SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW

A successful workshop bringing together people of all ages from the community was exactly what Heidi Weiler was hoping and planning for. And that’s exactly what happened at the knitting workshop on Jan. 15 As the coordinator for the Anglican Parish of Huntley’s free “Sharing Wisdom Across the Ages” program, she was tasked with giving Carp residents events that gave more seniors in the community an opportunity to pass along some of their experience and wisdom to younger residents. This knitting workshop was the last in this series of events. “Every spot was filled,” said Heidi. “Twenty seven new knitters of all ages spent an afternoon with 18 experienced mentors where they learned the basics of knitting and shared stories and experiences. It was exactly what we hoped for. The only disappointment was having to turn away quite a few people who wanted to register for the event since we had filled all the spots.” Participants received a free starter kit of wool and needles and volunteers from two local clubs, the West Carleton Country Knitters and the Carp Social Knitwork, as well as several home knitters helped them learn the basic stitches. It was a very “hands on” experience that gave the group in the hall at St. James Church in Carp lots of opportunity to mix and chat with participants from age 10 right up to 80 years of age. They will all return on Feb. 5 for a follow-up event where they will demonstrate the success of their knitting projects with the mentors who helped get them started.
