many free or cheap day trip vacation alternatives for me and the kids.

Finally, I’ve foregone debit and credit card purchases, prudently crafting a budget and determining how much cash I will require each week for groceries, toiletries and miscellaneous extras.

The “pain” of handing over cold, hard cash which has been carefully considered in advance is much more real than the delayed anguish that often comes with perusing a Visa statement.

As a result, I’m more cautious with my spending. I delete Groupon ads, and yes, I am that woman who returns things to the cashier at point-of-purchase because I’ve gone over my self-imposed limit.

For me, impulsivity and intuition are too closely related to differentiate.

The next time someone tells me to

“listen to my gut,” (or my heart or my bowel), when making a decision, I’ll try to resist. In my experience, my gut doesn’t tell me much except when I’m hungry.

Instead, I’m putting it on paper, delaying my response, and being more speculative about the rumblings in my various organs.

It may take a bit more time at first, but in the long term I know I’ll save hundreds of dollars, benefit my health, and, most importantly, quash my infamous reputation.

Chartwells to host presentation aimed at helping dementia patients

Waste Management hosts charity golf tourney in Kanata WASTE MANAGEMENT Waste Management Inc. is hosting its annual corporate golf tournament for the first time in Canada. The golf tournament, which raises money for local charitable organizations, will be held in Ottawa at the Marshes Golf Club in Kanata on Aug. 2 and 3.

Stonecrest Elementary School teacher Natalie Ioanidis is one of the newest inductees into the McGill Sports Hall of Fame for her three seasons of victories with the women’s soccer team from 1989-91.

A ceremony on Oct. 13 will begin her official Hall of Famer status, along with five other chosen athletes.

In May, Ioanidis received a phone call from McGill University athletic director Drew Love.

She wasn’t home at the time, so Love left a voicemail giving the news.

“I still have the message,” Ioanidis said. “I can’t erase it.”

The road leading to this honour began when she was only seven years old and living in Beaconsfield, Que. As the youngest child with three older brothers, she never wanted to be left behind when they played soccer together.

“Whatever the boys did, Nat did too,” she said. “A lot of my soccer practice was out on our lawn, battling my brothers and the neighbourhood kids.”

Instead of playing video

games or going on the computer, they would stay outside until it got dark.

“We spent all our time out there on the pitch, on the backyard pitch,” she said.

When she first joined a soccer team, she was assigned the position of left wing.

“The reason they put me there was because no one else would play left wing, because no one wanted to play with their left foot,” she said. “I didn’t kick with my left foot then, but over the years I became good with both.”

Her first significant victory came in Grade 8 when her team won a national championship.

From there, it was one victory after another, including three bronze medals throughout high school and CEGEP, the Quebec equivalent of Grade 12 and 13.

While attending John Abbott College in Montreal (for her CEGEP schooling), Ioanidis was asked to travel with a youth soccer team to Denmark for the Dana Cup, the largest international youth soccer tournament in the world. She served as a liaison between the young 14-year-old girls and the older male coach.

tended the tournament to play and observe soccer matches on fields of crushed rocks instead of the grass we are used to. Ioanidis met teams from all over the world.

“It was an amazing experience to say the least,” she said.

Her time at John Abbott led to another defining moment of her life – it was there that she met her husband McArdle who played on the football team.

“When the seasons started, we were down in the change room areas together, on the practice fields adjacent to each other,” she said. “And that’s it.

That was that.”

The two dated for ten years before marrying, and are still together today.

After CEJEP, Ioanidis went to McGill for a three-year Bachelor of Education program, playing soccer all the way through for the McGill Martlets, filling a position that was a unique blend of forward and midfielder.

“I was an attacking midfielder,” she said, which meant she would go forward to attack the ball, but run back to act as defense as the ball moved up the field.

The last cat story, I promise

I

’m sure by now you people are tired of reading about my cats. Well, I will try to make this the last cat story for a while. Just think of this as a wrap-up to the cat season.

