STAFF Fitzroy Harbour will be buzzing next week as the four-day Harbour Days Festival kicks off Wednesday, June 29.

This year’s Harbour Days lineup has activities to suit all ages.

The first day (Wednesday) is Take Me Out to the Ballgame night, with exciting action from the Fitzroy Harbour Men’s league. Hot dogs and popcorn will be available.

Thursday night is Texas Hold’em Poker in the hall, which is always well attended.

Harbour Days is the place to be on Canada Day Friday, with a barbecue, kids ball hockey tournament, face-painting, red and white kids’ parade, three-pitch tournament, entertainment by the Cowguys at 6:30 p.m., family bingo on the rink at 7:30 p.m. and fireworks

at dusk. A fastball game has been added to the program.

At 2 p.m. Friday, the Ottawa Valley Heat midget team will take on the Fitzroy Men’s League All-stars, followed by the 4 p.m. game with West Carleton Electric playing Quyon Flyers.

Fitzroy Seniors will be hosting carpet bowling in the hall Friday afternoon. Call Chris Dickinson for more information at 613-623-0508 Saturday is another fun-filled day, featuring the 5-km fun run, annual firemen’s breakfast, three-pitch and horseshoe tournaments, Teen Park and silent auction.

A stove left unattended is suspected as being the cause of a fire in West Carleton Friday that killed two dogs.

Ottawa Fire Services report a mobile home and vehicle were fully ablaze when firefighters arrived at 125 Harold Valley Dr. about 4 p.m.

The home is in a trailer park off Grainger Park Road between Dwyer Hill Road and Highway 417.

Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Marc Messier reports crews concentrated initially on protecting neighbouring homes and propane tanks that were at risk.

The home, vehicle and shed were destroyed and a shed of a neighbouring home melted from the extreme heat, but the neighbouring home was saved.

A home in the Spruce Ridge area across Highway 417 from Carp was destroyed by fire Monday morning.

The fire was a few kilometers east of a blaze that destroyed a mobile home three days earlier.

Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Marc Messier said firefighters were called to the blaze at 304 Spruce Ridge Rd., not far from Highway 7, at 8:42 a.m. The roof and the home’s second floor were fully ablaze

when firefighters arrived.

There were some anxious minutes for firefighters and bystanders as the home’s occupant, reported to be Geoff Stevens, was feared to be trapped in the burning home. Firefighters attempted to reach the second floor to see if he was there, but were pushed back by the heavy fire and extreme heat.

Fortunately, the owner, who lived alone in the house, was found outside shortly afterwards uninjured.

The fire destroyed the home, which was up for sale, but fire crews did prevent it from spreading to the nearby

Following on the heels of a decision to change the way Ottawa residents’ garbage is collected, the city is embarking on a plan to outline how waste will be dealt with over the next 30 years.

The city already has “master plans” for areas such as transportation, cycling and parks, so why not garbage and recycling, asked environment committee chair Maria McRae, councillor for River Ward.

A study will take 18 months to complete and the city will have a municipal waste master plan in place by 2014, said Sally McIntyre, the city’s manager environmental programs.

She gave the environment committee a brief overview of the plan on June 16, but more detail will be coming in the fall.

The process is kicking off this week as the city begins to meet with small, targeted groups to address unique concerns. Condo corporations, restaurants, institutional and industrial buildings and other types of groups will be included in those initial discussions, McIntyre said.

A broader consultation will get underway in the fall, when the city will hash out the draft goals of the plan. The city really wants to engage the public in these discussions, McIntyre said, and city staff will be coordinating with other departments to spread information in less-traditional venues such as fun fairs.

By spring, the study should yield some idea of the policies and programs the city will need to adopt in order to achieve those goals.

A plan to implement those policies would be in place by the fall of 2012, McIntyre said.

All options are on the table, McIntyre told city councillors.

Kanata North Coun. Allan Hubley wanted to know if the study could include a “serious discussion” about the option of incinerating garbage.

Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri asked that the study look at his suggestion from a few years ago about including an automated waste that would be built into the underground infrastructure of new communities in order to whisk garbage away without trucks.

“On the record, everything is on the table,” McRae promised.

Row upon row of brightly decorated golf carts lined the turf of Greensmere Golf and Country Club in Carp June 15 for the Babs Harcourt Friendship Memorial Tournament.

Flags flew from countries around the world as participants decorated their carts and themselves to fit this year’s theme – Around the World in 18 Holes.

