Snowmobile send-off for retiring principal

It was a snowmobile send-off fit for a queen.

Or, in the case of Stonecrest Elementary School, a retiring principal.

And this is what happened as principal Melanie Buchanan, who retired on Tuesday, Jan. 31, was given a snowmobile ride around the school just before the 3:45 p.m. dismissal time, with all of the students lining the exterior of the school building to acknowledge the retiring principal as she rode by on a snowmobile driven by teacher Todd Storms.

Students gave a "royal wave" to the passing snowmobiling principal in honour of principal Buchanan's British heritage.

This snowmobile send-off came as a surprise to principal Buchanan.

After admitting to never having been on a snowmobile, she knew that her staff was arranging a snowmobile ride for her, but she did not know when and she certainly did not know that it would involve all of the Stonecrest students and staff like it did.

It was the brainchild of teacher Marcy Storms to combine the principal's first-ever snowmobile ride with a farewell event for her retirement.

Principal Buchanan, in snowmobile gear including a helmet, was taken twice around the school, receiving the students' royal waves and waving back in return. Principal ends 42-year career Continued from page 1

These other snowmobiles were driven by two of the school’s night time custodial staff, Richard Delahunt and Jacob Craig, with Jacob even dressing up in a fox costume for the event.

The weather was sunny for this snowmobile send-off, with a -8 C temperature with no wind.

In addition, earlier mild weather had been displaced and snow conditions around the school, which had been a concern leading up to the event due to mild weather, proved to be great for the snowmobile send-off.

Melanie Buchanan’s retirement on Jan. 31 marks the end of a 42-year career in education for her including the past three and a half years as principal of Stonecrest Elementary School at Woodlawn.

She began working for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board in 1988, serving as a principal for the past 16 years.

The new principal at Stonecrest Elementary School replacing her is Marina Saulig, who will be serving on an interim basis until a permanent principal is appointed by the school board for the 2017-18 school year.

"I want to make sure that we're all valuing what we have now and not lose it," she explains.

Here comes the CBBCA annual general meeting

You will be able to hear all about the plans surrounding the Constance and Buckham's Bay Community Centre in the coming year at the annual general meeting of the Constance and Buckham's Bay Community Association (CBBCA) this Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Community Centre on Len Purcell Drive in Constance Bay. You will also be able to provide input about these plans and will witness (if everything goes as planned) the unveiling of the new "commemorative wall" featuring tiles engraved with donor names as well as the unveiling of the new building name signage.

In 2017, the Constance and Buckham's Bay Community Centre will see significant renovations and modernization.

The main floor washrooms will be undergoing an extreme makeover, with the city of Ottawa undertaking a complete renovation of these main floor washrooms including bigger stalls, new millwork and mirrors, new floors and new ceilings.

In addition, thanks to a minor capital partnership with the city, a larger, brighter and more useful common area will be created.

And look for the beginnings of a new kitchen. Over the years, hundreds have used the current kitchen for numerous events. It has had its limitations but it has gotten the job done.

The new kitchen will eventually be big, bright and fun. Once fully operational, it is expected that 15 activities a week for groups of ten will use the kitchen. The kitchen's banquet configuration will be a great improvement over the existing situation.

This kitchen project has a significant price tag, which donations and five year memberships will help meet.

It is hoped to have the initial kitchen

operational by mid-2017.

But there's more happening at the Constance and Buckham's Bay Community Centre. An All-In Day Program has been launched, providing unlimited access to over 20 hours of daytime programs each week for less than the price of just one program.

There's the Sandhills Fitness Centre with its state-ofthe-art machines. There's seven hours of other new programming.

The new Club Room has been set up. There's been painting, floor refinishing and ceiling replacements through most of the facility. The temporary stage extensions have been made more functional, something which will benefit the performances when Rural Root Theatre and the CBBCA host Eastern Ontario's One Act Play Festival this year.

The CBBCA annual general meeting on Feb. 12 will include a report on the past year as well as a report on the plans for 2017. There will also be an election for the 2017 board of directors, although only those holding a valid 2017 CBBCA membership residing or having property in the CBBCA's service area may participate in the voting. It all gets underway at 1 p.m. and should be completed by 2:30 p.m.

The CBBCA serves an area roughly bounded

by Woodkilton Road, Vance's Side Road and the Ottawa River.

The original Constance and Buckham's Bay

Community centre was built in 1978 with the CBBCA, founded in 1946, taking on the role of managing, maintaining and developing the centre and its surrounding facilities. The centre was expanded in 1992 and again in 2015, resulting in a building that is now nearly 17,000 square feet in size. The centre operates seven days a week and averages between 90 and 130 events or activities per week depending on the season. There are over 80,000 visits each year.

The centre itself includes function halls, activity rooms, a fitness centre and a branch of the Ottawa Public Library. The outdoor facilities surrounding the centre include a skateboard park, an outdoor skating rink, ball diamonds, a playground, a volleyball court and soccer fields.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the CBBCA's annual general meeting this Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Constance and Buckham's Bay Community Centre on Len Purcell Drive.

Walking in Carp Hills

A moonlight walk. Enticing. A moonlight walk on snowshoes. Perhaps challenging, but fun. A moonlight walk on snowshoes in the Carp Hills. Awesome. And ascending to the highest point in the Carp Hills for a view over the Carp River valley lit by a nearly full moon.