On April 1, our tame calico Penelope gave birth to four kittens. For the next month, her nine sisters and cousins gave birth to their own litters.

Not all of them lived. Some were just too little and didn’t survive.

But by the middle of May, we had about 40 new, healthy kittens on the farm. It was a bumper crop, to be sure.

DIANA FISHER Accidental Farmwife Now, most farmers will tell you that the feral barn cat is an absolute necessity on the farm.

They control the rodent population, particularly when grain is being stored in the barn.

Most barns have at least two or three cats on site. Larger farms need six to a dozen cats to get

the job done.

Typically, the cats are fed once in the morning, and that’s it for the day. The farmer doesn’t necessarily measure out an exact half cup of feed per cat.

He just puts one big bowl down and if they miss chow time, tough for them.

Fights occasionally break out, and dominance is asserted.

Males reaching adulthood have to prove their superiority, or they are quickly run off the farm by the resident alpha male.

Mother cats just keep having

kittens, sometimes two litters in a summer season, until they are worn out from childbirth and nursing.

Kittens born in the colder months rarely last until springtime.

Many get viruses that, left untreated, spread and wipe out the younger farm cat generation. Some people call this survival of the fittest. I call it depressing.

Before I arrived on the farm scene in 2007, my Farmer’s cat population was “managing itself ”, by the aforementioned processes.

But when I saw the first kitten stagger past me with infected eyes, I put gloves on and caught the scrappy little thing.

I administered Polysporin eye drops and homeopathic respiratory remedies.

When that didn’t work, I smuggled the cat to the vet.

Yes, I know I was going against the typical farm system, but I couldn’t bear to see that kitten suffer.

Two hundred dollars later, I had antibiotics to cure my kitten.

McGill Hall of Fame athlete teaches team values to children, students SOCCER, from 11 “I was very successful there,” she said of her time at McGill.

“That’s where I played better than I ever had before.”

But it wasn’t only soccer that Ioanidis excelled in. Her success as a ringette player also stemmed from her sibling rivalry during her childhood.

“My brothers played hockey but that wasn’t big for girls at the time, so I played ringette instead,” she said.

She played both sports while at university, which presented some scheduling challenges.

“I would sometimes go from soccer practice at McGill which would be two hours, and then go right to ringette practice for another two hours,” she said.

Her team competed in the first national ringette tournament ever and earned a bronze medal.

Upon graduation, Ioanidis moved to Ontario where she and husband McArdle toured the province before settling down in West Carleton.

Ioanidis played two seasons with the Nepean Spirits starting in 1997 to end her soccer career.

A torn knee prevented her from playing in the finals, but her team won back to back national championships.

These days, Ioanidis still kicks around a soccer ball with her two sons; 10-year-old Nathan and eight-year-old Aaron, but not the way she used to.

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a diagnosis that took the active and athletic Ioanidis a long time to accept.

“It puts the brakes on your life,” she said. “The co-ordination sometimes gets the better of me, even though my brain is still like, ‘Yeah, do it!’ I’m not as graceful as I used to be.”

That doesn’t mean she no longer lives an active lifestyle, however. She bikes, swims, and coaches both of her boy’s soccer teams, as well as the teams at Stonecrest where she teaches core French to children from junior kindergarten to Grade 7.

“I hope they can experience what I did through sports,” she said of coaching. “I’m hoping that maybe these kids will have gotten enough from me, just that little bit, to encourage them to go on and continue playing sports throughout their lives.”

When the ceremony on Oct. 13 secures her place in the McGill Sports Hall of Fame, she will continue a long-standing family tradition.

James Ioanidis, her father, is the only tennis player in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

Her grandfather Ian Wooley is in there as well, for basketball.

He was captain of the 1932 Winnipeg Toilers team, and survived a tragic plane crash that killed two of his teammates. Her greatuncle Foster Wooley has a place in the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame for his hockey playing.

Even her husband Andrew holds a spot in the John Abbott Football Hall of Fame.

“You didn’t sit around,” Ioanidis said of her family. “You got involved and it didn’t matter your level, you always pushed yourself. It was always give your best no matter what.”

