The second annual Shinny with the Big Boys welcomed a couple of special guests all the way from New Zealand.

Brothers Jack and Kyle Swift were visiting their dad Blake’s hometown of Ottawa all the way from down under on Jan. 22. They participated in the Huntley Community Association event that saw former junior and European professional players take on each other and then welcome little players on the ice with them.

The Swift boys play hockey at their city’s only rink.

“It’s growing,” Jack said. “I’d say it’s growing slowly, but it is growing.”

The challenge is the cost of hockey equipment. The boys tend to stock up when in Canada, where their father won a junior title with the Arnprior Packers in 1979. It is mostly expat Canadians and their kids who take up the sport in their city.

Carp corridor BIA is to focus on property assessments JESSICA CUNHA

The Carp Road Corridor Business Improvement Area had a successful past year and is prepared to tackle new challenges in 2017.

Roddy Bolivar, executive director, said the group will focus on area promotion, a report on bringing water services and transit to the corridor, as well as concentrate on property assessments this year.

“We had a really good year,” he said during the BIA’s annual general meeting on Jan. 17. “This year it’s going to be interesting in the corridor.”

Glenn Lucas, a paralegal with Property Tax Review Services and a West Carleton resident, spoke about what businesses can do to address property assessment issues.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is an independent, not-for-profit corporation.

It’s funded by all municipalities in Ontario and assesses properties every four years.

Lucas worked on a group appeal for more than 580 industry properties across the province. The process took six years to resolve. In the end it was determined that MPAC had over-assessed some of the properties by seven times, he said.

“You can’t just simply take MPAC at their word,” Lucas said. “On this corridor there’s been a tremendous percentage of error. ... In 2012, the average error was 40 per cent.”

The errors, he said, were mostly attributed to assessments based on models from the average industrial park, which are often serviced municipally, such as water.

“It’s why it’s wacky here,” said Lucas.

The BIA is going to focus on commercial property assessments this year, said Bolivar.

“The idea is to dig into this a little deeper,” he said, adding the BIA could look at heading an area appeal or could provide information to property owners individually.

Projections submitted to the city previously by the BIA haven’t been accepted, said Bolivar, so the BIA is “retaining a professional engineer to calculate the cost of bringing the water in.”

The cost for the consultant raised the BIA’s budget this year to $129,000, up from $115,000 in previous years.

The additional $14,000 needed for the professional study will come from the BIA’s reserve funds.

“This is something that has to be done,” said Jim Gorman, treasurer. “We want to see exactly what that cost is going to be.”

Members voted and approved the budget.

“In the end (it was) not good news that we’re going to be paying but the city did a great job on consulting,” said Bolivar. “With the new stormwater tax, what we’re going to do in the spring is inventory clear evidence of inadequate drainage. Now that the city is going to be collecting directly from us for stormwater, we’ll go and say ‘how about getting some crews out to fix these problems?’”

Members are constantly telling us that to get their low wage employees out to work is a challenge in the corridor.

this year.

Hydro is another issue that’s been raised, he said, adding Hydro One is addressing reliability by installing new poles and transformers in the area.

“After many meetings, including talking to the hydro one ombudsperson, there’s nothing we’re going to do about cost but certainly the reliability issue, making sure there’s a reasonable level of service in the area (is a priority),” Bolivar said.

Other projects completed in 2016 included the city’s vacant land study, of which the Carp Road corridor was identified as having “well positioned vacant land,” he said, and a new city policy for septic systems, which allows for greater permissions and flexibility for site plans and subdivisions.

The BIA board has one vacancy following the resignation of Domenic Santaguida.

Board member Wayne French said he would like to see more diversity on the board, which is currently all male.

The Ottawa Police Service says its new front line deployment model launched Jan. 23 will improve how the department serves Ottawa’s communities, but residents were cautiously optimistic at best in an information session on Jan. 16.

About 50 people gathered at the Nepean Sportsplex for the first of four meetings across the city meant to prepare the public for the last major restructuring within the force as part of its new service initiative.

The changes — which include pooling patrol officers into one front line department, reducing the number of community police officers serving the city and redefining patrol zones — should make moving resources across the city easier, streamline the reporting process for residents and generally make policing in Ottawa more efficient.

“From a policing perspective, this is a really exciting time,” said Jill Skinner, deputy chief of front line operations. “Anybody that’s been involved in working with the city with our police service (knows) we haven’t had this big of a change since 1995, when we amalgamated.”

Skinner said using resources — in other words sworn uniformed officers — efficiently is becoming more important as police face budget constraints, city growth and new challenges like high-tech crime, and increased human trafficking.

On top of those new pressures, she said, police continue to be seen as the catch-all for less serious neighbourhood disputes.

“We’re really the go-to agency,” Skinner said. “After four o’clock and on weekends, if you don’t know who to call and you’ve got a problem, people call the police. We can not be all things to all people anymore, so we need to do a better job of looking after the things we are responsible for.”

The old model spread Ottawa’s 800 front line officers across three departments with different command structures and an unequal division of duties.

Under the new model, frontline officers will operate within one department, with a more balanced division of duties, like mobile response, proactive policing, and community engagement.

Another result of the restructuring will be to reduce the number of community police officers serving different areas of the city to 10 from 15. The remaining 10 officers will serve neighbourhoods in east, west and central regions of the city, with a sergeant assigned to each region for additional support. They will also cover larger areas than before. Skinner said the reduction in community police officers should be offset by the increase in officers trained in a wider variety of front-line duties who can be dispatched to different areas of the city.

“My vision for this is actually having 1,200 community police officers,” she said. “We want everybody thinking like a community police officer; and that’s what we’re going to get to, but it’s going to take some time.”

Other service improvements include more consistent front desk times for client services, with the front desks at the Elgin Street, Huntmar Drive, and St Joseph Boulevard stations operating from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., seven days a week.

While front desks will continue to operate collision-reporting centres, take police reports and accept background checks, residents can now also report a wider variety of crimes and other incidents online.

COMMUNITY CONCERNS

Skinner cautioned residents at the Jan. 16 information session not to expect individual community police officers to be long-term fixtures. She cited job turnover as the main factor determining how long an officer would remain with a particular community.

“I think it’s important for everyone to know that we are a pretty mobile organization and people move,” she said. “They change. That’s the one thing about having sworn officers fulfil some of these roles, is you probably only have them between two and four years before they move through and they go to another job.”

To try and ensure a stable relationship between police and communities in the face of this turnover, Skinner said sergeants overseeing each of the city’s three regions would work on a longer-term basis.

Their role, Skinner said, will be to provide consistency for

neighbourhoods as officers leave and are replaced.

Keith Egli argued that with a shorter turnover time and fewer community police officers serving his ward, residents would probably struggle to maintain the same level of familiarity with officers under the new model than under the old one.

“Currently we have three different community police officers that service parts of the ward, and as I understand the new system there will be one,” he said.

“The importance of the current system, I think, is it really puts a face on the police officer.