Priceless.

But you can experience all of this and more by joining the Friends of the Carp Hills for a "Snowshoe in the Moonlight" walk this Saturday, Feb. 11.

You will be able to embrace the beauty of a winter's night by taking part in this moonlit snowshoe hike in the Carp Hills, starting at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 11. Gather at the building at 211 Donald B. Munro Drive (the former Yoga and Tea Studio) where there's parking space as well.

Those on the walk will then cross the road and head up into the hills on private property where they will gradually ascend to the highest point in the Carp Hills, giving a view over the Carp River valley, lit by a nearly full moon.

The walkers will then return to the departure building for hot refreshments and fellowship. It is estimated that the whole round trip will last from one to one and a half hours.

Those wishing to take part in this "Snowshoe in the Moonlight" should arrive at least ten minutes before 7:30 p.m. Participants will be asked to sign a waiver before participating.

If the weather does not co-operate, this excursion will be cancelled. Check out the Carp Hills Facebook page for the most up-to-date information.

The Friends of the Carp Hills will be holding their annual general meeting on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Carp Memorial Hall in Carp. It will be followed by a public briefing about the group's activities and plans for 2017. Everyone is welcome to attend but only members

Connected to your community

Attacks will make us stronger

T

he murder of six people and the wounding of others at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Quebec on Jan. 29 shocked all of Canada. And yet in the midst of all of the horror of this tragic shooting, Canadians have come together.

Such hatred, prejudice and racism as represented by this act of violence have no place in our society, and Canadians across the country have been quick and unified in denouncing such action and showing love and compassion for those directly impacted.

Are you surprised?

By the shooting and deaths — yes, because an attack like this on those in a worship space has not happened before in this country. But we have not been surprised by the reaction of Canadians because we care about each other, we respect each other’s beliefs and we value our diversity.

The actions of one person, as evidenced in this tragedy, are not going to shake our faith in each other. If anything, this has become an opportunity to express what it means to be a Canadian, what it means to be a part of a society that embraces dif-

ficult cultures, different faiths, different viewpoints and how our common values are paramount and bring us together as one.

Will we ever forget this tragic shooting and those who died or were injured?

No, just as we have not forgotten the 1989 massacre at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal where 14 women were killed in a rampage, also by a solo shooter filled with hatred.

And just like the Montreal massacre has led to ongoing and enhanced awareness of violence against women, we know that this murderous rampage in Quebec City will become a similar incident of focus that will lead to greater awareness and advocacy of our Canadian belief in diversity and acceptance.

So those who died on Jan. 29 will not have died in vain.

Their memory will live on and will be yet another building block in the continuing project of creating the Canadian society that we all want to see and experience, one that respects and enjoys the diversity and differences that each of us brings to our cultural mosaic.

Hold on tight as province puts brakes on road tolls

S

ure, it’s kind of cheap fun to sit back and watch the city of Toronto fight with the Ontario provincial government. Too bad there has to be a winner, some would say.

But the issue is serious and might be coming our way in the not-toodistant future. The argument is over tolls on highways. Toronto, after years of dilly-dallying while its traffic congestion went from bad to awful, finally bit the bullet and decided to start charging drivers for the use of the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway.

Not so fast, said the province, for reasons that may not be entirely non-political.

It’s an interesting and important discussion.

The Don Valley and the Gardiner are the two main entrance roads into Toronto’s downtown. They

gry. Others thought it was not a bad idea. And a third group thought it was a good idea that didn’t go nearly far enough.

Tory’s proposal, a $2 a time toll for use of the Don Valley and the Gardiner, was seen as occupying an unfortunate middle ground — enough to be irritating but not enough to deter most drivers and not enough to raise the big money Toronto’s transit system needs.

There were better ways, it was suggested.

But just when the debate over the plan was about to begin, Ontario’s Premier, Kathleen Wynne, stopped it by declaring that Toronto would not be allowed to put tolls in place.

There is the suggestion that this was done to curry favour with people who live in the suburbs surrounding the city, whose votes Wynne needs in an election.

She sweetened the pot a bit by offering the city a larger share of gasoline tax revenues, which is nice, but the deterrent effect of a toll was lost. If it was there in the first place.

The mystery continues, no nearer to a solution.

Farm vehicles should watch for overhead hydro lines Dear editor, In the dead of winter, most of us are not thinking about farm vehicles being on the road.

However, I would like to put out a pre-emptive call to the drivers of those vehicles to be more cautious and more aware of their own vehicles.

Most of the drivers are, of course, careful and respectful of what's around them, but some are not. I am still dealing with the aftermath of one such person's careless actions last fall.

On Friday November 4 around 4:30 p.m., an over-height harvesting vehicle of one type or another sped down my street and in the process tore down the hydro line that runs across the roadway to my driveway. Whoever it was, the driver did not stop - although he or she would

surely have felt the impact of tearing the hydro line in half. Left behind were live hydro lines hanging almost to the ground that would have been difficult for other drivers to see. The effect of driving into that could have been catastrophic, including for the school buses that regularly run on this road around that time.

Luckily I was home because the impact on my house would have been equally catastrophic.