Ioanidis still lives by those words today, and is proud of where they have taken her throughout her life.

Her advice to other young athletes is to never forget their achievements.

“When you’ve accomplished something at any level, make

sure you write it down,” she said. “If it’s an article, put that clipping aside, because otherwise you’ll forget.”

Ioanidis has a big box full of records of her achievements, with programs of every tournament she’s ever played in.

It helps her to remember her

days as a professional soccer player, but more importantly, how it felt to be a part of a team.

“I’m a very driven, competitive person, but my goal was always with the team,” she said.

“No one person could beat the other team; it had to be all of us or none of us.”

On any excursion into the wilds there are many living things that cross our paths. But for every creature that reveals itself to us, there are myriad more that remain unseen.

However, once we learn how to look for their signs, the evidence of their comings and goings is always present.

For example, when you encounter a shallow tunnel breaking through the ground in a mucky place, you know that a star-nosed mole, one of the most unusual animals in the world, is in town.

As in other moles (including the hairytailed mole, also found locally), a starnosed mole’s front feet are enlarged and equipped with huge flat nails for digging.

These tools allow a mole to dig through soft soil, creating tunnels in which it searches for earthworms. The huge feet also make great paddles for swimming, allowing a star-nosed mole to search the bottom of ponds for aquatic prey, a behaviour shared by very few members of its group.

Moles have extremely small eyes for good reason. They spend most of their time in a world void of light and colour.

MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way Eyes are not only unnecessary; they would be an impediment because of all the soil that would constantly be in them.

Ears would also be problematic and unneeded so these outer structures are absent.

The hair of a mole is also adapted for life in tight spaces. Unlike that of other mammals, moles’ hairs are short and lie in all directions. That feature allows a mole to back up or go forward in a small space with the same relative ease.

Of course the most unusual thing about a star-nosed mole is its unique, name-giving nose. The end of that peculiar structure flares out in 22 pink finger-like projections forming a star.

Each of the star’s rays is equipped with

hundreds of special cells called Eimer’s organs. However, those sensory cells do not respond to odours and neither do they react to electrical fields as has been speculated. The special sensors in a starnosed mole’s nose react only to touch!

When the nose contacts an object of interest, the rays repeatedly touch it, providing the mole with a tactile picture of the item. Finally the object is touched with the lower innermost pair of rays that provide a fine scale assessment.

When identified as edible, the prey is gobbled down. The speed of this action is so fast that in 2005 it earned the star-

nosed mole a place in the Guinness Book of Records for being the fastest mammal alive when it comes to dining. A mole’s record time for processing a meal is a mere 120 milliseconds!

Perhaps it should not be surprising that this local animal holds a world record for after all it was born with a star over its head.

40 kittens a handful for farmwife He is now the large orange alpha male in our barn, and the main source of my kitty problems. The Farmer said he told me so. I interfered with nature and look what happened.

So? What to do?

Those kittens are now my responsibility.

I allowed them to be born. I took care of my 40 new kittens, their eye infections and their stuffy noses. I took one of them to the vet and shared his medicine with everyone else until they were all better.

But 40 kittens, plus the 10 prolific mamas and handful of adult males we have on the farm are too many, even for a crazy cat lady.

After the kittens had passed the eightweek stage where they could be weaned, I put an ad on www.kijiji.ca.

Now it’s August, and I’ve got just seven kittens left. Three are in the “taming room” in the basement and four still roam

the barn, too big and wise now to be lured into my cat carrier.

Two adolescent males were shipped off to live on a new farm.

I am still trying to catch the dominant orange male. The Papa Garfield. Big Daddy of them all. Of course, catching and finding homes for my surplus cats isn’t going to solve my problem.

I realize this, so you can stop writing that email to me right now, cat activists. I know I have to get them all fixed.

The problem is the cost, not the ideal, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t have $2,000 to throw around. Maybe when I sell my Farmwife book I can put part of the profits toward the cat situation. But in the meantime, it would be really nice if the municipality, along with some local veterinarians, would pitch in and help to solve this problem. I’m sure I’m not the only farmer in the area with a bumper crop of kittens this year.