So it turns it from the police force, sort of a faceless entity, to someone they know, someone they trust and someone they can work with.”

Egli wasn’t sold on the prospect of the city’s 800 front-line officers adapting to policing on a community level either.

“Front-line officers will have different training and therefore be able address more of the community policing aspect of things, I’m a little skeptical,” he said. Several residents and community leaders from the city’s south end turned out for the meeting. Craig Searle, president of the Riverside Park Community and Recreation Association, said he feels that the community advisory group helping guide police throughout the restructuring isn’t as representative as police describe it.

The community advisory group is made up of 29 people from across the city, including members of community associations, health, housing and cultural organizations, mental health and family services, the Ottawa Police Services Board, school boards and more. It’s designed to provide diverse community stakeholders with opportunities to have their interests represented. Membership in the group was determined by community police officers who nominated partner organizations they were familiar with, Skinner said.

“I think what we’re hearing is that the selection of this group was rather arbitrary,” Searle said. “I’m the president of the Riverside Park Community Association and I’ve never heard of it.”

Skinner said the methodology was the best one the police service had at the time.

Those at an upcoming evening of high-flying feats and fundraising in support of cystic fibrosis research and care will be hearing about the courageous journey of the Hanna family of Kinburn.

It was last April when daughter Kathleen Hanna, then 21 years old, received a double lung transplant at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital.

Leading up to the transplant surgery, she was in a wheelchair with a 24-hour oxygen supply and very little lung capacity.

Now, thanks to the transplant, Kathleen came back home to Kinburn last August with the wheelchair gone and vastly increased lung capacity.

Her story and that of her family and supportive community will be told at this Feb. 25 gala evening hosted

by Cystic Fibrosis Canada and featuring the Cirque Carpe Diem which will perform mesmerizing feats of high flying gymnastics and routines.

In addition, there will be a fourcourse meal, a silent auction and lots Scott Campbell photo of fellowship and friendship.

All of the funds will be going to Kathleen Hanna of Kinburn received a double lung transplant at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital last April after living with cystic fibrosis since she was about four months old. help fund cystic fibrosis research and care.

Ward 5 West Carleton-March “Be Well” Survey – Your health & well-being matters Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre (WOCRC) invites you to join them in exploring a snapshot of the health and well-being of people living in the far-west and rural communities. The “Be Well” survey (www.surveymonkey.com/r/WOCRC), developed by the Association of Ontario Health Centres, aims to capture overall quality of life indicators derived from the Canadian Index of Well-being. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and all information is kept strictly confidential. With this survey data, WOCRC aims to better understand the well-being needs of the farwest and rural communities, while making comparisons with communities across the city, province and country.

Participation ends March 8, 2017. WOCRC will share their community well-being report at a public forum later this year. Please share this survey far and wide!

CF fundraiser with Cirque Carpe Diem Continued from page 6

To be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Ottawa Conference and Events Centre, tickets are being sold for $150 each. A table of ten costs $1,300.

Those at this gala fundraiser will hear how Kathleen Hanna of Kinburn moved with family to Toronto in midFebruary last year in order to be close to St. Michael’s Hospital so that she could be there quickly once lungs had become available for her.

It was on April 6 that Kathleen received her double lung transplant. She was able to return home last August after staying in Toronto for medical follow-ups to ensure that there would be no rejection of the lung.

Now 22 years old, Kathleen is being closely monitored for two years following the transplant to ensure that there is no rejection of the donated lungs. Indeed, she will be monitored for the rest of her life.

She will return to Toronto once a year for check ups and while at home, she is one daily anti-rejection drugs.

Kathleen has been dealing with cystic fibrosis since she was about four months old. She was able to managed her symptoms in her younger years, even playing competitive soccer. However, about the age of 16, things started to get worse for her. She experienced frequent hospitalizations, spending most of five years in and out of hospital.

Her lung capacity was disappearing.

And yet, despite these health challenges, Kathleen was taking medical transcriptionist courses at Algonquin College before her transplant.

The community rallied behind the Hanna family, with several fundraisers held to raise funds to help the family with the costs related to the move to Toronto so that Kathleen could be closer to the hospital where the transplant took place.

There was a Team Hanna Day on Family Day last February at the Kinburn Community Centre. Other community fundraising initiatives included an online auction and fundraiser at the Cheshire Cat Pub, a fundraiser at the Irish Hills Golf and Country Club.

Julie and Ken Hanna have three children: Kathleen, her brother Clayton, 20, who also has cystic fibrosis, and her sister Emily, 16, who has not been affected by cystic fibrosis. The family has experienced all the typical activities of a family, running to hockey arenas, soccer fields, school functions, part time jobs and extracurricular activities. But unfortunately the family’s experience with cystic fibrosis has made the family’s life far from typical. Those at the Feb. 25 fundraising gala will hear all about the family’s courageous journey over the years and its hopes for a brighter future for all those suffering with cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic diseased that affects children and young adults for which there currently is no cure.

That’s one of the reasons for this Feb. 25 fundraiser – to help fund the research that will find that cure.

Cystic fibrosis mainly affects the digestive system and the lungs.

This Feb. 25 fundraiser is featuring Cirque Carpe Diem, a circus-oriented troupe of acrobats, aerial artists and more who will provide a mindblowing performance, all wrapped up in the magic and wonder of circus. Cirque Carpe Diem is a Montreal-based entertainment company, founded in 2006.

There is some similarity between those who battle cystic fibrosis every day and performing acrobats and aerial artists. A person with cystic fibrosis has to jump through hoops every day just to do activities that people take for granted, like eating and breathing.

You can help families like the Hanna’s who are living with the impact of cystic fibrosis in their lives certainly by supporting this upcoming Feb. 25 fundraiser but also by considering registering as an organ donor. The Hanna family is forever grateful to the donor family whose unselfish gift of lungs have made such a difference in Kathleen’s life. But more donors are always needed. Consider becoming one.

MP’s words disappointing

H

aving a sitting prime minister visit your community is a great source of pride for residents and indeed can become the stuff of historical lore. A visit by Prime Minister John A. Macdonald to Stittsville over 125 years ago is still referenced in local histories for that community.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s visit to Manotick on Jan. 12 where he visited the volunteer-run Miller’s Oven restaurant as the initial stop on a cross-country tour to listen to Canadians was quite a coup for the community.

And in 125 years, it might still be a prominent footnote in Manotick’s story – who knows.

While such visits do have a political purpose underlying them, at least from a community perspective they are far from political. They are something of a recognition of the community and its residents as the leader of the country is coming to visit.

At Miller’s Oven, excitement ran deep for the visit.

And you would expect that this excitement would spread to the local MP, Pierre Poilievre. He represents a different political party but surely there are situations and occasions where political differences should

be put on the back burner.

This was a big day for the community of Manotick – everyone, including those with different political viewpoints, should have been celebrating having a prime minister pay a visit to the community.