Only the neutral line snapped and so electricity continued to surge into my house, but had no way of getting out. In just the few minutes before I could turn off the main breaker, all of my appliances fried (fridge, stove, microwave, hot water tank, water softener ... etc.) and a power bar completely burned. Even the smoke alarms, which went off, were damaged and have all had

I have since incurred several thousand dollars in expenses and the hassle of replacing and/ or repairing the burnt out appliances, smoke alarms, power bars, etc. Hydro's insurance will not cover the cost because the incident was not the company's "fault" and I elected not to

go through my own house insurance because it would end up costing me anyway through higher premiums.

All of this because someone who didn't pay attention to his or her vehicle and driving and chose not to stop after what is essentially a hitand-run accident.

It's like spring training for the annual Diefenbooker Classic. At least for walkers!

Just like ball players need time to get physically fit for their upcoming season, so too walkers can benefit from preparation that allows them to finish the Diefenbooker Classic 5K walk on Saturday, May 6 still feeling energized rather than exhausted.

And this can be accomplished by joining the walking clinic in Carp.

And, what's more, it's free!

It is a great way to incorporate walking into your life, especially if you are already somewhat active from tasks such as gardening or housework and are without significant health issues.

This walking clinic group includes walking enthusiasts who will provide ongoing encouragement to help new group members ("rookies," to borrow a baseball phrase) walk 5K in less than an hour while also improving walking posture and form.

It's a ten week program and after it, the Diefenbooker Classic will be a breeze.

Over the ten weeks of the program, participants will build up their fitness level and their confidence to be able to walk the 5K event at the Diefenbooker Classic. Everyone trains together

once a week on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m.

For week one, participants will walk for 15 minutes. You will be expected to practice this three times during the week by yourself. As every week progresses, the walking time increases. During the course of the ten weeks, you will get to work on proper posture, the use of the arms, form and techniques.

As your fitness level increases, there will be some training on hills and some exercises to increase speed. On the final day of the clinic, everyone will walk the actual race course so that you know what to expect on race day.

You will be amazed at how easy it all seems.

Everyone is encouraged to join this walking clinic. Everyone has fun and there will be lots of friendly motivation provided. It does not matter if you are new to walking or just need some help getting started again.

Arnprior Regional Health gets provincial approval Special to the Review

Arnprior Regional Health (ARH) has just been approved to proceed with much-needed upgrades to the central sterile reprocessing area (CSR).

ARH officials learned of the news through a letter from Dr. Eric Hoskins — Minister of Health. The government has approved the project with a total cost of $1,995,600 with the ministry share being up to $1,793,600.

“This announcement, along with other previous announcements relating to the building infrastructure at the hospital, brings the ministry’s funding to almost $4 million this year,” said Eric Hanna, president and CEO. He said the Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring quality care is provided in rural Ontario communities.

Small, integrated rural health corporations such as ARH are models the Ministry of Health is focused upon supporting.

“Every year there are almost 3,000 surgical procedures performed at the hospital site of Arnprior Regional Health. The sterile processing of instruments, devices, and items has a major impact on infection control and patient safety. Devices used in surgical procedures must be sterile and safe when used,” says an ARH press release. “Despite ARH’s cramped physical space and inadequate environmental infrastructure over recent years, CSR staff has been successful in maintaining stringent standards and have been pivotal in achieving our very low surgical site infection rate. The new funding allows staff to work in an environment that is modern and

up-to-date. “ Arnprior Regional Health has a dedicated and very knowledgeable team, including more than 14 surgeons who are supported by three anesthetists. The operating room and CSR staff members are very pleased with the announcement, noting that their surgical program is a vital service to the growing and aging community.

General surgeon Dr. Andrea Gutauskas was thrilled with the announcement saying, “Patients who are provided with surgery within their community based hospital allows for more family support which can be an integral part in their recovery.”

Recognition of this important investment was also acknowledged by John Fraser, parliamentary assistant to the Minster of Health and Long-Term Care and Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa South. “I am pleased that the ministry is providing support to the project at the Arnprior Regional Health — Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital site. The team there has been providing exemplary health care services for over 70 years. I know that the central sterilization and reprocessing renovation project will ensure that patients avoid infections and that the doctors, nurses and health professionals are able to quickly access the instrumentation and equipment they need.”

Work on the project is expected to last up to 12 months and the next steps will include finalizing the design and cost elements, along with scheduling the construction to avoid disruption to the surgical program.

67 teams, 120 games in West Ottawa Ringette Association tournament Ottawa, especially in Kanata, Stittsville and Richmond. Lots of action! And a National Ringette League game included, showing ringette play at its very best. Awesome!

This is the story of the 14th annual ringette tournament being hosted by the West Ottawa Ringette Association (WORA) this coming weekend, Feb. 9-12.

The WORA will be hosting a National Ringette League (NRL) game during the tournament. This NRL game will feature some of Canada's top ringette players, demonstrating top level skills. The NRL involves 16 teams from across Canada.

This NRL game at the WORA tournament will take place at arena "A" at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville, beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12.

The Gloucester Devils will be taking on Le Royal de Bourassa in a game that is sure to involve lots of skill and amazing plays.

The Gloucester Devils are currently in seventh place in the league while Le Royal de Submitted Bourassa is sitting in ninth Alicia Morrow is a goalie with the West Ottawa Ringette place. Admission will be $5 per person to see this speedy, top Association’s Junior A team.

The tournament will wrap up with the fourth annual Coaches Game on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at the Richmond arena in Richmond.

