INFRASTRUCTURE Cities are increasingly trying to forge public-private deals to fund their infrastructure.

The windstorm that ravaged the city on July 17 wreaked particular havoc on Marshall Bay, where multiple cottages and cars were damaged due to fallen trees. Residents of the small privately-owned area along the Ottawa River are seeking aid from the federal government to pay for the damage inflicted on their property. West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry and Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Gordon O’Connor toured the area on Tuesday, July 19 to assess the damage. “It’s devastating,” El-Chantiry said. “It’s heartbreaking to see some of these 200-year-old trees torn down, snapped like a toothpick.” It costs between $750 to $1,000 to remove a large tree like the scores that have fallen in Marshall Bay. “The challenge here is that some people have insurance and some don’t,” O’Connor said. “I’ve scratched my head to figure out how the federal government can get involved, but it’s not likely.” Only when both the city and the province declare a state of emergency will the government step in to provide monetary assistance. This was the case during the recent flooding in Manitoba and the fires raging in northern Ontario. But neither El-Chantiry or O’Connor believed that a state of emergency will be declared because of the windstorm.