MP Poilievre was not at Miller’s Oven for the visit but he issued a statement that morning. It read: “I welcome prime minister Justin Trudeau to the historic village of Manotick, Ontario. “ So far, so good. And then politics followed: “The best way he can improve life for people in Manotick and everywhere else is to discipline his out-of-control deficit spending and lower taxes so small businesses can afford to hire and pay more to Canadian workers. Hopefully, he will get that message and get it done.”

Now this may be a valid viewpoint or not, depending on your political beliefs. And politics has a place in Canadian and indeed Manotick life. No denying that.

But there’s a place and time for everything and MP Poilievre’s political statement on an occasion when he should have been welcoming the prime minister and extolling the community’s attractions and features is, to say the least, disappointing.

School boards need to look at more than numbers

chools are too important to be left to school boards.

In particular, the survival of individual schools. A number of elementary schools are in danger of being closed in the city’s west end. Some high schools with a long history are also at risk. Anybody who has followed the issue over the years knows that the school boards use a different logic than ordinary people and school board logic does not benefit the community.

School boards think of budgets.

Their mission, as they see it, is to protect the taxpayer’s money. Other considerations, the considerations that affect the daily lives of students and their parents, are secondary.

To be fair, the boards are hamstrung by the provincial government and various formulae that have drawn up by experts. The province is also important in funding. Nevertheless,

School boards also think in terms of programs. There are formulae at work here too. Such and such and program can’t be offered unless a school has such and such a number of students. No one asks why this is, but if they did, the answer would be “because.”

“student space” there is a student and for every student there is parent or two. And for every family there is a neighbourhood, for which the presence of a school is vital. More and more you wonder if the boards think in those terms.

In deciding whether or not to close a school, it helps to know what a school is. For a school board, a school is a budget item, a sum of student spaces which is tasked with the delivery of certain programs.

For students and parents a school is an important part of a neighbourhood. It has programs, yes, but it also has buildings and facilities that are used by everyone. It is a gathering place, a hub for neighbourhood activity.

MPP contends more respectful approach by province to personal property rights needed To the editor: Imagine if the value of your property suddenly dropped by 20 per cent.

How would you and your family react?

Unfortunately for thousands of Ontario residents, that is exactly what is about to happen.

The Liberal government has decided to regulate all ‘non-provincially significant’ wetlands across the province of Ontario.

In the past, only wetlands deemed ‘provincially significant’ have been the government’s focus.

Because of this change, thousands of Ontario residents may no longer be able to build a deck in their backyard or finish their fence to keep their dogs safe.

Families that are part way through a renovation may have to stop the project altogether, because their backyard just happens to include, or to be near to, what the province calls a nonprofincially significant’ wetland’.

In any other context, taking or restricting your private property in this arbitrary manner would be cause for outrage.

And yet the Liberal government’s decision and the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority’s plan to enforce it is being met with little media attention.

But it gets worse. The MVCA does not even indicate the potential cost to the families who own the property and of course to the government.

There is no commentary on whether municipalities can afford it, or whether they will need to raise taxes and fees on families and businesses to compensate.

Personal property rights are not mentioned once in the MVCA’s guiding documents, even after the courts ruled that this type of government overreach was illegal and improper.

Everyone supports conserving our great lands, protecting our important waterways, and of course taking care of the animals that live in our forests.

But it’s time to start thinking equally about the impact that theese policies have on the families who own the affected land in the first place; how these policies might reduce their property value or perhaps make it worthless overnight.

It’s time that the government take a more respectful approach to personal property rights.

‘Coldest Night of the Year’ walk in support of Chrysalis House

It’s cold, especially in February and so, as Canadians, what better time to go for a walk!

And also as Canadians, what better time to participate in an event that raises money for and awareness about the abused, the hungry, the homeless and the hurting.

That’s what is happening on Saturday, Feb. 25 when the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre is hosting a “Coldest Night of the Year” fundraising walk in support of Chrysalis House. The walk is also an opportunity to become more aware about the hungry, the homeless and the hurting as you get to experience what they experience on a daily basis.

Cap-and-trade boondoggle!

I hope everyone had a calm and restful Christmas and happy new year, because it looks like 2017 is off to a rough start.

The Government’s cap-and-trade tax went into effect on the 1st of January.

The tax is basically a scheme to make everyone pay for carbon dioxide emissions.

Fuel prices have already gone up. Gas at most pumps was up to $1.16 a litre. The cost of heating your home is going up by about $7 a month, and this is on top of the already ridiculously high cost of hydro.

The cost of everything else is going up too.

Almost all products in Canada are shipped to a store or to your doorstep by trucks. So if the cost of gas goes up, the cost of shipping does too. Business have to pass those costs on to their customers. This is why the Auditor-General of Ontario estimated that over the next two years households will pay almost $300 more indirect costs everything.

These higher costs are going to hurt the poor most, and enrich the government by about $2 billion a year. The cap-and-trade tax is not going to be offset by reductions in any of our other taxes. So as we all get poorer, the government will get richer.

Saving Rideau High School goes beyond dollars and cents

R

ideau High School seems to be on death row every second year. Understandably, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) has some tough decisions to make. Declining enrolment in some schools and overcrowding in others has forced the board’s hand.

Despite Rideau’s first-class English as a second language program, declining enrolment from middle-class Canadians in Overbrook, Vanier and Manor Park means the institution doesn’t always have the same number of vocal advocates as, say, Colonel By, which is also being considered in the reorganization. The latter offers an international baccalaureate program, which draws students from across the city.

Plus, it’s smack in the middle of a wealthy community of supporters. Let’s be honest — money talks. And it’s one thing that Rideau is lacking, as local middle class residents frequently

The OCDSB’s Lisgar Collegiate is a favourite for the upper crust English in Vanier and Manor Park, as is Immaculata, the Catholic high school bordering the canal, for which most residents are zoned.

There are a number of high profile community leaders stepping up to advocate to maintain Rideau, however. Earlier this month Rideau-Vanier Coun.

Mathieu Fleury announced

he would be protesting the announced closure of Rideau High School.

“The built infrastructure and location at Rideau — you can’t beat that,” Fleury said.

He’s absolutely right.

The school board would be out of its mind to rid itself of such a prime piece of real estate within close proximity to workplaces, community centres and the city centre. Residential property development in Vanier, New Edinburgh and Rockcliffe Park means an influx of young people and families moving into the vicinity. The

long-anticipated construction on the former Rockcliffe military base will see an entire town created, with thousands of new residents. The removal of Rideau High School will leave a nearly 20-kilometre gap between public Englishlanguage high schools, with nothing between downtown and Gloucester. And it comes at a time when the school has the potential to recreate its brand as a top-notch community school. The staff at Rideau, a handful of whom I have met on occasion, are a committed and talented bunch. What’s missing from the school is not talent, but some sort of niche programming. Coming from a small-town in Ontario, I find it odd that four public school boards spend millions of tax dollars annually on marketing campaigns to compete for our attention. But given the stakes, why can’t Rideau have an IB program or a science focus or an arts program that will make it stand out from the crowd? By

But another minor miracle happens at the Fisher Farm each and every week of the year. Unless it’s pre-empted by a holiday. It’s called Sunday dinner.