All funds raised from the tournament will go to the Lucille Broadbent Legacy Fund, part of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. The fund provides income to families battling cancer and the financial burdens that accompany it.

Now in its fourth year, the tournament memorializes Greensmere member Babs Harcourt, who passed away from cancer in 2007.

“Everybody who knew her loved her,” said Shirley-Ann George, an organizer of the event. “She was just the friendliest person, so we do this to remember Babs.”

The costumes and decorations have become a tradition of the tournament, becoming more elaborate every year.

“It’s something that people get really excited about,” George said. “It’s a lot of fun and it just adds a bit of unique character

to the event.”

George wore a lei around her neck to symbolize her chosen country of Hawaii, which was appropriate considering the sunshine beaming down on the course.

The sun was a welcome sight, said event chairwoman Margaret Gillgrass.

“Last year, we were just poured on,” she said. “The turnout is always excellent; people show up no matter what, but this year is going to be hot and dry and warm and wonderful. Good golfing weather and good weather for friends to get together.”

A chipping and putting contest kept the women busy before the official tee-off time at 1 p.m.

PGA golf pro Warren Grant was present to offer putting advice.

Additional fundraising efforts included raffles and a silent auction, showcasing around 60 items fitting the ‘Around the World’ theme.

The buffet-style dinner included international cuisines ranging from Asian stir fry to Canadian lobster and Italian tortellini.

Each year, the event gets bigger and better, said George.

“It’s a growing tournament,” she said. “People who come once end up coming back again.”

A total of 125 women participated in the event and raised over $8,000 for the Lucille Broadbent Legacy Fund.

OPP report a Dunrobin man is facing several criminal charges after failing to stop for police at a RIDE spot check in Arnprior June 7.

At about 10 p.m., OPP Constable Denys Baranovskiy was conducting RIDE spot checks at the intersection of Baskin Drive and Stonehaven Road. A man driving a pickup approached the officers and proceeded through at a high rate of speed, failing to stop when directed by the officer.

The driver sped off, failing to halt at a stop sign and proceeded to ram a private gate at a property on Gilles Grove Road in McNab-Braeside. The driver then fled on foot.

He later attended the Arnprior Detachment of the OPP and admitted driving the vehicle at the time. A 33-year-old Dunrobin resident was charged with dangerous driving, flight from police and mischief under $5,000.

He was released from custody on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew July 27.

The West Carleton Streaker to be more precise.

Section 174 of the Criminal Code provides that everyone who, without lawful excuse, is nude in a public place is guilty of an offence punishable on summary procedure. However, no proceedings shall be commenced under this section without the consent of the Attorney General.

On Thursday police were called to the West Carleton Secondary School after a student ran buck naked through its student filled hallways.

Accounting to eye witness accounts, the first exposure took place in the school parking lot where the student jumped out of a motor vehicle. With only a scarf on, the student ran into the school and exposed his fellow classmates to the naked truth.

For his grand finale, the student ran out of the school and flew out of the parking lot in a waiting Honda Pilot.

With the help of witnesses police were able to quickly crack the case and charged the adult student with public nudity.

DEER COUNTER Week 24 and five more deer collisions have been reported in the rural west districts; one in West Carleton and four in Rideau-Goulbourn.

The total score now stands at 63 to 37, in favor of Rideau-Goulbourn.

BREAK-INS An unidentified suspect(s) entered into a commercial storage building at 217 Cardevco Road in the Carp Business Park sometime during the overnight hours of Monday, June 13 and stole an unknown quantity of scrap metal and a reel of copper wire. The door to the storage facility was secured with a single bolt.

In the same location, a locked commercial van was broken into sometime during the overnight hours on Monday,, June 13 by an unidentified suspect and a large assortment of tools, worth over $5000, was stolen. It is believed

that the suspect who broke into the van was also responsible for the breaking into the commercial storage facility.

On Thursday., June 16 at around 1:30 a.m.., patrol officers and the K9 unit were dispatched to the Len Purcell Community Centre in Constance Bay for a report of a break-and-enter. Information on the call indicated an internal motion sensor had been triggered and the suspects were probably still inside of the building. After conducting a security sweep of the building’s exterior, officers prepared to enter the darkened community centre by loudly announcing their presence to anyone who might still be lurking inside and directing them to give themselves up.

Within seconds of entering the building, the dog, aka officer Blast, picked up on a strong human scent that lingered in the air and followed it to the woman’s washroom.