Constance Bay’s Samantha Cremer took a major step towards becoming a licensed pilot on July 13 when she took her first solo flight as part of a unique scholarship program offered by the air cadets.

The 17-year-old received an invitation to the air cadet power pilot scholarship course, granting her seven weeks of intense flight training at the Durham Flight Centre in Oshawa, Ont. At the end of the course, she will walk away with her private pilot license.

She maneuvered her first flight completely alone out of Oshawa Municipal Airport in a Cessna-152 while her instructors watched from the ground.

Cremer has been an air cadet for six years, and said that the reason she joined was to get her private pilot license.

Normally, such a license will take around six months and thousands of dollars to achieve, but not so for Cremer. “This has been my whole goal,� she said of achieving flying status. “Everything I worked so hard for is finally happening.�

Last year, Cremer earned her glider license, enabling her to fly a glider plane that has no engine but is instead towed up into the sky and flies on wind currents.

To practice her gliding, Cremer goes to the Smith’s Falls airport with her fellow air cadets. When she receives her private pilot license, she said she will most likely fly out of the Arnprior airport.

Her father recently bought a plane and will purchase a hangar there.

Capt. Joyce Crandell, an instructor at the Durham Flight Centre, has witnessed Cremer’s progress since training began on July 4 with 23 other recipients of the scholarship.

After the training ends, “she’ll be just like any other private pilot in Canada,�

Crandell said. “She will be able to rent a plane, fly a plane, go wherever she

likes.�

When Cremer applied for the scholarship last winter, she fought through a rigorous selection process including the verification of her school grades, writing an essay about why she should win, an interview, as well as an aviation-related exam. “I’ve been studying for that exam since I was 12 years old,� Cremer said.

More than 170 applicants applied in Ontario this year, and 82 were accepted.

Five training centers in Ontario house the lucky air cadets during their training: Brampton, Breslau, London, Oshawa and Windsor.

Some on-the-ground training takes place including theory of flight, meteorology and navigation, but much takes place up in the clouds.

On July 22, Cremer went for what is called an instrument flight, where a visor blocked her view of the window and all she could see were the plane’s instruments. She had to rely on only her readings of those instruments to keep her in the air, while an instructor sat beside her to prevent any nosedives.

Cremer said she wasn’t scared, but a little disoriented. “Sometimes you feel as if you’re falling downwards to the left, when really you’re flying upwards to the right,� she said.

A total of 45 hours of flying time are required to achieve their license or “wings� as they call it, and the cadets will accumulate around 48 hours in the sky.

The power pilot scholarship course trains 255 pilots across Canada every year, and receives funding from the Department of National Defense. It’s one of the longest standing projects of the Air Cadet League of Canada, which has been around for 70 years.

When Cremer earns her wings, her first priority involves a little bit of mischief. “I want to bring up my friends and do some spins and steep turns to scare them,� she said.

As for her plans for the future, Cremer will attend Acadia University in Nova Scotia for biology, then hopes to go on to medical school. “I want to become a doctor,� she said. “Flying is more of a hobby, but maybe

I can incorporate it into my job somehow.�

For now, she will continue to live in Durham College residence with the rest of the flight scholarship recipients and work hard for her wings.

Last Wednesday, a driver came upon a slow moving SUV while heading north along Marchurst Road and deciding to speed pass it. Without giving it much forethought, other than to ensure that the oncoming lane was clear, the driver pulled out to the left and started to pass the SUV. Without any warning the SUV executed a left hand turn right in front of her vehicle and caused her to instinctively slam on her brakes and turn frantically to avoid a collision.

In her attempt to avoid a collision the driver lost control of her vehicle and ended up spinning into the ditch.

Even though the SUV driver was responsible for ensuring that his or her left hand turn was done in safety, he managed to escape the collision untouched and unaware of the consequences of his actions. By the time the dust settled on the single motor vehicle accident the SUV was nowhere to be found.