Sometimes when people hear that we average a gathering of ten to twenty people every week, they ask us how we do it. After nine years, we’ve pretty much got it down to a science.

We’ve never run out of food, despite one daughter being accountable for ten (count ‘em, ten) surprise guests one week.

We need to know how many people are coming (or thereabouts) on Saturday so the farmer knows how much meat to take out of the freezer. We have our own organic turkey and chicken, but we don’t finish our beef cattle at our farm so we’ve never known what they taste like. They just go to market when they are still young, to be fattened up somewhere else. My father-in-law likes to fill our freezer with beef and pork and the occasional salmon. He and my mother- in-law only miss Sunday dinner if their chauffeur is unavailable. They don’t drive out from Ottawa on their own during winter.

Sometimes the upstairs has to be saved for the following Saturday, if we have a particularly busy week. But the main floor gets done. Sometimes in record time, if we have other things going on, like the farmers’ market. Don’t look too closely or you might find the dust bunnies. The farmer heads out to the barn and does some chores, or, if it’s a nice day, he goes to work on the log cabin he is building. By noon we are both in the kitchen. I’m setting the buffet table with chafing dishes, hot plates, table settings and wine glasses. He is preparing the veggies and the meat.

We have to start the fire in the sun porch wood-stove by noon or it won’t

be warm enough in there by dinner. I pull table cloths over our 16-foot-long picnic table and set out candles, napkins. I prepare the appetizers and try not to eat too much of them before our guests arrive around 5 p.m. Half a dozen cars pull into the driveway over the next half-hour and guests wander in with their dinner contributions: hot casseroles, more appetizers. Dessert.

Wine. Fresh bread. Comfort food.

Each guest takes time to greet the farmer, our cook, our host, our miracle worker. The baby wriggles out of her snow clothes and toddles into the living room to see what treasures grandma has decided to bring out of storage this week: a wooden puzzle, a fairy tale book, a xylophone. She

giggles, gives us a shy look and tries to decide what to play with first.

It amazes me that my husband can time the dishes so well that they all arrive on the table, hot and ready to eat, at the same time. Except for that time he got distracted playing with his granddaughter and the roast caught fire. Or the time he was caught up in a war movie and he overcooked the potatoes. We ate those blackened and smoked dishes anyway and called them gourmet.

By 6 p.m. the assembly line has passed over the food, loaded their plates and settled at the porch table.

We can seat about eighteen people in there comfortably. But by some miracle, we can always make room for more.

Some weeks it is quite a chore to get Sunday dinner ready and served. Other weeks it takes three days to clean up. But I think if you ask the farmer, he would tell you it’s worth it. And I would have to agree. We are blessed to have family and friends nearby, who want to mark the beginning of another week with us. Life is short. West Carleton Food Access Centre provides food support

It’s good and not so good!

It’s good that the West Carleton Food Access Centre exists to provide food support to individuals and families in the West Carleton area who require assistance.

And it’s good that the West Carleton Food Access Centre, which is entirely run by volunteers, is able to meet this demand for food thanks to the generosity of West Carleton residents and businesses.

But while all this is good, it is not so good that the demand for the Food Access Centre’s services is growing. Currently over 55 families use the services of the West Carleton Food Ac-

cess Centre each month. This is an increase in use of ten families just over the past year.

At Christmas time, the West Carleton Food Access Centre provided Christmas baskets to over 90 families so ensure that they could enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner.

The mission statement of the West Carleton Food Access Centre is to provide healthy nutritious food and basic necessities to residents of West Carleton. The goals of the West Carleton Food Access Centre is to provide food so that no one goes hungry, to educate residents on the management of food resources, to provide nutritious recipes and to have fresh food available year round when possible.

Writing contest to include comics

There’s something new this year in the Ottawa Public Library’s “Awesome Authors” youth writing contest. It now also includes comics.

Yes, that’s right – besides poems and written stories as in past years, this year’s contest has a new category, comics.

So, besides submissions from young writers and poets, this contest also wants submissions

from young comic artists.

The contest is now underway for those between the ages of 9 and 17 years.

The contest deadline is Feb. 13.

Entries must be submitted electronically on the contest webpage or in person at a local library branch. Details and contest rules can be found online at biblioottawalibrary.ca/ AwesomeAuthors.

The winners will be revealed and receive their prizes at a cer-

emony on March 28 at the Centrepointe Theatre in Nepean.

This “Awesome Authors” youth writing contest is sponsored by the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) who each year publish “pot-pourri,” an annual anthology of the winning submissions from the “Awesome Authors” contest.

And this year these winning submissions will also include comics as well as short stories and poems.

t took a lot to get Father to lift his eyes off the Ottawa Farm Journal once he had settled down in front of the Findlay Oval after supper. But Emerson’s question to Mother not only caused Father to drop the paper to his lap, but in a voice loud enough we could all hear, he said “not a chance.”

As usual, we were all sitting around the table after the kitchen had been redded up. For once, Emerson wasn’t drawing glass buildings. He was just sitting there, arms

They were hard at it, and Mother went back to writing in her diaries, my sister Audrey took my hand and led me to the stove saying she thought she’d make a cup of hot chocolate, and Father went back to reading the Ottawa Farm Journal. The three brothers were hot into it!

The Rosary went flying out of Emerson’s hand, Mother caught it before it landed on the table, put it in her apron pocket, and sent the three boys off to bed.

The recent change of weather and temperature fluctuations has caused roads in West Carleton to break up.

“Potholes are the gift that keeps on giving,” says Ward 5 Councillor Eli El-Chantiry.

“This is a problem everywhere.

Water under asphalt freezes and then melts and makes a hole. We need to pay constant attention to this.”

Last year the City of Ottawa roads department filled 265,000 potholes. In areas such as Constance Bay, the predicament is seemingly never-ending, according residents on Bayview Drive, Albirch and adjoining streets.

Here comes grand reopening of West Carleton Amateur Sports Club

Mark Saturday Feb. 4, in your calendar as the night to attend the grand reopening of West Carleton Amateur Sports Club upstairs at the W. Erskine Johnston Arena in Carp.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for an evening filled with food, prizes, live music and more.

A new volunteer committee took over operation of the facility last November after it had been forced to close due to unpaid debts and a general decline in patronage.

Since then a revitalization effort has been underway, led by a committee of five local residents who are committed to making the hall into a recreational venue

to be enjoyed by everyone in the community.

The new group, all members of the old-timers’ hockey league, chose to remain anonymous, indicating that they want to go quietly about the task of bringing new life to the facility.

So far they have installed three 58-inch televisions and one giant screen, 5 feet by 8-feet, to show sports games, seasonal playoffs and other programs of interest. New furniture includes soft, leather individual chairs, leather covered padded bar stools and handmade, solid wood tables.

Soon to be added will be more chairs and large wood tables to seat about eight people each.

The room has a capacity of 200 people and there is also additional space in an adjacent

room that can handle another 30 patrons.