In the darkness, officer Blast nosed his way around a hockey net and some clothes, and quickly locked in on his targets.

There, crouched on top of the toilet behind door number one was an 18-year-old female from Nepean and hidden behind door number two was a 16-year-old male from MacLaren’s Landing.

IMPAIRED CHARGES A 26-year-old driver from Rideau-Goulbourn was charged with impaired driving and over 80 after he drove his truck into a hydro pole guy-wire and passed out behind the wheel in the 1200 block of Bayview Drive in Constance Bay June 12.

It was shortly after 11 p.m. when police were dispatched to a single motor vehicle accident on Bayview Drive.

On investigation it was discovered that the intoxicated driver crashed through a mailbox and drove over the front lawn before coming to rest against a hydro pole guy-wire.

On further investigation, it was determined that the same driver was involved in an earlier collision in the 300 Bayview Drive area where he plowed his white pickup truck through a six-foot high PVC fence. In that particular incident the driver remained conscious and left the scene without reporting it to police.

With a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.257, the driver was charged and held for Show Cause. To put things in perspective, in Canada the maximum legal BAC for fully licensed drivers is 0.08.

INTOXICATED TEEN An 18-year-old male was charged under the Ontario Liquor Licence Act for being drunk in a public place and supplying alcohol to a minor after patrol officers happened upon two teens hanging out at the skateboard park at the Constance Bay Community Centre shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday, June 10.

While the 18-year-old male staggered about the skateboard park, his 15-year-old girlfriend laid on the ground convulsing.

After paramedics assessed the female for alcohol poisoning, she was transported to her Constance Bay home and turned over to her very disappointed mother.

As the car pulled away from the following patrol car, it continued to fishtail back and forth along the roadway.

After forming reasonable grounds for the offence, the officer activated his lights and sirens and conducted a traffic stop.

Antique furniture enthusiasts and woodworking wannabes will want to nail this Sunday, June 26 event to their calendars.

Pinhey’s Point will be offering a heritage woodworking workshop lead by an expert craftsman. The historic site will host its second craft workshop this Sunday, designed specifically for adults.

The program will provide visitors with the opportunity to experience hands-on fun, while learning centuries-old woodworking techniques.

Participants are welcome to tour the Georgian-style stone house, turned heritage museum, where those fond of furniture will appreciate the unique period pieces that decorate the home of early settler Hamnett Pinhey. Who

knows? You may be inspired to start building your own collection of heirloom furnishings.

Every program within the Adult Workshop Series will be held on the last Sunday of every month this summer. Join in at each event to learn a variety of different crafting techniques including photography, flower arranging, and the Victorian art of paper-quilling.

Pinhey’s Point is located at 270 Pinhey’s Point Rd, in Dunrobin, off of Sixth Line Road.

Cost is $10 per person, ages 16 and over. Event runs from 1 to 3 p.m.

Yet another good reason to head for the lake Next week the fighting will start – the people who want to go off to the cottage for Canada Day against the people who want to stay in town and see Will and Kate.

There are other subgroups, the people who want to stay in town to see the jazz festival and the people who want to stay in town for the fireworks, but that’s quite a different matter.

You might think this upcoming battle is a battle of the sexes – the women wanting to see the royal couple and the men wanting to go fix the dock – but that’s oldfashioned stereotyped thinking. It’s more complicated than that. Back in April there were an awful lot of people, both male and female, who got up at five in the morning to watch the royal wedding on TV. Around that time, I remarked casually to a group of like-minded people that it was crazy and perhaps even un-Canadian of the CBC to send Peter Mansbridge over to London to cover the wedding just three days before a Canadian federal election.

Turns out that many people were less likeminded than I thought. There was much leaping to the defence of the CBC and defending of the historical importance of the royal wedding.

Anyway, the whole argument will now start up again. Some people will say that the way to go about being a good Canadian on Canada Day is to go to a lake and do something with a canoe or a tree. In doing so we are honouring our ancestors and our heritage.

Others will argue that the Crown is part of what makes Canada special and that we should salute it in person whenever the opportunity arises. Not all of these people are old codgers. Now, it’s true that the motorcade isn’t going to stop for them, nor will they be able to get close enough to salute, but it’s the thought that counts.

rapidly growing number of Canadians whose heritage includes neither lakes and canoes nor royal couples from England.