This year there will be a "ring toss" at half time at this Coaches Game.

This is being done as a fundraiser for the Kayla Bradford GoFundMe campaign. The game itself should be lots of fun to watch as the coaches and assistant coaches try to demonstrate their ringette skills.

They will be lining up as Team McMinn versus Team Gorham.

Besides all of the tournament games, the NRL game and the Coaches Game, the tournament also will feature Bunnyfest, which will involve 4-to 7-yearold ringette players on the ice in Carp on the Sunday afternoon, Feb. 12.

These "Bunnies" will be playing short ringette games as well as enjoying special crafts and snacks.

Ottawa’s top athletes have their moment in the spotlight at annual sports awards

Stittsville’s Erica Wiebe, an Olympic gold medalist, and dual-sport athlete Vincent de Haître from Cumberland took home the female and male athlete of the year honours at the Ottawa Sports Awards, held at Algonquin College on Feb. 1.

Wiebe won the gold medal in wrestling at the Rio 2016 Summer Games, while de Haître won national titles in both cycling and speed skating in 2016, ranking on the world stage in longtrack skating.

“I’m glad that people like to follow speed skating and fol-

low my career,” de Haître said in an interview with the Ottawa Sports Awards. “I’m hoping that I can keep up the performances and show people that I’m truly dedicated to it. I’m glad that people see that.”

Wiebe’s mother, Paula Preston, also took home a major award, winning the Spirit of Sport Award.

Preston has volunteered with multiple sports clubs that her two daughters competed with, including the Kanata Rythmic Gymnastics Club, which her daughter Alisa attended. After Alisa retired, Preston stayed on as a volunteer and has been with the club for 23 years. She’s also volunteered with the Ottawa

Fury and the National Capital Wrestling Club.

Preston knew before the awards she wasn’t just attending for her daughter’s award, and she would take hardware of her own home.

But she didn’t know that Wiebe had flown in from out of town to surprise her mother and formally present her with the award.

“My mom wasn’t initially thrilled about me wrestling, but she has always instilled in me the values of fighting well, fighting hard and fighting fairly,” Wiebe said.

Farmwife goes in search of a Golden A

farm without a dog is not a farm at all, the Farmer declared one evening, as we enjoyed a movie with a dog as one of the central characters. It has been about a year since we had to put our 17-year-old dog down. Cody had a good, long life and he is missed. He was a bit untrainable in certain areas, but still a lovable dog. Over the last few years he became deaf, so he wasn’t much of a watchdog anymore — but he never really was. He was more apt to welcome strangers because many of them came bearing gifts — the gas man shared his sandwich with Cody when he came to fill our tank, and the UPS man always had dog cookies in his truck.

Cody was a runner, so when he wasn’t in the house he couldn’t wander free. He got me out of the house every day because he needed to run down the road, dragging me on the end of the leash. He was also an incredible food thief — even when he couldn’t possibly have been hungry.

Our next dog will be trained.

And we will also build a high fence around the house so he can roam freely. It sounds like the Farmer is ready to start looking.

My husband has decided that his semi-retirement dog is going to be a Golden Retriever.

He imagines taking this dog with him to scout properties or to finish up the log cabin he is building. The dog will accompany us on long walks around our farm and will sleep on Cody’s old blanket, in front of the TV and beside our bed.

I started the search for a Golden, and learned a few things.

First of all, it’s pretty tricky finding a Golden Retriever that needs a new home. We could put our name on a waiting list for a spring litter, but that means entering a whole new world of training — waking up in the middle of the night and listening to puppy wailing.

The Farmer says he is up for it. I laughed.

He doesn’t seem to remember when he brought Chelsea the Border Collie in as a pup. She chewed his shoes, his furniture and his books and created a few permanent

designs on the carpet. I’m not sure I’m up for training a pup. Besides, I have always had rescue dogs. There certainly are enough dogs looking for homes. We are bound to find a Golden in the lot somewhere.

I have registered with the organization Golden Rescue. I filled out their in-depth questionnaire and listed our vet and a few people as references. I also discovered that Goldens are prone to a unique set of health problems we have to be wary of.

Hopefully, they will be able to find us a nice dog that doesn’t mind the occasional barn cat or small child visiting, and likes rides in the car.

Sometimes Golden Rescue brings in dogs from other countries like Istanbul, where they are found wandering the streets.

Other times the dogs are needing to be rehomed because their owner has passed away, or needs to go into a residence that doesn’t allow pets.

The Farmer has always wanted a Golden Retriever, so that’s what we

are looking for. If you know of one that needs a home, let me know!

I will have to break the news to Sheila, Sammy and the barn cats.

They thought they had the place to themselves. They are in for a surprise. The beanie babies and small stuffed animals that Sheila carries around might also be in jeopardy.

Golden Retrievers love stuffed toys and they are very possessive about them. We might have to let him choose some out of the storage room, after our granddaughter has first pick.

I heard a dog barking the other night, but we don’t have any big dogs living near us. I was told it might be a coyote. I didn’t realize they did more than yip and howl.

Maybe if I walk my new Golden Retriever around the property, he can mark the perimeter and keep the wolves away from my newborn calves. Every animal has to earn his keep on the farm.

Back on slopes for another season

Tori Cotter (Ottawa), Rachel Ivay (Ottawa) and Carly Alexander (Carp) have returned this year with speed on their minds.