Committee member John Melhuish was at the centre last week, helping to complete renovations before the grand opening. The crew, which includes local technicians and craftspeople donating their time, is currently removing the wainscotting and replacing it with drywall prior to a paint job.

“We hope to remove the ceiling tiles and expose the ceiling at some point,” said John Melhuish.

With a new look, improved bar refreshments and menu, the committee hopes to see the Sports Club become a hub of recreation in the community.

“This is really the only place like it in Carp,” Melhuish pointed out. “We are excited about the possibilities.”

Proceeds above operating costs will be used to support community initiatives, teams and charitable causes. So far the Sports Club has six paid employees who will operate the venue weekdays from 4 p.m. to midnight and weekends 12 noon to midnight.

“This is a great facility and there is a need for it in the community,” said Melhuish. “People are already starting to come in and we hope to be able to make significant financial contributions to the community.”

The grand opening Saturday Feb. 4 will break the ice for a Super Bowl party the next day, with the football classic played on the big screen with plenty of food and refreshments.

The snack menu currently offers chicken wings, nachos, gourmet grilled cheddar cheese with bacon and personal sized

pepperoni pizza. More food offerings will be added as the venue gets established.

The committee is looking ahead to hosting public events geared at entertaining the whole family. Live music is also on the agenda for upcoming special events.

“Children are welcome here, this is a family recreation establishment,” said Melhuish.

There is no membership required to enjoy the West Carleton Amateur Sports Club. The

hall may be available for private party rentals, but the committee has yet to work that into the roster.

“We are growing as we go.

Right now we are focusing on finishing the renovations for our grand opening.

Then we can plan how we can make the facility best suit the needs of the community.”

Nominations wanted for business awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the West Ottawa Business Excellence Awards.

Organized by the West Ottawa Board of Trade, these awards honour businesses, organizations and individuals in the west Ottawa area in a number of categories. Geographic areas covered by these awards include Kanata, Goulbourn/Stittsville, West Carleton and Nepean.

Nominations can be submitted through the West Ottawa Board of Trade website.

The awards are presented at an annual awards gala which always attracts over 300 people at the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata. This year’s awards

gala will be held on Thursday, March 30.

The awards are presented in two categories: individual awards and business/organization awards.

The individual awards recognize a business leader and a young entrepreneur.

The “Business Leader” award recognizes the accomplishments of a business person who has displayed a significant commitment to the success of the business in the region. The individual would have demonstrated outstanding business acumen and leadership in the community, serving as a positive role model or mentor for others.

The “Young Entrepreneur” award recognizes a business owner or founder under the age of 35 who has excelled in business, has exemplified

Extrication needed

Extrication was needed to free a 55 year old female tripped in a rolled over vehicle on highway 417 westbound just west of Carp Road.

Ottawa paramedics and Ottawa firefighters responded to the situation, with the Ottawa Paramedic Service Communications Centre receiving the call at 7:50 p.m. on Jan. 19.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived on the scene to find the woman conscious but trapped

in a van that was on its side along the westbound 417.

Firefighters immediately stabilized the vehicle, laid a protective hose line and commenced extrication, removing the roof of the van and freeing the woman about 8:20 p.m.

Paramedics on site then took over patient care, treating for head and spinal injuries. The woman was transported to the Trauma Centre in serious but stable condition.

The Ottawa Provincial Police are investigating the incident.

Pakenham Frost Festival honours Burn Your Bra for Bev event SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW

The Pakenham Frost Festival continues into the second week with the event's highlight on Friday, Jan. 27: the appreciation ceremony at 7:15 p.m. at centre ice at the Stewart Community Centre. This year the community will be acknowledging the many years of hard work and dedication by the organizers of the highly successful Burn Your Bra for Bev events.

The women at the centre of all the excitement are: Kristy Wood-Giles, Kathryn Wood Pinel, Darlene Ryan, Karen Killeen Leonard, Jody Watt-Gleeson, Kim Schultz Larioza, Cheryl Hunt, Grace Argue Badham, Cindy Sue Pot-

ter, and in earlier years Laura Giles and Shawna Crawford - all with special connections to the Pakenham area.

In 12 years of Burn Your Bra for Bev, more than half a million dollars has been raised. The intention in the beginning was simple; gather women, have fun, dance all night and raise money for those in need.

Tragically, in 2006 the committee experienced a great loss with the sudden passing of fellow organizer Bev Griffith.

For that reason, Burn your Bra was then known as Burn your Bra for Bev (BYB4B), in order to commemorate the impact she would forever have on the group's devotion to the causes they supported.

Gleeson stated with glee, "Since the inaugural event in 2005, not only was it always sold out, it had a 200-plus waitlist each and every year.

The women who attended did so with their daughters, mothers, grandmothers, friends and neighbours. They came from near and far (Bev's daughter all the way from San Jose, California) for this never to be missed event."

Attendees enjoyed participating in raffles, auctions and great prizes, often while enjoying a beverage. Neighbours and local businesses were beyond generous with silent and live auction items totaling close to 250 most years.

Pillars in the community donated their time at the event, most notably the Mississippi Mills Fire Department, both station #1 and #2. Dozens of brave firemen showed up to wait on more than 500 women, which proved sometime to be scarier than running into a burning fire!

The Burn Your Bra for Bev has allowed the memorializing of those special to the organizers, to better understand the challenges of others and do a small part to help those in need. The BYB4B night was where women could come togeth-

er and be reminded of the power in small communities and small efforts. It will be hard to imagine a year without Burn Your Bra for Bev, but the work and intention still lives on - it just may be a little quieter this Mother’s Day weekend on the streets of Pakenham.

Many groups and organizations have benefited financially though hundreds of others have been touched with the generosity of a small town. It could not have happened in any other place and the community would like to show their appreciation to these energetic women for their efforts. A total of $513,270 has been raised

since 2005.

FROST FESTIVAL CONTINUES

The Frost Festival continues with the Fish ‘n Chips dinner on Friday, Jan. 27 from 4:30 to 7 p.m., with tickets required in advance. Following the appreciation ceremony, the Junior B hockey game between Arnprior Packers and the Ottawa West Golden Knights hits the ice.

On Saturday, Jan. 28, the Tobogganing Party at noon at the Pakenham Highlands Golf Course will bring out the young and some fun while others can participate all day in snow sculpturing adventures

at the 5 Span Feed and Seed, near the bridge. Snacks of hot dogs and hot chocolate round out the day.

The infamous Frost Festival Pub Night will see The Ryans in kick-off position until Arnprior’s own Casey Corbin, comedian extraordinaire takes the stage. The entertainment continues with the John O’Neill Bake Auction. A free shuttle service will be offered, sponsored by Barr Bus Lines, by calling in advance at 613624-5925.

El-Chantiry re-elected to police services board SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW

West Carleton Coun. Eli El-Chantiry has been re-elected as chair of the city’s police services board.

No one challenged El-Chantiry or Jim Durrell who was re-elected as vicechair for the positions at a Jan. 23 meet-

ing at Ottawa city hall.