If you’re in that group, you might be very confused by it all, and should maybe just hang out at the jazz festival, where neither God Save the Queen nor O Canada is likely to be played.

Mind you, you might hear the CF-18s and the 21 guns.

One of the reasons the monarchy has survived so long in this country is that people tend to be rather good-natured about it. It helps that most of our royal visitors in recent times have been rather pleasant and it is difficult even for a committed republican to direct the necessary amount of outrage against them.

Will and Kate, too, seem quite nice. If you want to work up a case against a royal visit it is necessary to search for some other reason. The only one that springs to mind is that having a princess in our midst might encourage more of our Canadian little girls to want to be princesses.

Feminists and other sensible people have been worrying about the princess phenomenon for some time now – parents dressing their daughters up in frilly

pink costumes, sometimes even with little crowns and tiaras. It is the result of a marketing ploy some people blame on the Disney empire. Whoever is at fault, it isn’t doing much to persuade our daughters to become doctors, engineers, soldiers, hockey players or any of the things they can be that don’t involve marrying princes.

It’s unlikely that Kate, when she gets to Ottawa, will be wearing a crown or anything frilly and pink, but you can never be too careful, which is why heading for the lake isn’t such a bad idea.

Everybody knows you can’t be a princess and climb a tree at the same time.

To the editor: The West Carleton Health Access Foundation would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the Rural Root Theatre for donating the proceeds from opening night of their recent performance to the Foundation.

From our observations, as with the Red Shouldered Hawk, the Barred has not nested in the Grove for several years, so this young Barred sighted this week is testament to a successful breeding her in Arnprior, after a long absence.

Each and every one of us are in this world in order to do our share, in making this a better community, a better Canada and a better world to appease our Lord and Saviour.

Many are asking for democratic reform. What is happening to social justice? Instead of loving thy neighbour, envy has become popular; dare we say “hatred is lurking in the shadows.”

For starters, two things we need are good listeners, because the majority only hear what they want to hear.

Poor listeners are excellent candidates for brainwashing. The person in the chair of any meeting can do so much to make a meeting work well. A tactful chairman can make a

meeting a success or a failure.

How many people have served their term on a board and never knew or cared if there was a constitution in place.

The constitution should be reviewed more often, and a copy should be kept on the table at every meeting and it should be read and understood prior to agreeing to sit on any board. If you don’t have your house in order at the grassroots level, is that not the reason that so much corruption exists at higher levels?

What I have observed lately greatly concerns me.

Compassion in the service of care, Jamie MacDougall and the Order of Canada

Jamie MacDougall is the founder and Director of The Ottawa Hospital’s Institute for Rehabilitation Research and Development. He grew up in Overbrook, a brisk run from the General Campus. He went to high school at Lisgar, beside City Hall.

“You immediately think of all the people that made it possible, especially those with disabilities who inspired me. It is validation for thousands of people,” says MacDougall of the honour.

Deafness and disability is personal for MacDougall. His parents, Peter and Gladys, were both deaf. His daughter, Paige, suffered a serious head injury at age 17, bringing his awareness of disabilities even closer to home.

“People with disabilities have greater potential than we realize,” says MacDougall. “They have to overcome a lot of stereotypes…Just like everyone else, they aspire to realize their full potential.”

Rusty Wendt, the head Carleton University’s Department of Psychology, understood this calling early on, convincing McDougall to take a summer job working with deaf parents seeking better means to communicate with their hearing children.

MacDougall left Carleton for McGill, getting his Masters and PhD in Clinical Psychology, studying the psychological impact of sensory deprivation and the link between deafness and literacy. Moving to Newfoundland’s Memorial University, he studied the impact of resettlement on cognitive development in children. From there, he went on to Rochester New York’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Then, back to McGill, where he spent 40 years teaching in the area of deafness and disability, and lead the Mackay Centre for Deaf and Disabled Children.

His research is rooted in the everyday challenges faced by the Deaf and persons with disability. “Whether its children or adults,” says MacDougall, “I’ve been touched by the courage of extraordinary people.” Those people, in turn, have enabled valuable research.

“The strength of clinically driven research is that it is both practical and sophisticated because of the problems it allows us to explore”.

During one particularly complex case with a deaf Inuk in Nunavut who was said to have no language, MacDougall discovered the Inuit had their own sign language – Inuit Sign Language.

His ability to extend clinical work beyond the hospital into the real world sets MacDougall apart.