DEER COLLISION COUNTER Week 33 more deer collisions were reported in the rural west districts; two in West Carleton and one in the Rideau-Goulbourn ward.

The total score now stands at 75 to 49, in favor of Rideau-Goulbourn.

BREAK AND ENTER • July 25: 2200 section of Kinburn Side Road, West Carleton: An unidentified thief entered into an unlocked garage sometime between 5 p.m. on Sunday., July 24 and noon on Monday., July 25 and rummaged through an unlocked vehicle.

The thief entered into the garage through an unlocked side door. Reported stolen was a $300 Stihl chainsaw.

MISCHIEF • July 24: 213 Vances Side Rd., Baskin’s Beach: A complainant at the Port of Call Marina reported to police that unidentified persons had set two small fires near a building at the marina and vandalized the washrooms using a can of black spray paint.

The mischief occurred sometime during the overnight hours on Saturday, July 23 As a result of this latest incident, it was also reported that a dead gopher was set on fire near a large wooden boat storage building about one week ago.

Youths on bicycles were seen in the area but no suspects were identified. Remember, report all crime, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. • July 27: 3774 Carp Rd., Carp Village: A complainant from the St. James the Apostle Church reported a mischief to property incident that occurred sometime between July 20 and 26.

Sometime during this period unidentified persons entered into the children’s nursery enclosure and melted a few plastic toys with some sort of heat source and slashed a large inflatable ball.

Furthermore, two metal hacksaw blades were found planted in the ground on the north side of the church, in an area not widely utilized by the congregation.

SUSPICIOUS • July 23: Crofter’s Grove, Greenlands: Police were informed about an ongoing problem with young drivers using a piece of private property, either out of laziness or for fun, as a cut through between Farm Lane and Ironwood Court.

One teenage driver from Forestview Lane was warned by police about using other people’s land as a shortcut and trespassed from the property after his pickup truck was spotted exiting the private laneway at around 1:30 p.m. on July 23.

Police investigation revealed that the driver was linked to an earlier suspicious incident where two unidentified vehicles drove through the property at a high rate of speed during the early morning hours on Saturday. • July 25: Carp Road, West Carleton: Shortly after midnight on July 25, a homeowner called police after she became concerned for the wellbeing of an elderly couple. The homeowner’s concern was sparked by the unusual behavior of the couple’s dog; over the past few hours the dog had

THEFT • July 25: Kinburn Side Rd, Woodlawn: Two unlocked vehicles, belonging to a single owner, were rifled through sometime during the overnight hours on July 24, by an unidentified thief.

Reported stolen were approx. $10 in change, several CDs, cigarettes, and a black eel skin wallet containing credit cards and personal identification. • July 28: 115 Constance Bay Rd., Constance Bay: Three teens from Kanata were formally warned and trespassed from the Constance Bay LCBO after they were spotted leaving the store with two unpaid for bottles of liquor. Before the teens could make their getaway in a black Honda Civic an employee jotted down the licence plate and description of the vehicle and occupants.

After speaking with one of the boys’ dad, who happened to be the registered owner of the car, the investigating officer instructed the teens to return to the store.

Realizing the gig was up the boys’ confessed to the shoplifting incident and apologized to the storeowners for their stupid behavior.

All three boys were turned over to their parents for further parental punishment.

Police checked in on the elderly couple and found everything to be in order. • July 26: Peter Robinson Road, West Carleton: On July 26, a homeowner reported a suspicious incident to police involving a plain white van and a driver claiming to be there for a package pickup.

The homeowner stated that at around 4 p.m. the van backed up to his garage and an unidentified male knocked on his door.

When he answered the male told him that he was there to pick up a package for Fedex.

No such request was made by the homeowner and Fedex did not have any scheduled pickups or deliveries on Peter Robinson Road.

The driver was described as a white male, five foot eight with a skinny build. He wore a pair of jeans with no uniform or identification and only carried what looked like an electronic pad.