“Mr. Durrell and I are both pleased to be continuing as Vice-Chair and Chair on the Board,” El-Chantiry said in a press release. “There are a lot of changes taking place within the Ottawa Police Service and in policing in general. We are looking forward to continuing to work

with our fellow board members and the service during this period of transition.”

El-Chantiry joined the police services board in January 2003. He has sat on the board ever since except for a six-month break in 2007. He is also the current president of the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards.

cies, such as the Black-capped Chickadee, have a name that refers to either a visible or audible feature of the species (both in the case of the chickadee), making it easier to connect a bird to its name, other appellations lack any reference to something useful.

Take, for example, Cape May Warblers. Now, one might suspect that these birds reside year-round in Massachusetts. However, those little warblers nest in northern boreal forests and only briefly visit Cape May on their way to and from their wintering grounds, which lie primarily in the West Indies. The same applies to the Tennessee Warbler, another rather poorly named species. Alexander Wilson, a prominent early American ornithologist, named both birds after the geographic location in which he first observed them.

Fortunately, some species (like the chickadee) have names that seem logically associated with a visible feature.

Red-headed Woodpeckers (at least as adults) sport a com-

pletely red head; in fact, they are the only members of their group to do so. White-winged Crossbills have oddly crossed bills and bear white wing-bars so their name is descriptive and useful. But what about the Ring-necked Duck? Relatively few people have seen the thin brown ring that adorns the neck of only the males of this species and that is for good reason: it is only visible when one of those ducks is really close or in the hand. A myriad of people, however, have noticed the conspicuous ring on its bill, a feature sported by both sexes. Why this species was not named the “Ring-billed Duck” frustrates me to no end.

Bird names are standardized, with an American-based committee, the American Ornithologists’ Union, responsible for formalizing both the common and the scientific names of every North American species. However, the assignment of common names has been at the discretion of the species’ finder. Thus, the names of some birds reflect a visible feature of their plum-

age while those of others bear a name that includes either the geographic location of the first encounter or the name of a famous person being honoured.

Birds are not the only animal group to contain a mix of useful and quite uninformative names for their species.

Meadow Jumping Mice live in meadows and jump like miniature kangaroos while their close relative, the Woodland Jumping Mouse, bounces around in forests. Bravo to whoever named them. But not to the fellow who gave Deer Mice their name. And who named the Fisher? These tree-

climbing weasels rarely swim and seldom, if ever, eat fish.

Map Turtles bear maplike patterns on their skin and shells; Smooth Green Snakes are emerald green; Red-bellied Snakes sport red bellies, so all of these reptiles are well-named creatures. But what about the Garter Snake?

These harmless reptiles really don’t look like, and certainly never associate with that type of garment.

Which may come as no small relief to the female readers of this column!

‘The Music of Broadway’ concert in Arnprior SUBMITTED

Beat the winter blues with Broadway! “The Music of Broadway” concert will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28, 3 p.m. at Grace St. Andrew’s United Church. Come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of singing with the vocal students of Lisa Webber. Musicals such as Annie, Wicked, Anne of Green

Gables, Chicago, Hamilton, Thirteen, Chorus Line and many more will be featured.

There will even be several opportunities to sing along with your favourite songs.

The young performers have a wide range of experience. Many perform in school musicals, local festivals, provincial competitions and Two Rivers Musical Productions. Ranging from 10 to 18, the school-age students

are all energetic, enthusiastic and very talented. They love every opportunity to perform in front of an audience, and some see themselves going on to music programs after graduation.

Soprano Mallory Brumm will be an MC along with teacher Lisa Webber. The two will introduce the songs, the musicals and create a Broadway show experience. Mallory is currently doing a high school

Radar speed signs appear on Dunrobin Road in West Carleton

Radar speed signs have been installed on Dunrobin Road in West Carleton.

The interactive sign, constructed of a series of LEDs, displays vehicle speed as motorists approach. The purpose of radar speed signs is to slow cars down by making drivers aware when they are driving at speeds above the posted limits.

Ward 5 Councillor Eli El-Chantiry says the signs were installed by the Safe Ottawa campaign and are used as a traffic calming device.

“Electronic speed signs are not photo radar,” El-Chantiry points out. “If drivers are over the speed limit, the sign displays the speed in flashing red. That information is collected and the data is shared with Safe Roads Ottawa and Ottawa Police.”

Based on the data collected, police will monitor that area and hand out speeding tickets as required. Signs are currently located on Dunrobin Road westbound near Murphy Side Road and eastbound around the 3400 area.

“The signs will be moved to different locations, such as Dunrobin, Kinburn Sideroad and other places where people have complained about the speed of traffic.”

El-Chantiry said the City’s 311 number receives a considerable amount of complaints about speeding on Dunrobin Road.

“When people complain about the speed, city staff and police work together to reduce the amount of speeding.

These are not photo radar but stats are recorded that data is collected to help police with enforcement in the area.”

Police sometimes make recommendations for a location

of the speed signs.

El-Chantiry said police issue about 1,200 — 1,500 tickets a year on Dunrobin Road.

“That is why we focus on Dunrobin Road.

It is one of the main arteries of West Carleton. Speeding is dangerous.”

Residents who observe speeding motorists are advised to call police directly at 2361222, ext. 7300 or email Ottawa Police.ca.

“If you call my office or the city I can make a recommendation, but if you call the police directly, they respond to your complaint.”

Speed signs are used across the region to collect volume and speed data to isolate speeding problem areas and prioritize enforcement.

The signs can be equipped to take daytime awareness images of high-speed violators, congestion and vandals tampering with the sign using an unobtrusive, internal camera.

Images can also be taken at set time intervals, but the images will not capture license plates.

There are a number of factors to be taken into account when purchasing an existing business including tax, liability, due diligence and employee matters. Your question relates to the contracts between the business and third parties. These contracts may include rights obtained by the business necessary to carry on the business, such as licenses or franchises, or the benefit of sale or service agreements for the supply of products or services that generate revenue for the business.

Jon Brunette Memorial Fun Day

For most of the players, this will be their first “tournament-type” experience.

Each team will play two fun games with lunch served upstairs after each team has played its initial game. The first game will be at 1 p.m. right after the opening ceremony while the last games will get underway at 4 p.m.

Each participating player will receive a trophy following his or her last game played.

The Fun Day will also include raffle draws, a 50/50 draw and a bake sale, all in support of the WCMHA’s Initiation Program.

This Jon Brunette Memorial Fun Day has been organized by the WCMHA for over ten years in honour of Jon Brunette, who lost his life in a snowmobile accident on March 17, 2003. Jon played minor hockey in the WCMHA

system from 1990 to 1998 and then with the Ottawa Valley Titans in 1998 and 1999. He then played three seasons with the Arnprior Packers Jr. B Hockey Club.