Working with advocacy groups such as the Canadian Hearing Society and the Canadian Association of the Deaf, he fought to ensure people with disabilities enjoy the full protection of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

His example brings The Ottawa Hospital a step closer to its vision of providing each patient with the world class care, exceptional service and compassion we would want for our loved ones.

Waste Management of Canada Corporation Environmental Assessment for a New Landfill Footprint at the West Carleton Environmental Centre Existing Conditions & Evaluation Criteria Available July 4th The Project Waste Management of Canada Corporation (WM) is undertaking an Environmental Assessment (EA) seeking approval for a new landfill footprint at the existing Ottawa Waste Management Facility (Ottawa WMF). The new landfill footprint will be one component of the proposed West Carleton Environmental Centre (WCEC), an integrated waste management facility that will include: • A new landfill footprint for disposal of residual waste materials; • Waste diversion and recycling operations; • Composting operations; • Renewable energy facilities; and, • Recreational lands for community uses.

The Environmental Assessment The new landfill footprint is the only component of the WCEC that requires EA approval under the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). The proposed location of the WCEC and the new landfill footprint component is within the City of Ottawa in the area shown on the adjacent map. The purpose of the EA is to study the potential environmental effects (positive or negative) of the proposed new landfill footprint. Key components of an EA include consultation with government agencies and the public; consideration and evaluation of alternatives; and, the management of potential environmental effects. Conducting an EA promotes good environmental planning before decisions are made about a proposal.

Get Involved In Phase I and Phase II of the EA Process, the public was consulted regarding existing conditions, evaluation methodology, and evaluation criteria and indicators.

The following reports will be available for public review beginning July 4th: • Existing Conditions and • Evaluation Methodology, Criteria, and Indicators.

These reports can be accessed in two ways: • Electronic versions are available under the “Resources” tab on the project website (http://wcec.wm.com) and • A hard copy version is available for in-person viewing at the WM Ottawa Hauling Office – 254 Westbrook Road.

Those wanting to review the materials in person are asked to contact one of the individuals noted below to arrange for a time to view the materials.

Open Houses will be scheduled to take place in September to provide a summary of the existing environmental conditions; present the methodology for the comparative evaluation of the proposed alternative new landfill footprints; and to identify the preferred new landfill footprint. Notification of specific dates, times and locations for the Open Houses will be provided to the public through advertisement, direct mail, and email, as done previously for other Open Houses in the EA Process. Please check the project website for updates regarding the public consultation for the EA process.

The return of the body invaders MICHAEL RUNTZ Nature’s Way

Creatures that live inside human bodies, tunnelling through the skin and erupting into view while their human hosts are still alive - science fiction movies certainly seem imaginative.

While one might wish to credit the writer of the horrendous script for his creativity, in reality the idea was stolen from a much more imaginative source.

The movie Alien is based on real natural history events, many of which occur right in your backyard.

Many kinds of wasps and flies live this lifestyle. As larvae, they invade the bodies of other animals where they devour the insides of their host while it is living.

They only emerge from its body when transforming to the adult stage.

How these “aliens” get inside is a fascinating tale. Some parasitoids (unlike parasites, these invaders always kill their host) lay their miniscule eggs on leaves.

After being inadvertently swallowed by a hungry caterpillar munching the plant, the eggs hatch inside its gut.

Others lay their eggs on the creature.

Still others, including all of the wasp parasitoids, inject their eggs into the animal. Some parasitoids paralyze their prey and burrow them in the ground with their eggs.

Now, animals have an immune system that does not appreciate intruders and normally foreign objects are attacked by blood cells. But the invaders are clever.

Along with the eggs they inject chemicals that shut down the host’s immune system so their larvae can devour its

flesh with impunity.

My favourite body invader is a very large ichneumon wasp, Megarhyssa. If you have seen one of these beauties you may have run for cover because it seems to carry a stinger longer than its body.

Actually, it is not a stinger but a drill that is used to access larvae of Horntails that lay hidden in trees. The wasp finds a Horntail by tapping its antennae over the bark looking for the odours of fungus that the adult Horntail injected near its egg. Horntail larvae eat the fungus as it grows in the chamber it chews in the wood.

It is also thought the wasp has vibration sensors in its feet for detecting the target as it chews.

Once a Horntail is detected, the wasp drills into the wood. This is no easy task for the drill is far too long.

First it must be withdrawn into the wasp’s final body part, the metasoma.

This is raised into the air and inflates like a balloon.