Olivia has been consistently earning Top 20 results. Kate has stepped up her speed in GS, landing just outside the Top 20. Tori made the Top 30 flip in panel slalom. Rachel earned 27th in GS.

Calabogie’s U14 rookies have adjusted well to the world of competitive ski racing, and are always eager to train and race. Gemma Smith (Gloucester), Eleanor Hall (Perth), Megan Cunliffe, Autumn Zlepnig, Lucas Miller (Kingston), Carson Cameron (Renfrew), and Dylan Buyers (Deep River) continue to improve with each race.

Carly Alexander of Carp is back on the slopes again this season.

A member of the U14 group (ages 12-13) of the Calabogie Ski Racing Club, Carly has been doing some fantastic skiing in the group’s three races to date, trying to improve her speed, but inevitably she has also experienced some fantastic crashes.

The U14’s next slalom race as well as a Super G Speed Camp will be held at Calabogie Peaks in late February.

Besides the U14 group, the Calabogie Ski Racing Club also has U10, U12, U16 and U18 group, all of whom have been racing.

Membership in the Calabogie Ski Racing Club stands at a record number this year with 75 races from U10 to U18.

The U14 group (ages 12-13) have already completed three races — a panel slalom, regular slalom, and giant slalom (GS) with a number of individual successes.

Bailey Stonham of Arnprior sits in 9th place in the overall female points standings after speeding to 14th place in a slalom at Vorlage Ski Hill and 8th place in the GS at Calabogie Peaks. Jeremy Van Grunsven of Odessa is hanging on to third place in the male points, with a first place run in GS and a third-place finish in slalom.

Wyatt Campbell-Brunke (Renfrew) sits just behind in fourth with his fourth place panel slalom result and some solid GS skiing. Carson Lefebvre (Calabogie) is close behind in fifth place overall, having notched an eighth place in slalom and a sixth in GS. Other notable results from Calabogie Racing Ski Club’s returning skiers include those of Jack Carnahan of Kanata, Aiden Maclean of Manotick, and Evan Sharma of Kingston, who have been stepping up their skills this season.

Jack finished 19th in the Calabogie GS, and Aiden pulled off 17th in the Vorlage slalom. Evan was 16th in this race. Noah Matthews (Burnstown) was skiing extremely well until a high-speed collision with some slalom Submitted gates temporarily sidelined him with a hand injury. He is Carly Alexander of Carp, a member of the Calabogie Ski Racing Club’s hoping to return to racing shortly.

'Atomic Love' tour features Tunnel of Love, wine, cheese

What about 80 feet deep?

That's if you take part in the "Atomic Love - Touring Wine and Cheese" event happening at the Diefenbunker in Carp on Tuesday, Feb. 14, which is Valentine's Day. In this event, you can explore the depths of the Diefenbunker on a guided tour with wine and cheese.

While touring, you will stop at different locations and learn about the history of the Diefenbunker while sampling cheese and wine.

Now, you have to admit nothing says "I love you" like exploring the Diefenbunker with wine and cheese and your beloved.

It happens on Tuesday, Feb. 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with tickets available from Eventbrite.

It's $195 for a couple, $100 for an individual and $80 for a designated driver. A charitable tax receipt is available upon request.

This underground date night will include six two-ounce wine pairings with six artisan cheese samples, led by Geoffrey Skeggs and a team of sommeliers; a photo booth with props in the

Tunnel of Love (a.k.a. Blast Tunnel); selfie stops along the tour; coffee, tea and a dessert bar at the conclusion of the tour; a little surprise for your main squeeze; and a $10 off coupon for the Diefenbunker boutique.

The Diefenbunker is 100,000 square feet in size, so while you can dress up for this special date, you should consider wearing comfortable footwear.

There will be one sommelier at each of the designated wine and cheese pairing stops along the tour.

Generating 84 KW, the solar installation will be owned by the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op (OREC), a community-level renewable power co-operative. OREC partners with local property owners to use their land or rooftops for community-owned renewable power projects, entering into 20-year lease agreements that protect the interests of both parties over the long-term.

Though new to Ontario, such community renewable power co-operatives have been quite successful in Europe.

OREC currently has 13 built solar projects ranging from 10 to 400 KW installed on rooftops of schools, nonprofit housing and private barns and warehouses around the city of Ottawa. These solar projects generate about 1 MW of power.

Eastern Ontario residents can join OREC with a $100 membership and then can invest in local renewable power generation through the purchase of securities, which provide the capital to final these local renewable power projects.

A member of OREC may purchase between $2,500 and $250,000 in securities which provide an annual return on investment in addition to a full repayment of capital over a 20-year period.

OREC currently has over 600 members.

Once installations are in place, the renewable energy produced generates revenue through Ontario's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program, which provides guaranteed payment for each kilowatt hour of electricity produced.

This solar power project at the Kin Vineyard, plus three others, is being financed by OREC's fifth securities offering, which is seeking to raise up to $2 million to invest in the four projects.

OREC's previous four securities offerings raised a total of $5.1 million which financed the existing 13 solar rooftop projects in Ottawa, four of which are found on French language schools including Ecole Maurice Lapointe in Kanata.

OREC is holding an investor information session this coming Monday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Ecole Maurice Lapointe School located at 17 Bridgestone Dr. in Kanata. Registration via Eventbrite is encouraged but not necessary.