For those who did not know Jon, the following is an excerpt from a memorial presentation

by Jon’s captain of three years on the Arnprior Packers team: “Jon was one of those players you loved to have on your team but you hated to play against. No matter if the score was 1-1 or 8-1, Jon played with the same intensity on every shift. People ask me what I thought Jon brought to the team and I say the same word every time: “Everything.” If you were to mould a perfect hockey player, Jon would be a great example. He was tough, intensive, hardworking, dedicated, could score goals and was a team player. But most of all he had a heart the size of this room.”

3-on-3 Shinny Hockey Tournament SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW

This Sunday, Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the Huntley Community Association, in support of the 2017 OFS Habitat for Humanity Global Village Team’s Trip to Trinidad, will host a 3-on-3 Shinny Hockey Tournament at the outdoor rink in Carp.

All proceeds will go directly to fund team travel expenses and a Habitat for Humanity Global Village project helping

a family or community in need.

The ice surface will be split into two games at a time, meaning that there will be four teams playing at any one time during the day.

There will be 25 minute continuous games, preceded by a five minute warm up.

Firefighters from Carp’s Fire Station 64 will be in attendance with the Rescue#64 truck on view for public education and community outreach.

Closing ceremonies of the tournament will be hosted by the West Carleton Amateur Sports Club at the arena, where there will be an awards ceremony, food and a silent auction.

And don’t forget” kids, parents, spouses, friends and all others are all encouraged to come out and watch the action and cheer on the players. Remember, there will be a barbecue and hot chocolate and coffee will be available.

Baked apple oatmeal good for more than breakfast Apples add a burst of fresh flavour to breakfast oatmeal.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup (250 mL) diced apple (Red Prince, Spartan or Cortland) • 1 cup (250 mL) large flake rolled oats • 2 tbsp (25 mL) hemp hearts • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each baking powder and ground cinnamon • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) each ground ginger, nutmeg and salt • 1 Ontario Egg, whisked • 1-1/2 cups (325 mL) milk •1/4 cup (50 mL) maple syrup • 1 tbsp (15 mL) butter, melted • 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla

PREPARATION

In medium bowl, combine apple, oats, hemp hearts, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt.

In separate medium bowl, whisk egg, milk, maple syrup, butter and vanilla.

Pour over apple mixture and stir.

Equally divide among four one cup (250 mL) ramekins. Place ramekins on rimmed baking sheet. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 35 minutes or until dry on top and slightly risen.

Enjoy immediately or cool, cover and refrigerate for up to three days.

How to go about building A NEW HOME When you’re looking at the big job of building a new home, your budget is the first consideration, of course. How much capital you have and how much financing you can access determine whether you hire a contractor or do some or all of the work yourself.

You’ll deal with a general contractor. A contractor is responsible for all aspects of the building of your home, according to the design and plan you ask him or her to use. The contractor, or builder, should be licensed and reputable, as you’ll be expecting him to build according to code. Make sure your chosen contractor has a good knowledge of building standards in your area and good references from other clients.

You’ll do it all yourself. If you decide to be your own contractor, you should first contact the association that governs your local building code.

You may be required to obtain a licence or hire licensed subcontractors for certain jobs. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all building standards if you hire relatives or friends to help you.

More options However you go about having your home built, there are some considerations to take care of before you proceed.

• Find land. Your first step should be to find some land in your area of choice. Before buying a lot, check with the municipality to ensure your

project complies with all standards and codes.

Otherwise, you might end up with a lot where you can’t build a new residential home.

• Choose your plans. There are several options: you can shop around for ready-made floor plans; choose one from those offered by the contractor you hire; or work with an architect to design your own home.

• Choose a prefab home. If you choose this route, you’ll have plenty of options. Prefabricated

homes are available in modules or panels and are assembled with the help of the manufacturer and a specialized contractor.

• Choose a housing development. Your job may be easier if you decide to go with a housing developer that offers pre-prepared lots and a repertory of floor plans. However, be sure to check the background of the contractor in charge of this development and take the time to study the plans and terms before signing the preliminary contract.

How to save for a down payment A home is the most costly thing many people will ever buy. The process of buying a home can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. One way to make the process of buying a home go more smoothly is to save enough money to put down a substantial down payment.

Saving for a down payment on a home is similar to saving for other items, only on a far grander scale.

Many financial planners and real estate professionals recommend prospective home buyers put down no less than 20 percent of the total cost of the home they’re buying.

Down payments short of 20 percent will require private mortgage insurance, or PMI. The cost of PMI depends on a host of variables, but is generally between 0.3 and 1.5 percent of the original loan amount. While plenty of homeowners pay PMI, buyers who can afford to put down 20 percent can save themselves a considerable amount of money by doing so.

Down payments on a home tend to be substantial, but the following are a few strategies prospective home buyers can employ to grow their savings with an eye toward making a down payment on their next home.

• Decide when you want to buy.

The first step to buying a home begins when buyers save their first dollar for a down payment.

Deciding when to buy can help buyers develop a saving strategy.

If buyers decide they want to buy in five years away, they will have more time to build their savings. If buyers want to buy within a year, they will need to save more each month, and those whose existing savings fall far short of the 20 percent threshold may have to accept paying PMI. • Prequalify for a mortgage. Before buyers even look for their new homes, they should first sit down with a mortgage lender to deter-

mine how much a mortgage they will qualify for. Prequalifying for a mortgage can make the home buying process a lot easier, and it also can give first-time buyers an idea of how much they can spend. Once lenders prequalify prospective buyers, the buyers can then do the simple math to determine how much they will need to put down. For example, preapproval for a $300,000 loan means buyers will have to put down $60,000 to meet the 20 per-

cent down payment threshold. In that example, buyers can put down less than $60,000, but they will then have to pay PMI. It’s important for buyers to understand that a down payment is not the only costs they will have to come up with when buying a home. Closing costs and other fees will also need to be paid by the buyers.

• Examine monthly expenses.

Once buyers learn how much mortgage they will qualify for, they will then see how close they are to buying a home. But prospective buyers of all means can save more each month by examining their monthly expenses and looking for ways to save. Buyers can begin by looking over their recent spending habits and then seeing where they can spend less. Cutting back on luxuries and other unnecessary spending can help buyers get closer to buying their next home.

• Avoid risky investments.

Some times it’s great to take risks when investing, but risk should be avoided when saving for a down payment on a home. Traditional vehicles like certificates of deposit, or CDs, and savings accounts can ensure the money buyers are saving for their homes is protected and not subject to market fluctuations.

Saving enough to make a down payment on a home can be accomplished if buyers stay disciplined with regard to saving and make sound financial decisions.

• Drywall installation and finishing • Painting • Staircase building Avoid unpleasant surprises by doing business with companies that are recognized by a legitimate building or homebuilder’s association.

Ask for references from your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours: word of mouth can help you find a trustworthy builder that will finish the work on time and on budget.

A word of advice: if you’re offered a discount on “under-the-table” (i.e. undeclared) work, never, ever accept it. Not only are such transactions illegal, but work that’s done off the books can’t be guaranteed.