Inside the sac, the base of the drill and two long filaments that guide it can be seen as they coil up. When the drill is under the body perpendicular to the tree, it releases chemicals that dissolve wood fibres.

Slowly the drill works its way through the wood to the Horntail, which is paralyzed with venom as an egg is laid into it.

Watch for these body invaders all summer long. But unlike the movie Alien, the unwilling host has no actor double and ends up quite dead.

THE OTTAWA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION In October 2009, Rhea Ferguson’s father, Bill, was diagnosed with esophageal gastric cancer at age 59.

After successfully undergoing treatment at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, the family received some devastating news – the cancer was back, and this time, it was inoperable.

Ferguson also knows more about the need for cancer research than the average person. She recently completed her Master’s degree in cancer epidemiology at McGill University, has worked with cancer researcher Dr. John Bell at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and is currently working as a database manager for the Hospital’s ovarian cancer bank.

“Cancer research has always been a big passion for me,” said the 26-year-old Ottawa native.

“There’s a history of cancer in my family. I lost all my grandparents to it.”

Ferguson, who is riding as a member of the Cancer Trailblazers, the OHRI Cancer Centre team, said she reached her fundraising goal of $1,500 in just two weeks.

“People are so generous,” she said. “Everyone knows someone who is affected by the disease.

“It would be amazing to have another treatment option that is… not so hard on the body,” she said. “The research needs to continue.”

With her father’s health rapidly declining, she said she will be thinking about him when she does the ride on Sept. 10.

“I’m hoping to be able to tell him about it,” she said.

The tractor pull season begins in earnest this Saturday, June 25 in Antrim.

Despite unfounded rumours about its potential demise, the 16th annual Kinburn Tractor Pull and Truck Demonstration will be alive and kicking, make that pulling, at the Antrim Flea Market at 3636 Highway 17 in Kinburn.

There will be more than $2,000 in prizes for competitors at the popular family event organized by the Kinburn Community Association.

The Antrim Flea Market is

an ideal location, as it is spacious, central and close to Highway 417. It is also a natural place to put trucks in the spotlight, being the former Antrim Truck Stop.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. with all the excitement starting at 11 a.m. The entry fee is $8 per pull, with several classes available from antique to farm and lawn tractors.

The entry fee is $6, with youth 12 and under free.

Proceeds go to the Kinburn Community Association for upkeep of its community centre and other initiatives.

Thomas has also been helped in his education from Arnprior with the “Stan Ball Memorial Scholarship” for athletics and the M. Sullivan & Son’s “Bonus” Awards for education.

Thomas will be returning to Guelph in the fall for his Masters Degree & Research in Cattle Industry under the direction of Dean Dr. Robert Gordon Scholarship provided by the Canadian Cattleman’s Association.

Our dad lived and loved his life and everyone in it to the fullest. Between the dashes are full of his life experiences. We suspect he is now fishing in that hidden fishing hole with Dave.

Ablene Bridgeman (née Opgarden) With strength and dignity surrounded by family at Arnprior Memorial Hospital on Monday June 13, 2011 at the age of 84. Ablene was born in Calgary and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta. As the devoted lifetime friend and companion of her military husband, she lived in many locations throughout Canada and Europe before settling in Vernon, BC. They moved to Arnprior in 2005 to be closer to family. Predeceased by husband Glen (2008), Abbey leaves daughter Valerie (Richard Vezeau) and son Stuart (Holly), grandchildren Nigel Vezeau (Sarah Marshall), Erica Vezeau, and Ryan and Andrew Bridgeman. The lights of her life were great granddaughters Rowan and Luka Vezeau. She will be missed by sisters June Schill (John) and Bernice Forster (Jack), both of Vancouver, BC. Interment will take place at Beechwood Cemetery’s National Military Cemetery in Ottawa, on June 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.

Webber explains that the loss of forest in the area has prompted her to hold the walk. “Developers will continue clear cutting in July. I am volunteering to lead a hike into the forest while the major part is still intact.”

She advises participants to dress appropriately to hike rocky trails, bring a bag lunch and meet at the RIM parking lot on

She says to replace an old growth forest with 3,500 houses and twice that number of cars in the capital city of Canada is not only climate change denial, but disregard for the health of all residents.

Webber has run for the last two winters ‘Families in Nature’ for the Eco-wellness Centre on the Carp Ridge.

She is really impressed by even the youngest children and their excitement over discoveries they make at in the forest, she says.