This is the first year AQHA has run such an event, with nine different shows like it going on across Canada and the United States.

Whether you arrive by road or by air, you’re invited to the Carp Fly-In/Drive-In breakfast on Sunday, Aug. 7 at the Carp Airport.

The sky and runways will fill up with as many as 100 aircrafts from airports all over Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec for the event run by Chapter 245 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA).

“This is our turn to host the local fliers,” said Russ Robinson, vice-president of Chapter 245.

Many airports host similar events, and pilots are kept busy throughout the summer going to a different airport breakfast every Sunday.

“It’s a once-a-year chance to see what we do at the Carp airport and how we do it,” Robinson said.

From 8 to 11:30 a.m., Robinson and crew will serve up a $6 breakfast including bacon, eggs, toast, beans, tomatoes, coffee or tea and orange juice, which

As many as 340 lots will face the runway, enabling pilots to store their planes in their backyards.

“It’s a chance to see the airport before all this development starts up,” Robinson said.

While Robinson’s own 1946 plane is in the shop being rebuilt, many other experimental planes that members built themselves will be on display.

Attendees can learn about sport aviation, and see planes used purely for entertainment and recreational purposes.

Even if the skies don’t cooperate, the

event will still run.

“We will be there making breakfast regardless of what the weather does to us,” Robinson said.

The EAA hosts chapters all around the world, bringing pilots and aviation enthusiasts together through publications, conventions, and fly-in breakfasts like this one.

Carp Airport is located off of Carp Road, across from the Irish Hills Golf Course.

The Chapter hangar is located on the east side of the airport.

2 Parts Clerks: We are looking for a part clerk, in our Carp and St Isidore location. This person must be computer literate, bilingual is an asset, good communication skills, have excellent people skills and have mechanical knowledge. This person must be willing and understand that continuing education is a necessary tool which becomes part of his/her daily routine.

1 Payroll Clerk: We are looking for an experience payroll clerk, in our Carp location to handle our payroll for our three locations. This candidate must have experience and knowledge of the Ontario provincial government regulations governing the payroll rules and regulations. This person must be computer literate, good knowledge in Excel and word software, bilingual is an asset, good communication skills, have excellent people skills, well organize and self-discipline in their work.

Beloved son of Willa Wright of Arnprior and of the late Harvey Clark. Beloved husband and best friend of Judy Ayotte (nee Baskin). Walter is also survived by his children: Justin and Sasha; his siblings: Eric Wright (Jean), Alan Wright (Cathy), Margaret Wright (Adam Low), Phyllis Wright (Brian Vezina) and Brenda Ruhnke (Randy); his grandchildren: Alexis, Ryland, Jenna, Joshua, Jakob and Lukas as well as several nieces and nephews. Walter will also be missed by his aunt, Laura Ashman; Judy’s mother, Freda Baskin (late Russell); Judy’s children:Jodie Baird (Rob), Bradley Ayotte (Sarah), Lauren Ayotte (Marc Pichette) and Cody Ayotte (Sara).

Family and friends were invited to the Pilon Family Funeral Home & Chapel, 50 John Street North, Arnprior for visitation on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. A Service in celebration of Walter’s life was conducted in the Pilon Family Chapel on Tuesday evening, August 2nd at 8 o’clock. Cremation followed with interment at St. Mark’s Cemetery, Pakenham at a later date. In memory of Walter, a donation to the Arnprior Humane Society would be appreciated by his family.

Her career took her to Renfrew, North Bay, Burns Lake, Kelowna and retired in Surrey. Cremation has taken place and her cremated remains have been scattered at Adams Lake at their summer home for over 50 years.

She was an excellent homemaker and an avid quilter.

Stay In The Bay 5k Run. Event starts and finished at the Constance & Buckham’s Bay Community Centre. Route includes road, trail and beach. 9 a.m. start time, registration opens at 8 a.m. and there will be a runners meeting at 8:45 a.m. Proceeds from donations at sign in go to CBBCA.

Riverfest celebrations at Pinhey’s Point will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 14.