Anyone interested in OREC and its work in renewable power generation is encouraged to attend this Feb. 13 meeting.

Leftovers pack well for lunch. Look for farro in the bulk section at your supermarket. If you like, substitute pearl barley for the farro.

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Standing time: 15 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients

- 1 cup (250 mL) semipearled farro - 2 cups (500 mL) diced carrots - ¼ cup (50 mL) apple cider vinegar - 1 tbsp (15 mL) honey - 1-1/2 tsp (7 mL) Dijon mustard - ¼ tsp (1 mL) each salt and pepper

Kanata is home to the city’s newest escape rooms with the opening of Unlocked Ottawa.

Unlocked is a joint venture between five friends who grew up in the in area and wanted to bring something unique to the community.

The two escape rooms offer something different from other venues in the city.

“We’re a little bit different. I think we approached this with the idea that we couldn’t just open another escape room,” said Candice Gertsman, who grew up in Kanata Lakes and now lives in Centretown.

“We were thinking, what would we have wanted when we were here? What would we have wanted when we were teenagers, young adults?

What do we want now?”

Unlocked features two escape rooms with plans to open a third in the spring. The first room, the Krylon Crew versus the Police Duo, is “a modern take on cops and robbers,” said Gertsman.

Teams of two to three people compete against each other — the police to arrest the robbers and the robbers to escape the police — in the same space with identical puzzles while racing against the 35-minute time limit.

“The idea of a competition came up and we were excited by that because no one’s done that that we know of,” said Melissa Sydney, who lived in Alta Vista and now resides in Barrhaven.

“It adds a sense of urgency when you see that they’re pulling down something or opening a box you haven’t gotten into yet,” added Calvin Joy, a former Katimavik resident who now lives in Barrhaven.

The sense of urgency is real. With only a chain-link fence separating the two teams, you can hear and see everything your opponent is doing — all the while knowing the clock is ticking down. Gertsman said it’s fun watching the teams compete — some are loud, calling out their answers while others try to hide everything they do from the opposing side. No matter who wins, it’s all in good fun.

“We’ve designed it in such a way that some-

body is going to win,” said Joy. “If you make it to 35 minutes and no one gets out it’s not as much fun.”

The other escape room, Our Man on Sussex, is a collaborative effort for larger groups with a success rate of about 25 per cent.

“Our Man on Sussex is one of the largest capacity rooms in the city,” said Gertsman. “We’re always trying to think outside of the box.”

The idea was also to create rooms that anyone can play, whether for a fun family activity, a night out for friends, or a corporate team-building exercise.

“All our themes are non-threatening so that it’s more appealing,” said Sydney. “There’s no darkness so that is one thing that really sets us apart.

“No one’s had a bad time, which to us kind of blows us away because we don’t have a lot of experience designing rooms. It’s very confidence inspiring.”

The team — made up of Joy, 27, his sister Rebecca, 24, 27-year-olds Gertsman and Sydney, and 29-year-old Jessica Lim — came together early last year after Sydney and Rebecca entered an escape room design competition.

“We didn’t win,” said Sydney with a laugh.

“We just did the competition for fun and then once we started really talking about it we decided that we really liked it and we wanted to look more into it.”

The room they designed for the competition didn’t make the final cut for Unlocked Ottawa, but it got them thinking about what they could offer. Sydney created a business proposal and received a grant from Invest Ottawa and now the doors are open.

“They all thought this would do well so that really gave us a lot of confidence to go for it,” she said.

Unlocked had a soft opening shortly before Christmas and since then has received positive feedback from people who have tested it out.

Some have said they found the puzzles too difficult, so the team is looking at creating two versions of Our Man on Sussex — an easier room for first-time escapees and those just looking to have fun, and a harder more competitive

room for those who want the additional challenge, said Sydney.

“The response we’ve been getting is just so rewarding,” said Gertsman.

“You want people at the end of the day, no matter what, to have fun.”

Aside from the two escape rooms, Unlocked also offers a board game lounge where people can play old favourites or learn a new game.

“We want people to also hang out here,” said Gertsman. “I think people should come here because we’re trying to do something different. We’re trying to fill a gap in the area and going forward, even if you’re living downtown, I want people to see us and be like, ‘I think it’s worth the drive.’ I think we’re doing things that no one else is doing in the city.”

Apparently the Premier is now considering ‘doing something’ about the hydro delivery charge.

When I heard what her plan was, I couldn’t believe it. She’s considering paying for delivery charges out of ‘general revenue’.

But if this happens, you’ll still be paying for all those secret fees hidden in your hydro bill.

You’ll either be taxed more for it, or the government will just borrow more money and increase Ontario’s already gigantic debt.

There’s only so many times a failing government can hit the reset button and expect to be taken seriously. But all Wynne is doing is continuing the hydro shell game. Don’t be fooled.

he old Singer Sewing machine was considered a piece of furniture in the parlour, but in the wintertime, with the parlour closed off, the door shut, and a braided rug rolled at the bottom to keep out the cold draft, the Singer was rolled into the kitchen.

Hardly a day passed that Mother wasn’t on the old machine. There was always a patch needed here and a hem there, and on the nights Mother wasn’t working on her diaries, she often was at the Singer sewing machine. My sister Audrey thought it was time she could make something for herself, and finally, one winter night, after she had badgered Mother enough, she was told she could use the sewing machine. Well!! That was like telling Everett he was old enough to drive the Model T! When an unexpected situation arises, there’s no time to sort through paperwork, no matter how essential it may be. Having everything you need in an organized emergency binder can streamline the process and give you peace of mind.