That means that if it’s not done correctly, your only option is to start over with another company—a hefty price to pay for an attempt to save a few dollars.

Purchasing a home Before you head out in search of the house that will sweep you off your feet, make an appointment with a mortgage broker to check your loan admissibility.

Then, pinpoint potentially interesting neighbourhoods by considering what elements are important to you, such as proximity to parks, access to major highways, presence of young families and so on. Finally, drive around those neighbourhoods and spot the “for sale” signs!

Make your research more efficient by hiring a real estate broker to find houses that meet your criteria and to set up showings at your convenience.

He or she will also be able to answer any questions you may have about buying property. The more knowledge you have, the less stressful the process should be! Once you have your heart set on a house, you can move on to the

next step: making an offer to purchase.

Your offer should be contingent upon an inspection of the building. The prepurchase home inspection will bring to light any major defects that could be detrimental to the property’s function, comfort, value or safety. If the inspection results are satisfactory, you can get back to your offer knowing that you’ve done your due diligence. Once you come to an agreement with the seller, all that’s left is to make it official with a lawyer or notary. Congratulations on your new home!

Contact a reputable moving company as soon as you find out when you’ll finally have the keys to your new home. If you need to temporarily store some of your belongings, look for a storage facility that’s well lit, adequately ventilated and securely monitored. Don’t forget to get mortgage insurance—it could save you a lot of headache in the event of an emergency or mishap.

But no matter how energetic their youngsters are, parents can still employ several strategies to ensure their homes are both sophisticated and child-friendly.

• Consider an open floor plan. Rooms that flow into one another make it easier to keep tabs on children. Such rooms also allow residents and guests to mingle in separate rooms but not be too far away from one another.

• Choose washable fabrics. Upholstery will need to stand up to the abuse kids can dish out. Sofas and chairs with slipcovers can be advantageous because many slipcovers can be easily removed and laundered. Patterned fabrics will hide some stains, while treated fabrics may resist liquid spills for easier cleanup.

• Create a catch-all spot. Special bins or other organizational tools in the entryway can help to cull clutter when children come in the house from school or play.

Be sure the keep cubbies, containers and coat hooks at a child-friendly height.

• Look for high-traffic rugs. Rugs designed for high-traffic areas will be more forgiving when children march across them several times per day. There are no rules that say you can’t bring an outdoor rug inside, and these rugs tend to be easier to clean.

• Ensure there is plenty of seating. Sectionals give children ample room to spread out. And ample seating ensures there is enough room for kids to invite their friends over to hang out.

• Think outside pink and blue. For children’s rooms, make sure they’re colorful, but consider other hues to give the rooms some personality. Focus on a hobby or activity and borrow the color scheme from the accessories used for decorating.

• Hang whimsical artwork. Employ framing and lighting to make kids’ artwork look like professional pieces. Routinely change the pictures when a new look is desired.

• Designate a place for play. Devote an entire room or a nook in a house for imaginative play. Store toys here so these items will not create clutter in individual bedrooms.

Creating child-friendly spaces while ensuring a home maintains a sophisticated feel is easier than parents might think.

Make the year ahead clutter-free Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house.

Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house.

Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. Clearing a home of clutter can seem like a monumental task, but the following tips can help homeowners and apartment dwellers make the year ahead clutter-free.

• Scan important documents and save them on a computer. Some documents cannot be discarded, but that does not mean they have to be stored in bulky file cabinets or desk drawers. Scan important documents such as medical receipts or tax returns and save them on your computer where they won’t take up any physical space. Purchase an external hard drive as a safety net where you can store backups of important documents in case a computer crashes and cannot be rebooted.

• Thin out DVD and CD libraries. Thanks to streaming services and digital music players, DVDs and compact discs have become somewhat obsolete.

Discard or donate DVDs that you can just as easily stream through your television, and convert compact discs to digital files that you can play on your computer and MP3 players, ultimately donating the discs and clearing space.

• Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment.

• Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That’s still the case even though many adults now pay the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don’t pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop.

• Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts.

Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door.

Clearing clutter is a goal for many people at the dawn of a new year. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.

Create drama with BOLD PAINT colours (MS) – Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. Paint colours can dramatically change the mood and the design of a home. And depending on a homeowner’s goals, paint can make a statement or blend into the background.

Many people are now looking to bold colours to make spaces stand out. But choosing a paint colour can be challenging. Homeowners looking to update walls and complement decor may want to look at some of the more impactful colours that Pantone indicates will be popular for the 2017 season. Primrose Yellow, Lapis Blue, Flame, Pink Yarrow, and Greenery are some of the more eye-catching selections. Once colours are selected, consider these guidelines for using bolder colours in room designs.

• Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for colour overload or just a small focal point of vivid colour? Remember, using bold colour doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold colour display. Otherwise, rely on bold colours to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.

• Try bold in a small space. Many people are surprised at how well bold colours work in small spaces. Powder rooms can be an ideal spot to experiment with paint colours. Try deep colours that can make the area seem intimate and even exotic. Dark, bold hues can be toned down by different accents, such as neutral coloured fixtures and towels.

• Go bold in the kitchen. Incorporate a splash of colour in the kitchen without going overboard. Try an ap-

pliance or design fixture in a bright shade. Or paint the inside of the cabinets in your favorite colour and install glass inserts in the cabinet doors so that everyone gets a peek of the colour beyond. A neutral kitchen also can be brightened up with the use of silverware, dishes, pots and pans, and other kitchen items featured in

bold hues.

• Stick to boldness on interchangeable items. Those who like to experiment with colour may find that they like to switch out the colours now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out colour that much easier. For example,

replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when the mood strikes.

• Establish balance. Rely on neutral furniture, rugs, moldings and baseboards if you decide to take bold colours up a notch. This will help create a sense of balance in the room.

ment with colour. Many homeowners are not hesitant to use bold shades of colour when they learn the right techniques. And because paint is an inexpensive option for making over a room, homeowners who find they do not like a particular colour can easily paint over it with a new colour.

Slow pitch softball – now that’s a term that makes some sense. But “snow pitch softball” – now that makes no sense.

Or does it?

You can find out for yourself at this year’s Fitzroy Harbour winter carnival as one of its highlights will be a “snow pitch” tournament.

It’s apparently simply softball in the snow but you will want to see it happening for yourself.

Who knows? It may become the next winter craze!

Registration is now underway for this “snow pitch” tournament which will be taking place on

Saturday, Feb. 25 as part of the Fitzroy Harbour winter carnival. Those wishing to register for “snow pitch” softball should contact Chelsea Dykens@ocdsb.ca.

But the winter carnival is going to have a number of other highlights as well, taking place over its three day run from Thursday, Feb. 23 to Saturday, Feb. 25.

Activities will include a spaghetti supper and “City vs Country” hockey game on Thursday, Feb. 23; a family skating night and Dan & Carole’s trivia night on Friday, Feb. 24; and an event filled Saturday, Feb. 25 including a pancake breakfast, outdoor hockey league games, a mixed hockey jamboree and, of course, the “snow pitch” tournament.