What to Include in an Emergency Binder.

• Vital records like birth certificates, driver’s licenses, Social Security cards, passports and child custody papers • Insurance policies, including homeowners, renters, auto, life and health.

• Property records such as real estate deeds, rental agreements, and vehicle titles and registration.

• Financial documents like wills, trusts, powers-of-attorney and funeral instructions.

• A family emergency plan with contact information and predetermined meeting places.

Safely Storing Other Important Information Some items, such as account passwords and a backup of critical computer files, aren’t suited for a portable binder. Instead, house them in a secure location like a safety deposit box or lockbox.

Communication networks, such as mobile phones and computers, could be unreliable during disasters, and electricity could be disrupted. Planning in advance will help ensure that all the members of your household—including children and people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs, as well as outside caregivers—know how to reach each other and where to meet up in an emergency. Planning starts with three easy steps:

Make sure everyone carries a copy in his or her backpack, purse, or wallet.

If you complete your Family Emergency Communication Plan online at ready.gov/make-a-plan, you can print it onto a wallet-sized card. You should also post a copy in a central location in your home, such as your refrigerator or family bulletin board.

Acts of hate will not divide our country. I believe that Canada is stronger and more vibrant because of our differences.

It was great to take part in a panel discussion at Carleton University Political Communications class.

I am always inspired by the quality of the engagement from our youth. They asked the tough questions and are very engaged on all of the issues that are shaping not just our country but the world. Thank you to Alayne Crawford and Jenn Jeffreys for joining me on the panel.

Jamaal Rogers takes his poetry to students

He's a hip hop artist. He's a spoken word poet. He's a songwriter. He's a musician.

Yes, Jamaal Rogers is a multidimensional performer who demonstrated his poetry, his storytelling and his hip hop at a presentation appearance at Stonecrest Elementary School at Woodlawn on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

He presented to the assembled grade 4-6 students and then to the grade 7-8 students as a kickoff to recognizing Black History Month at the school.

Jamaal reminded the students that Black History Month in February is important because Canada has a rich history of black citizens doing important things for the country.

A self-identified Afro CaribbeanCanadian, he admitted that he did not know the story about his own black ancestors until 2014 when he discovered that his great grandfather was Canada's first black postman, a position which he achieved by standing up for himself and protesting his initial rejection for the position.

He told the students how his great grandfather Albert Jackson had come to Canada with his mother and seven siblings via the Underground Railroad, which helped black slaves in the United States escape to the freedom of Canada.

When Albert Jackson encountered racism and rejection despite his qualifications when he tried to be a postman in Toronto in 1882, his case came to the attention of the then-prime minister John A. Macdonald. Subsequently, Albert became Canada's first black postman, a position he then held until his death in 1918.

Jamaal said that finding out about his own history was important as it

made him proud of his background.

But Jamaal was at Stonecrest Elementary School for more than just telling the story of his own black ancestry. He was also there to recite some of his poetry which included poems about the puppeteer behind Elmo - a Muppet character on Sesame Street, a poem about grocery shopping, a poem about his mother, one about his father, another about chemical giant Monsanto, a poem about meeting your best friend and a special one about teaching his daughter how to ride a bike.

He told the students that he writes his poetry

about things that he experiences in everyday life.

He said that he likes using words to express himself and to share stories about how he lives his life so others can relate to him.

Jamaal told how he had written his first poem as a nine-year-old in grade four, all about a girl that he really liked. But he did not write poetry again until university. Now, though, he has become quite prolific, with about 125 publicized poems as well as over 400 poems that he has written but does not share with others as they are very emotional for him at present.

In addition, he has over 2,000 notes on his cellphone with ideas for poems. So he has no scarcity of inspiration for his poetry.

Jamaal also performed some hip hop at the school which he says is a musical form that rose from spoken word poetry, the art of performing poetry in a way that engages an audience.

Hip hop includes rap, which is one of its various performance forms. Jamaal performed a rap song about feeling blessed.

Jamaal moved to Kinburn last fall where he lives with his wife and five children, four of whom now attend Stonecrest Elementary School.

He is known as a performance poet and hip hop artist who uses the stage name “Just Jamaal.�

He also conducts his own after-school program, is a residential counsellor for adults with disabilities, helps organize the Urban Legends Poetry Slam and is the creator of Make Spoken Word Go Viral, an organization dedicated to supporting the spoken word art form by highlighting poets across Canada.

Jamaal received the 2016 Ontario Arts Foundation’s Artist Educator Award which is given annually to an Ontario resident who exemplifies excellence in arts education, demonstrates a unique approach to his or her arts education practice, creates meaningful learning experiences for young people, inspires connection to the arts beyond the classroom and maintains an active arts practice.

Jamaal tries to use his song, rhyme and prose to create beautiful imagery.

Black History Month is observed annually in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom to honour and remember important people and events in the history of those with African heritage.

It is celebrated in February in both Canada and the United States while it is marked in October in the United Kingdom.

It was in 1995 that the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada.

Registration for the sled run is $10 per sled, which is a 100 per cent

The old sleds leave at 10 a.m. and awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m., with complimentary chili back at the legion for participants.

The Old Sled Run route is about 40 km in total, from the legion over the Ottawa River to Gavan’s Hotel in Quyon and back.

Two snowmobilers ended up with a watery ending to their outing early on Saturday, Feb. 4. It could have been much worse.

The two snowmobilers went through the ice near Vances Side Road in the Baskin’s Beach area near Dunrobin in West Carleton.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service responded after receiving an emergency call just after 1 a.m.

Upon arrival at the scene, paramedics found two men who had been snowmobiling on the ice when their snowmobile went through the ice.

Only one of the two men had actually gone into the water.

A man, 38, was treated by paramedics for mild hypothermia before being transferred to hospital where he was assessed as being in stable condition.

by Red-breasted nuthatches). Incidentally, both species of nuthatches store nuts and seeds under bark for later consumption, a feat usually performed while upside down.

This winter, the coniferous trees bore very few cones and therefore seeds, so not many Red-breasted nuthatches remained in our area. The few that did are mostly being seen at birdfeeders. This supports the notion that feeding birds doesn't really affect their migration patterns. If their natural food (i.e., conifer seeds) is plentiful, Red-breasted nuthatches remain here in surprisingly large numbers.

If there is a paucity of seeds, most migrate to richer feeding grounds. If birdfeeders persuaded birds to not migrate, large numbers should be seen here every winter. But that is simply not the case. A lack of natural food is

also why there are virtually no Purple finches visiting birdfeeders this winter.

Both species of nuthatches nest in tree cavities. While White-breasteds adopt premade cavities such as abandoned woodpecker nests, Red-breasted nuthatches excavate their own. Both species have an unusual way of deterring predators and parasites from entering their homes. White-breasted nuthatches wipe live Blister beetles around the perimeter of the nest hole. The agitated beetles release defensive chemicals from their leg joints, which forms a chemical barrier around the entrance. Red-breasted nuthatches coat the perimeter of their nest cavities with conifer gum.

It seems that despite spending much of their time hanging upside down, nuthatches certainly have their heads screwed on right!

It is fascinating how nature exploits every opportunity.

Plants living in harsh environments like bogs can attain nutrients by devouring insects. After moose shed their antlers, the grubs of antler flies devour the bone. Dead fish washed up on shores of lakes fuel the appetites of gulls while carcasses on highway edges are meals for turkey vultures. In nature, no opportunity goes unnoticed.

In local woods a number of birds eat insects buried under bark. Woodpeckers access them by breaking through the tree's armour, with different species using different techniques. Hairy and Downy woodpeckers hammer at the bark to chip it off; Blackbacked Woodpeckers flake it off by striking at the bark sideways with their strong bills after first hitting it head-on several times.

Pileated woodpeckers, the giants of their group, excavate massive holes to access carpenter ant colonies.

Joining woodpeckers in their search for meals in wood are nuthatches. Locally there are two species: the White-breasted nuthatch, which prefers mature deciduous forests, and the Red-breasted nuthatch, which is found in coniferous or mixed woods.

Although they frequent different habitats, both species share one unusual behavioural trait: they characteristically forage while upside down.

Why do nuthatches look for insects and spiders in that odd position? It seems that other birds such as woodpeckers and Blackcapped chickadees have the more traditional ways of finding dormant invertebrates well covered, so by looking down into bark crevices, nuthatches find items overlooked by the other birds.

Presentation on amphibians in Almonte Cheryl Morris-Putman

On Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m., the Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists (MVFN) will host the fifth presentation in their natural history series "Wild Creature Close-Ups." This event will take place in the Social Hall of Almonte United Church, 106 Elgin St., in Almonte.

The guest speaker for the evening is an experienced naturalist, painter, and author, Peter Mills, with his presentation entitled "Metamorphosis: Changing the Way We Look at Amphibians."

Mills has worked professionally as a naturalist in Algonquin Park over the past nine years and is currently studying at-risk salamanders by using mapping technology to plot where different species are found and how they interact with one another.

Using photos and videos, Peter will be speaking about a twoyear journey that he undertook to write and illustrate a unique field guide dedicated to enhancing knowledge of the critical developmental first half of the lives of frogs, toads, and salamanders. Up to that point, the available resources only outlined

in detail the adult lives of amphibians.

His book, published in 2016 and entitled Metamorphosis: Ontario's Amphibians at All Stages of Development is an in-depth illustration of how these specific amphibians de-

velop into the adult land-living forms that are so familiar.

Most people know little about, let alone have observed, the aquatic larval stages that precede essentially all adult amphibian forms. In the creation of his book, Peter main-

tained his focus on the amphibians found within Ontario's borders to describe and illustrate in detail the great variability among the immature forms (larvae) of these same species over the broad ranges that they occupy.

In his presentation, Peter Mills will briefly talk about amphibian biology but his focus will be on the process of creating this book. The project began in 2014 and included hours

dedicated to "swamp sleuthing," the careful raising of delicate larvae, his detailed and artistic illustrations, the combing of literature and learning the details of formatting and selfpublishing.

Everyone is welcome to attend what promises to be an interesting and informative evening. There is a non-member fee of $5, but no charge for youth aged 18 years and under.

p.m. for those wishing to socialize until the start of the presentation at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments are available then and during the evening. A discussion will follow the talk.
